Burger still had value last trade deadline due to his HR power. Yet, we got a pitcher for him who can’t even maintain an ERA under 5 in the minors.

The bigger question is why do the Sox let front office guys they are about to fire dictate their trade deadline moves? Kenny traded Burger for Eder last trade deadline and then Kenny was fired three weeks later. Mike Tosar recommended Miguel Vargas and then Tosar was fired a week after the trade deadline. Sure seems a bit strange to me.

I think the posters that say trading Burger wasn’t the huge mistake due to his age, lack of a position, and the Sox new timeline to be good again have a good argument, but trading him with Eder being the return looks to be a huge whiff now. Unless Eder turns into something, which doesn’t look likely right now with how awful he has been in the minors, this trade was a bust. It sure looks like the Marlins robbed the Sox so far. I’m not sure how this can even be debated.

Burger isn’t a free agent until 2029. The Marlins have four more years of control on him after this season.

No, and not even because he can’t stay healthy. Eloy is at -0.3 WAR. I would be surprised if the Orioles pick up his $16.5 million dollar option. He will likely be a free agent. Meanwhile, Burger is earning $760K with 4 more years of control.

Going for star caliber guys was never an option with JR (see Harper and Machado) so I don’t think it can be ruled out as not being the correct strategy. We have simply never seen it done. Signing the over-the-hill gang has been the Sox strategy for years, and next offseason will be no different.
