  1. I started off a Cubs fan when I was little. I was born on the north side, but moved to the western suburbs when i was 4, so I didn't really grow up in either territory. But in my t-ball league all the teams from the north half of Oak Park were named after national league teams, and we didn't get cable so until I went to a Sox game for the first time in 88 (when i was six) I didn't even know there was another baseball team in Chicago. I lived and died with that 89 Cubs team. Jerome Walton was my favorite player. My brother and I used to pretend to be Shawon Dunston and Ryne Sandberg turning double plays in the front yard. It didn't help that the Sox were pretty bad then. But the 1990 team, and especially Bobby Thigpen going after the save record got me interested in the Sox. Then Frank Thomas showed up and started batting pitchers around like a cat with a mouse, and I was hooked. So yeah, like everyone else, cos of Frank.
  2. had a mini heart attack...was on espn chicago website and saw the headline 'Sox choose nieves as new pitching coach' I was like, what the hell happened to cooper? stupid boston biased media.
  3. QUOTE (Jake @ Sep 5, 2012 -> 10:36 PM) I'm late to the thread, so... Looks like Rios had some of AJ's juice Looks like Peavy had some of AJ's juice Looks like Myers had some of AJ's juice Looks like Gordon had some of AJ's juice Looks like Wise had some of AJ's juice Looks like PK had some of AJ's juice
  4. QUOTE (Jake @ Sep 4, 2012 -> 09:46 PM) It's just proof that one season isn't a valid sample size. It's just proof that pitcher wins are a complete non-statistic.
  5. f*** off with the you're not a real fan if you don't like Hawk. Did you need to love Ron Santo to be a true Cubs fan? At least he was just a color guy. I watch the games with the sound off because he literally adds nothing to them and his voice is grating.
  6. technically it's na zdrowie. no i'm not polish. can't believe i've been lurking here for 9 years. i should post more.
  7. I'm always happy to see the Cubs lose, but that bit has mellowed since 05. The Tigers are annoying right now and seem to be trying to buy a division title, but I can't drum up any true hatred for them. They've been too pathetic for too long. No, it's going to take a long time before the taste of freakish hump dome losses is gone from my mouth. There is nothing worse than going into a 3 game series, and expecting to get swept every time. (and it usually happening) I got so freaking tired of those stupid, crappy, talentless, slap-hitting, no-strikeout pitching Twins out-performing and out-executing us while our manager (and broadcaster) slobbered all over their nuts and basically conceded every series before it was started. Maybe about ten years of them being under .500 will be enough to diminish my hatred for them. Maybe. But that 4 run 9th inning two years ago that the season pretty much turned on is going to be with me for a long time. F*** you Bobby Jenks.
  8. We are certainly riding him like he's not going to be around next year. What is he averaging, 110 pitches per start? Take that FWIW. Depends on how it goes with Danks' arm and how we end up postseason wise but I think you could do worse than him on a 1y deal at 18m. At worse he'd fetch something decent back in a deadline trade.
  9. In the playoffs, Paulie. Today, Rios.
  10. Well if there's one guy you want up there in this situation it's...uh...well, the next guy.
  11. AJ didn't do a whole lot to get out of the way of that one, did he?
  12. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 14, 2012 -> 10:25 PM) Phew. Not too worried about cleveland tbh.
  13. QUOTE (kapzk @ Jul 14, 2012 -> 07:26 PM) Pitching mis-match on paper, however we got owned by the KC pitcher b4, hopefully offense continues their good hitting. Cle trailing 2-0 in the first. Down 6-2 now. It's the mlb.tv free game if anyone wants to watch.
  14. He, Penny, and Brandon Webb are awesome. On MVP Baseball 2005.
  15. Would you sign him to a one year deal worth $18 million? If he keeps this up i think that's a no brainer. If he wants to restructure over a couple of years even better. Worst case he wants a long term deal and he gets traded for a good haul. Sox are sitting in a pretty good position here with Peavy.
  16. It's a false equivalency. If you take ball four you have a 100% chance of getting on base and not making an out, but if you swing (and managed to make contact) you've only got around a 30% chance of getting on base and not making an out.
  17. QUOTE (The Bones @ Sep 29, 2011 -> 09:12 AM) Shaughnessy has got to have the single most punchable face in the world.
  18. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Aug 15, 2011 -> 04:08 AM) So it's Jeter's fault that the Hall of Fame committee severely underrated both Trammell and Whitaker? Because Larkin will be in the Hall of Fame. No, but if he played for, say, Seattle or Milwaukee and didn't have the fortune of playing on so many ridiculously stacked teams, he'd likely be just as overlooked. Of course he's a Hall of Famer, he's a lock. We're just speculating how much of a lock he'd be if he hadn't played for the Yankees. (those guys are all Hall of Famers in my mind, btw)
  19. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Aug 15, 2011 -> 03:55 AM) From his ESPN.com profile. I don't know where they got this information, but I have not seen that from the Sox anywhere. It brings up a great debate though. He has shown to be a lethal weapon out of the pen, most definitely a top-five lefty reliever in baseball. He and Santos are a terrific 1-2 punch in the 8th and 9th inning. However, what he could potentially bring to the rotation is intriguing. Personally, I love him in his role now, but realize as a starter, he makes more of an overall impact. He is as close to Randy Johnson as there has been since RJ retired. But he probably won't keep his velocity as a starter, and I wonder how much of an impact he could make next year as a starter. When it's all said and done, I want him in the rotation, which brings about a ton of other questions because then you have: Peavy Humber Sale Mark (possibly) Danks Floyd Stewart Should be interesting though. What is your guys' take? I think from what he's shown you have to at least try him out as a starter given that the value of a quality starter is so much higher than that of a quality reliever. Worse case scenario it doesn't work out, you sen him back to the pen and he can't re-acclimate...you're only down a good reliever. His talent is too good to not try and see if he can hack it as a starter.
  20. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Jul 12, 2011 -> 04:05 PM) Now I think Jeter is as overrated as anybody, but that is a bit harsh. QUOTE (WHarris1 @ Jul 12, 2011 -> 04:53 PM) My thoughts exactly. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jul 12, 2011 -> 09:18 PM) It's just wrong. http://www.fangraphs.com/graphsw.aspx?play...ayerid5=1013846 Fringe.

    4,256 hits

    QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 11, 2011 -> 03:55 PM) I legitimately think someone will make a run at this mark in our lifetimes. People have made the 2 points already in this thread...if Jeter keeps up his current pace he'll get there...but the thing that will likely stop him is that he'd have to go play somewhere else to get that last season or two in. Ichiro of course is on the pace and would have gotten there had all his Japanese hits been US hits. The fact that we have 2 guys who *could* have done it in the right circumstances means its not unbreachable. What about Pujols? He's already around 2000 and is only 31. If he plays until 43 or 44 (which is a big if, naturally) he might have a shot at 4000.
  22. i think randy johnson won 24 games in 2002
  23. QUOTE(valponick @ Jun 2, 2005 -> 01:09 AM) I can honestly say that I think this was Guillens worst decision so far this year. This has the potential to cause a huge momentum change for this team. Instead of going for the win and sweeping a top AL team you bring in your worst pitcher, why? I think something like this can really take the air out of a team and cause problems, I hope that's not the case but it just has that feeling. you know, it's kind of reminiscent of that series with the yankees two years back when we absolutely destroyed them in the first two games, and instead of stepping on their throats, started cotts for the third game...2 out of three isn't bad
