QUOTE(SoxHawk1980 @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 08:29 PM) Did you actually watch Sox games this season? Until September, Guillen routinely used Cotts as the #1 lefty in high leverage situations. That is just a fact, and it is a fact that was complained about on this forum on a daily basis. Thanks! Aardsma is worse than Riske, with a track record to prove it. Look at Aardsma's stats. Look at the fact that he has a good, but not great fastball and no decent second pitch. And show me even one source that says the throw in Vazquez is even a decent prospect. Please stop with the pointless stance. To compare a 24 year old Aardsma to 30 year old David Riske (who the Sox and every other team in the Majors) made a whipping boy is absurd. Aardsma has good stuff and got better as the year went on last year. (In the final month of the season when he recorded a 1.65 ERA in 16 1/3 innings, including a stretch of 12 scoreless innings from Sept. 2-19.)

For those bashing Aardsma... I wonder how many have actually watched the kid pitch. I have liked David Aardsma ever since I first saw him as the closer for the Rice Owls. Aardsma is a good pitcher who really started to come around at the end of last year. From Whitesox.com: Aardsma showed steady improvement with each time up at the Major League level, and he posted a 2-0 mark with a 3.12 ERA after the All-Star break. He was even more impressive in the final month of the season when he recorded a 1.65 ERA in 16 1/3 innings, including a stretch of 12 scoreless innings from Sept. 2-19. When will people learn to trust in the objectives of KW and his staff.

Orioles Close to Signing Jamie Walker
JDsDirtySox replied to JDsDirtySox's topic in The Diamond Club
I understand that Walked is about to get a hefty raise... but if he does sign with the Orioles, the Sox will be left with options of Alan Embree, Darren Oliver, Steve Kline, or a rejuvenated Neal Cotts. Please Come Back 2005 Cotts -
The Orioles are close to signing Jamie Walker to a three-year contract worth at least $10 million. Walker is 35 and he's never made more than $1.25 million in a season, so it's hard to blame him for cashing in, though he is picking a team with little chance of going to the playoffs over the duration of his contract. It's another misguided move for the Orioles, but it's not like it's going to take away from what they can offer other players. It's not the lack of funds that keeps them from getting big names; it's that most star-quality players can find teams more likely to contend. Source: FOXSports.com

I think all of this is just silly. We as fans should realize more than anyone else what being a fan is all about. MB is a Cardinal Fan... get over it. He works/plays for the White Sox, and will do so until the White Sox don't want him anymore. In a very similar situation, my brother holds a pretty good position with a National League Ball Club. They sign his paychecks, but they still aren't his favorite team.

Is is just me, or does Ryan Sweeney look much more comfortable at the plate than Brian Anderson does? I am not saying Sweeney is God (not yet anyways), but everytime he comes up to bat he looks relaxed and takes good swings. Anderson has had nearly 400 ABs and still looks lost for weeks at a time. Its easy to tell that Ozzie loves Ryan Sweeney, but does anyone else think BA is going to have a hard time getting out of the doghouse?

For me its the Phillies and Aaron Rowand, or the Padres and Geoff Blum. Never Forget Geoff Blum!

QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 23, 2006 -> 01:45 PM) Brian Anderson is just a terrible hitter. I don't blame Ozzie for wanting to upgrade in CF for next year. Ya know... I completely agree. I am as much of a homer as anyone on here, but Brian Anderson is not going to cut it for us. He has played a complete season now, and is still awful. By the end of the season, he should be showing signs of life. I am all for signing a veteran CF. p.s.: Someone needs to tell Anderson how awful he looks when he holds his form after swinging and missing. I have seen it way too much. how about the stat Fox put up on Crede. Since Sept. 3rd, Joe is batting .135, no HRs, 3 RBI, and 1 extra base hit. I love Joe, and will not bash him... but I do think this shows he has some major back problems.

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 11:33 PM) Eh, not happening. Grady Sizemore is just a special player. I completely agree. But like I am saying... we were simply talking about what type of hitter we think Sweeney could become. I acknowledged that he doesn't have Grady's speed, and the defense isn't comparable either... I am simply talking about the approach at the plate. A high average Gap hitter with above average power.
-
QUOTE(Kalapse @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 11:35 PM) Grady Sizemore is currently the best leadoff hitter in baseball, bar none and well on his way to an amazing career. That's far too much to be asking of Anderson. I wasn't talking about Anderson... my conversation with Fathom was about what type of hitter we see Ryan Sweeney as in the future.
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 11:30 PM) Yeah, I expect he'll hit more homers than he did in the minors. However, I don't think he'll become this monster power hitter all of a sudden. Especially in the post-2004 era, 35 or 40 homers isn't as frequent as it used to be. I expect Sweeney to be more of a spray hitter like Casey...and hopefully not a slap hitter like S. Burroughs. I would love to seem him be a Grady Sizemore like hitter. I know he doesn't have Sizemore's speed, but I think his plate discipline could be very comparable.
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 11:24 PM) It's easy to tell....this isn't rocket science. And yes, I consider Freel and Brian Roberts to be speedsters. Look at Anderson's career stats that were just posted. 30-40 stats just isn't realistic. That's like saying Sweeney will hopefully become a 35-40 homer hitter. Anderson's calling card in the majors should be his great CF defense. I think it would be great to have a cheap, great defensive option patrolling CF at the Cell for years to come. I'd much rather Anderson focus on becoming a better hitter at the plate instead of becoming a stolen base threat. I completely disagree. A players game can drastically change over the years. Heck we are talking about two young twenties players. I won't be surprised at all to see Ryan Sweeney develop a power stroke.
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 11:13 PM) Who thinks Anderson is the fastest on the team? He might be the most graceful runner on the team, but Ozuna is far and away our fastest player. There are 14 guys in the majors with 30 or more steals right now, and everyone of them is a speedster (except maybe Pods, but that's another story). Every single guy on that list is significantly faster than Anderson. I don't have his career minor league stats, but since when have we projected him to be a 30-40 stolen base guy? I don't think its absurd to ask Anderson to learn the art of the stolen base. I would like to think he could be like an Abreu, Beltran, Damon, etc in saying he could get 20-30 steals a year. 30-40 may be a stretch, but I do see what Ozzie is saying here... Not saying I completely agree with it, but I do understand it.

You know its going bad for you when you hit behind Brian Anderson.
