We now know it wasn’t literally Acuna or nothing, just like @Kyyle23 stated. Vientos was an option over Acuna. I won’t guarantee this because I obviously have no proof but this would indicate that Getz more than likely had other trade offers for Robert as well since he took over as GM. I also wouldn’t be surprised if there was a better offer than Acuna and Pauley that Getz passed on. So if Getz knew he was starting another rebuild, why not trade Robert after his stellar 2023 season? I guess it doesn’t really matter now.

Thanks for bringing this back and showing that WE was incorrect in his assumption. If anyone would know the inside details on this trade, it would be Jon Heyman. He is Boras’s mouthpiece and Boras is Robert’s agent. It also shows that Acuna was not their first choice, which some people had previously thought.

He could have just called his homers “Mune Shots”, rather than coming up with this lame nickname — “And that’s another Mune Shot for Murakami!” It would definitely be wittier than a played out Japanese reference. Obviously, it is a legitimate historical reference to Japan but it’s just too much of a stereotype these days. It would be like if we had a Chinese player named Kim and Schriffen called him “Kung Fu Kim”. It’s a bit in poor taste to overgeneralize one historical fact and apply it to anyone of that ethnicity, as if it’s all they are known for. It’s definitely a pretty cringeworthy nickname and I would hope Schriffen checked with Murakami through his translator to see if he was okay with it at the very least.

I never knew this. Thanks for sharing, tray. Make no mistake, I can obviously see how this is offensive and wouldn’t fly today. But I’ll be honest, I am part Italian and I would laugh my ass off if I heard this these days. I am also picturing TLR running to home plate like this as Drysdale says it… My dad is the Italian side of my family and I am going to ask him about Drysdale saying this to see if he remembers.
