  1. Why do people think that Machado would sign an extension here? He knows literally nothing of this organization beyond perhaps some of its players. It seems extremely unlikely that he would forsake his golden free agency to sign an extension with an organization to which he is brand new. This would be a one-rental player, albeit with a chance to make an impact on him going into his free agency, in a year in which the Sox will still not be contenders.
  2. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 14, 2017 -> 09:29 AM) Is Castillo really Machado's best friend? I do know Ozzie and his sons do know Machado from Miami. So they could have a little more info about his intentions. But this is a guy who is going to get paid at least top 4 of all time. Money talks. Why would he go this far and not test the open market? ^^
  3. QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 14, 2017 -> 09:21 AM) I just don't get what the positives for getting Manny for a season is. You run the risk of really hurting the talent level on the team in two seasons if you don't extend him while giving up a few starting pitchers If you do the deal and don't re-sign Manny, you've really hindered the rebuild. And depending on who you would lose in the trade, you might have just killed the rebuild. Not worth the risk especially when he seems intent upon reaching free agency where the Sox can woo him and gush about the culture, etc.
  4. I honestly just don't get this. If you want Machado so badly, just be offer him the most amount of money in the off-season next year. Does the White Sox organization have such a great culture that he will begging to stay with us if we traded for him? I doubt it. This move just seems to contrary to everything Hahn has done the last year plus.
  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 13, 2017 -> 10:37 AM) Chuck Garfien‏Verified account @ChuckGarfien 50m50 minutes ago Peter Gammons is a big fan of Carson Fulmer. He actually made a comparison to Max Scherzer. Plus, Rick Renteria and Machado/Yelich talk. Podcast: http://bit.ly/2yjzRkR To be fair, Gammons compared Fulmer to Scherzer mentally, i.e., both extremely intelligent individuals who can figure out how to overcome mechanical quirks. Gammons was not implying (and explicitly said so), that Fulmer had Scherzer's stuff.
  6. QUOTE (raBBit @ Dec 10, 2017 -> 12:11 PM) CNN, ABC and NBC all independently confirmed a fake story. A story that was just put out to make Trump and Wikileaks bad. I don't know about the later two but CNN has yet to retract their factually incorrect story. http://money.cnn.com/2017/12/08/media/cnn-...tory/index.html You mean this? Because unlike Trump, most members of the mainstream media care about the accuracy of their reporting. And when they get it wrong, they correct it. Now please show where Trump has corrected any of the 1,000-plus lies/falsehoods he has told.
  7. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 10, 2017 -> 07:32 AM) It’s amazing how thing skinned this idiot is. He can lie thousands of times straight to the public but gets enraged if a media outlet makes a mistake. And then his surrogates and advisors have the gull to attack the media on TV with these same arguments. Fox News had to retract a Roy Moore fraudulent signature story within the last two days and had a huge debacle over the Seth Rich conspiracy yet Trump never has uttered a word about them being "fake news." The ultimate irony is that when the media makes a mistake (at least the most reputable sources like CNN, NBC, ABC, etc.), they retract the story and issue a correction/clarification. Trump has been called out on his many lies and never admits any wrongdoing.
  8. Mize is my favorite prospect in the class, but he has serious health issues that probably force the White Sox away from him.
  9. Kopech truly seems like he wants to be a star and is putting in the effort necessary to do it. You wonder if some other Sox pitchers should follow his routine.
  10. 1) Top 10% (I do not remember my exact rank or even if my high school did precise rankings) 2) 1100 3) Law firm associate
  11. QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Nov 6, 2017 -> 02:24 AM) I can believe that and further to you're point. I know people that have a medicinal mj card and a FOID card and they have said that getting the FOID card was relatively easy whereas getting their medicinal card was a major pain in the ass. Says alot about Illinois law makers. And Illinois has some of the toughest gun laws. Imagine how easy it is to get a gun in say, Indiana, where most guns used in gun-offenses in Chicago originate.
  12. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Oct 28, 2017 -> 01:13 AM) Ya got me! Was just about to come and post that. What more can he do... I think this kid will be the best Sox hitter since Konerko. Perhaps since...Big Frank himself. I can see 310/380/600 lines in his prime. At worst he's 270/350/550. At worst. I love the optimism, but there is no way the FLOOR of a minor league player, no matter how good, is a .900 OPS in the majors. I agree the ceiling on his offensive abilities rivals any minor leaguer, but I've seen way too many can't-miss phenoms miss.
  13. QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Oct 2, 2017 -> 10:54 PM) I am a gun owner. With that being said there has to be limits. First of all if you want to own a gun you should go through a rigorous background check. You should also be required to go through a gun safety class. I don't see why anyone needs an assault rifle. I find it interesting that hunters need things like silencers for hunting. You don't need an AR15 with an large scope, laser site and a silencer to kill a deer. Not everything is a video game. The next part of this is people caught with assault rifles in the commission of a crime should automatically get a multiplier on their sentence. One thing we fail at is the proper enforcement of gun laws. It's not truly a failure to enforce gun laws. In Illinois, for example, the use of a firearm during the commission of an offense automatically adds on 15 years to life in prison on to certain crimes such as armed robbery. There are two main issues with gun laws and criminal punishments. First, with regard to criminals, it can be exceedingly difficult to prove someone had possession of a firearm for purposes of many gun crimes (think, aggravated unlawful possession of a firearm or felon in possession) beyond a reasonable doubt. Unless the gun is found on the person or an officer sees a gun thrown, many of the guns found are in multiple person circumstances where it is hard to pin the gun on one specific person. Second, the basic gun crimes such as felon in possession is punishable by a minimum 2-3 years in jail depending on if its a first offense. Many times, by the time a guy goes to trial and if he has good-time credits for behaving in jail, his sentence is considered time served at the time of sentencing. Long story short, it's not the lack of enforcement, it's the lack of legislatively enacted punishment.
  14. QUOTE (Soxfest @ Sep 28, 2017 -> 06:23 PM) I like Carson Likewise. Really good game script for him given how bad the Colts are.
  15. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Sep 28, 2017 -> 06:11 PM) They took him off the injury report completely, so he should be healthy. The bears D is sneaky good against the run, but he's guaranteed the most touches from those guys. On volume alone he's an RB2 every week with RB1 upside. He's a great play every week.
  16. Six months is the end of March. That's the earliest he could be rehabilitated. Glad that the surgery was nothing major, but looks like another season in which Rodon will not be able to make 30 starts.
  17. QUOTE (ptatc @ Sep 21, 2017 -> 12:40 AM) Yep. i picked up engram because Olsen is out. Today they said Engram is in concussion protocol and may not play. Seriously contemplate Ben Watson if he is available. Flacco loves using the TE and Watson was targeted a boatload last week.
  18. Jim Callis was on Garfien's podcast and basically said the top three in the 2018 Draft after the summer were: Turang, Singer and Hankins. Callis did not talk a lot about the players individually, but did not seem to think there was another college pitcher on/near Singer's level. Mentioned Shane McClanahan from South Florida and Casey Mize from Auburn, but noted that McClanahan had already had TJ and Mize has had to be shut down due to fatigue multiple times already.
  19. QUOTE (Brian @ Sep 11, 2017 -> 07:02 PM) Vincent Jackson still out there. There's a reason for that...I'd rather promote Gentry and try to find someone else on a practice squad. The Bears need to find youngsters who will develop and be part of a playoff team in 2018 or 2019, not a 34-year-old on the verge of retirement.
  20. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Sep 9, 2017 -> 07:17 AM) Nobody ever wants to draft HS pitchers because of the risk involved but Hankins and Rocker both look ridiculous. Kopech, Giolito and Cease were all HS pitchers. 2/3 did have TJS already though. Rockar is a big kid who is already filled out while Hankins is tall but still rather skinny. He is gonna add velocity as he fills out. He is just a wow prospect. Doubt the Sox would go with a high school arm in the top 3 of the draft, though.
  21. QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 7, 2017 -> 01:26 PM) http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/ct-...0907-story.html Could be very important for Chicago. Provides ample opportunity to retain Northwestern/UofI/UofC talent pipeline in state, and CHicago's much more decent job at adding housing makes it possible. It is a good candidate, and clearly chicago leaders feel snakebitten over the foxconn deal, even if they shouldn't. If they get this, huge boon to the city. I feel like the political instability and high taxes of Illinois and the poor finances of both Chicago and Illinois will be the nail in he coffin for getting Amazon to build here. There are undoubtedly many positives for Chicago, as you mentioned, but a couple huge negatives.
  22. QUOTE (Alexeihyeess @ Sep 5, 2017 -> 04:23 PM) No draft picks at all in 2018. Gotta figure that draft picks will be part of the equation, maybe even something with international free agency. Cannot imagine they will have to forfeit games, although something so punitive would definitely have a deterrent effect.
  23. QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 31, 2017 -> 10:23 AM) I think everyone knows where this is going, but I thought I'd put it down in writing. Some of us may be a little apprehensive to hop on the Yurchak Yacht after seeing our ole flame Schnurbusch become forgotten as he moved into full-season ball. But it is funny how similar they are. Schnurbusch 2016 (22 yo) .357/.471/.542/1.013 OPS in 291 PAs Yurchak 2017 (20 yo) .366/.471/.554/1.025 OPS in 228 PAs Schnurbusch was really good! But the big differences: Schnurbusch was 1.5 years old for Great falls, Yurchak is young for his level. Schnurbusch had a 23.7% K rate in GF, Yurchak has only an 11% k rate. Now, as you could tell from their identical OBP, they both featured nice 16-17% walk rates. We kinda sorta know the end to the Schnurbusch story, he has not gotten better as the season has gone along. But the difference in pedigree (in terms of college program), age, and k-rate make him a much, much more interesting 10+ round draft pick lighting world on fire in Great Falls story. This is why I basically ignore any college player's Rookie-level stats. While a bad performance probably indicates no future, a great (even amazing) performance should be viewed with extreme skepticism. The Sox have had plenty of Rookie-league studs over the years, who ended up amounting to nothing. Yurchak definitely have a nice skill set, but I will not think of him as a legitimate prospect unless he continues to perform in full season ball.
  24. On Zavala, nice to see him adjust to better pitching in High A. Not as many HRs as in Low A, but striking out less and walking more. Plus six HRs in 127 ABs is still rather strong from a catcher. I think his jump this year has been the most intriguing development of all of our minor league players. Will be interesting to see him in Double-A next year, getting the majority of catcher starts, as I do not think Collins should be promoted until he can consistently hit High-A pitching.
  25. Kopech: 3 innings, 1 hit, 0 BBs and 4 Ks (33 pitches and 24 strikes).
