5/24 Sox vs. Orioles & Umps 6:40PM CT
nrockway replied to DoUEvenShift's topic in 2024 Season in Review
Mental things that can’t be quantified. I wish they’d stop trying to “predict” sports, that’s part of the magic to me. Even weather conditions, I doubt that’s baked in. I assume it’s just “what has this hitter done in the past on this count” which is a meaningful data point, but the average fan doesn’t need to be told that a 0-2 count is not a desirable count to be in. And I don’t think those data are very useful at predicting the future. Personally, I would’ve thought the Sox would be better this year because of the “predicted” WARs of the guys on the team based on past production. A lot of posters predicted Benintendi would be dreadful this year, I disagreed because the data said he’d regress to the mean, but they were right. -

I like when people attempt to turn quality into quantity, it's a worthy feat. Helps us to understand the world around us. It's usually wrong or misleading though, I don't get along with numbers that mislead and masquerade as objective. Also I think it's a funny bit that I'll run into the ground. -

I love to complain and I hate Apple. Why do they put that stupid probability thing at the bottom? I get how they came up with the figure, but it's never accurate. Does it account for the probability that the pitcher's mind is a million miles away and he throws a hanging slider because he's not focused? No, because you can't measure that, and the hitter doesn't have a 24% chance of getting a hit in that specific instance, he has an incalculable chance. common sense might help, you might assume what could happen when the count is 0-2 or 3-0 or whatever. why do they have to put an exact figure on things that you can't actually quantify? dumb. appeals to a certain type of baseball fan though, the pseudo-mathematician. -
That was worst of all. It's one thing to be terrible at your job, it's another thing to get totally fucked over by the fascist umpire and say "please sir may I have another". I guess that's a nice departure from his typical post-game comments where he impersonates the world's worst motivational speaker.

we already got a guy like that, Duke Ellington or something.

partially correct, but players have more control over BABIP than is commonly thought. It's not just dumb luck, he's putting balls into play that are easy to field. Weak groundballs and pop-ups are "balls in play" but it's not bad luck when they turn into an out, it's bad hitting. His peripheral stats are better than last year and he shouldn't be quite this bad, so that's true. He also should've kept his overpaid mouth shut, bad luck isn't preventing him from making diving attempts on balls in the outfield.

In basketball, they often talk about players working back by scrimmaging. Then they might go to the Gatorade League or come off the bench or have a minutes restriction because there isn't a minor league system to rehab in. Seems like a flaw of the NBA to not develop a proper minor league system actually, there's enough basketball talent, not a flaw that the MLB has that. I don't really know what happens in the NFL, but they play 16 (17?) games and not 162, they don't really have the same luxury of time. They also play once a week and not daily. They also don't really seem like models to follow when it comes to injury recovery, frankly. Also, your claim that basketball players "get right back to playing" is just dumb. they take every other game off, occasionally entire seasons. Anyway, this thread rocks. I came to post how it seems like Luis is about 96% recovered, after the home run it might be about 97.5%.

I think actually Henderson interfered with Vaughn on the play and every runner should have advanced. Vaughn did what every baserunner would do in that situation, casually walk back to second base, Henderson ran directly into him instead of directly to the ball. I think that's the baseball equivalent of a flop and Moron Jr. fell for it. Drawing contact will now be a useful skill for middle infielders when bozo and crew are officiating.

This umpire has been really bad for a while but this is the most blatantly bad call I've ever seen. Move over Angel Hernandez, there's a new whipping boy. His name's Junior and he's funny looking too. as far as the game, my takeaway is that the Orioles need bullpen help and should trade for Kopech.

5/22 - 6:07pm - White Sox ( suck ) vs Toronto Maple Leafs
nrockway replied to hi8is's topic in 2024 Season in Review
well in Japan, they have this concept of mukoyōshi where a wealthy businessman with no male heirs will adopt an adult male to take his surname, take over his business, and also marry to his daughter for some reason. It also happens in cases where all the male heirs are worthless (Michael, the other one). Are we ruling out the possibility that Reinsdorf literally adopted Getz? Maybe in lieu of offering his daughter's hand in marriage, he gave him a job. there's your nepotism and a plausible explanation for how he got the job in the first place. oh look we lost 9-2. something tells me AA is gonna be the main show for a while. -
welp, Vera is gone. Money well spent. https://x.com/francysromeroFR/status/1793113740130549920 https://www.milb.com/winston-salem/transactions Drohan takes his place.

White Sox To Add Nick Nastrini To Rotation
nrockway replied to KipWellsFan's topic in Pale Hose Talk
keep pushing Clev back, he'll fall backwards of a cliff eventually. -
I don't know if Colas isn't getting a shot because he's a headcase (which he seems to be), it probably has more to do with the fact that he regressed and will almost certainly make a mess of things if he gets called up. DeLoach hasn't exactly been good either, but might as well see what they got. I think DeLoach was the predictable ILoy call up, it might've been Oscar if he was actually hitting the ball. They should send down Vaughn next, then maybe we see Oscar.

I think he meant our complex but I dunno why Boston would compound their mistake of signing a lousy left fielder to too much money by trading for an even worse left fielder who makes too much money. That would be awesome, I'd encourage them to do it, I just don't know why they would.

I'd want to see Shuster, might as well try to get the most out of the Bummer trade ?! Although, Soroka was throwing his fastball a couple MPH faster out of the bullpen, right? Did he keep that up through 4 innings? If he can sit 95, Soroka might be an OK 5th starter. Flexen did that for one start, touching 97, then came back to Earth.

Julks recalled, Mendick back, Ramos to DL, Shewmake to Charlotte
nrockway replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Shewmake was just....bad. I'm disappointed, I thought he might show that he's at least a useful utility player. The bat is one thing but his fielding is also way worse than I expected. Remillard is straight up better than him, which is not saying much, but there's worse AAAA fodder. He's trying to be too cute with the baserunning lately but I think that's a top down initiative: take the risk for an extra base (though who knows what the hell happened at third base today). I think that's dumb baseball personally, but I guess this team has to manufacture runs in any way it can. BTW, Remillard's compiled 0.5 WAR and is sitting at .867 OPS through 8 games while playing above average defense. That's about the best you could ask for for a AAA player who gets called up every so often due to injury. I'm a fan, plus I like his batting stance. -
I don't think it makes that much sense for position players outside of catchers and maybe CF/SS. They already do it with starting pitchers, it's called a 5 man rotation. Maybe, if anything, you give a guy two days off in a row occasionally and it's good for his morale. Making millions of dollars or not playing a ball game, everybody likes a weekend.

hey are we still mad about the Julks trade
-
Well, do you think it's gonna stay like that? Judge was under .700 OPS less than a month ago, now he's close to 1.000. It does change fast, like caulfield said. Burger has a 2 home run game and where does that put his OPS? Clearly Burger is a better player than .500 OPS. Watching him play prior to the injury, I think he's actually improved his game. Of course, I was happy with trading him and this is one of the reasons why. He's a very good hitter but I imagine you don't hit too good when you're constantly in pain. My back is starting to hurt on a semi regular basis and I don't hit too good either, in this way me and Burger are brothers.
-
Is Edwin Diaz cooked? They gave him $100mil to miss an entire season due to an injury he sustained celebrating an exhibition game victory, now he's pitching to a 5.5 ERA and giving up like 100 homers a game. He has a blown save in 4 of his last 6 outings. He just gave up 4 runs to 1 out against the Marlins. It's funny to me when bad things happen to Steve Cohen even though I kinda like the Mets. They seem to think they're making the playoffs this year, maybe they want to sell their farm for Kopech and Fedde.
-
He's looked pretty good to my eye even if the ERA doesn't match up. I still think it's a fine trade even if Burger returns to form and Eder never becomes anything. Take a risk on top end talent, Burger, an oft-injured DH, wasn't leading this team anywhere. Look how well that's worked out for the Marlins, they could use some young arms. I think it would be hilarious if we traded back for him. Eloy replacement/Ramos sub. I'd be hesitant to swap Wilfred Veras for him, but that should get it done. I think the Cubs might actually be interested in him if he starts hitting the ball again.

That’s awesome, kudos ?

They should make Keller pitch all 9 innings

Robert mentioned as trade target for Mariners by Passan
nrockway replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
To play him in a corner? Probably a good idea. Luis is a better defensive center fielder than Rodriguez IMO but he can't stay healthy. Less wear and tear in the corner. Pretty good trading partner for the Sox but I would think it takes at least Young, Emerson and a third player.
