Nah, we need position players closer to 20 than 30.

2025 Old Sock Drawer
One of Getz’s two good offseason acquisitions, along with Fedde. Better than nothing, even though the trade return for them was meh. DeJong ensuring himself another contract and gig for next year is impressive.

2024 MiLB Catch All
I’m tripping balls looking at caufield’s post. Anyone else think Quero should be ranked higher than Montgomery at this point? .400 OBP as a catcher that hits for average and power?

2024 MiLB Catch All
Yes!!! I got ripped for saying the Sox should claim the guy since he was DFA a couple times and sucked in the minors this year. But I guess he won’t cost a 40-man roster spot now. Either way, he was pretty good before this year and is still somewhat young. He’s actually 8 months younger than Zach DeLoach. Worth a try.

No, he does. However, he still ends up outperforming Eloy and Moncada with his bat.

The problem is that Eloy and Moncada continue to get reinjured. Moncada is still out. Eloy came back but hasn’t put up numbers as good as Burger’s since 2022. He also hasn’t hit a home run since May 14th — either an issue with his groundball swing or nagging injuries? Not sure, but the Sox did bring him back too early and you could tell he was still hobbled by his hammy.

Jake Burger trade
I think someone may have mentioned it already, but Burger was dealing with a nagging strained left oblique injury since April 15th that was probably the main cause for his slumping bat. https://www.mlb.com/news/jake-burger-has-left-oblique-injury

Jake Burger trade
Yep, great point. I think they keep Burger now because he turned it around. But like the Marlins and Rays always have to do, I sure wouldn’t be surprised to see them deal him within the next two years. They will try to sell high on him with 2+ years of control left.

Fedde/Pham/$ to STL, Kopech to LAD, Miguel Vargas + prospects to Sox
Why wouldn’t it be a bad thing? Serious question.

Jake Burger trade
Only 3 of the 9 players the Marlins traded seem to fit what you said and I think they chose those 3 guys for a reason. A fourth outfielder that they won’t miss because he’s not good, along with two relievers that they sold high on, knowing that relievers had a ton of value for this year’s trade deadline, yet are fickle performers from year to year. Those guys aren’t exactly the same as an .800 OPS, 35 HR power hitter earning peanuts for the next 4 years. That kind of power is tough to come by for a low payroll team like the Marlins. They obviously can’t easily afford to sign a player with that type of power on the free agent market.

I only see three players that the Marlins traded that fit what you are saying — De La Cruz, who is just a mediocre fourth outfielder, and Brazoban and Hoeing. It looks like they sold high on Brazoban and Hoeing due to their first half performances and the fact that relievers had a ton of value this trade deadline. Marlins Trade Subtractions: CL Tanner Scott — Impending FA: $5.4M this year CF/2B Jazz Chisholm Jr. — 2 more years of control; $2.63M this year 1B/DH Josh Bell — Impending FA; $16.5M this year OF Bryan De La Cruz — 3 more years of control; $768K this year LHP Trevor Rogers — 2 more years of control; $1.53M this year LHP A.J. Puk — 2 more years of control; $1.8M this year RHP Huascar Brazoban — 4 more years of control; $753K this year RHP JT Chargois — 1 more year of control; $1.29M this year RHP Bryan Hoeing — 4 more years of control; $751K this year

I don’t know about this. Power is expensive and the Marlins still have 4 more years of control over Burger. He hasn’t gotten expensive yet (only cost them $740K this year). I’m sure, just like the Rays, the Marlins will be trading Burger once his arbitration years get expensive but he’s not quite there yet.

Regarding #1, the rumored story behind the Burger trade was a ridiculous one. The rumor I remember was that Hahn wanted to deal Tim Anderson to the Marlins but only Kenny, and not Hahn, was allowed to make trades with the Marlins (per Jerry’s rules) due to his close relationship with GM Kim Ng. Hahn wanted to keep Burger but Kenny didn’t like him as a player and dealt him to the Marlins for Eder after finalizing the trade directly with Ng, without Hahn being involved at all.

Jake Burger trade
Agreed with everything here. The biggest problem with the Burger trade looks to be similar to the Fedde trade, and even the Mena trade, thus far. The Sox didn’t trade three decently valuable trade assets into a sure-fire return that will help the rebuild. Hopefully, Eder, Vargas, and Fletcher start performing…

I agree that Burger would’ve likely been at 3B with Moncada out, and other than a bad glove there, why would that have been so bad in a horrible losing season? The Sox defense was terrible anyways as well.

Jake Burger trade
I agree with the timeline problem with Burger but what DH’s did the Sox have that could put up an .800 OPS like Burger? Eloy could barely do it or stay healthy and he would’ve been gone anyways due to his expensive contract. Burger would’ve been starting last year, this year, and for the next few years for the Sox, no doubt.

I doubt Tony thinks that was a good trade either. Getz choked on that one.

Compiled list of Chris Getz GM failures
NBC Sports is now clowning the Getz and the Sox on this trade… “Jake McCarthy went 3-for-5 and knocked in two runs, including the game-winner in the bottom of the ninth, to propel the Diamondbacks to a 4-3 win over the Rockies on Tuesday. This is getting a little ridiculous now. McCarthy, who spent most of last year looking like one of the league’s easiest outs, is hitting .311/.380/.438 in 325 plate appearances. The White Sox reportedly could have acquired McCarthy in the Cristian Mena deal last winter and chose Dominic Fletcher instead. Fletcher, in case you were wondering, is currently hitting .216/.283/.268 in the majors.”

Finally some good news…second consecutive year, Sox win Bobby Murcer award, MLB’s most generous/charitable
I always remembered Christine O’Reilly as the White Sox charities director that Hawk would interview and ogle over during broadcasts back in the day. Is she somehow related to Score goon Shane Riordan?

The Sox got back cash considerations for Cousins. But to Jerry, that’s probably winning the trade regardless of what Cousins does going forward. ?

Burger still had value last trade deadline due to his HR power. Yet, we got a pitcher for him who can’t even maintain an ERA under 5 in the minors.

Jake Burger trade
The bigger question is why do the Sox let front office guys they are about to fire dictate their trade deadline moves? Kenny traded Burger for Eder last trade deadline and then Kenny was fired three weeks later. Mike Tosar recommended Miguel Vargas and then Tosar was fired a week after the trade deadline. Sure seems a bit strange to me.

They just signed him 2.5 years ago. Is Paddy pulling a Dave Wilder or what?

Jake Burger trade
I think the posters that say trading Burger wasn’t the huge mistake due to his age, lack of a position, and the Sox new timeline to be good again have a good argument, but trading him with Eder being the return looks to be a huge whiff now. Unless Eder turns into something, which doesn’t look likely right now with how awful he has been in the minors, this trade was a bust. It sure looks like the Marlins robbed the Sox so far. I’m not sure how this can even be debated.
