It’s a backup catcher so defense is the priority. I believe it was hinted at that the Sox preferred McGuire’s defensive game over Lee’s. Venable was Boston’s bench coach when the White Sox traded McGuire to the Red Sox in 2022. But I seem to remember Lee having a good throwing arm so that may have helped against the 7 stolen base game.
