QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 30, 2009 -> 04:36 PM) You also have to get INTO a college. I actually do not know what the requirements are like to attend a community college nowadays - if just anyone with a HS Diploma or GED can get in? Not sure on that one. If you graduate HS or have a GED you can get into most community colleges. Getting INTO a college based on merit is a whole different thing. Obviously, not anyone can get into Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford etc... but that wasnt the point. Thats like arguing not everyone can make their HS varsity team. If there is not a single college willing to accept you than it's probably because you dont have the raw intelligence to make it in college anyways, or you f***ed up in HS, which is your own fault 99% of the time

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 30, 2009 -> 04:23 PM) Still no. Problem A: money. Loans. Thats what I did, thats what my siblings did/are doing (including grad school). Thats what most of my family did or will do. Also, by starting at a community college you save a lot of money. Or, you could part time it while you work, thats how my brother is paying for grad school right now b/c he is choosing not to take out more loans. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 30, 2009 -> 04:23 PM) Problem B: Some people are working multiple jobs and raising a family, and school is not a realistic option. Part-timing it is always an option. So are online classes. And, if you are trying to raise a family at the general "college age" odds are that it is your own fault or decision you are in that situation where you feel you can not afford to go to college to raise said family. Of course there are exceptions, but it is not the rule. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 30, 2009 -> 04:23 PM) There are others as well. I just dont buy it. If a college degree is something that a person wants badly enough they will find a way to do it. If the desire is there, the option to go is always available

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 30, 2009 -> 12:23 PM) The problem with measuring BA's statistics is they were almost always put up against the most favorable match-ups possible....whereas Mackowiak faced a steadier diet of top pitching. If you want to use that argument, then on the other side of the argument I could say that the lack of any semblance of regular AB's since 2006 definitely has not helped him out any -

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jan 29, 2009 -> 11:08 AM) Who has Gonzaga and Georgetown beaten to deserve that? Georgetown is not going to be in the top 25 next week after losing to Cincy last night. I saw G'Town really take it to Connecticut in Storrs earlier this year and Summers and Monroe played great. I didnt say I thought they could win, but with those two playing well I could see them winning 2 or 3 games. Same with Gonzaga. Obviously they have played porrly at times but they have the talent (Heytvelt, Daye, Pargo, Bouldin) to cause trouble to some teams. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jan 29, 2009 -> 11:08 AM) Same with your second tier of Kansas (who i admit looks decent in a mediocre big 12), Notre Dame (the most overrated team in the country), Florida and ASU. We'll find out more about Clemson once they start playing the big boys of the ACC, Memphis we won't know until the tourney because they play in the worst "major" conference in history. Syracuse just lost to Providence, and their win over notre dame is looking less impressive each game the irish play. I also don't see the hype for Louisville. They beat a good Pitt team at home, but they lost to a team like Minnesota. Louisville has just flat out looked great in the last couple weeks. Also, losing to Minnesota isnt a killer as Minnesota has a decent team at least. Plus, its college hoops, it happens (UNC/BC for example). Samuels is really playing well right now and Sosa has been shooting great. They are athletic and right now could play with anyone in the country IMO. And I only mentioned the unranked teams like Florida, ND and Kansas more to point out that a lot of the teams that are currently ranked just arent really that great. -

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jan 29, 2009 -> 10:04 AM) I disagree, I think they are part of the large top tier of about 10-15 teams that could beat each other at any time. I think the next level is about 20-30 teams that could challenge the top tier given a certain situation. All in all I think about 20 teams in the tourney have a legit chance of winning it all. I dont agree with that large of a top tier My top tier right now is UCONN, Pitt, Oklahoma, UNC, Louisville, Wake Then right behind them I'd place Duke, Texas, Marquette, MSU, Xavier After that I think there is a definite drop off. If you look at some of the ranked teams right now, I think it speaks more to their record then it does to the actual quality of their team. Syracuse, Purdue, Clemson, Butler, Memphis and Illinois I dont think are anything special. Teams like Gonzaga, Georgetown and Arizona State however I do feel like they are capable of making a run. Then there are teams like Florida, Kansas, Notre Dame, Baylor, FSU who are unranked but better than some of the ranked teams IMO (St. Mary's, Washington, Purdue). Basically, saying there are 10-15 teams in the top tier I feel is too many. I would be shocked if no one in my top two tiers I listed wins the Tourney, but i'd be willing to bet a lot it comes from my list of 5 tier 1 teams. But of course there are 20-30 teams who can challenge a top team given the situation, I dont dispute that (look at Ok St the other night) but to do it for 6 games? No. George Mason and Villanova won't show up again for a looong time. -

Looking forward to UCONN being ranked number 1 next week provided they can beat Providence on Saturday. Providence, though, is shockingly 6-2 in the BEAST to start the year. They just dropped 100 on Syracuse last night too. -
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 29, 2009 -> 08:19 AM) The argument over this stimulus bill as good and bad is an exact illustration of what we were discussing earlier - blanket bills are bad. Put yourself in the position of a House Rep, from whatever party and district you are affiliated with. You see this bill, which does some good things, and some bad things. What do you do? If you vote for it, a GOP rival will eat you alive later for having spent such ridiculous sums of money, some of which was utter trash. If you vote against it, a future Dem rival will eat you alive because you chose to let the economy get worse, so that you could make a political point. There is no winner. Its bad legislation, even if its is motivated by an attempt at good deeds. Wouldnt it be great if our elected officials voted how they think and what they feel is best for the people they serve rather than on how to best maintain their position in government? I know it wont ever happen, but it'd be nice

I'm willing to be if you replaced "93 year old vet" with "21 year old college student" who just chose not to pay his electric bill for whatever reason and the same result occurred there would be far less of an outcry. -

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 27, 2009 -> 08:42 PM) I'm going to make a Buffalo Chicken Dip. First, boil chicken breasts (season if you want to with salt and pepper though it doesn't pick up much flavor in the water). While that's boiling, combine 1 part chunky bleu cheese dressing, 1 part cream cheese, and 1 part heavy whipping cream in a sautee pan and mix them together...that should take about 3 minutes. The chicken should be about done by that time...drain it, and from there, shred the chicken and mix in a sizeable amount of Frank's Red Hot (or whatever other buffalo or hot sauce you want to use). Portion that into a porcelain dish of whatever type, and cover all the chicken with the bleu cheese mix. Bake in a 350 degree oven until the bleu cheese spread on top browns, and then cover with shredded cheddar jack cheese. Let that melt and bring out of the oven to cool for like a second. Eat it with chips - I like Doritos but just regular tortilla chips works too. It's so f***ing badassedly good. And if you have fears about the bleu cheese, you can't even taste it, it's just so delicious. Ya i think i'm gonna try making that this Saturday to see how it turns out. It sounds amazing

My house is heated by oil. In the winter every couple weeks an oil truck comes for a delivery and leaves a bill. My driveway is on a hill (only about 1/10 miles but enough that if it is icy you cant make it up without 4 wheel drive. If they cant make it up they leave and attempt to come back later. If I dont pay the oil bill for several months, should they just keep delivering oil to me anyways? Or what if I refuse to plow my driveway? Should i expect them to clear it off for me or deliver the oil some other way? -

QUOTE (Steff @ Jan 28, 2009 -> 02:58 PM) The bill wasn't getting paid so they obviously knew there was a problem. It's below f***ing zero outside. There is no need to cut of ANYONE'S heat in this weather. If they never did that in the future, i guarantee people would take advantage of that -

QUOTE (Texsox @ Jan 28, 2009 -> 02:50 PM) Still for a WWII vet to die in his own home, frozen to death, seems senseless and avoidable. I agree we can't just give people electricity for free, but the utility companies should know who they are cutting off when the weather is this bad. It is not plausible to believe an electric company would/should know the living/housing situations of all of its clients unless the town had like 100 people in it -
QUOTE (Nixon @ Jan 28, 2009 -> 02:38 PM) It'll probably just continue being another 3rd world Caribbean state. Disagree. Early in the 20th century Cuba was a blossoming hot spot for US tourists. Also, I wouldnt call many Caribbean nations 3rd world countries. Haiti and Dominican Republic yes (I was in DR this summer and it was so weird to see) but many smaller islands are doing well for themselves

QUOTE (Texsox @ Jan 28, 2009 -> 02:29 PM) When your electricity goes off, do you think they attached a limiting device on your meter? I doubt I would have checked. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jan 28, 2009 -> 02:28 PM) Also, did the electrical company inform him of what they did? If not, they should have, but it still doesnt make them 100% culpable. Furthermore, wouldnt you think if your power got shut off and it was cold he would have called someone? QUOTE (Texsox @ Jan 28, 2009 -> 02:29 PM) It seems, at a minimum, they should have to contact him and show him how to reset the device. The pictures of his home show snow piled up, I'm not certain he would have been able to reach the device. Agreed QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 28, 2009 -> 02:30 PM) These 2 points argue against each other. I see your point...but vvvvvvv QUOTE (Texsox @ Jan 28, 2009 -> 02:31 PM) It could not be confirmed, but it seems he did not have telephone service. Neighbors did report he would grocery shop on his own. I saw news coverage this morning and the outside of the house appeared neat and orderly and in good repair. Kind of makes it appear that he did realize what was going on around him -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 28, 2009 -> 02:26 PM) That was the point I was trying to make. But if all his family is gone, who exactly is the one who is supposed to be making that decision for him? I dont know but isnt this why we have social services type of programs? And we dont know he didnt have his wits about him. Also, not having children doesnt mean he didnt have nephews/nieces in the area. We just dont know. Also, did the electrical company inform him of what they did? If not, they should have, but it still doesnt make them 100% culpable. Furthermore, wouldnt you think if your power got shut off and it was cold he would have called someone? -
