  1. QUOTE (Frank_Thomas35 @ Dec 15, 2015 -> 08:50 PM) I agree with this. I would love to have both Abreu and Cespedes not only in our lineup but both as spokespeople when they go to Cuba. Cespedes is a hitter and brings a plus glove to our outfield. He also doesn't cost a pick and has played and been successful in the AL. I'll take either him or Upton obviously but the more I think about it the more I like Signing Cespedes and if we had the money Murphy. Otherwise an addition of Cespedes and another IF would go a long way to making us in the conversation as competitors. and i know i will shoot myself in the dang foot, but hades, i would even sign alexei to a nice team deal for yr. i still like his hitting, even thou his avg last yr wasn't too good.
  2. QUOTE (Alexeihyeess @ Dec 15, 2015 -> 08:34 PM) You don't even need WAR to know Cespedes is the better player. The A's were a force with Cespedes and the instant he left they immediately turned into a mediocre team. Then he went to Detroit (his stay with Boston was meaningless) where he fueled their torrid start and kept them in playoff contention right up until they traded him. Then Cespedes pushed the Mets over the Nationals and led that team to the league lead in 2nd half offense. Cespedes = wins. nice background work.
  3. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Dec 15, 2015 -> 08:07 PM) I'm thinking the Freese scenario is most likely. Sign Freese and Cespedes, keep draft picks and prospects. that will work much better and that could be a good 2nd option.
  4. if the sox does sign a big bat, whomever it is, does anyone think they will continue on players acquisitions. a 3b... a dh??? maybe a pitcher???
  5. QUOTE (BrianAnderson @ Dec 15, 2015 -> 06:57 PM) This may be completely false, but it does seem like many of Cuban players seem to age better than other players FWIW. And again, maybe I am just thinking of a few examples in my own head and I'm wrong. Not saying this is justification to giving Cespedes a long, big contract. But again, with no draft pick. I'd do $110 over 5 years for him. Mind you the biggest contract the Sox have ever given was to Abreu ... and that was for like half of that. Hard to see JR signing of on such a big deal when the team is constructed how it currently is.... i think i would like it. if this was a done deal, i think it is a win - win situation. the sox will have a nice bat in ref to the complete hit tools. when the sox goes to cuba, they will have a base of players who many cubans can relate to, and the new pr and media news, coming from that front, as well all merchandising that will open there. popularity growth.
  6. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 15, 2015 -> 07:39 PM) I thought the same thing. Pay extra for real estate and taxes to live within a walkable distance to amazing schools from Pre-K up. over all, that idea is a nice dream.... i believe they called it the american dream. but that was a long time ago. now, and i mean no disrespect to parents, parents will have to take more of pro-active role in their children. that is if they can, if not, then they will need to find a place who can at least protect your children's. today, even in a remote area of no major crime life or gang life, CO. there was something that happen in school .... this was like plus or minus 3 weeks. chi again is leading the nation for, how do not know the numerical number of consecutive years, that violence will get to the school. believe me, school is a ripe area for recruitment.
  7. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Dec 15, 2015 -> 06:28 PM) Your point was whether he got lucky in that he never traded away good players. I argued he wasn't lucky. The discussion wasn't about whether he drafted well. We all know the Sox org has sucked from a player development perspective. That really isn't much of a debate. but before that player development, they will need the players. whether if it is thru drafting or now int't signings. btw, how big was that int'l scheme in those 10 yrs of kw
  8. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Dec 15, 2015 -> 06:01 PM) You know...the guy was GM for 10+ years. Hard for me to say he just got lucky that he never traded away a star. The players the Sox kept tended to be the ones who ended up being better (obviously pitchers). and in those 10 yrs, that gm screw up the system that it is still trying to fix. in those 10 ys, they really never really drafted, back to back, rnd to rnd player who is worth anything to write about. and in those 10 yrs, those player did not get any better, thereby proving my point, he did not draft worth a damn
  9. QUOTE (Jose Paniagua @ Dec 15, 2015 -> 06:48 PM) Not in this CIN rumor, specifically......but if there ever were one point in the Yes Column for trading Rodon-- it's that his current contract will likely be his last with the Sox, since Boras will push him to free agency as much as he can (that is, if he isnt mediocre or worse). that is part b of 3 parts that i have as a defense of trading rodon. yes, the ability to a. bring him more in the rtn, b. knowing full well that the sox and any other org will not be able to sign him to an extension. and c, this if the chance is there, the sox can reap the most in the main rtn. i hate to say this, but part of baseball is a business.
  10. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Dec 15, 2015 -> 06:41 PM) The thing about Kenny is outside of Gio (and maybe I'm forgetting someone else), he really rarely ever gave up a player who ever amounted to much anything. In many cases, you could make a point that when he sold his assets, he sold high. Olivo and Gio probably had the best careers out of that and Kenny did good when he sold Gio the first time (and when he got him back), but obviously failed when he moved him for Swisher. That was probably the worst trade in Kenny's history, which is pretty incredible given how many trades he actually made (and it isn't like Nick Swisher is a bum, yes he turned out not to be a fit and had a lousy year with the Sox but he's had a good career). and you made a good point. here is another way to look at it. in those trade, even the other team some what believed that they were getting a quality player and that player failed to develop any further. so the point is was it kw superior knowledge in the future or did he get lucky there. second, the state of the system was even then horrible.
  11. QUOTE (raBBit @ Dec 15, 2015 -> 06:37 PM) You're disagreeing with my point LDF. I am just saying it's only up from here for Rodon. Not saying they should trade him next year or in two years, but it would be a far better scenario than the one now. ok i am still with you, but i am a little lost. i do not want to trade rodon for the sake of trading him. and only will if the other team pays the ransom to get him. that is whether it is now, next yr or later. now, there is no choice for the club but to trade someone and no one is exempt. imo
  12. QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Dec 15, 2015 -> 06:37 PM) Why? Unless the Sox get something absolutely amazing for him, there's no need to make a trade involving him now. exactly, there is no reason to even trade him unless they pay the price. last week some person, whom i will not say, jump on me for wanting to trade him. my only respond then is as it is now, pay the price and not only will they get an extremely talented sp but 6 yr at a great cost before his FA's.
  13. QUOTE (raBBit @ Dec 15, 2015 -> 06:21 PM) They talked Quintana in a greater deal that Frazier was a part of and that didn't happen. Anderson they're unwilling to move for Frazier. Levine reported the Reds wanted Fulmer too but I never heard that first hand. I think Rodon is the least tradable player on the team - and that's not to be confused with best player. Rodon hasn't reached his peak value. There's literally no reason to be move him because he will ultimately, barring injury, be far more valuable next year at this time. Hahn over and over again - "The only untouchable player for Jerry Reinsdorf is number 23." and therein is my point of, if the pkg is there, i would be willing to trade rodon.
  14. QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Dec 15, 2015 -> 05:56 PM) There is no way Rodon or Q are being moved for someone that doesn't have 4 or more years of control, and is an impact bat. In reality, Rodon is probably untouchable. The fact that CIN even went there is comical. But I am glad to see Hahn sticking to his guns on Anderson and Fulmer (more reasonable asks, but still not guys I am moving for a 2 years of Frazier). you are darn right, if this was kw regime, the trade would have been done.
  15. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 15, 2015 -> 04:12 PM) 1) Doesn't take into account ticket subsidies that kick in at lower attendance levels. 2) Doesn't fully consider opportunity cost of lost Samardzija pick and loss of talent for Frazier...as well as impact of being forced to trade two of Sanchez, Saladino and Micah when Lawrie is pushed to 2b. Doesn't consider possibility of those traded players being a part of core in 2016-2021. Or replacing Cabrera, Lawrie and Frazier after 2017, as well as a new catcher before that season. 3) Doesn't fully consider injury possibilities with Melky, Frazier, Avila, Lawrie, Eaton, Sale, Q, Rodon and Abreu. 4) Doesn't consider higher revenue sharing percentages that strongly benefit teams like the Marlins...the flipside possibility of being even more profitable with a teardown. 5) Should also include something about impact on 2019-2020 media rights negotiations...although a teardown now could also lead to very competitive teams in 2018 and 2019 depending on the maximized talent/trade acquisitions being made. you make a good point, but remember, no one outside their acct will know the whole financial numbers. this also includes forbe's who in my opinion comes the closest. this past yr, researching the profit and lost of a baseball org, it all depends on who they will massage the numbers. whether they want to include all in 1 particular calendar yr or will they go with the baseball fiscal yr. also all the other money that is made by other sub companies. that is why these corp acct makes huge money, to find the loop holes that the baseball org can exploit, legally.
  16. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Dec 15, 2015 -> 04:19 PM) What's with all of this not posting stuff. Everyone has an opinion which makes the board interesting. exactly .... and as i used to say on wsi and then later on this board a long time ago. with everyone having an opinion, based on that, everyone is right and everyone is wrong, as long posters don't take it personal.
  17. QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Dec 15, 2015 -> 04:13 PM) LOL!x2 ok i am game..... i must really be dumb this morning b/c you are the second one who did the LOL. what am i missing. explain this to me as i am .......... i will let you fill in the rest.
  18. QUOTE (SouthSideSale @ Dec 15, 2015 -> 03:57 PM) Whelp this thread took a trip to Weirdville... ok i am interested, why???
  19. QUOTE (Saufley @ Dec 15, 2015 -> 03:35 PM) Scrubs unveil Heyward. Good day to sign Upton!! dang, i really tried to ignore this post, but i will answer... i am soo weak willed. i would not like the signing of upton at this time or ever. now to give some reasonable reason, i can\t. i just do not like him as a player and i think he comes with baggage. again this is my opinion. but i will give a month of not posting if they, the sox makes some great trade and fa signing.
  20. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 15, 2015 -> 03:51 PM) If the Sox did trade for Frazier and had Saladino play SS, Alexei's buyout + Frazier's 2016 salary + Saladino's salary ref alexei, i can see how or why the sox would want to sign him. but not at the market rate but lower. his hit tools are still really good vs his k's. yes his avg was lacking.
  21. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Dec 15, 2015 -> 03:40 PM) Again, this is all predicated on Melky regressing toward his career averages. you make an really good rebuttal there, but you are missing the whole picture. there is no telling on who will performed as maybe they should, the team needs to address the holes and hope for the best. the only problem is they do not have a viable backup and that is what i am and continue to harp about. get bodies and hope for the best,
  22. QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Dec 15, 2015 -> 03:37 PM) Then they won't be trading with the White Sox, and likely will be holding those three while they lose 90-100 games the next two years. yes you got that right, and that is all that i care about. but someone will pay price that cincy wants.
  23. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Dec 15, 2015 -> 03:33 PM) The NL has 8 teams (Giants, Dodgers, DBacks, Cubs, Pirates, Cardinals, Mets, Nationals) battling for 5 spots. The AL isn't like that right now. and you got and made an excellent point.
  24. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 15, 2015 -> 03:22 PM) QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 14, 2015 -> 03:14 PM) * If you can't add, as much as it pains me, then you must take advantage of said prices and subtract. They had a plan which supposedly included Samardzija. What were they going to pay him with if they have no money? It isn't like they are $20 million short of their projected revenues. If they are, they are crazy. based on yesterday events on this site, i was really trying to stay out of any controversial, topics. however i see a minor little error in, not only yours and many other posters belief of last yr game plan. granted last yr game was accepted and agreed upon but the sox org and by default the entire FO approval. but i still think last yr stink of KW and the owners rush to make the playoff. now i know no one will able to prove it.... not ever. that is why i am saying that this yr game plan is a different one and will need to see it in its completion.
  25. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 15, 2015 -> 03:59 PM) Why? i don't know, i keep seeing team of the past who invest in heavily in top fa's only not to have success in the playoff. the main advantage of getting the missing pieces, the sox can have control of how to address the holes by deciding which will be the best course of action. lastly, i just hate to break the bank on 1 fa and having to find ways to fix the team.
