Your brushes with greatness
Probably the biggest was Jimmy Carter and Rosalyn--that was really amazing. I also got to talk with bell hooks--she's a big hero of mine so that was really cool. John Mahoney outside the Steppenwolf. J. Dennis Hastert went to my old church before he got super high up and my fam knows his. I've also met him at more than a few area functions. And some Senator from Iowa I think is name is Harkins or something like that--he was dull so I don't remember too much. And I saw a Wild game a few seats down from MN governor Tim Pawlenty and his lovely wife. And I had a brief introduction to Paul Wellstone before his really untimely passing. I think those are all the big ones.

Soxtalk Book Club
I know there's another thread out there on this topic but I couldn't find it--once again Technology outwits me. So, what is everyone reading this summer? I just finished Tender is the Night by F. Scott Fitzgerald--I didn't care for The Great Gatsby, but TITN just really struck a cord with me. A real emotional tour de force. I'm thinking of starting Crime and Punishment--has anyone read it? Worth the endeavor. Until I decide I'm sticking with my Agatha Christies and Kierkegaard. Oh, did I mention I'm a huge dork? Pushes oversized glasses up nose.

Vogue--I love it, the chicken does Madonna. He preens too! Hahaha--true animal behavior right here folks. Must be a rooster, though, 'cause he doesn't cuddle...

By not trading, the sox show fans to fuck off
Our current roster wouldn't be that bad if they would rejoin the land of the living. Williams has done plenty--and I'm not sure we want to mortgage our future anymore than what's already done.

CD Recommendation Thread
Just picked up Nellie McKay's debut double cd. I love it. A very interesting range of songs and styles. Weird the first time you listen to it but better each time. I also got India.Arie's Acoustic sould (belated b-day gift) and that is a good cd too. Totally chill and affirming. Both are highly recommended.

Bloomsday Centennial
I can never make it through either. That and Anna Karenina are the two books I can never finish. The Dubliners is good--and it's nice that it's short stories. More manageable.

Student Loans
As one who just graduated (huzzah!)--remember: $3,000 a year might not sound like much--but you'll be borrowing that much PER YEAR. Oh, it adds up. Keep that in mind. Don't plan on having nice things for a looooooong time. And if you can try to get subsidized--I have those so no interest will acrue during my deferment (nor while I was in school).

Computer Geeks at it again.
13.80671% - Geekish Tendencies I love how many digits it goes out. I was surprised by my score. I always thought I was more geeky than that. If it wasn't for my love of Trivial pursuit I would be much lower--come on, it's a good game!

Or what it really means: more bands ripping off bands that are ripping off Pearl Jam. I can hardly wait to turn on my radio. :puke

Papa Tony's
Mmmmm, one of the things I miss most from Chicago--the pizza. Giordanos, Lou Malnotis, Ach'N'Lou--soon I will be home to you. My friends up here call me a pizza snob because there will be no Dominos, Bill's/Basil's, or Pizza Hut for me.

Rationing oil usage
Because America's oh so amazing Public Transoportation system makes it feasible for everyone to take that to work, the store, etc...

Tuesday Night Fights!
I've gone to Twins/Sox games at the Rollerdome nearly every time they have played each other for the past 4 years. I wear a Sox shirt and sometimes a hat and cheer for the Sox. I have NEVER been really seriously messed with (a few drunken comments, Go back to Chicago comments and stupid stuff like that). I agree it's pointless to wear NL gear to an AL game--but why tarnish our reputation further by fighting with those nimrods? They're only doing it for attention just like any other simple minded idiot so don't give them the satisfaction...

OLD MAN BIRTHDAY THREAD
Happy birthday Jim! Enjoy that beer tonight!

Good grief..
Fair point--I would say alcohol is by far the most prominent "Date Rape" drug out there. But for college aged kids about 84% of them are assaulted by their someone they know--so I don't know if that really helps the stranger danger idealogy.

Happy Birthday!
Thank you had very nice birthday. Got to be with friends and alcohol. Good combination. Goodnight.

Happy Birthday!
Quite well--but I'll be doing much better tonight around 10 (and probably much worse around 2)... Thank you all for the very kind birthday wishes! This day just keeps getting better--now let's hope the Sox give me a b-day win! Thanks again you guys!

15 Kids?!?!
Ouch, ouch, ouch. (and that was just thinking about how much it's going to cost to send them all to college... ) PS The husband's name is Jim Bob. Ark. Family Marks Birth of 15th Child FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Michelle Duggar's family says that the mother is all smiles after delivering her 15th child. Both the baby and mother were doing well, although Michelle was feeling some discomfort because the birth was her second by Caesarean section, said father and former state legislator Jim Bob Duggar's mother, Mary Duggar. "She's a trooper. She's just all smiles," Mary Duggar said in a telephone interview Monday. The baby boy, Jackson Levi Duggar, was born at 10:52 a.m. Sunday. He weighed 7 pounds 8 ounces and is 20 inches long. "She was wanting to do it naturally," Mary Duggar said. But the delivery was by C-section because one of Jackson's shoulders was presenting first. "I call him Jumping Jack because he would go in a circle," she said. Home briefly from the hospital later Monday, Jim Bob, 38, sounded a bit tired but happy. He said his wife and new son were doing fine. He said he leaves the decision up to Michelle on whether to have more children. "I have always left it up to Michelle because she's actually the one that carries them and does all the labor," he said. "But we both love children. Even yesterday, she said she would like to have some more." Michelle, 37, probably will be in Washington Regional Medical Center for three or four days, said her mother-in-law, who is taking care of the 14 other children. Michelle, who home schools her children and is helping to build the family's new home in Tontitown from the ground up, started having her babies when she was 21, four years after she and Jim Bob married. He is a real estate businessman and a former state representative. Their children include two sets of twins, and the parents have stuck to the letter "J" for their names. There is Joshua, 16; Jana and John-David, 14; Jill, 13; Jessa, 11; Jinger, 10; Joseph, 9; Josiah, 7; Joy-Anna, 6; Jeremiah and Jedidiah, 5; Jason, 4; James, 2; and Justin, 1.
