  3. QUOTE(Texsox @ Aug 9, 2007 -> 02:55 PM) And nothing changes if the radio station starts playing obscure stuff. They are still showing the hubris to decide what I will like. No matter who does the programming for you, you will be unhappy. You want control of what you listen to. That's just not true. I've heard many a great band thanks to college radio and college programming. Though I never listen anymore, it is due to my living way out of range for many stations.

    QUOTE(knightni @ Aug 9, 2007 -> 12:53 PM) QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Aug 9, 2007 -> 09:19 AM) Haha, you're on. And I just saw The Prestige last night--wow. I figured out what was going on pretty early in the movie, but still, what a mind trip. Check this out then. Did that say "Copywrite 1990"?
  5. Well, that's why I started my 'zine. It's a way for me to do what I can for the bands I really enjoy. There are many perks to it, and many pitfalls. Tex, I'm not pointing fingers at the public so much as at the industry. I don't expect my wife to spend hours at a time on the 'net looking for music. I hope the people who are supposed to be in charge of finding the music actually spread the music. There are people who make a living finding these bands, the problem is the radio world doesn't let the DJ think for themselves anymore. They days of "payola" are supposed to be dead, but they're more alive than ever before, it's just that the big labels are the only ones controlling it. I used to hate cover bands. Then I started seeing cover bands I actually do enjoy. Ones like the one you mentioned. The ones I don't like are the ones who only are playing to make the money. I love the ones that are doing covers of the music they love. One of my buddies is in a Metal cover band, and they sell BIG. They do covers though that nobody else is doing, and the ones that they love. A band like you mentioned obviously loves the "Classic Rock" thing.
  6. QUOTE(RibbieRubarb @ Aug 9, 2007 -> 07:01 AM) Both Conan O'Brien and Craig Ferguson has the exact same joke about Barry Bonds last night: That he celebrated number 756 by injecting Champagne into his ass! Expect to see Mencia doing it next week.
  7. QUOTE(Texsox @ Aug 8, 2007 -> 11:31 PM) I guess I'm too delicate . . . I'm saying that in the eyes of the companies. I believe that most of the world would eat up stuff by these bands if given the opportunity to hear them. But the industries chose to make the stuff safe instead of giving people the rebellion of Rock. Look at what has happened to Punk. For crying out loud you can get "Punk" bands on Kids Bop!!! First time I saw Avril Levine told me all I needed to know with "Punk Fashion", as she stood there in her video with the sleeves on her arms. You know, a t-shirt but with a long sleeve shirts sleeves cut off and being worn by themselves? Oh you know, the type of thing Johnny Thunders used to wear to cover the track marks. Gosh, ya know, I hope I'm not coming across as one of those internet psychos who obsess about meaningless crap. I don't sit here and stew about this stuff all day.
  8. QUOTE(GoSox05 @ Aug 8, 2007 -> 04:09 PM) For those that are into Chicago punk music. There's a documentary coming out about the history of chicago punk. Here's the link to the myspace page. http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fusea...iendid=59071932 Thanks for that link!!!
  9. QUOTE(sox4lifeinPA @ Aug 8, 2007 -> 03:28 PM) so what's some good country I should be listening to? Chet Atkins.
  10. It's not so much the random public that gets my ire up, but more like the radio stations and record labels. It used to be that a radio station would give you the opportunity to hear something new that isn't a major. I don't know, I don't care to come across as a snob, as I am far from it. You can ask anybody and they will probably tell you that I don't get on a high horse about my music compared to yours or somebody elses. In all honesty a band like Jet piss me off more than a Britney Spears does. Jet walks in the world of Rock and Roll, but they sanitize it to a disgusting degree, but the press and radios proclaim them the next BIG THING in RnR, when in reality there are thousands of bands that can poop all over them. But since they are so A-B-C in their execution, the majors lap them up and spit them back out on the public because a band like (for instance) Riverboat Gamblers or Kansas City f**gots are too much for the delicate public to handle. Though those bands are exactly what RnR is all about. But Britney and her kind? I have no idea, it ain't my "cup of tea" so I don't spew my stupid opinion about it because I would be wrong and I have no real idea of what I am talking about. Same reason why I will never engage in a discussion about Rap or Hip Hop. It's a world I know nothing about.
  11. QUOTE(The Critic @ Aug 8, 2007 -> 10:38 AM) (But for all you eye-rollers out there, I prepare my check before I get to the register, so all I have to fill in is the amount. That takes about as long as swiping the check card, so LAY OFF!!!!!) No me. I make sure the check is completely blank and then fill it out with the wrong hand...while I'm drunk. Then when the cashier tells me I have to re-do it, I make sure to make a scene.
  12. HA!!! I'm only giving you sh*t because I can. I have actually laid off the beer BIGTIME and really don't experiment at all. Enjoy The Beast some day. Ya want to pay me back? Check out one of the bands I feature in my 'zine and buy their disc. I would recommend Willie Phoenix for you and his Quick N Dirty CD. He's a great guy, and his stuff rocks. www.williephoenix.com Tell him I sent you his way and he will be super cool to you. Oh, but you will have to say "Carl from Sonic Ruin", as he doesn't know me as Kid Gleason. Heh.
  13. QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Aug 7, 2007 -> 10:45 PM) Tru Dat But weren't you the guy who posted the home recipe for doing slow-cooked Italian beef brisket with gardinare peppers a year or so ago?? Yup. Doesn't mean I love the stuff. I have only done that recipe once since then. I posted because all of my Italian Beef freak friends were raving about it, and I figured some here might like it. I'm a nice guy. I even share my beer.
  14. QUOTE(Texsox @ Aug 7, 2007 -> 10:37 PM) Misty water colored memories? Weird. I never went to college, except for a year and a half of community college. Why? I was delusional and chose to spend all my time with my band, Misty Beethoven.
  15. QUOTE(juddling @ Aug 7, 2007 -> 01:15 PM) Boy...I'd really hate to be Batboy's press agent right now!!!!!!!!! All of you with avatars like that need to put names under the avatars. How the heck am I supposed to do a search with no names?
  16. QUOTE(MHizzle85 @ Aug 7, 2007 -> 10:10 PM) It's all about the italian beef. I'm not an Italian Beef fan at all, but I do love those beef and cheddar croissant things. It's the croissant and cheddar though.
  17. I have no idea why I clicked on this topic.
  18. QUOTE(Brian @ Aug 7, 2007 -> 09:38 PM) Their cheese fries rule! Beef and Cheddar Croissant.
  19. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 7, 2007 -> 06:27 PM) Why does anyone who is under 50 still write checks? Because I got cool ones with the Marvel Superheroes on them. Duh.
  20. Yeah, but you plan to rectify that on September 1st...right? Just got off the phone with The Failures. Great guys. I screwed up the interview though. Sigh. After a great one with Kelly, this one went crappy in a way.
  21. QUOTE(The Critic @ Aug 7, 2007 -> 12:22 PM) The outdoor festivals are not my thing at all. Even stuff like Summerfest, which is mostly free bands, I try to avoid. If I only wanted to see two bands, they'd be playing at the same time on opposite ends of the field/lot/park/whatever. The last one I tried was the Warped Tour, when it happened at the United Center's parking lot. YIKES. All day, on blacktop, in July, in 90+ degree heat.......never again. Give me a dark, coldish dumpy club, two or three bands appearing on the same stage, a couple cold alcoholic beverages, and THAT's how I like(d) to see shows. Yeah! Like all the shows you've met me at!!! Oh... ...wait...
  22. QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Aug 7, 2007 -> 11:42 AM) Anyone go to Lolla this year? My neighbor went on sunday. Descriptions of the day leave me wondering why the heck people go to those things.
  23. Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with the Pop acts that the people actually do like. I just think that most of Pop becomes Pop due to pure laziness on the publics part. People don't want to actually search out music that they might like. The industry then hands the people a very generic and bland form of another band. I think what offends me the most though is when I open up a CD by some major act and I look at the writing credits. Pretty much every single song is written by somebody else. I'm not saying than the artist, I'm talking each song has a different writer, and none of the people actually PLAY on the album. My wife though, she loves Pop and radio stuff. She is exactly the person I am talking about. She doesn't want to go to the trouble of finding something else out there. She turns on her radio, and away she goes. She lets the programers pick who she likes. She's happy with that. Me? I don't like the drumming in Pop, nor the lack of cool guitar fills, nor the missing adlibs or vocal bits. She used to think I was ripping on HER when I would have bad things to say about the radio/MTV. I told her I didn't really care what she liked. What made me mad was seeing so many bands being created by labels now. They've always been there, but it seems more prevelant now (at the time, not so much nowdays). But I told her in all reality, as long as she loved MUSIC, that's really all I cared about. As for a voice the public likes, I always respected Barry Manilow, even when it was cool to hate him. I also never understood attacking people like Rob Thomas. He plays Pop because he has said he grew up listening to Pop, it's what he loves. If you love Pop, then that is cool. I have a problem with people who dumb stuff down.
  24. QUOTE(Texsox @ Aug 7, 2007 -> 12:36 AM) LOL And they are from Villa Park. I believe this is the first #1 for a local Chicago band in a very long time. So while they may suck, they will be wsucking while living in nice homes Yeah, well welcome to Billboard Top 100. Find me one act that doesn't fit that bill of sucking but living in nice homes on that list.
