  1. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Aug 13, 2013 -> 09:12 PM) As long as he's putting up an .800+ OPS against RHP, he's going to have at least a part time job. Once this contract runs out, does he make the MLB minimum? Does he love baseball enough to play for 1-2 million a year? Judging from how he not so long ago was by far the worst hitter in baseball, I'd say nobody will pay him more than the basic salary. If the Sox can't trade him and his contract expires on the south side maybe the White Sox will be that team to give him 1-3 mill a year or a Keppinger-like deal.
  2. QUOTE (ptatc @ Aug 15, 2013 -> 08:45 PM) I think it has more to do with philosophy. He's finally figured out he is not a power hitter and is just hitting. Could be. The bent knees are obvious, however. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 15, 2013 -> 09:41 PM) People? No. Greg? Yes. Thing is, we're not going to win anything until the players improve their on base percentage. Big Hurt somehow hit for power and also walked a lot.
  3. QUOTE (ron883 @ Aug 15, 2013 -> 07:09 AM) I find it strange that you can compare Dunn with the Sox to a trainwreck, but you would never compare Ozzie with the sox to a trainwreck. I don't know how anybody could say a negative word about Ozzie right now after watching Robin manage this team. Worst fundamental baseball team I can ever remember and he shares in that.
  4. QUOTE (Joshua Strong @ Aug 12, 2013 -> 07:32 AM) I think White Sox brass views Garcia as the 1B/DH of the future. From what I've read and what I've seen (I will not over-react; I like him) Garcia again looks like a White Sox free-swinger with a bunch of talent (see Viciedo, see DeAza) who could use some coaching. I like the fact Manto got Beckham to bend his knees. Beckham should now be a .300 hitter the rest of his career, though his power may have been zapped, which is OK. He was on fast track to the minors if he kept his old stance. But folks, our youngsters (Phegs isn't going to make it without some refining as well) need help. Is Manto the man the young players will respect enough to give that help? I'd fire him and bring in a FAMOUS hitting coach. Big Frank probably won't do it. He's too rich to want to travel that much during the season. Is SOMEBODY out there??? Garcia's future may depend on it. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 12, 2013 -> 07:56 AM) It would make so much sense for the White Sox to go after him. The good news is the Dodgers aren't likely to bid for him due to having Gonzalez at 1B, same with the Cubs and Rizzo. Thing is, if the White Sox scouts decide he's a can't miss prospect, the Sox HAVE to acquire him if they want to be relevant in the Central Division quickly.
  5. QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Aug 15, 2013 -> 02:34 AM) I've suspected this all year. His physical tools are still there. His head hasn't been in the game. Unless his family situation is 100 percent solid, he'll never be able to shake this. Quite a problem for Dunn n the White Sox. Baseball should have a Mr. Courageous Award like some sports, such as college sports and reward those who play through pain or adversity.
  6. Well, I should change my opinion of Dunn, then. I have despised him as a player but this shows why he's been so bad. Now we know the reason Dunn has been a trainwreck in a Sox jersey. Best wishes to the Dunn family. Family first, always!
  7. He's the latest Sox acquisition to be blah. Please somebody, pick him up. New bodies in bullpen needed next season.
  8. Has A. Garcia drawn any walks with the Sox yet? Not gonna help his on base percentage in the future. Like Kenny said, we got to improve OBP. I think we need to work with these guys all winter on approach. Would I prefer a new hitting coach? Yes. Or at least add the man who knew how to draw a walk and still HIT, FRANK THOMAS.
  9. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 14, 2013 -> 09:41 PM) Yes, but to maximize your value for a prospect you have to try and get closest to the #1 pick as possible. There is quite a large fall off after the top half of the first round when you talk about over value of a prospect. If you make those moves that you mention (which has no bearing on our record this year) and also grab the best pick as possible you are maximizing your investment in players and prospects. You dont seem to understand that having a first round pick is not the same as having a top pick. IN fact they are quite a bit different. I understand that. But a devil's advocate would say, hey, TROUT was available way down the line. Didn't have to take him No. 1, 2 or 3. He was there, folks. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 14, 2013 -> 09:44 PM) I recommend this article when anyone wants to discuss the value of prospects acquired through the draft. If you are a fan of your team you want them to maximize this if possible, especially when rebuilding http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=4368 I'll read it tonight. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Aug 14, 2013 -> 09:46 PM) If that would actually work, then we would all want that to happen. As it is, if everything broke our way, that would give us a .500 team that we would have to watch get gradually worse for 4 years until the contracts all expire and we can try to make serious moves again. Or, we can do it the right way now, and get a chance to compete some time this decade. Why would that give us a .500 team only? With the Sox pitching? I thought pretty much all we had to do was fix the everyday lineup and the Sox are golden cause of the current pitching. My simple suggestion there could work wonders and the draft is just a bonanza. And we could substitute some other catcher for AJP on the free agent market if u want to go younger there.
  10. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Aug 14, 2013 -> 10:23 PM) Yes, there are certain parts of all of it that are absolutely confusing, I do remember. Frankly, that's why I enjoy the game. I do hope you keep reminding me so I am not to be confused by it in the future. I agree he has value as a platoon partner. He does not hit righties any more. He can still murder lefties. No one is going to claim him though, especially when I'm pretty sure anybody that claims him owes him $1 mill per year from 2014 through 2020. Yes, that 1 million a year deal for six years should prevent the waiver claim. I agree.
  11. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Aug 14, 2013 -> 10:25 PM) Rumors swirled in 2011 that one of Dunn's children was dealing with some extremely severe health issues, yet you persistently rail on him all the same. Perhaps you should look in a mirror. Were the rumors ever turned into facts? This Alexei story mentioned the specific problem.
  12. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 14, 2013 -> 10:35 PM) Thats where there is a disconnect. If you want your team to win titles, you want to maximize your chances at improving your roster, at this point it would be acquiring a better pick. True, but I also would prefer we sign Jose Abreu and Grandy and AJ and voila, we gots a very good team again (on paper). And that's not even talking about the MLB Draft.
  13. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Aug 14, 2013 -> 10:32 PM) Then spend less time reading Soxtalk. It's half joke, half us trying to find solace in a silver lining. If it's not how you cope with this s***hole season, then stop reading it. No problem. I can handle it. My point is a lot of people repeat themselves over and over, not just me. I may stress my disdain for Dunn and Rios and love for Paulie; others repeat themselves on other topics as well.
  14. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Aug 14, 2013 -> 10:30 PM) As a fan, I care about f***ing championships. I like when the Sox when games solely because it gets them closer to the playoffs. You can enjoy rooting for your .500 seasons, I'm going to root for chance to get back to the World Series. You are misquoting me. My high end goal isn't .500. It's to win way more than that. My response was I'd RATHER GO .500 than get the No. 1 pick. Because ... I get a ton more wins from my favorite team during my favorite time of year, baseball season. I'll take the draft as it comes. Do I want my team to take Trout instead of Mitchell?? Of course. Do I want Sale over Hochevar (what a draft pick bust)? Of course. My ultimate goal isn't .500. But will I take it over a No. 1 pick? Of course I would.
  15. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 14, 2013 -> 10:29 PM) Alright lets get a better pick! great game, great strategy! I was told posts like these are jokes, making people have fun with the season. So I'll take it that way. I just don't see the same joke over and over as being that funny.
  16. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Aug 14, 2013 -> 10:24 PM) In theory Robin did the right thing asking Phegley to bunt the runners over with 2 lefties coming up. Down 2 get 2 runners in scoring position with 1 out. Phegley did his job but I'm sure most of us would rather see Pheg's get a chance to hit since it's been a little while since his early call up heroics . That's our only pleasure now hoping the kids come through when it counts not watching them bunt. I know he went by the book and did the right thing. It was so predictable what would happen, though after giving them the first out. Danks' at bat was a joke. DeAza wasn't going to be hero 2 days in a row. Not this season. Oh well. I think we all knew that game was pretty much over when Miggy tied it with one swing of the bat. It was just how were we going to lose this one?
  17. So we bunt the runners over (buzzkill right there) and two guys feebly make outs to end the game. The White Sox are pure garbage. My god. When you are this far under .500 trying to sweep, just kill the bunt strategy one time. See if we hit into the double play. At least it'd be a different scenario of failure. This team is a pile of crap. Hopefully next year it'll be better. s*** that inning pisses me off.
  18. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 14, 2013 -> 10:14 PM) And it does nothing but hurt your team's chances of rebuilding. How bout signing the guy from Cuba? Where's the outrage that we are not going to get him? That's a way to rebuild FAST. There are other ways to win than hope your team loses and gets a higher draft pick. Like I said, we STILL get a first rounder no matter what. SHould be a decent player in theory.
  19. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 14, 2013 -> 10:11 PM) The Sox are 26 games under .500! I was referring to Rock's question. If we go .500, we win a TON more games during my summer.
  20. Hope Robin doesn't call for the bunt brigade.
  21. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Aug 14, 2013 -> 10:04 PM) Well, I guess the Tigers would know his weaknesses That's what I was thinking. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 14, 2013 -> 10:04 PM) Every player may flop, theres a chance. However you are increasing your odds of the best talent the more you lose after you are eliminated. I'm sorry watching an occasional Sox win is the thing that makes you happy, but its better for us as fans if they lose this season. As a fan, I can't write off seasons. I can't write off any game. Going .500 would mean ALOT more happy summer days for me. It's not an occasional win. Now, after the season? I'm not thrilled with .500, but like I said, I'd rather go .500 than get the No. 1 pick in the draft. That would probably mean my team sniffed the playoffs at least and I had an interesting summer following baseball. Who cares about the draft? It's an inexact science. They aren't going to suddenly say we can't have a first-round pick. Give me a first-round pick and I'm good with that.
  22. Here's a good example. There's the current Cuban sensation out there available for a lot of money. Sox COULD get him if they want him likely. This is tangible. He's right there. Ready to play. Rather than worry about the crapshoot called the draft, why not talk NIGHT AND DAY about signing this guy? He arguably could help turn the team around next year. There are other ways to win besides the draft where your pick might flop. I'd rather win as many games as possible to enjoy the summer and do other things to win. Besides we still get a first round draft pick every year.
  23. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 14, 2013 -> 09:52 PM) Draft slots get you more than .500 which gets you nothing. .500 gets me a lot more happy days in the summer when I like watching my team win. That means much more to me than the luck of the draft when prospects flop all the time.
  24. So Miggy hits the key HR for Detroit; Adam whiffs for the Sox in similar situation. Adam looks so uncomfortable at the plate. He should bend his knees now like Becks. Oh I know ... he got 2 hits today.
  25. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 14, 2013 -> 09:43 PM) So, every loss improves draft position. Soxtalk ... where people inexplicably care about the crapshoot called the baseball draft. You may think I'm crazy. But I'd rather finish .500 than get the No. 2 pick in the draft. I.Don't.Care.
