  1. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Dec 2, 2010 -> 04:06 PM) Or an odd nickname by Joe? I'm ashamed of you, SoxTalk. Or a tangent about some random animal? (see: Peavy thread - penguins)
  2. QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Dec 2, 2010 -> 03:48 PM) Pretty sure Oney reads Soxtalk and he is responding to me with his last tweet What'd he say?
  3. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Dec 2, 2010 -> 03:03 PM) What if you're a creationist? I don't think this by itself would refute those beliefs though? It could be easily explained away.
  4. QUOTE (DBAHO @ Dec 2, 2010 -> 02:46 PM) I think we should feel more dirty about missing than the US, the US at least had the World Cup 16 years ago, we've never had it, and if FIFA is all about taking the World Cup to new places, we should have got it. We have the stadiums built, we're a mad sporting nation and it would have been as good as Germany 2006 was IMO. FIFA is more corrupt than the IOC, NBA and other major sporting organisations around the world put together, the Panorama Documentary by the BBC proves that. Just sickens me. I wouldn't think so. I think the US and Qatar were the favorites all along. Australia faced a few problems including their isolation, the time zone, and the fact two of their major sports leagues use the stadiums in which they'd use. Of course they still have a better argument than Qatar but that's just gonna be beating a dead horse. And what sucks for Australia is that this was their last good chance for who knows how long. Since they moved to the AFC they have to wait until 2034 now and FIFA will probably award the next WC in that region to China.
  5. The largest stadium in the US would hold roughly 7% of Qatar's total population
  6. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Dec 2, 2010 -> 11:20 AM) It was definitely an unexpected result. That being said I found it funny that because Qatar won, China cant win 2026 because they are located on the same continent (Asia). Since when is Russia not located in Asia? If the rule was that you cant have the games on the same continent in back to back World Cups, shouldnt Russia's win have prevented both Europe and Asia from winning the 2022 bid? It's continent, it's confederation. So Australia is out too since they are now part of the AFC. 2026 should be a lock (it's FIFA so lockes don't exist) for the US if they wish to pursue it. Outside of Mexico and maybe Argentina I can't see another country putting together a case. Remember, the new rotation system does not allow a confederation to host another WC for 2 cycles. Europe won't be eligible until 2030 and Asia not again until 2034.
  7. QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Dec 2, 2010 -> 07:48 AM) Did you know that "Egad a base life defiles a bad age" spelled backwards is "Egad a base life defiles a bad age"? Your move, Hoss. . . Poem by Demetri Martin Dammit I'm mad. Evil is a deed as I live. God, am I reviled? I rise, my bed on a sun, I melt. To be not one man emanating is sad. I piss. Alas, it is so late. Who stops to help? Man, it is hot. I'm in it. I tell. I am not a devil. I level "Mad Dog". Ah, say burning is, as a deified gulp, In my halo of a mired rum tin. I erase many men. Oh, to be man, a sin. Is evil in a clam? In a trap? No. It is open. On it I was stuck. Rats peed on hope. Elsewhere dips a web. Be still if I fill its ebb. Ew, a spider… eh? We sleep. Oh no! Deep, stark cuts saw it in one position. Part animal, can I live? Sin is a name. Both, one… my names are in it. Murder? I'm a fool. A hymn I plug, deified as a sign in ruby ash, A Goddam level I lived at. On mail let it in. I'm it. Oh, sit in ample hot spots. Oh wet! A loss it is alas (sip). I'd assign it a name. Name not one bottle minus an ode by me: "Sir, I deliver. I'm a dog" Evil is a deed as I live. Dammit I'm mad.
  8. Pathetic. Disgraceful. Ridiculous. Corrupt. Shameful. The adjectives that can be used are endless. Seiously...South Africa => Brazil => Russia => Qatar. Not exactly bastions of security. Good luck selling westerners on traveling to Qatar for this. FIFA is the most corrupt sports body on the planet. I really hope the US starts to pull some of their sponsorship and money from these events after getting screwed over once again.
  9. Dear Me on Sunday, When all of your friends seem to be getting sick and as usual you are not, DO NOT proudly announce "oh i never get sick" to everyone who is there with you. Because now, well, guess what??? Sincerely, Should Have Seen That One Coming
  10. Dear Driver Who Speeds Up When I Try To Pass And Slows When Down When I Back Off, Stop trying to tandem drive with me and pick one damned speed. Sincerely, Cruise Control's Biggest Fan
  11. QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Nov 30, 2010 -> 10:34 AM) Dear idiot driving 5MPH under the speed limit in the left lane, MOVE THE HELL OVER! Sincerely, the 20 drivers that were forced to pass you on the right. *Likes*

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Nov 29, 2010 -> 12:44 PM) I was definitely wrong... I didn't think they'd go there. Same. I kept seeing it coming, but kept thinking there's no way it would.
  13. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Nov 23, 2010 -> 10:16 AM) That episode was epic. I've thought the last 4 or 5 have really turned around. I've enjoyed this season a lot.
  14. Obviously MSU is much better as a team this year than the Huskies, but I'm really looking forward to the Kemba Walker-Kalin Lucas matchup. Two quickest guards in the country
  15. QUOTE (Soxy @ Nov 19, 2010 -> 01:23 AM) I just included the ones that I've read. Shameful that none of Mrs. Gaskell's books are on here. I would also add that I have probably half of the other books at home and they are on my to read list. Of course at the moment I am eschewing my literary classics for a complete re-reading of the Inspector Rebus series by tartan noir author, Ian Rankin. On book 10 of 17 at the moment. Loves it. 43--Suck it BBC. I've read more of your classic literature than most Brits (ETA: I know not all of these books are British). As we say here in the colonies: BOOYA! 1 Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen 2 The Lord of the Rings - JRR Tolkien 3 Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte 4 Harry Potter series - JK Rowling 5 To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee 6 The Bible 7 Wuthering Heights - Emily Bronte 8 Nineteen Eighty-Four - George Orwell 10 Great Expectations - Charles Dickens 11 Little Women - Louisa M Alcott 13 Catch 22 - Joseph Heller 14 Complete Works of Shakespeare (I've read more than half--does that count?) 15 Rebecca - Daphne Du Maurier 16 The Hobbit - JRR Tolkien 18 Catcher in the Rye - JD Salinger 21 Gone With The Wind - Margaret Mitchell 22 The Great Gatsby - F Scott Fitzgerald 25 The Hitch Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy - Douglas Adams 33 Chronicles of Narnia - CS Lewis 34 Emma -Jane Austen 35 Persuasion - Jane Austen 36 The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe - CS Lewis 39 Memoirs of a Geisha - Arthur Golden 41 Animal Farm - George Orwell 42 The Da Vinci Code - Dan Brown (not proud of this) 46 Anne of Green Gables - LM Montgomery 48 The Handmaid’s Tale - Margaret Atwood 54 Sense and Sensibility - Jane Austen 58 Brave New World - Aldous Huxley 59 The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time - Mark Haddon 61 Of Mice and Men - John Steinbeck 64 The Lovely Bones - Alice Sebold 66 On The Road - Jack Kerouac 68 Bridget Jones’s Diary - Helen Fielding 73 The Secret Garden - Frances Hodgson Burnett 83 The Color Purple - Alice Walker 87 Charlotte’s Web - E.B. White 89 Adventures of Sherlock Holmes - Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (again, I've read about half) 91 Heart of Darkness - Joseph Conrad 92 The Little Prince - Antoine De Saint-Exupery (in English AND in French) 98 Hamlet - William Shakespeare 99 Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - Roald Dahl 100 Les Miserables - Victor Hugo Le Petit Prince!
  16. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Nov 18, 2010 -> 04:10 PM) Wisconsin only hasnt made it out of the first round 1 time under Bo Ryan. They have made Sweet Sixteen or better 3 out of the last 9 years. Most teams dont make the Sweet Sixteen 1/3 seasons, Especially not teams that are constantly rated outside of the top 25 to start the season. It would be one thing if they were consistently rated in the top 25, but they are always left. Arne't they usually placed in the 15-20 range though? It seems that way at least. And I dunno, I guess it's just the way they win a lot of their games makes it hard for me to say they are underrated.
  17. QUOTE (kjshoe04 @ Nov 18, 2010 -> 03:43 PM) Yes, the Big East has been close in Final Four teams and I haven't looked at number one seeds myself but the Big East is such a large league and usually gets more teams in the tournament than any other conference that I have to give it to the ACC. But the ACC is so top-heavy. If Duke or UNC is down the whole conference is down. Between UCONN, Syracuse, Georgetown, Nova, Louisville, Pitt, Marquette, WVU you have so many teams that cycle through championship caliber years. Obviously it's a bigger conference so they have more teams to chose from but that shouldnt be used as a reason IMO. And for such a big conference they usually only have 2 or 3 patsies
  18. QUOTE (kjshoe04 @ Nov 18, 2010 -> 03:26 PM) I went and looked at Final Four appearances over the last ten years and the big ten finishes third among conferences. I'll admit they have done better than I thought but the ACC has by far been the best conference. Every year I do hear people claiming it is the year the Big 10 will win the ACC/Big 10 challenge and they have only won it once. It is not you guys either, usually on here everyone is very knowledgeable outside of a few Illinois fans that just feel Kev and I are out to bring them down for whatever reason. I certainly don't cheer for Illinois and granted I enjoy seeing them lose, but I really don't care what they do. I'm much more concerned with MVC teams. How do you figure? Since 2001 (last 10 years) the ACC has 9 final four and the Big East has 8. I havent looked at the 1 seeds but just using memory I'd have to imagine it's awfully close, especially with the 3 out 4 the Big East pulled a couple years ago. And, other than UNC and Duke the ACC has been awfully quiet (Marlyand's NC withstanding). The Big East has been represented by UCONN, Cuse, GTown, Nova, L'ville and WV. Much more strength in the conference. And Badger, it's not as if I think Wisconsin is overrated, I just don't think they are underrated. They are a good program with an excellent coach and they are pretty consistent. But, they have had some pretty bad flameouts in the Tourney and i'll admit some bias, I just absolutely hate the style of ball they (and most of the Big 10) play. It works, yes, but they just never scare me, no matter how good they supposedly are in a year or what they're ranked etc...
  19. Question: Can shotgun be called via a text message the day before a road trip? (i'm driving so it doesnt matter to me)
  20. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 18, 2010 -> 11:53 AM) 5 To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee 6 The Bible 10 Great Expectations - Charles Dickens 14 Complete Works of Shakespeare 18 Catcher in the Rye - JD Salinger 22 The Great Gatsby - F Scott Fitzgerald 24 War and Peace - Leo Tolstoy 28 Grapes of Wrath - John Steinbeck 31 Anna Karenina - Leo Tolstoy 36 The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe - CS Lewis 42 The Da Vinci Code - Dan Brown 43 One Hundred Years of Solitude - Gabriel Garcia Marquez 61 Of Mice and Men - John Steinbeck 65 Count of Monte Cristo - Alexandre Dumas (in French) 73 The Secret Garden - Frances Hodgson Burnett 76 The Inferno - Dante 81 A Christmas Carol - Charles Dickens 88 The Five People You Meet In Heaven - Mitch Albom 89 Adventures of Sherlock Holmes - Sir Arthur Conan Doyle 92 The Little Prince - Antoine De Saint-Exupery (also in French) 97 The Three Musketeers - Alexandre Dumas 98 Hamlet - William Shakespeare 99 Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - Roald Dahl I'm surprised how many from that list i've read
  21. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Nov 18, 2010 -> 11:47 AM) Yeah I liked that HIMYM. I've liked the last two episodes actually. I wonder if there's any possibility that the architecture chick (I forget her name) might have a larger role in the future.
  22. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Nov 18, 2010 -> 11:37 AM) What is odd is that he keeps saying "consistency", well here are the most consistent teams: Current NCAA streaks: Kansas: 21 (1990 - 2010) Duke: 15 (1996 - 2010) Michigan State: 13 (1998 - 2010) Gonzaga, Texas, Wisconsin: 12 As a Wisconsin fan, I constantly see my team underrated. So im not even sure what overrated would mean. The guy who is saying the Big 10 is overrated and inconsistent didnt even mention Wisconsin. That is how underrated they are. Wisconsin is not the team to use as an argument for why the Big Ten is underrated.
  23. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 18, 2010 -> 12:03 AM) http://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/18/sports/b...vestors.html?hp Thought this was very interesting. If I was one of those "dot com" or Facebook multi-millionaires, I would really love to approach the Sox and get involved in something like this...or running a minor league team in one of the five "A" level classifications. I wonder how many more "investors" will pop up in terms of competition and how many will actually make a profit? Having lived in Colombia for one year, the north coast (Cartagena/Baranquilla) would be the other main area that's undertapped...Orlando Cabrera and the Renteria brothers came out of there. Or maybe Panama, with the likes of Mo Rivera and Carlos Lee....probably too much competition already in the D.R. Or maybe even here in China, although I think that would be ultra-complicated with the government. I know the Yankees, Dodgers, Angels, Mariners and Red Sox all have varying degrees of involvement. And I remember a team, I think it was the Pirates, signing a couple of Indian or Pakistani cricket players and attempting to convert them. Anyone know how that experiment is going?
