  1. there is a fine line in which a dress code can be stated. before it was "facial hair trim and properly groomed", now it appears as this is a fade and how far can the owners make a suggestion of clean shaven but yet a mustache is ok. i just don't know if anything can be done about it, but ride the fade out.
  2. QUOTE (CWSpalehoseCWS @ Feb 26, 2015 -> 01:55 AM) Trying so hard to curb my expectations for Crain, but man is it exciting to think what he could provide if healthy... Replacing a guy like Cleto with Crain would be huge. the sox just keeps getting pen arms. as i said earlier, this team is going to have a hell of a pen.
  3. QUOTE (fathom @ Feb 25, 2015 -> 10:17 PM) Ken RosenthalVerified account ‏@Ken_Rosenthal Asked a baseball executive if Hamilton’s discipline was for PEDs. His response: “Worse.” The executive declined to elaborate. didn't he once had a drug problem??? worse than PED? ~~~ edit, if it was or is about drugs, i think they can void his contract, if the team wants to. that is if this is all about drugs.
  4. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Feb 25, 2015 -> 11:31 PM) I can't believe he comments here about Beckham. By golly geez don't you read the off season stories. We will win 162 games this season judging by all the positive feel good stuff I have been reading. Where have you folks been??? for me, i will explain my response. with what the sox have now both in the minors and on the 40 man team, if someone doesn't pan out, Beckham is there. the team have used Beckham starting and only last season decided to cut bait with him. there are no better options and the sox FO are not going to make a trade. the only other way would have been the FA route, but talking about spending money, causes problems. so unless a waiver prospects comes up, and better than what the sox have now in camp, this is the best. might as well make the best of it.
  5. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Feb 25, 2015 -> 04:51 PM) http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2015/02/d-ba...n-contract.html Diamondbacks the latest to sign a bigger tv deal...putting them in the low $90's just for their regional sports network Based on this number, the Mariners' new deal (started in 2014)...and where the D-Backs franchise is at the moment, the White Sox have to be shooting for $140-180 million per season in 2019, not taking into consideration their revenues from the national baseball contract as well as MLB Media. the increased revenue won’t vault the D-Backs into the division-rival Dodgers’ financial stratosphere. The Dodgers’ TV deal averages out to roughly $334MM annually, according to a Forbes report from March 2014, trailing only the Yankees, whose annual revenue from the YES Network averages out to about $385MM. Recent examples of this type of mega-contract include the Rangers, Mariners and Phillies, each of whom have AAVs in excess of $140MM, per Forbes. Piecoro notes that since the Rangers signed their 20-year, $1.7 billion deal in 2010, nearly a third of the teams in the league have inked similar contracts. Per Forbes, the previous top 10 television revenues belonged to the Yankees, Dodgers, Phillies (20 years, $2.5 billion), Rangers, Angels, Mariners, Mets, Red Sox, Giants and Padres. with all this money being mention, doesn't it seems as the sox should be getting more?? when i first read about the money, i was trying to figure out why so wasn't it more money. the northsiders are sharing the csn network with the sox. what other regional pro baseball will compete??? the $$$$ doesn't add up.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 25, 2015 -> 06:18 PM) Dan Hayes ‏@CSNHayes 12m12 minutes ago Rick Hahn said in Nov. Melky Cabrera wasn't sure about #WhiteSox. Samardzija/Robertson/wife convinced him. http://bit.ly/1DbbXTY those are the intangibles that i like to hear.
  7. QUOTE (bmags @ Feb 25, 2015 -> 08:29 PM) I guess short of a Brad Penny zombie ace season, Crain coming back is the most exciting of the flyers to me. what will be his role?? when do you think he can make it back?? to tell you the truth, the pen is looking in being the strongest part of this coming season.
  8. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 25, 2015 -> 08:19 PM) Scott Merkin ‏@scottmerkin 39m39 minutes ago Ken Williams called Vince Coleman's talk this morning the best he ever heard on base running. Coleman extremely passionate on the topic Avi Garcia, Micah Johnson, Tim Anderson, J.B. Shuck, Adam Eaton, Melky Cabrera, Alexei Ramirez and Emilio Bonifacio part of session i am really excited of this part of sox baseball improving. but my concerns is, if the leadoff hitter is really not a base stealer, wouldn't he do more harm by trying to steal and getting caught. i mean the #2,3,4 hitter that the sox will field, wouldn't it be better to have him on base than getting caught? i mean, anyone who played ball know it is an inherent, natural talent that one has, and not learned. thoughts???
  9. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Feb 25, 2015 -> 08:08 PM) This is approximately the worst case scenario. You can't rule it out, because if both Sanchez and Johnson look absolutely terrible in the spring, I think there's an outside chance at this. If this happened, it would be a very bad thing. very much true. but in some way, having Beckman waiting in the wings, does somehow soften that blow,
  10. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Feb 25, 2015 -> 07:53 PM) Assuming half the league is wrong about them both being relievers. Which I hope, but none of us know. 8-12 million bucks buys you a reclamation project like Brett Anderson. i will hate to mention this, but it is needed. it all comes back down to the sox owner's group and the FO to make that decisions. no matter how much it makes sense to us the fans.
  11. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Feb 25, 2015 -> 08:16 PM) Or we can just plug Montas or Danish into the equation... If all else fails, there's always going to be a slew of pitchers in that $8-12 million per year category who could slot in at 4 behind Sale/Quintana/Rodon and ahead of Danks. and for as teams keeps adding and subtracting players, other players may become avail
  12. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Feb 25, 2015 -> 08:04 PM) Nope. Doesn't seem like a difference-maker, will have to outbid several big spenders for a guy who is likely league-average. Let's use our young depth here to save some resources for next year when we'll have to replace a starter. very good and very true.
  13. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Feb 25, 2015 -> 08:01 PM) It's one thing if Johnson or Sanchez give you a 650ish OPS. It's quite another to be below .600. To say we have capable options at 2B is really pushing it. We have options, but that's the same thing as saying we have options at catcher, too. They're just not the best of options. One thing that's for certain, it's going to be a lot easier to improve 2B than C or 3B. With that said, sure, they can and probably will be able to wait until mid-season and target the Chase Utley's of the world. As far as operating like a fantasy baseball team, I don't think anyone has mentioned adding to the payroll in the last 4-5 years without talking about budgetary constraints, lowered attendance and revenues, waiting for the new media rights deal, etc. Also, middle infield positions are critical to a team's success, especially from a defense standpoint. That's why it will likely end up being Sanchez or Beckham. If Gillaspie, Flowers and Garcia all hit, then they can carry Sanchez's bat. But how likely is that? At the very least, I'd run it by Abreu and see what his opinion is on the guy. He's certainly familiar with Olivera from his time in Cuba. never thought you had it in you to make a great post / point. i am truly impressed.
  14. QUOTE (BrianAnderson @ Feb 25, 2015 -> 07:47 PM) Meh. Pass. The Sox aren't the Yankees, Dodgers and Red Sox. We don't have unlimited payroll that we can just say, eh, whatever if it doesn't pan out. Also a total of 2 stolen bases over his past 3 years. Why is it that we on this board like to operate the Sox as a fantasy baseball team? Second base is one of the least important positions I have concern for. Spend 10mm on this guy? No thanks. We have capable options at 2b. As long as my guy at 2b can hit .260, get on base, steal a few, and play a solid glove/turn DP's -- Fine by me. Save the money to spend on pitching. i see that this discussion can be as informational as some in the past several days. i would like to point out, getting his player is not the kind to go and spend an abundance of money on, but to reasonable make a bid of his service with a reasonable amount. now if other teams want to overspend, then it up to them and not for the sox to go crazy. this board of menbers, mod and admin's have never allow the, as you called it, the fantasy baseball, sure we discuss options but we as fans do not know or have privy to inside information in which we can discuss sox baseball. yeah some and i am just as guilty or more guilty than others to suggest players and point out why with reasons to make this move or that. but enuf of my rant. peace
  15. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Feb 25, 2015 -> 06:10 PM) Iguchi had just turned 30 the winter before the 2005 season began. But three years are really all that they need. And I hope they get at least three years, because Melky Cabrera will be 33 at the end of his deal as well...and we don't know exactly how much damage or how long of a duration he took PED's. Granted, Cabrera has a track record to fall back on. Another option would be to swing a deal for Alex Guerrero of the Dodgers...since Howie Kendrick and Dee Gordon are blocking him. And they could probably get at least $10 million shaved off the remainder of his contract. that and keep on scouring the waiver list. this will continue to rebuild the system
  16. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Feb 25, 2015 -> 06:48 PM) Hector Olivera isn't a prospect in the traditional sense though, only in the sense that he's never played in the majors. He turns 30 just after the start of the season. You'll be lucky to get 3 good years out of him. If you sign Olivera, you are signing him to be the starting 2B. you are correct in every way, but i guess i am thinking about having prospects / bodies / players to compete. to get the best player and hopefully the other as backup. the farm system is still rebuilding, this should help.
  17. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 25, 2015 -> 06:38 PM) From a practical standpoint, Olivera makes a lot more sense than Moncada. If they spend $60 million on him, they will actually get $60 million worth of him, not worrying about still paying future salaries, taxes, or lost picks/signings. It would also strengthen one of our weakest spots on the field. any way to add to the list of prospects is in my opinion needed. the minors are a little thin in the infield positions. i think the sox has a couple outfielders prospects, but the systems needs infielders. either way, the sox needs more prospects and let the future settle itself out.
  18. i would love the idea of the sox opening on the road or in a dome of some sorts. start the season on fri, and the first weekend series. like this the home team will have the fans there on the weekend. will help in the attendance. also start the season a week later than normal. edit ~~~ i still think the season is several weeks too long.
  19. QUOTE (rowand's rowdies @ Feb 24, 2015 -> 06:16 PM) Yep, bad move Bhawks, nice capitalizing on it NY Islanders. Good for Nick Leddy getting the time and respect he deserves. We could have kept Leddy and shipped out/cut Oduya & Rozy. Let TVR, young kids learn in the 5-7 spots. Even if Leddy was going to walk & we couldn't afford him, we could have shipped him out at the deadline for depth. We could have also traded Bickell and Sharp to clear room. Keith, Seabrook, Hammer, Leddy should have been the 1-4 Dmen on this team through it's championship window. BHawks really screwed the pooch on this one. let me ask this question, do you really think Bickell has any value where a team will give up prospects or even a pick for him?? leddy, i was never that high on him. made a lot of defensive mistakes for wanting to jump in the offense. just my opinion.
  20. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Feb 24, 2015 -> 06:18 PM) http://www.baseballamerica.com/college/135463/ More HS prospects to keep eye on. i like the idea of that hs'er who is hurt and miss the entire yr, i think that is what it said. keep his name around and see if he is there in the later rounds.
  21. last yr was an all screw up yr except for the emergence of Jose A, eaton, conor and of course sale and Q. trying to use last yr to project this yr is, for me, kind of hard to do. there was a lot of doubt in a lot of things and in the talent. this spring, and looking into the season, i am looking at danks and hector with fresh eyes and no opinion formed. i will let them separate themselves from the naysayers and those who have a negative outlook. i believe most on this board are looking in the positive way towards them. come toward the end of spring, i wonder who will emerge as the #4 and 5 pitchers.
  22. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Feb 24, 2015 -> 05:08 PM) I don't know the stats, but it seemed like when he did start, it was Danks starts last season. When he was good, he was real good, and when he was bad, he was real bad. considering he is a yr + from surgery, that is good. he will build on it. like someone said earlier, he has a bulldog mentality. i am incline to hope that he will continue to improve.
  23. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Feb 24, 2015 -> 04:56 PM) I agree. I think if you asked most of us, Noesi definitely passed the "eye test" last season and should be the favorite to win the #5 spot in the rotation. from how the sox acquired him, anything he does is pure gravy.... he has proven to be given an honest chance straight from spring training. so in essence, i agree with you.
  24. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Feb 24, 2015 -> 04:50 PM) Right. No question the top three are great, but this is one of the main reasons that the projections/skeptics are further down on the Sox' chances than we want them to be. Most teams get significant innings out of about 8 starters each season, and our top 8 include Danks, Noesi, Brad Penny, Erik Johnson, and like Scott Carroll or something. Certainly we have high hopes for Rodon and he could be difference maker, but he's a still a prospect. excellent, and that is the main unasked question, can those 4-5 + pitchers can put it together, it will really be a very exciting team. then Rodon development, and some of the prospects waiting to make a name for them selves, will add to that excitement. on a side note, do you really think Penny has anything left???
