Just what Dick Allen is saying. It doesn't make much sense to move these two guys if the Sox have to pay that kind of money to get rid of them. Like that analysis said, they have no value.
-
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jul 19, 2013 -> 07:44 PM) That's not how economics work, Greg. The owners don't set prices based on what it takes to pay their players. They set prices at the maximum level people will pay (maximize revenue), and then they invest the required money in players to keep their fans interested (minimize cost) and remain profitable. You say, 'then they invest the required money in players to keep their fans interested.' I'm saying fans would be more interested if they JUST SAY NO to mega, multi-year contracts for guys who fail miserably shortly after signing the contracts. When Adam Dunn is hitting about .160 and Rios is loafing after fly balls you start to wonder how much better life would be as a fan if they were not making all that money. Maybe I could park for 5 bucks and not spend 30 bucks on three beers in a nine-inning game.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 19, 2013 -> 03:17 PM) Of the 45 MLB contracts $100 million and over, in at least 38 or 39 cases, the team handing out the contract most likely regrets it. I don't know why Greg is getting ripped. He happens to be right. I just want to keep repeating it over and over and over until somebody notices! QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jul 19, 2013 -> 03:48 PM) I don't think anyone disagrees that you'd rather not give players huge money, long-term contracts because of all the risk involved. That said, individual teams don;t get to set the market -- this is simply the price of admission. These contracts get signed where supply meets demand. But I'm saying there should NOT be the demand. I keep reading about guys who are "untradeable." These guys are the ones fans and owners were drooling over shortly before they became untradeable. JUST SAY NO. Don't sign guys to long-term deals and maybe I can go sit in a box seat for 20 f***ing dollars and not have to pay 20 bucks to park!!!! And not pay 15 bucks for an All American hot dog and beer! Baseball was not invented as an elitist game, folks.
-
Crazy? Two guys we are desperate to get rid of? I don't understand reasoning sometimes. Why should they be dying to get Alex Rios and Alexei Ramirez? The Pirates are doing OK without both and both are not all-star caliber players.
-
Glad to see the AL win again after a few years on the losing end. NL didn't do squat this year. Nice job, AL.

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jul 19, 2013 -> 04:33 AM) OF Joc Pederson. All you need to know. Sox would want him and he would be the center piece I like what I read about him. If LA truly has no room for him through 2017, then send LA Alexei, Rios and Crain. Would that do it? If not give them Peavy instead of Crain and get in return Joc plus another prospect. If they don't want an outfielder in Rios, then give them Dunn instead of Rios. What is a fair return for Joc? He sounds like a prospect the Sox might want to acquire while there's a realistic chance of getting him.
-
I'm saying nobody should get one of these contracts. Then the problem would be solved and a "decent" box seat might cost 20 bucks instead of 60. As far as my silly little tangent, Ben Maller is the one who started it. I'm just responding to the current bust, Kemp.
-
Would they trade Alvarez for Rios, Alexei and Crain? Throw in Mitchell if we have to? Young power hitting third baseman?

QUOTE (WilliamTell @ Jul 16, 2013 -> 03:43 AM) I do love her and she says she loves me which I believe. Overall we had a great first year, just the last few months have been a little rocky but I'm hoping we can figure it out. I'm not going to call it a disaster yet but we both realize we need to have our baby's interest first overall. If we're going to keep fighting it's not best for the baby to be around that. She wants us to go to counseling so I'm going to give it a chance. I'm sure I'll learn a lot out of it. One thing she has said a couple times is she thinks we're more like roommates right now instead of boyfriend and girlfriend. Haha I NEED TO BE MORE ROMANTIC!!!!! But at least Bar Rescue has started up again because we both love watching that show haha. All in all I believe we can work this out. There's not another person I would rather be with. Your last sentence was the best. If that's true you should tell her that. Also, I think if that's true, you'll be fine (unless she wants out). May I ask what you do for a living? By the way, I completely understand why you'd be pissed that at the last second she told you you coulda gone to play softball. Seemed like a s***ty thing to say instead of kissing you and thanking you for giving up something very important to you. I know one softball game is nothing, but it's pretty obvious you didn't really want to be at the rehearsal. s***, you coulda come after the softball game. It just seems like a b****y thing for her to say IMO.

QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Jul 18, 2013 -> 04:24 PM) I like it for keeping in touch with family and friends and the ability to quickly share and view photos. But, the political stuff drives me nuts. .... As I said, it is nice to keep in touch with friends and family. Exactly. I don't understand why some of my relatives won't get facebook. While I don't post much and don't read a ton of posts, it's good to look at pictures of family members and friends and see what's important to them. QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Jul 18, 2013 -> 04:43 PM) I don't have a facebook account. I was told by everyone in 2005 that I'd "have" to have one eventually and I'd cave soon. Shack's post made me realize that nope, still not missing much. I have a lot of relatives who refuse to use facebook. I think if you like to look at pictures of family members and old friends, you are missing out. Otherwise you probably made an OK decision regarding Facebook. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jul 18, 2013 -> 10:23 PM) I dont have a real facebook. If I want to talk to you, Ill find you. If you want to talk to me, youll find me. I have no interest in reliving the glory of my youth and rehashing how badass I was in High School/College. I know, I lived it. But I just dont need there to be any way someone can attach my name to something illegal. I am on a Facebook page of people in my grade school in Chicago and high school both, and a lot of college friends, and there isn't a lot of that type of stuff going on. People aren't really playing the nostalgia game. It's just kind of cool, for me at least, to check out my former classmates/friends and see pix of their families, etc. I don't recall any posts starting out, "Remember when we did this in Misses O'Malley's Class?" "Remember how that nun beat the s*** out of Tommy?" etc. In summation, I hate posting stuff on Facebook because people type the dumbest comments in response to my post. So I don't post much. I hit the 'like' button a lot, and once in a while make a comment about somebody else's posts. What's the harm in Facebook? I'll tell you one thing, I can't convince my sister to join. She gets all mad and freaks out (probably the mood meds she's been on since her divorce) about a lot of things, including facebook. I definitely do not resemble the opinionated Greg I am on here. I pretty much shut up and mind my own business on facebook.

Ben Maller just Tweeted this: "Dodgers Matt Kemp (injured now) is on pace for 7 HR's and 41 RBIs this season despite $20,250,000 salary. #Bust #Fail" My take: When will owners/GMs learn that it is ridiculous to sign these stars to huge contracts?? At least in the NFL you are allowed to cut a guy and not have to fulfill the terms of the contract, making the signing bonus the important thing. Pujols contract; A-Rod contract, etc. ... here's how it goes. In winter, fans erupt in joy when their teams sign free agents to MASSIVE multi-year contracts. Then a few months later, they begin to lament the contracts until the day they run out. Why do GMs and owners continue to make these mistakes?? If there was sanity in baseball negotiations, it wouldn't cost 60 bucks to get a halfway decent seat at a baseball game.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jul 18, 2013 -> 08:58 PM) Most General Managers do not agree with you though. I could care less who disagrees violently. I understand Dunn's flaws. But what you are failing to grasp is the positives that he provides. Guys that take walks and hit a s***load of homers don't grown on trees. If Dunn were not on this baseball team this season they would be a lot closer to the worst record in baseball. What Dunn provides is important. The team is just so bad that what he provides doesn't really make much of a difference. There are many players on the White Sox that are a lot worse than Dunn but you insist on beating this dead horse and I don't really understand why. I would think if his current value is $10 million a year then we could trade him by contributing some cash. I will say this. ... if Dunn is as valuable as you say, he probably isn't even on the trading block. Sox are probably happy to try it again next year.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 18, 2013 -> 08:52 PM) Viciedo Oh, thanks. Maybe the all-star break will help him. He definitely needs to get his act together.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jul 18, 2013 -> 08:42 PM) I don't know how to answer this. You have an agenda. You always have. Someone a long time ago poisoned you that strikeouts are bad. Dunn has value. Even when Adam Dunn was a monster there were many people who didn't like the way he played baseball. Dunn was always paid to hit 40 bombs, walk 100 times, score a bunch of runs, and have an .ops near .900. He did that job consistently for many many years. Teams were willing to live with the batting average under .230 and 120+ strikeouts a season. Dunn's .obp with the Sox has not been good enough. However, I believe he does have the 2nd highest .obp on the team and made like the 3rd fewest outs on the team last season. Every season there is a chance that Dunn will lead the league in homers, walks, and strikeouts. I would take that every time from him. If Dunn finishes his deal with the Sox the overall 4 year product will still be characterized as a disappointment. Even after probably 125+ homers in a Sox uniform all because of that 1st season. Is he overpaid? Yes. As a free agent though I still think Dunn gets a 2 year deal at $10 per season. What he offers a team is very valuable. He just should not be expected to be a team's best player. Good post, but I can't see him getting $10 million a season anytime in the future. You can blame age, but I'd blame production. Re. Dunn. It's the annual advanced stats people vs. normal stat people. When he goes 1-for-30 or strikes out 3-4 times in a game, I think that contributes to lineup lethargia and overall team s***tiness. Maybe he does have some value, but I think most people who do not follow advanced stats closely would disagree violently. To many people, Dunn is a lineup wrecker because of his Ks and long stretches of awful-ness.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 18, 2013 -> 01:35 PM) No greg, we know. You just will never admit it. Years ago, the Sox would have been accused of simply choking. I think it's all subjective. Last year's team was in the hunt all year, then boom. Loss after loss the final few weeks and season ova.
-
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jul 17, 2013 -> 08:04 PM) He's f***ing terrible. Who are we talking about here?
-
Any stat that says Adam Dunn is a good hitter has to be questioned. If he's a good hitter, why aren't teams lining up to acquire him? I'd be shocked if he doesn't just retire after the current contract expires or play for pennies. I want people on the record on this topic. Does anybody else think Adam Dunn is a "good hitter?" I say NO.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 18, 2013 -> 03:38 AM) Except those were talented teams capable of making the playoffs who got thrown off by the managers antics. But I guess a funny manager is more important than winning. See, we'll never know. I was told by a respected poster that last year's collapse was cause the Sox ran out of gas and were injured. How the heck do we know that? We blame running out of gas because Robin is liked. How do we know Oz's antics affected the team in any way? You still have to hit the ball and pitch the ball and field it. Why does Oz get blamed and not Robin?

QUOTE (LVSoxFan @ Jul 17, 2013 -> 05:07 PM) That's the way I heard it, it was basically the two sons fighting for Dad's (JR's) loyalty. KW won. It seemed like they were both jockeying for favor once we won the WS, each convinced that they were more responsible for it than the other. God I don't miss that soap opera. At least it was interesting. If we weren't gonna win it anyway, it was fun to follow the soap opera. I rather got a kick out of Oz's postgame and pregame interviews. I thought they were funny. This year there's nothing to follow except ridiculously bad baseball.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 17, 2013 -> 05:52 PM) He's an .800 OPS player with 40 home run and 90-100 rbi production....there just aren't many bats like that available. The salary isn't something to scoff at, but I don't think it's prohibitive either. I think if Dunn keeps hitting as he has been for the last two months, someone will take him off our hands come the end of the month AND give us a decent prospect or two for him. You know if we were in the race we would I've been thinking about this. I still say there's no way in hell anybody takes Dunn off the Sox hands. Sox paid him an insane amount of money. He'll still be here striking out until the final day of that deal.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 17, 2013 -> 10:37 AM) f*** nostalgia, Sale got hosed. Even national writers agree. I hope we see Rivera in the playoffs! Playoffs? Playoffs? Cue Jim Mora, please, we ain't going to the f***ing playoffs.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 16, 2013 -> 05:03 PM) Robin definitely deserves plenty of blame. But with 2012 and 2013 being such divergent stories, I don't think we'll really know who he is as a manager until he plays out at least part of 2014, when he will inevitably have a very different roster. Great post. That's all I want. Fans to blame Robin some. I like Robin. I have no problem with him continuing as manager. But his staff has failed miserably this season. That's OK. I don't want him to be fired. I'm just laughing because if the former manager had orchestrated this first half ... wow, he'd be run out of town. This team looks like it is managed by Andy the Clown, God rest Andy's soul.

QUOTE (Baron @ Jul 15, 2013 -> 11:54 PM) Damn those facts Ozzie buried himself by talking about things other than baseball with media. He let his ego ruin a good career in the game of baseball. He'll never be back, except POSSIBLY as a coach if an owner lets a manager hire him as third base coach again.
-
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 15, 2013 -> 11:22 PM) And both times it is you against pretty much everyone. Strange how that works. How many titles has Ozzie won in Miami? How many parades has he ridden in? I'm just amazed that people aren't burying Robin for the collapse last year followed by this 17 below .500 first half. It's the worst performance by a baseball team this season. I'm thinking it's all because he's so quiet. Let's face it, nobody cares about White Sox baseball except us diehards. With Robin making no noise except uttering the cliches, I'm surprised you guys refuse to bury Robin or at least agree he deserves an F for his first-half managing, dating all the way to spring training. Every aspect of this team except starting pitching and closing has been a disaster. Ozzie is gone because of his mouth. He'll never return cause of his mouth. I love Robin the player. I just am concerned about his ability to manage and/or inspire players to not make boneheaded mistakes and/or choke.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 15, 2013 -> 10:02 PM) The Orioles remain the most attractive destination for Dunn, and that's not likely to happen. Still, Dunn hitting 6th in that lineup would be deadly. **Sorry, had to edit, forgot Showalter is dumb and has Boom Davis hitting 5th. Dunn would hit 7th. I don't know about "deadly." You could look at it another way and say he'll ruin that lineup if he gets in one of his patented strikeout funks. Their professional hitters are probably not used to seeing such ineptitude on a fairly frequent basis. It's going to be great to rebuild and not have Dunn around anymore.
