  1. All I can say is now I know how I sound and sounded to you guys when defending Ozzie. I won't argue it any more because just as you couldn't get through to me and can't get through to me regarding my love of Ozzie, I won't be able to get through to you about Robin.
  2. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 15, 2013 -> 09:40 PM) Not contending. More than just the fielding has sabotaged that. The injuries have killed, the death of Konerko has really, really, really killed (we desperately need an impact, middle of the order bat and he hasn't been there), and the slow starts by a couple guys (De Aza, Dunn, Keppinger) did damage as well. If we were playing the same level defense we were last year, I think we're a couple games below .500, maybe even .500. If Konerko was hitting like he did last year on top of that, then I'd think we were contending. Maybe not 1b, but at least able to give it the ol' college try. Now that's a post I agree with. IF Sox were playing decent defense, team would be near .500. Now, cmon, folks, Sox are playing 14 games below capability?? Robin deserves a pile of blame and a big fat grade of F this year after his A- from last year. The collapse is the reason for the minus.
  3. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 15, 2013 -> 07:51 PM) I went to an Orioles game a month or so and I looked at their lineup, it was something like McLouth, Markakis, Jones, Davis, Machado, at the time all these guys were WELL over .300. More than half their lineup. Actually there was a 6th person who I don't remember but at the time he was also over .300, whoever the DH was, Dickerson I thiink. And then I looked at our lineup for s***s and giggles, not a single one. Rios was heads and shoulders over everyone else and he was at about .285, everyone else was in the .240s or so. That's got nothing to do with a manager. The hitters just suck. Very true about the hitting, but in the past we'd have blamed Walker. I hear very little Manto hate. Let's face it. Robin is very very likeable because he says nothing controversial. I think I have a case for thinking Robin is a horrible horrible manager (how many close games have we pissed away because of defense; just about every game is a close game except when we get blown out). I can see where you point to the hitting and not blaming Robin, but again ... when we didn't hit under Oz we blamed Walker. This is all cliche. Right now Robin is getting a free pass IMO. 17 under .500??? With this team? Robin defenders please explain how we can be that bad? And don't forget the epic collapse the last few weeks of last season. He got a free pass for that as well. It was more or less, 'oh well.' GMs take this stuff seriously. I can't imagine Hahn is shrugging off -17.
  4. QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Jul 15, 2013 -> 06:51 PM) The market for Rios is really weak right now. He's too risky an acquisition for a GM. Rios is the kind of player who can get a GM fired. My guess is we can't move him unless it's for 2 really really fringe prospects. Agreed bucket of suck?
  5. QUOTE (kwolf68 @ Jul 15, 2013 -> 04:03 PM) It's another source Sox fans can exercise our desire to complain. I think Sox fans have a cynical and somewhat bipolar side to us, especially the old timers. I remember sitting in the stands during a game in the late 80s completely moaning and b****ing about the state of affairs with some dude I didn't know. But an hour later we were pouring over the American League red book looking at White Sox prospects talking World Series in 2 years. I don't like fairy dust fans where everything is wonderful as you look up at the scoreboard watching your team roll to their 90th loss. Some of my best times with Sox fans in old Comiskey was just b****ing about things. I loved that. It's the nature of being a White Sox fan. To this day you want to get me on a good rant...ask me about 1983, the horrid call on the fair/foul ball in Game 2 against the Orioles that probably cost the White Sox that series BEFORE our offense pooped the bed in Game 4. That series is on the Dybber's baserunning gaffe. Ridiculous.
  6. QUOTE (kwolf68 @ Jul 15, 2013 -> 04:09 PM) Ventura can't do anything with this team. It's not a very good team. A rebuild is the best thing. Lets see how he works with that before making a case to remove him. Robin is so well liked that posts like this IMO are the majority opinion. People are blaming the players rather than turning on the manager as they did Ozzie (because Oz was a loudmouth). My take is that Robin's team has had a horrendous first half, baserunning mistakes, defensive mistakes, embarrassing gaffes. If I were GM I'd be pissed because this is a .500 team, not a team 17 below .500 for gawdsakes. The GM should be FURIOUS at Robin. 17 below .500 with this pitching staff, pissing away game after game partly because of embarrassing defense? You've got to be kidding me.
  7. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jul 15, 2013 -> 03:14 AM) Based on the evidence available, the laws in Florida basically say its legal. It's obviously more complicated, but that's the gist of it. Interesting. You think this guy Zimmerman will have to go into exile like Casey Anthony? I mean a kook might try to kill him, but still MURDER IS ILLEGAL. Whomever kills him will serve life in jail or get the death penalty. A good friend of mine was murdered years ago. The guy is in jail for life, but has gotten into a lot of trouble in jail and is still trying to escape from time to time. He's a bad motherf***er. But would I kill him if I had the chance? Hell no. I don't want to serve life in jail or get fried.
  8. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 13, 2013 -> 10:01 PM) Not on Soxtalk Yes, but I think overall, he escaped even the wrath of Soxtalk. I remember ripping Thornton several times and getting it shoved back in my face. So I tended to tread rather lightly regarding Thornton. He had his staunch supporters because of his overall numbers. A lot of my criticism is the eye test. It seems an inordinate amount of games I've watched the last 2-3 years have included Thornton failing.
  9. Sox blew it when they didn't hire Francona. Since we didn't get him, I'd be all for keeping Robin, cause there's really nobody impactful out there. If the Rays would fire Madden, or Madden would want to move to a big market, sure. But that's not happening. Maybe if LaRussa would do it. If we can't get LaRussa, I'd say keep Robin. I don't want any current coaches off teams like Martinez. I want a proven manager with our next hire. With our talent, it's really not going to matter for a few years, unless Tito is in charge. I think Francona would have this team in the hunt probably. If Robin decides to step down, I'd immediately promote Coop and let him try.
  10. Haven't followed this case, unlike the Casey Anthony case and Jodi Arias and some of the other hi profile cases of the last few years. That said, I've read Whitlock's stuff on foxsports about race issues. What's the quick take on this case?? Did the jury not have anything to go by? Why is he innocent? Is it more of the lack of evidence thing?
  11. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jul 9, 2013 -> 05:31 PM) At some point she'll get sick of waiting. Casually ask for her digits and come armed with an idea of a date to possibly set up. Also, bring a box of Magnums just in case. Great post. What's the update on this badger situation? You could always take her to a Sox game and have the Sox ruin some other aspect of a fan's life (kidding somewhat). What's the update, Badger? I don't read these threads for my health u know?
  12. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 15, 2013 -> 12:44 AM) One outing, one loss for Thornton Did they boo him? He really, truly can't pitch anymore.
  13. Cleveland has 51 wins. Terry Francona was available at one point to manage our Sox. Fail.
  14. Nice game one win. Split however, Philly wins tomorrow to take 2 of 3 and have the Sox stagger into all star break as the most disappointing team in baseball. Royals not far behind, them, however, considering they were supposed to be better. Robin is a nice guy and a former Sox phenom, no doubt about it, but he is a joke of a manager. Robin grade this year: D. Team grade: F.
  15. QUOTE (flavum @ Jul 13, 2013 -> 11:53 PM) I'm happy for Danks, but if somebody wants to offer something fair and take his 14.25x3 years....he gawn. This is why baseball frustrates me so much (besides the umpires). These guys sign multi year contracts and with very few exceptions, immediately the teams and the fans regret the terms of the contract. It's insane. You sign a guy and once the honeymoon is over (the offseason), teams and fans immediately want to get rid of the player who just signed.
  16. If we trade him to the Tigers we'll never know if Rios would have been a bust with his next team. In the 19 games against the Sox next year and 16 in the second half this year he'll hit .420 with 18 or more homers (in 35 games) and about 60 RBIs. Trade him out of the division for gosh sakes. He'll kill the Sox just because he will.
  17. QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Jul 13, 2013 -> 08:07 PM) Matt was great for us and will be missed. His best days are behind him and he never got the credit he deserves. I wish him personal luck in Boston. When he was great and had that badass walk out song I used to love when he came in high intensity situations. He definitely got the credit he deserves. He was a popular White Sox. People always thought he was good even the nights he got lit up, which were many.
  18. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Jul 13, 2013 -> 06:45 PM) So far this is a typical Soxtalk thread regarding Sox player values. Our guys are all worth s*** until they get traded, and then its we never got enough. Not at all. This is exactly the type player I expected. 10th rounder types for our older players.
  19. Braves have a ton of outfield injuries. Time to ship them Rios.
  20. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 13, 2013 -> 05:43 AM) You were expecting a great prospect for Matt Thornton? If this is what we got in return for Jesse Crain, I'd be pissed. But Matt Thornton's kind of bad now. I'm not expecting much for Crain at all. The guy is on the DL. The guy is aging. The guy is a free agent after the season. The guy can't close. Yes, his scoreless innings streak was INCREDIBLE. I applaud him, but I think we'll get two prospects of the Jacobs variety. What do you expect for Crain?
  21. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 13, 2013 -> 03:50 AM) So Veal, Purcey, Moskos and Santos Rodriguez our the top 4 LH relievers at the moment. Yes, scary. But you must admit Thornton wasn't exactly effective and he was only going to get worse. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Jul 13, 2013 -> 04:12 AM) Tired of players that have no natural talent coming into a system that does not develop them. Great post, Harry. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 13, 2013 -> 04:17 AM) Pretty good value for someone who's now a overpaid mediocre reliever. How can you say we got good value? This guy we got is a total longshot. Granted, I'd rather acquire a hitter than a pitcher, but Jacobs is not exactly a prime prospect.
  22. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jul 12, 2013 -> 04:53 PM) Would you guys give Beckham a 3 year deal at $10 million right now? Would he even take it? Or are you guys saying that we should wait and sign him to like a 5-6 year below market at season's end if he keeps this up? Either way, he'd still be a tradeable asset whenever. Sure. Isn't Kepp making more than 3 mill a season? At the worst, Beckham is way better than Kepp.
  23. Good luck to Thornton. I do hope he has success. He frustrated the hell out of me as a Sox fan the past couple seasons. He seemed to have so much talent compared to some of the lefty stiffs we've trotted out there, but he got hit just like the rest of them. This should re-energize him mentally if he needed a kick in the pants. I know nothing about him so I don't know if complacency ever set in with him or he just got hit.
  24. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 13, 2013 -> 04:01 AM) I don't mind this trade by Kenny Williams It's funny, as I got done reading the newest BA that says Jacobs was the biggest disappointment of the first half for Red Sox farm system. Yikes. Kind of scary, Fathom, but predictable. What a coincidence you read that right before the trade. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jul 13, 2013 -> 04:11 AM) Anybody, that is complaining about this deal, what did you expect? Everyone wanted Thornton out of here and has been on the downside of his career as of late. Getting Boston's 11th rated prospect according to mlb.com is pretty good value. He's 22 in AA, has very high offensive potential while his defense is a work in progress. I like it. I thought some people were saying Thornton had real value. This screams 'salary dump' to me. Of course I can't prove the prospect we got will never pan out. Sounds to me like management hopes he's the next Konerko. I hope he's not the next Dunn (a K machine). QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ Jul 13, 2013 -> 04:23 AM) Send him back to LSU and see if Les Miles needs a receiver with one year of eligibility. Buddy Bell has lost all credibility with me by continuing to tout Mitchell. It ain't happening. Wasn't Mitchell a first-round pick? Another example of a draft pick gone bad? You mean the draft is an inexact science, especially with the White Sox? QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 13, 2013 -> 04:28 AM) Another football player. They are determined to have one of these guys pan out. Great line, Dick Allen. Nice line. My take: Salary dump. Salary dump. Salary dump. The guy is 22? I'd say either he plays for our team by the time he's a young 24, or forget him.
  25. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 11, 2013 -> 06:54 AM) The Lone Ranger, White House Down, Oblivion and After Earth would tend to agree with you...with only World War Z barely breaking through well enough to launch a sequel. But if you've watched Pan's Labyrinth, you'll have reason enough to understand why this director is worth checking out...to me, he's much more talented than Zach Snyder, Michael Bay, Emmerich, etc. Despicable Me 2 was disappointing, and Grown-Ups 2 hasn't even been released to critics. AND NOW WE KNOW WHY. Critic Reviews for Grown Ups 2 All Critics (7) | Top Critics (3) | My Critics | Fresh (0) | Rotten (7) Yes, it's time for another visit to the Adam Sandler Death-of-Cinema Fun Factory, the big-screen version of a terrible sitcom where laugh tracks are replaced by the co-stars chuckling at their own awful material. Throughout, gags are cartoonishly broad and afforded so little time for setup and delivery we seem to be watching less a story than a catalog of tossed-out material. A phoned-in ode to lazy comedy and staggering stupidity. Almost aggressively more of the same. If you hated the last one, you'll be in misery all over again. If you took to the predecessor, you'll find this one a fitting continuation. The most horrifying depiction of inhuman behavior since That's My Boy. Or maybe Jack & Jill. Or maybe Blue Velvet. Another lowbrow make-work project for Sandler's jock cronies, SNL has-been hangers-on and Dan Patrick. QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Jul 11, 2013 -> 06:13 PM) Anyone who pays to see that movie shouldn't be allowed to breed. I almost walked out of Grown Ups I. It just was so f***ing boring. I agree with you on your joke about not being allowed to breed. How could anybody pay to see Grown Ups II?
