QUOTE(AnthraxFan93 @ Feb 2, 2005 -> 10:22 PM) Did anyone notice the press conference.. Sammy got a new home, and how this was sammys team? Umm Did someone fail to mention to Sosa, that they have a all-star SS who puts up better numbers? Baltimore will regret this deal. The Orioles track record of the last few years is to spend their money very stupidly. The Mets too.

QUOTE(southsider17 @ Feb 3, 2005 -> 08:52 AM) I liked Wills but the "Sox chip on his shoulder" post earlier pegged it pretty good. The only on-air personality I couldn't do without is Rooney. The rest, especially DJ and Farmer, can go. Rooney's an underrated pro. If a color guy follows his lead, the game experience can be a really good one for the fan. I never cared much for DJ but when he worked with Rooney on one Sox telecast while Hawk was away at some golf tourney they did real well together. A big thumbs up for John Rooney.

QUOTE(Heads22 @ Jan 29, 2005 -> 12:41 PM) http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/stor...yson&id=1977943 Figured you guys would like to know.... He could always pitch batting practice. Oh he already did that didn't he?

Sammy minus cork and steroids is barely a shadow of his former self.

It would be nice to see some national writers show a little balance and fairness like this when comparing the two Chicago teams.

QUOTE(JimH @ Feb 1, 2005 -> 10:24 AM) I would not have a promo but I would try to subtlely market to Cub fans. Let them come and boo him, cheer him, whatever ... and let them add to the White Sox bottom line. They'll be there in large numbers loud, drunk, boisterous and obnoxious. Half won't know the score or the inning at any given time, and many will try to goad others around them into a fight. It will be reported on ESPN and everyone will say the Cell is a dangerous place and Sox fans all live in the same trailer next to the Ligues.

QUOTE(AnthraxFan93 @ Feb 1, 2005 -> 08:55 AM) Hell Yeah, more evidence that KW needs to be shipped out the door.. Hey JR.. get on the phone to Stoney.. at least we know he can handle the job.. of course we won't get him.. he costs money.. Be careful. KW has rehabilitated his image somewhat the last two years. Now everyone (well almost) likes the guy. Nevertheless Koch for Foulke will go down as one of the worst trades in MLB baseball history.

I'm curious to see if he can still play. I still think it's crazy to sign him to a long term deal at this point. Boras doesn't impress me as being particularly intelligent, but he is smooth, cunning and persistent. He jerked Tom Hicks' chains real good on the ARod deal. I bet Ordonez is hoping he'll do the same for him.

Once upon a time, actually once upon a real long time ago when I was in high school there was a sizeable Japanese-American population in the Lake View, Uptown and Edgewater neighborhoods. Many of the offspring of these first and second generation Japanese attended Lake View and Senn High Schools. I'm of the opinion that many of them have either A moved to the burbs or B left the area altogether for the Sun Belt. Just like many other natives of old Chicago neighborhoods. Rose Toguri , who was Tokyo Rose eventually came to live in the Uptown neighborhood of Chicago, after her post war ordeal was over. I don't know if she's still alive or not, she should be well into her eighties.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jan 26, 2005 -> 08:00 AM) I was trying to get a feel for this team by comparing them to another of the Sox teams that I have seen. I came to the conclusion that this team really resembles the 1983 team in a lot of ways. They have speed at the top of the order, thump in the middle of the order, great range on defense, and an entirely solid pitching staff. Opinions? Any other better teams to compare these guys too? The early 80's is about as far back as I remember well. I'm not so sold on the starting rotation. MB and Garcia should be solid. El Duque will be fine if he's healthy but is he? Contreras has been "inconsistent" to put it mildly and we've all been over the enigma of Jon Garland a million times. I like the bullpen. I'm not convinced about the rotation, but give KW credit for going out and getting El Duque.

The internment of Japanese-Americans during WW2 was an inexcusable wrong. However it doesn't rank even close to holocausts perpetuated in Ukraine, Armenia, Cambodia and Nazi Germany.

Thanks. Not living in Chicago makes it difficult to keep up with all the news as it happens. I've not been a big fan of KW but the man has flat out busted his tail this off season. Whether things work out or not remains to be seen, but given his constraints, he's played his hand about as well as can be expected.

QUOTE(Jabroni @ Jan 27, 2005 -> 04:45 PM) Who cares about Ray King's opinion? He apparently never even faced Iguchi because Iguchi was not even on Japan's team... Japan All Star Series '04 Roster http://losangeles.dodgers.mlb.com/NASApp/m...nt=roster_japan Ray King was listed as on the MLB team though... http://losangeles.dodgers.mlb.com/NASApp/m...tent=roster_mlb Just goes to show that Ray King must not be very bright. Not very bright and not all that good either.

Screw him. The Mets? They are IMHO the dumbest, and one of the most badly run franchises in MLB.

Are there any homes in the 150-200K range in the Chicago area, or is that just funny?

QUOTE(YASNY @ Jan 24, 2005 -> 10:46 AM) I agree with your thinking here. ............ Which I find disturbing for some reason. Me too. It was hard to agree with someone named "anthrax".

QUOTE(AnthraxFan93 @ Jan 24, 2005 -> 10:43 AM) I am giving him 3 grades A- for effort, and keeping his word of changing the make-up of this team. B- for the actually players.. Final Grades are due in October. I think that's a fair and accurate assessment.

How not to win friends in a volatile part of the world. The neocons are just as arrogant as their liberal brethren who pursued the Viet Nam war. Actually I take that back. So far they are even more arrogant. Tell the kids to quit crying, Democracy is just around the corner.

I actually saw some of it live, albeit on TV. What a high after game 1. After game 2 I knew the Sox were in trouble. Long time ago. Seems like just yesterday.

Hope you have a great time here and FWIW loyalty to Maggs made quite an ass of me. Thanks Magglio.

QUOTE(NO!!MARY!!! @ Jan 21, 2005 -> 06:28 PM) He is? Isn't he from Texas? I'm surprised to see that. And while everyone is on the subject of Al Capone, Eliot Ness mentions in the book The Untouchables going to Comiskey Park to see the White Sox play the Yankees, and Ted Lyons striking out Babe Ruth twice. One of his fellow agents cheered "like a kid" according to Ness. Colonel Donald P. Conroy, the real-life "Great Santini" was indeed a White Sox fan. In fact, the book mentions the Sox a few times. Robert Duvall mentions them once in the movie. Two great Chicago writers were also White Sox fans: Nelson Algren and James T. Farrell. They mention the Sox several times in their books. As for living White Sox fans, other posters pretty much covered them. Most, if not all, A-list celebs from Chicago are *sneer* Cub fans. One famous White Sox fan that no one had mentioned is former Vice-President Dan Quayle. Take that for what it's worth. Glad you mentioned Algren and Farrell, two of the best novelists the country ever produced. Algren wrote a good condensed account of the Black Sox scandal entitled The Swede Was a Hard Guy, and a humorous look at the 59 WS for the Sun Times, Go! Go! Go! Forty Years Ago.

QUOTE(LowerCaseRepublican @ Jan 18, 2005 -> 05:31 PM) I'm in secondary education (student teaching next school year at this time) and NCLB is such a pain in the ass. It doesn't do anything to benefit schools -- it was just a reactionary "We're getting tough on schools" move by people who have no clue what they are doing regarding education since they never stepped foot in a classroom as a teacher or administrator. I disagree with you on some issues but I'm right with you on this one. It's another futile attempt to upgrade education, and it's also not very conservative, which seems to be lost on many Bush supporters. First liberals and now conservatives have conspired to mangle public education in this country. I'll be interested to see how you like teaching. I tried it as a middle aged change of pace and didn't care for it at all. My dislike of the system and not young people was responsible for most of that.

QUOTE(JimH @ Jan 21, 2005 -> 11:21 AM) I don't know all of Capone's history but this much I do know ... As of about 1931, he spent most of his remaining 16 years in and out of jail. The feds got him on tax evasion and he spent a long stretch or two in Federal penitentiaries, including a stint in Alcatraz. By the time he died in 1947, he was completely ravaged from syphillus. The feds had let him out of jail during WW 2 because his mind was totally gone and he was reduced to simpleton state ... no threat to anyone. By the time Minoso would've been an up and coming young player, let's say in his teens (late 30's), Capone was for the most part in prison and already suffering from the effects of syphillus. Castro is pushing 80, I believe he's 78 or 79, which would make his year of birth 1926 or thereabouts. He came to power in 1959 and was in his very early 30's. Castro was born on August 13, 1926, you are right on the mark. Bogie is playing with us I hope, because the history he gives is completely off the mark. Steff is correct also, only one child fathered by Capone to the best of anyones knowledge. Capone was infected with his disease as a teenager, which may have affected his overall fertility.
