QUOTE (sin city sox fan @ Jul 11, 2013 -> 11:52 PM) We are only 13 games behind Detroit and have won 67% of our games against them with the current roster. Get aggressive, add 4 or 5 new bats to the lineup, and 14 out of the next 16 is possbile. That would leave us only 1 game to make up elsewhere and there's plenty of time to do it. Buy! Buy! Buy! No white flag trades in 2013!!! Well, in theory we could have already picked up Francouer, who got released and Manny. Those would be 2 new guys for the second half run. We could have traded Viciedo for our first batch of prospects, Francouer taking over in left. We could sign Manny and have him DH and trade Dunn for our second batch of prospects. Of course Francouer would hit .200 and Manny worse than that. I can see how this "rebuilding" stuff works though. There's always somebody out there who can be acquired.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 11, 2013 -> 07:17 PM) CC Sabathia was traded for Matt LaPorta, Rob Bryson, Zach Jackson, and a PTBNL. The only player who turned out to be worth a damn was the PTBNL - Michael Brantley. It's definitely risky. I'd rather sign good free agents to go with our own homegrown guys. But great free agents, not guys like Keppinger. I wish the White Sox had the Oakland A's ability to compete despite not being big spenders. Our talent evaluators must suck compared to teams like the A's and Rays.

QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Jul 11, 2013 -> 07:44 PM) Did hawk just nickname drop Big Kahuna for Phegley? Yikes. I kind of like it, but I don't know what it means and I wouldn't think Phegs will like it.

QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Jul 11, 2013 -> 09:24 PM) Hawk is now getting delusional. Hawk "If we could win this and have a good series it can change the thought process with the coaching staff and the 25 players" Whats the thought process to finally solidify 4th place. Ugh. Delusional is the RIGHT word there. Cmon Hawk you are better than that. Even had the Sox swept the series it would have meant nothing. We've been owned by so many teams and have one of the worst records in baseball. I agree we have .500 talent but we're not going to finish .500. I'd say we finish 15 to 20 below though I still could see us finishing 25 below.

I don't want to over-react, but I like what I see in Phegley. I loved after today's victory over Detroit he stood out on the field and greeted every Sox player as they ran past him toward the dugout. I'm thinking out of all our players, he at least acts like he cares more than anybody else. Some of you don't care about intangibles ... I like his intangibles. Now for his performance. He has four hits in 20 at bats. Three have been home runs. Today's homer won a game. Now an optimist could love his eight RBIs. A pessimist could be bummed by his six strikeouts against no walks and say he's just another lift and pull member of the White Sox (albeit it's just 20 at bats). At the risk of your wrath (people are going to get all mad and say we're talking about 20 measly at bats), I want to ask you ... Is Josh Phegley going to be a stud?? Or another lift and pull .210 type hitter? I like Hawk's comparison to Brian Downing. I like Phegley. Do you??

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 11, 2013 -> 02:18 AM) Ok, DFA Troncoso He's one of the worst players to wear a Sox jersey in a while. He and Axe both have to go. Axe is just wasting time. He needs to get on with his life and enter the business world or something.

QUOTE (OilCan @ Jul 11, 2013 -> 12:18 AM) And, as much as some want to bash Thornton, he's a lefty who throws 95mph. Teams value that plus his experience. We'll see if teams value that. If Thornton throws that hard, it's straight as an arrow because nobody has trouble hitting him. He also walks people. In my opinion, he's the definition of a very bad relief pitcher. Like fathom or somebody said the other day, he should be a guy who comes in to face one lefty and get him the hell out of there. Situational lefty vs. lefty.

Haven't we seen enough of Axe? Can you say middle reliever?

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 10, 2013 -> 10:41 PM) Because if you trade Sale, you are going to end up trading everything on the roster. And, I mean, it's cool to get back prospects, and some of them turn out, but, well, these things have a tendency to fail and fall apart. Whereas you keep Sale and you already have an ace, plus 2-3 other legitimate starters and a few others on the way, and then you can patchwork an offense back together and make the playoffs. The Giants have won 2 of the last 3 World Series with that exact same philosophy. This isn't the sexy take on the White Sox rebuild, but the second paragraph here truthfully is probably the best way to go.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jul 10, 2013 -> 03:58 AM) s***ty talent relative to the rest of the AL? If they were in the east? Jesus. Sniffing .500? If that's their ceiling then this season was over before it started. What is your point? Sox are 17 below .500. I contend that mainly because of pitching and some good (on paper) everyday hitters/fielders, this team should be around .500. 17 below prior to the all-star break is much much different from that.
-
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jul 10, 2013 -> 03:46 AM) Not really. Tonight doesn't prove a thing. Even the worst teams will have 5-10 games out of 162 in which they look awesome. This team is awful and I look forward to seeing what Hahn does with our veteran assets and what guys like Phegley and Beckham do for the rest of the year. This team is awful, but the question is "why is it awful?" You can argue that, on paper, it is a team that should be sniffing .500.

Rios and Dunn may never have more value than right now. Wow. To Alex Rios ... sorry for implying you are a dog in some of my posts this season. To tie an ALL TIME AL record for hits in a nine-inning game, that's crazy special. My apologies. Dunn with his 24th homer during a crucial spot? Hmmm. His value also will never be higher. As mad as some of us fans get at you for striking out over and over, kudos tonight. It might be time to ship them both to Pittsburgh and like Fathom said, ASK FOR A TON IN RETURN while they are riding this high.
-
Well, it's time to apologize to Rios. Six hits in a 9-inning game? Ties AL record? Sets all kind of marks tonight. Holy s***, what a game for Rios. I apologize to him for ripping him a lot again this season. Well, it should be much easier to trade him anywhere now. Seriously. A game like that shows scouts he could be valuable IMO. To get six hits in a game and explode like that has to make contending teams take notice that Rios might win you a lot of games down the stretch if he's focused like that. Tonight proved several things. 1.) Rios is an enigma with a lot of talent and 2.) Viciedo may be one of those guys who needs to be pushed (benched when he f***s up) to bring out his ability. Two homers?? Where'd that come from? And 3.) The Sox are capable of playing much better than they have this season from hell.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jul 9, 2013 -> 05:52 AM) If being a heckuva player made a good manager, then Robin would be a good manager by your theory. And I'm not to respond to your Harold Baines nonsense other than if Robin were to get fired midseason, which won't happen, Mark Parent or Joe McEwing would get the job. Baines would not be in consideration. Don't worry. Now that we're done playing the Cubs I'm sure I won't be in any game threads the rest of the season. The game threads will be back to 4 pages I'm sure. I just don't understand why people don't want to blame Robin for this mess of a team.
-
QUOTE (oldsox @ Jul 9, 2013 -> 03:51 AM) I now like Rios much better than I did five minutes ago. I just thought the exact same thing.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jul 9, 2013 -> 05:22 AM) Get the f*** out of here troll. No one in their right mind would suggest Baines as manager. That's by far, without question, the single dumbest idea I have seen written on this message board. I know that claim gets said a lot in some form or another, but I honestly mean it this time. Just an absolutely pathetic comment to make and you should be incredibly embarrassed if you weren't a blatant troll. What's your problem? You think Ventura is a good manager? Why can't Baines finish out the year? You act like he's some kind of chump. Harold Baines was a heckuva player, just like Ventura. What's your problem with Baines? Why would I be "embarrassed" at the mention of Baines. He's one of my favorite players of all time and he was a gamer and a smart player, too. WTF? Your reaction is like I recommended re-hiring Bevington or something.
-
QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Jul 9, 2013 -> 05:08 AM) Why does it matter. I guess cause he appears overmatched. Let another former Sox give it a try. It's Baines' turn.
-
Would anybody lose any sleep if Robin was fired after this debacle? I certainly would not give a s*** if he got canned. He's wealthy. He'd be fine.
-
QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Jul 9, 2013 -> 04:53 AM) Greg is hard to put pressure on a team when our offense doesn't show up. Why can't anybody ever drive in a run?? Lexi was on second with one out. Predictably, nothing came of it.
-
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jul 9, 2013 -> 04:52 AM) You can spin this however you want, but the numbers in 2011 & 2012 don't lie. He has been terrible in high leverage situations over the past few years. I will always appreciate how dominant he once was, but he is no longer that pitcher. The current version s***s the bed more often than not when the pressure is on. And that means in a trade we get two minor leaguers of average ability, right?
-
Wow. The fans really cleared out. I don't think many of them will be back unless provided free tix.
-
Remember when Lexi got that double in a tie game? Stranded him. Sox never put pressure on the opponent in close games. How bout getting a hit and taking the lead once in a while?? You continually fail in a tie game and finally, boom, the other team, even one as bad as the Cubs takes charge. Part of the zombie like mentality of this team has to fall on Robin. Hopefully Robin recognizes he may not be cut out for this and resigns after the season.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 9, 2013 -> 03:41 AM) I woudn't take the big league team, but good luck in finding anyone that thinks the Sox organization is in better shape than the Marlins (owners/payroll being equal). The Astros and Marlins suck, but at least they have very good farm systems. The Sox have one of the worst in the game, as you know. The two organizations that are in huge trouble going forward are the Sox and Brewers, in my opinion. Bad big league clubs with mediocre farm systems in divisions that are trending upwards. So how many years of this kind of baseball are we talking about? 2? 5? 10?

QUOTE (Knackattack @ Jul 9, 2013 -> 03:40 AM) Not to be a dick but everything I've seen you post about the return on anybody is that we're not going to get anything good, so I'm gonna ignore that input. I think we'll get bodies. We're going to find out if they are any good. I just don't see teams giving up much for a rental in Crain. Isn't he a free agent after this year? And Matt Thornton? Cmon. That ship has sailed. That leaves guys like Peavy, Dunn and Rios. I happen to think we'll not be able to move Rios or Dunn and with Peavy's injury history? What general manager can give up studs for Jake Peavy at this point? I'd say our best bet to get a decent player is for Peavy, but a GM has to be careful with his history.
