In fact, the Rangers have played as good of baseball as the Angels since May 1st (or sometime around than).

Official 2008-2009 NHL Thread

It could make sense if the Hawks have someone else out there that they'd like to acquire via trade to fill the offensive void. Afterall, they'd be clearing a lot of caproom and still have some role-players which are expendable that they could package in a deal for a good offensive player. -
Haappy Bday Guys!!!

QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 9, 2008 -> 02:34 PM) So was Felix Diaz back in 2003. Diaz didn't dominant all of major league baseball in his inagural season in the majors.

You can also go to the How Does it Work Forum. I usually move the calendars there after about a week.

IF LA was able to sign Okafor or Smith this off-season I'd still consider them a very good team. I happen to like Okafor a lot and I believe a Kaman/Okafor front court would be very very strong.

I don't really plan on spending it, rather put it in savings. However, I guess you can say with the extra money in savings I was able to go on a trip to Chicago (well will be going on a trip to Chicago, HEHE).

QUOTE (ZoomSlowik @ Jul 9, 2008 -> 12:46 PM) I'm not 100% sure, but the wording would seem to suggest they do: "In a nutshell, the Larry Bird exception allows teams to exceed the salary cap to re-sign their own free agents, at an amount up to the maximum salary. To qualify as a Bird free agent, a player must have played three seasons without being waived or changing teams as a free agent." Technically he's still "their" free agent, they just don't hold an option year or an option to match the contract anymore. What was the difference in what happened with Brand and Davis. Did the Clippers actually renounce the rights to Brand after he opted out? I'm assuming that is the case and the Warriors did not do that? I ask that because I remember reading that the Clippers did not have Larry Bird rights with Brand due to something (I know Brand opted out same as Davis, but the question is did the Clippers also renounce his rights to clear additional room for Davis).

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jul 9, 2008 -> 12:38 PM) For once, I just completely disagree with you here, Gage. Dang, thats pretty rare. I usually read your posts and decide I don't have to comment (cause they are typically right in line with my thought process). I do say that from the Cubs stand-point it has to be considered a steal because Gallagher is the only person who had any value to them (Patterson/Murton were not going to have an impact on the Cubs anytime in the near future unless significant injuries occurred).

QUOTE (ZoomSlowik @ Jul 9, 2008 -> 01:37 PM) They don't have enough money to get him, the only teams with any cap space left are the Clippers, Golden State and Memphis. They'd have to work out a major sign-and-trade with Golden State and they really don't have any good, young talent to send back. Does Golden State have enough cash to put together a sign and trade deal? I'm assuming they are limited by the cap in what they can offer Davis since he opted out? Or am I mistaken in that and they can still offer him a max deal.
-
Apparently Baron Davis cancelled his press conference. I'm sure he's having second thoughts but Golden State no longer has the cap room to come up with an attractive offer and Philly is out of the equation. Memphis won't spend money and the Hawks need to use there caproom on at least one of Smith/Childress. Bottom line, Davis isn't going anywhere but LA. He'll think things for a while and realize thats the case. I don't really know if he could work out a sign and trade given that Golden State doesn't have bird rights to him anymore or the money to put together a significant sign and trade.

He's got major league experience (3 seasons with the Royals; 4.81 ERA in 230.1 minor league innings but has walked 106 and posted an alarming 1.55 WHIP) which is what I believe the Sox were looking for. Thanks for that info Quick. I had been waiting for practically a day now to see who the heck they would be calling up. Somewhere Wasserman has to be disappointed but he really struggled both times he came up this season. Carrasco has posted the following numbers in AAA Charlotte: 1-1, 2.38 ERA, 7 G (1 GS), 22.2 INN, 21 H, 23 K, 7 BB Didn't pitch this season until June 8th.

Is it weird that they played with 24 guys yesterday and still haven't made an announcement of who is up? I did see Elo in the dugout at yesterdays game (not that it means he's playing as I believe he's been traveling with the team and working with Cooper on some strength and conditioning type stuff to help increase his velocity).

Bahaha, I just turned sigs back on for the first time in two years and saw your sig Dan. Love it. In terms of Escobar, can't comment much on him, but you don't get fast tracked the way he has been without having some sort of tools. I'll try to ask around and get some more info on him when I get a chance. Also, anyone notice how KW Jr. has not really played over the past week. I wonder if he's hurt of if its due to him being mired in something like an 0 for 20 slump.
-
Rose jammed his knee late in yesterdays game and is listed as day to day. Tyrus Thomas had a great first half.
-
Paulie, Buehrle, Ray Ray, and Ventura would all rank ahead of Big Frank for me.

Mine was pretty darn high the year I was born (1983). Now it is much less popular (guess I give my name a bad reputation).

Thorty has the best arm in the pen (and I'm including Bobby Jenks). Jenks has better command and better secondary pitches but until he starts blasting the heat in the upper 90's, I fully believe Thornton has the best arm. I'd use him as the primary closer while he's out, but Dotel is another solid option given his closing experience. Of course we could always claim Borowski and use him in the pen

Gordon is legit. Strong arm and he made some nice defensive plays over at 3B. -
The velocity on his fastball is definitely down. I hope Cooper has some tricks up his sleeve to get Jose's fastball back up (maybe it means just throwing more fastballs in his bullpen sessions to strengthen the arm) or giving him an extra day or two of rest for a couple starts (given the all star break approaching, the Sox should be able to alter the rotation to give Jose a few extra days). Than again there is always my preference of trading him (but I realize losing his experience would be huge and the Sox would have to acquire another starter that is better and that will likely cost a lot).

I don't get the concept that this was a lucky win. The Sox hit Davies hard all game and just couldn't come up with a clutch hit. They also had numerous situations with runners on 3rd and less than 2 outs where they couldn't get in the key run. The Royals on the other hand had a couple gift early runs (thanks to Contreras not covering the bag) and not near as many hard hit balls. Both teams definitely played ugly but the reality is that the Sox hit the ball well and could have easily put that game out of reach early on. I'm glad they were able to battle back because had they lost, this would be one of those games where I'd have shaken my head because it would be the type where they beat themselves.

Alright Javy, put up a nice big start and hopefully the offense can put up a ton of runs. Don't want to really use the pen today and if he we do, I want it to be because the Sox have a huge lead and are using Russell and the likes. -
QUOTE (watchtower41 @ Jul 9, 2008 -> 07:54 AM) where did he get this "FREE" pass? If I remember correctly, most whitesox fans, and especially on this board were helping in the effort to build a raft to ship his ass back to Cuba. Organization excuse?? Nobody even knew about his divorce until the season was over, and even still, that's nobody's business but his own. It's like people expect him to win every time out, otherwise chopping block. He's old. He sucks. Trade him. Then fans forgot he won 16 in a row and continues to be a reliable pitcher when he became the backbone of this rotation early on this year. ETDB will be fine people. It was actually well discussed on here about Jose and his divorce right after his opening start last season (I believe he was served divorce papers that day).

Thome isn't an option. Konerko probably isn't either and the only way the Sox could make the deal work is if one of Thome/Konerko is dealt (and as Thome is a DH not a 1B that means Konerko). I'd obviously make a deal involving Konerko and Texeira but the question is what other parts go (Fields & Poreda would be my guess). If the Sox could get him to ink an extension I'd be all over that deal, but I don't think thats the case nor am I even sure the Braves would do that deal. Braves would only do it if Paulie came back and started hitting good for the next couple weeks. And you have to ask yourself if Paulie is hitting good (which is the only way the Braves would want him) than would it really be that much of an upgrade to get Tex (yes, he's much better than Paulie, but Paulie is at least signed and you can move him in the off-season if he's willing to accept a deal) where as with Tex you'd have him this year and than get draft picks.
