  1. QUOTE (LDF @ Jul 24, 2015 -> 10:42 PM) here is a question, what happen if he really performs for them...... i let yous guys fill out the rest. He won't. I guess he could get that sweet stroke of parts of last season back for a bit. He was really good at smashing the ball where it was pitched. But alas the season ended and took away his momentum and he pretty much stunk this entire season. His defense of course has always been mediocre to poor. Angels could get him on a hot streak if he gets that stroke back, but he's not capable of it for an extended period. I'd give his fielding a D and hitting a C.
  2. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jul 25, 2015 -> 02:55 AM) Back to 6 games under! Nice, but don't be fooled into thinking we have a .500 team please. This team goes from playing OK to laughably bad in a second. And it drops games in bunches as we know. I really think it's gonna take a new coaching staff to change that.
  3. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 25, 2015 -> 12:50 AM) Be honest and think here. In a movie theater, under fire, it's dark, only light is from the screen. You really think that under fire, probably from behind, you could turn around, aim, and get a clean shot off without accidentally hitting the wrong person? While the person has a semi-automatic handgun and can keep pulling the trigger? Per the police, as the crowd was leaving the theater this guy snuck into it and almost got out of the theater before someone stopped the crowd/stopped him. The people fleeing the room didn't identify the shooter as he left the theater with the group. They couldn't tell. Now you're telling me you could honestly figure out who the shooter was with enough accuracy to pull the trigger? The closest example of a mass shooting interacting with a person carrying a weapon I can think of is the Gabrielle Giffords shooting and the person across the street who had the gun nearly shot the wrong person. And that was in the daylight. Well, I have confidence in Tex, that he'd get the guy. Just kidding (sorry, on a sensitive subject). But you make some good points, I'll give you that. I just want to see some progress on this problem. I mean, f***, you are risking your life going to a movie nowadays. Thank goodness he picked a night there were only 25 people in the damn theatre, not 225.
  4. Q is pretty darn good. The Sox's only hope for the future is building on this excellent starting staff. I would only trade Shark and closer Robertson off the staff. The only hope is to try again and acquire new everyday lineup guys. Trade Melky now that he's hot. Trade LaLob. Trade Lexi. Trade Eaton, but I would keep most of the starting pitching. It's really the team's only hope to ever contend again, to dominate on the mound and keep trying to find everyday players worth a s***.
  5. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 24, 2015 -> 09:57 PM) Greg, basically you're describing a mixture of Donald Trump with the aggressive nature of Michael Douglas' character in the "white men fight back" movie Falling Down. While we've probably all sympathized with the breakfast at the fast food restaurant (why doesn't the food ever look like the pictures on the menu? I want my breakfast even though it's 10:31!) scene, perhaps threatening everyone with a handgun to get whatever you want won't work if everyone starts to do that. What if two Trumps meet each other? How will they avoid a "saving face" confrontation...and de-escalate it? From his appearance on the Scarborough show, it seems he wants to just provoke arguments over anything at this point. Imagine the leaders of Iran or North Korea did anything remotely offensive...like airing a propaganda/satire movie (The Interview crossed with You've Been Trumped). Is there any conceivable way to imagine they wouldn't be nuked out of existence? If someone shouted "you lie!" during a speech to Congress (or threw shoes at him) he'd just pull out a revolver and blast away. Is that what we really want to be teaching our children? For every would-be hero who saves someone, there are going to be ten who get themselves and a number of innocent bystanders killed. Do we want "good samaritan" laws that protect civilians who accidentally kill others in public with handguns? But you are assuming these people who LEGALLY have guns on them will do what you suggest ... lose their tempers and start firing. If so, then these law abiding citizens must spend the rest of their lives imprisoned which is not what they want. You make good points. But I dunno. I want to fight back against the nutjobs when they do these things. It's so cowardly to whip out weapons in dark movie theatres and start firing. Pisses me off. Would be nice to see him stopped before the damage continues. Tex would have shot him after the first blast of the gunman's gun.
  6. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 24, 2015 -> 02:18 PM) i know if I was a millionaire, thailand would be the first place i would want to move to after a theater shooting. Because thailand is safe I might have gotten the country wrong. I'll ask him again. He did research and the country he wants to move to has absolutely no murders. QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Jul 24, 2015 -> 02:30 PM) This has been pointed out before. Greg doesn't read these posts. Crime is down you say? OK there are some figures. I accept them. But please people don't bury your heads in teh sand and say the media is over sensationalizing this stuff and it is not a real problem. Random killings are a problem! And a growing problem! You can't deny that! The media reports on this crap when it happens. Some nut whips out a gun in a dark theatre and starts killing people, yes, unfortunately people want to know a lot about the incident. There are ultimately some heroes and a lot of stories. These stories must be covered and not buried under the rug. I do wish we could stop even referring to the person's name in these stories. Just call him "the gunman" and go ahead and write about what kind of person he was, whom he was affiliated with etc, but try to not mention the killer's name if possible.
  7. QUOTE (Tex @ Jul 24, 2015 -> 01:48 PM) I was just thinking most of the people I know who carry, men and women, don't do it out of fear, but out of anger. They don't want to be cowering under a theater seat praying someone comes and solves their problem. They want to stop the SOB who is terrorizing their community and terrorizing the good people. They want to stand up to the evil instead of hiding in the dark waiting for help to arrive and hoping it is in time. I'm certain there are some who are afraid of criminals and carry out of fear, just as there are people who are afraid of guns and the people who carry them. Perhaps we need better education to bridge some gaps there. Tex you are a great person and should run for office!
  8. OK, watched the Skeleton Twins and Birdman on my computer this week since I have some free time. Is it common knowledge that Hader and Wiig can act? I'd give that movie a B-minus. Probably worth watching. Birdman ... how did Keaton not win the Academy Award? Can you do any better than he did as an actor? Did he win any of the minor awards for that performance at least? And to those who watched Birdman ... how do you explain the ending? What did it mean? Spoiler alert coming for old movie... Stop reading here if u still are to watch Birdman. OK, Birdman obviously had some powers. Remember Keaton willed that light fixture to fall off the ceiling and hit the actor on the head early in the movie and Keaton character broke some things just by looking at them. So he did have some powers and it was believable he might be able to fly. The scene with the taxi driver not getting paid, however, was an obvious ploy of the filmmaker to tell the audience Birdman cannot fly. So what was his daughter looking at as she gazed out the window? Did he really fly away or fall to his death? I would suspect he fell to his death and she was looking up happy he had escaped his demons and was now up in the clouds forever. But from the tone of the movie that isn't the correct response she would have. She was pretty emotional and wouldn't be happy her dad jumped to his death. Also, remember the last time he flew it apparently was an out of body dream like experience because the presence of the taxi driver proved he didn't fly. So there definitely could be another flying dream sequence at the conclusion of the film. I don't buy that he really killed himself on stage. I would think the movie would have ended right there had he done that or shortly after showing he got good reviews after all. The planned ending with Johnny Depp would have been really weird as well. What is the correct meaning of the ending of Birdman?? The fact it's not clear I think hurts the movie. I would say the scene with the taxi driver is telling that he cannot fly. Had that scene not been in the movie then I might be able to buy the current ending. Because of that scene I think they should have spelled out more what happened to Birdman. I would give Birdman a B as at times the darkness of the movie got annoying. I wouldn't argue with B-plus.
  9. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 24, 2015 -> 09:46 PM) The cell looks nothing like Kaufman, with or without fountains Inside the Cell it is the same bowl. The original upper deck was just like Kauffman (way too steep). Jerry wanted a functional park like Kauffman and he got it. For the team, it's perfect: clubhouses, locker rooms, managers offices, staff offices. For fans it's a blah place that is very acceptable in terms of comfort.
  10. Surprised the Angels are wasting their time on another Sox castoff. There was a time last year he had that sweet stroke going. But offseason came around and Gillaspie turned back into a pumpkin. Maybe with better instruction he'll be a good singles hitter to all fields.
  11. QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Jul 24, 2015 -> 05:09 PM) Just contributing to this discussion, FYI, in the book "Ballpark: The Building of Camden Yards," a rep from the HOK architectural firm was quoted as saying that JR was given the option to build Camden Yards in essence instead of what took place with the new Comiskey Park and turned it down. He was shown the plans but said no. And the rep specifically named him not another member of the organization when talking about that decision. The HOK firm designed the plans for both stadiums. Mark Reinsdorf was in love with Royals (Kauffman) Stadium for some reason and wanted the same stadium. That's what he got minus fountains. A pretty bland Cell. The Sox were mostly concerned with improving the clubhouses and offices and that's what they got. Except for die hard Sox fans most agree the Cell is a lousy looking ballpark. Great food and drink and all that but lousy ballpark.
  12. This one in Louisiana. There are dead and injured. http://news.yahoo.com/official-2-dead-movi...-015727028.html Our country is officially insane. I know a millionaire who is thinking about denouncing his US citizenship in 10 years when he retires and wants to move to I believe it's Thailand. Here in the USA our political system is worst it's ever been with our political officials failing to work for the people, only special interests. Our crime is off the charts BAD. These type of incidents are ON THE RISE with no signs of slowing. Our economy is horrible and there likely will be an amazing crash one of these days. America is in deep trouble. I'm not trying to start something here, but it remains just a matter of time before one of these nutjobs brings a machine gun into a sporting event. Don't know if they'll shoot the participants or the spectators but it's all set up for the nutjob. Wait until the second half of a basketball game or football game, storm the entrances and start shooting. Once that happens, sports will be changed forever. THIS LATEST INCIDENT angers me beyond belief!!! Quit killing each other, Americans! caulfield- does the world think the USA is beyond hope?
  13. QUOTE (Tex @ Jul 24, 2015 -> 02:57 AM) I was just coming to mention the kidnapping angle. There is a 40 year old child disappearance that is just now being prosecuted and they point to that even as the start of the watch your kids all the time generation. Wow. I always knew it was the fear of kidnappers. Nice post.
  14. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 23, 2015 -> 03:55 PM) So Greg, what you described, is not a way I could personally parent / raise my kids. I didn't have kids so I could ignore them and not be their and help raise them. I'm not going to be their to hand everything to them, but I do want to be their for their sports moments, etc. And when I had kids, I understood it came with responsibilities and that meant that often times my priorities would take a back seat (and I don't view it as a bad thing...you just have fun doing different things). Before my kids, I wouldn't have wanted to go to the park, but now taking my daughter to the park and pushing her on the swings is something her and I enjoy. True and great post. And you sound like a VERY GOOD parent! However you are a great case study for this issue because as a kid you were allowed to roam free like I was. Isn't there a part of you that feels sorry for your kids cause they won't be able to do that? And my other question is: No way in hell you would EVER let your kids roam around during the day as you were allowed to do, right? My guess is no way in hell you'd allow that. My take has always been the parents of today long ago were convinced if their kids could have that type of carefree, roam around, play with the neighbors kids at the park a mile from home unsupervised, they'd be so worried about kidnappers they just wouldn't be able to function. Folks, kidnappers ruined our society and guess what ... there aren't that many kidnappers out there.
  15. Shark is on fire. Melky finally elevates a couple over the fence. Sox finally look better than a Central Division team. Yay.
  16. It's pretty obvious Shark will be going to Toronto. That's the Sox's fave trading partner.
  17. So the Detroit Tigers owe Verlander about 28 million a year for 2016, 17, 18 and 19. Bear with me a second. Let's say the Tigers let somebody else sign Verlander instead of giving him that ridiculous contract. Would it have killed the Tigers? Buried the Tigers? No. The SMART PLAY if you are a GM of any team is simply refuse to give big contracts to pitchers. Just say no. Ha ha to Detroit. Final comment on this: Let's say Verlander becomes so rotten he gets hammered almost every start the rest of his contract. Do they make him a long reliever at 28 mill a year? It's all Monopoly money in sports, but unfortunately the money the customer spends is not Monopoly money. Gimme a 10 dollar beer please and an 8 dollar hot dog, I'm hungry.
  18. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Jul 24, 2015 -> 01:10 AM) Hooray for the pitcher named Shark His team mates hit it out of the park But if your name is Quintana his team mates say manana Great poem! I like it. QUOTE (Soxfest @ Jul 24, 2015 -> 01:19 AM) You let Shark finish? They couldn't. Have to give his new team a break. Aces need to be rested and coddled.
  19. Somebody's going to get a good pitcher in Shark. He's having a good year. What do u know? Lift and pull and we hit four home runs. Only way the Sox can win. Good pitching and some home runs. We're back in the race, baby! !! Actually not, but this is how the team was supposed to win this year.
  20. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 22, 2015 -> 11:54 PM) Sun Times has an article up pointing out that Abreu only has hit "4 line drives this month". of course, I'm not even bothering to link to it because it's in the Sun Times and their insane number of popups literally makes the page 100% unviewable. That website is crazy lousy. But I read they sold all their suburban papers to the Trib, so the Sun Times is about to be out of business obviously.
  21. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jul 23, 2015 -> 07:59 PM) Eaton 8 Saladino 5 Cabrera 7 Abreu DH LaRoche 3 Garcia 9 Ramirez 6 Soto 2 Sanchez 4 Who thinks Shark should make this start? Why not? We're still in a hot pennant race for the WC. Hawk says so until the day the Sox are eliminated. That was his line in the St. Looie series. And there's no quit in that front office seeing if the team can get hot.
  22. QUOTE (WhiteSoxLifer @ Jul 23, 2015 -> 06:53 PM) The #Astros also had Jeff Samardzija on their radar, but couldn't afford to wait for #WhiteSox to decide on a course of action. https://twitter.com/jcrasnick/status/624275652238266368 Stupid front office thinking they could win when we knew it was over An organization that thought it had the bodies to win didn't even have the balls to fire Robin. That was the ONLY chance at seeing if this team had a WC run in it, which it didn't. So why no trades by now???
  23. QUOTE (raBBit @ Jul 23, 2015 -> 06:47 PM) The FO only mistake has been holding out to see if the team could compete. Yeah and that's a fireable offense. Everybody with a brain knew this team was trash at the all star break and weeks before the break. If this team wanted to see if it could compete it HAD to fire Robin so long ago ... that was the only 'chance' to see if it'd wake up these baseball failures.
  24. QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 23, 2015 -> 05:21 PM) They wait too long. The "sellers" market became "not that much of a sellers market" pretty quickly. We will late until last day and get some reliever in AA and be like "well you don't know what the market was like!" They wait way too long. There's no law that says they can't trade a guy before the all star break or get details worked out during the break when the team is as bad as this one. Bad, bad front office. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jul 23, 2015 -> 05:22 PM) If that's the case, you take the comp pick in the off season. That simple. Shark isn't the only guy that needs to be dealt asap.
  25. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Jul 23, 2015 -> 03:33 AM) Kind of weird he pinch hit for Flowers. Not that it makes much of a difference but there's always a chance Tyler runs into one to tie the game up since he's big lumox but Shuck won't hit a HR . Only power on the bench is Beckham and Soto and neither was used . Rosenthal is RH but if Ventura thinks the Sox get 3 straight hits to tie it he's crazy. Have to think HR in that situation even if Rosenthal gives up very few. To be fair, Flowers really looks lost at the plate right now. Robin probably just didn't want to watch him bat again. WHen Flowers is going bad it's pretty sickening.
