  1. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Feb 17, 2017 -> 02:23 PM) why Utah? I don't have a child yet, but I started a 529 Plan through Vanguard so technically the Nevada state plan. I think it's a great idea. Tax free growth if used for educational purposes and when I have a child, I can make him or her the beneficiary rather than me.
  2. QUOTE (fathom @ Feb 13, 2017 -> 04:06 PM) Two different trades died at the ownership approval level (other team's) according to Hahn. Have to guess it was Q and Robertson http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/02/whit...p;post-id=85363 Interesting that they died at the ownership level of the other team. I can only believe it had to do with money? Nats' ownership did not want to pay entire Robertson contract and perhaps Pirates could not take back all of Q's money?
  3. QUOTE (hi8is @ Jan 29, 2017 -> 04:17 AM) Michael Kopech won a "who can take the most selfies" contest at Soxfest yesterday... in a short interview after winning he thanked God and Jesus for his win. Not joking. I think he did it in jest. That was my interpretation from watching the clip.
  4. QUOTE (Con te Giolito @ Jan 23, 2017 -> 11:02 PM) It is absolutely obvious at this point. Denying this requires more of a suspension of disbelief than the other way around. The day of the Eaton trade, Hahn very bluntly stated he would love to "do five more of these" over the next five days, implying he would love to trade Q, Melky, Frazier, Robertson and perhaps Jones if the right deal came along. He would not have said this if it weren't true. Otherwise, why would you tell several of your players (and he did not need to name them for everyone to know who he was talking about) that we want to trade you? The right deals have simply not come along.
  5. QUOTE (Brian @ Jan 17, 2017 -> 08:54 AM) I'm thinking of upgrading gyms. The one I go to now is cheap and a pain to go to after I get off work and walk the dog, so I only go on weekends, which feels pointless. This other big one if right outside my subdivision and I know I would go 4 or 5 times a day, but maybe a tad expensive. How much does everyone pay for their memberships? I'm thinking I would be willing to pay $80 a month but this place maybe higher. Just under $100 at the Lake Shore Fitness Club by the Loop. I work out usually right after work and shower before heading home. The showers are clean and the crowds are not huge.
  6. QUOTE (steveno89 @ Jan 18, 2017 -> 04:30 PM) In watching this I am not sure I am as high on Kopech as I was before. This is him during the AFL this past fall. He does strike out Ian Happ twice, but seems to really struggle to get his fastball and slider over the plate. Several wild pitches, and the catcher throws out two runners at second on stolen bases. Explosive fastball 70-75 grade, fringe plus slider 50-55 grade, 40 grade control in my eyes He's a really risky prospect, but the Sox tend to develop pitchers pretty well Not to demean your scouting eye, but this was one performance in the Arizona Fall League. That is way too small a sample size to conclude anything of significance.
  7. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jan 16, 2017 -> 03:34 PM) I couldn't agree more. Always respected both immensely, despite wanting to beat them. Agreed. I think Rodgers has a very good argument for the best ever despite the lack of rings.
  8. QUOTE (oldsox @ Jan 9, 2017 -> 07:01 AM) Let me gets this straight......Astros value Archer over Q, correct? Yes. Probably a combination of Archer's stuff being superior and an extra year of control.
  9. QUOTE (southside hitman @ Jan 3, 2017 -> 09:27 AM) http://www.minorleagueball.com/2017/1/2/14...grade-breakdown Grade A: One Grade A-: One Grade B+: Four Any guesses to who these six are? A = Moncada A-= Giolito B+ = Kopech, Lopez, Collins and Fulmer
  10. QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Jan 1, 2017 -> 01:54 PM) I see. So Rick or any GMs are only allowed to make trades that value players using BA rankings. Rick: We don't like Glasnow Hutch: Neither do we, that's why we want Quintana Rick: Exactly so give us Meadows. Hutch: But Glasnow is top 10. You're getting fair value. Rick: Yea but he sucks. Hutch: So? Top 10. It's fair. Rick: Yea but he looks timid out there, MLB players lit him up AND he has no control. Hutch: That's why we don't want him Rick: Then why do you think you can get Quintana for him? Hutch: Look at his prospect ranking. Fair value. You're not allowed to disagree. Message board rules Rick: Silly me. I always forget. (1) It's not just BA's rankings. (2) These scouting services' rankings are based talking to scouts and coaches in the various leagues. (3) I never said a deal had to be made using prospect rankings. My only point is that a consensus top-10 prospect in all of baseball is not a third piece.
  11. QUOTE (Con te Giolito @ Jan 1, 2017 -> 11:58 AM) Bell and Keller as headliners would he fine by me. Not as sure about Bell and Glasnow leading a deal, but I'd still probably take that as well as long as the Pirates weren't to resist much on the low ranked guys the Sox scouts have identified or the Pirates tossed in Newman. Glasnow has a lot of baggage with that walk rate. It hasn't gone down much at all in all his years in their system and if he cannot correct it it puts his ceiling as a high leverage reliever. If you want to compare hypothetical Pirates returns with the Sale haul I would seriously put Glasnow closer to Basabe value-wise than I would Kopech. Unless the Sox see a magic fix Glasnow is more of a third piece than he is a headliner. It sucks because Meadows, Keller, Bell and Newman are all guys I want and they have a lot of interesting depth pieces the Sox could pick through as well. Bell and Meadows are both clear headliners for me and Keller is not far off from those two. Newman is a step back but from those 3 but he's about as solid a 2nd piece as I would expect coming back. If I had any faith in Glasnow at all a Newman + Glasnow deal would have a lot of appeal by itself. A consensus top-10 prospect in baseball is a third piece?
  12. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Dec 22, 2016 -> 04:11 PM) Watch list: Atlanta Stranger Things Westworld (only got 3 episodes deep before) Narcos S2 Recently watched: You're the Worst (I think Brian rec'd that one? Whomever did thank you!) Rick and Morty (Binged it all again) Justified (rewatch, honestly one of my favorite shows of all time) Rome (feel like this show got forgotten but was sooo good) Excellent excellent show. Watched all episodes over two working day days. Currently watching The Wire, but hard to binge because it's pretty heavy. Watched the first season of the Americans and was not enamored by it. Do seasons two and on get better?
  13. QUOTE (ptatc @ Dec 28, 2016 -> 10:08 AM) Doesn't change at all for me. I really don't get tied to players. I've been going to Sox games since the late 70's. I got season tickets (weekend) in the early 2000's when I could afford them. I will continue to go while players come and go until I retire to Colorado when i will probably get rockies tickets. It's obviously fun to watch them win but I will go regardless as I enjoy baseball games. Got it. Was actually just curious.
  14. QUOTE (steveno89 @ Dec 27, 2016 -> 10:03 AM) We did not "fleece" anyone, agreed. Both the Red Sox and Nationals were able to improve their mlb roster substantially without subtracting from the 2017 lineup. That always has to be considered a sensible move. I love the term "fleece" for trades when absolutely no one has any idea what any of the prospects will do or even Sale/Eaton over the next few years. Granted, I understand that an analysis of a trade is boring when you say "check back in five years," but the reality is that, no one knows today who won the deal. "Sensible" is a good word to use because ya the move made sense for the Red Sox as a team in the win-now mindset.
  15. QUOTE (ptatc @ Dec 28, 2016 -> 09:54 AM) This still has nothing to do with enjoying a baseball game unless your enjoyment is tied to winning. So how does your enjoyment of watching a baseball game change with this Sox team versus past? It is just seeing players like Sale, Eaton or Q?
  16. QUOTE (ptatc @ Dec 28, 2016 -> 09:39 AM) I guess i can see that. But again your enjoyment is tied to eventual winning. i enjoy going to watch baseball. But the thing is there is almost nothing they could do this offseason to win this year. They just don't have the resources to sign someone to a huge deal nor do they have the prospects to make such a move. It would be piecemeal additions, which has consistently failed over and over for this organization.
  17. QUOTE (ptatc @ Dec 28, 2016 -> 09:30 AM) this goes back to my constant discussion of "are you a baseball fan." Or are you a fan of winning? Can you enjoy a baseball game if your team loses? Yes, if the losing is purposeful. Now that line is sometimes difficult to see. But clearly since 2009, the Sox were trying to win and losing. This year (and the next), it is clear the Sox are trying to lose. "Mired in mediocrity" is the worst position to be in, IMO.
  18. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 28, 2016 -> 09:23 AM) Intentionally losing is the worst position of all. I disagree. If you aren't a playoff contender, purposeful losing is the best route.
  19. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Dec 27, 2016 -> 08:18 AM) Eat some of(hell eat the whole damn thing) and just bring back a serious haul. Absolutely. No time to be cheap. Hopefully this sparks Pirates to include Meadows as the chief piece. But I love the Yankees position player prospects.
  20. QUOTE (Brian @ Dec 12, 2016 -> 06:14 AM) So you have a router separate from your modem? If so, ditch it. To much speed lost. I went with a Motorola modem with built in router, because it's compatible with Comcast. Used to have a nexgear router years ago and hated it. Always had to reboot and no range. Yea, separate. I will look into the dual technology. Thanks!
  21. I am looking to buy a new router for my one-bedroom, 800-square foot apartment. My current router sucks, and our 50 mbps internet barely cracks above 10 mbps on wireless. Can anyone recommend a good router for my situation? I don't need the router to do anything fancy except get me the best wireless speeds. Looking to stay ideally in the $150 range.
  22. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Dec 5, 2016 -> 08:35 PM) The funny thing is the Rosenthal/Heyman reports are clearly direct Sox leaks to induce bidding so either Garfein has a very truthful, lower level source or a bad one. That's quite plausible.
  23. QUOTE (Knuckles @ Dec 5, 2016 -> 08:29 PM) Garfien: deal not close. I like Chuck, but Rosenthal is the best in the business.
  24. QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 5, 2016 -> 07:36 PM) Josh is great and the twitter rant was warranted. Sox front office has not deserved benefit of doubt and the incoherence of a their actions means we put more importance on their words. The new CBA, which caused the delay of most MLB movement, was signed a few days ago. The Winter Meetings have just begun. It's way too early to freak out about inaction. I agree whole heartedly that the FO does not have the benefit of the doubt, but the key stretch of the MLB offseason has barely begun.
