QUOTE(Chombi and the Fungi @ Oct 16, 2007 -> 03:19 PM) Definately true. We have a lot of decent guys but no one at the top. Masterson is a guy I really like. Keeps it on the ground. Was it him though or Bowden we wanted though? Also, let's not forget that just because we add more arms that we can't subtract some in other deals. It's not like once you have them, you're stuck with them. Adding a higher quality arm benefits us and teams are more willing to deal more for arms. So trading away a C or low B level arm after acquiring a B-B+ arm wouldn't be a bad idea. Trading away a couple of our guys to get a decent hitting prospects seems logical. The quality over quantity thing is so true, especially for us. The media reports indicated that it was going to be Masterson or that other reliever (whose got an awesome arm) + Willy Mo Pena. Bowden's name came up a bit, but I think Masterson was the guy they wanted.

I wish the Bears would have considered making that sort of deal. Chambers is a darn good WR.

QUOTE(Chombi and the Fungi @ Oct 16, 2007 -> 12:10 PM) ** I haven't heard or seen the rumor anywhere else so I wouldn't be surprised if Boers made it up. Or instead of made it up, he probably suggested it. I've looked and tried to find it through prosportsdaily's newspapers and other websites but just haven't seen anything. **Stoneman leaving I think will go 50/50 for what can happen. They can bring in a "Steve Phillips" like GM who will trade anything to win now, which I would assume any newly hired GM would try to do. Start out throwing all your chips in the pot and if it pans out, youre secure and crowned king of the respected city. Especially with the Angels having a few older vets and with that division gaining in respectability. They have the prospects to deal and could have deals pan out in their favor for immediate success. It could backfire and they could hire a statistics head, build through your organization type guy. Which if so, I wouldn't be surprised to see them deal nothing. **I did see today that the Dbacks are interested in potentially acquiring a SP. Garland and the Sox, I would assume have to be in on the talks if they are serious. There is no room for Carlos Quentin or Carlos Gonzalez with Byrnes, Upton and Young. I wouldn't think it's rocket science to try and work out a deal starting with Quentin and/or Gonzalez (I prefer Gonzalez) and maybe finishing with Max Scherzer. I can't see them doing it but with how close they got last season, why not? Callapso, a 2b prospect has been compared to Kendrick for his constant contact. May not be a bad guy to go after either. Scherzer is a Boras client so I highly highly doubt it, I just went to college with him so I know he is a stud and would love to have him in our organization. We seem to have a good relationship with the Dbacks for deals so I wouldn't be surprised if we are among the top on their list. http://www.eastvalleytribune.com/story/99698 Max may be a Boras client but he's also a guy that you won't even have to deal with Boras for a good number of years. The same could be said with John Danks who was acquired even though he is a Boras client. If you get 5 to 7 good years out of Scherzer before he becomes a UFA than who cares if he ends up walking (you'll take the draft picks or maximize his trade right near the end). Heck, for all you know he opts to change agents or something else happens. I to a point understand drafting away from Boras guys (if there are similar guys on the board that rate out as good tools wise) but once they have signed and they are still in the minors I'll take my chances because you don't even begin dealing with Boras until arbitration kicks in. And you are right about Max being a stud. The only major question with him is whether or not he will be able to stay healthy (I know his last season or so at Mizzu he had some arm issues and those concerns along with Boras had him fall a bit on many draft boards).

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Oct 15, 2007 -> 08:47 PM) Rockies fans are awesome. Especially with Tulo. With more people getting to realize how great Tulowitzki is (and he may end up being better than Reyes & Hanley Ramirez), I'm beginning to wonder when analysts start comparing this crop of 3 young stud ss's to the last crop of threes that came into the league (the past time it was in the AL and it was Jeter/Arod/Nomar).

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Oct 15, 2007 -> 10:05 PM) We're taking some time off until he's a free agent next winter. Then -- when he signs with the Sox to replace Thome -- I've promised him I'm going to buy two of his jerseys, one for me and a nice road-grey for you. If he were to replace Thome I'd support that. Just get him the hell out of the field and let him mash.

QUOTE(gosox41 @ Oct 15, 2007 -> 08:10 PM) What rumor is that? Bob Konerko & Garland for Figgins/Kochman/Shields
-
QUOTE(gosox41 @ Oct 15, 2007 -> 08:17 PM) That's funny. It's funny (in a sad way) because this regime hasn't shown the ability to develop pitching. IN fact it's just the opposite. I'm just curious, who are the top 5 arms in the Sox farm system right now and where do you project them? Bob Top 5 Arms: Faustino De Los Santos (Potential #1 starter, more likely his upside lies as a #2 as there are very few legit #1 type guys). Still a few years away though and with that it means there is a greater chance that things prevent him from reaching that level (ie injuries or some other issues that get in the way). He has the makings of two plus pitches and if he can improve that changeup he'll have the raw abilities to be an above average starter. Gio Gonzalez (Potential #3 Starter). I know some people may rate him a little higher as a starting prospect as he truly is one of the best left handed pitching prospects in baseball (But in no ways would I ever confuse him as the best one). Others would rate him a little lower. He has seen increased velocity on his fastball and a lot of improvement on his changeup to go along with an above average yacker (curve). He could see significant time in Chicago next season, but some in the org feel he still has a bit more to learn before moving to the next level. Egbert (Potential #3 starter, more likely a #4 or #5). Egbert doesn't have great stuff, but he has a bevvy of solid pitches and tremendous command. He gets great sink on his fastball, uses all parts of the plate well and is the most likely on this list to pitch 5 plus seasons at the major league level. However, it would take a lot to go right for him to ever emerge as a front line starter. I think he has the ability to be a solid #3 and I'm fairly confident at worse he will be a #5 (barring injuries). Broadway. See Egbert. I should note that i'm higher than Broadway than most and I could see him developing into a Garland-esque pitcher. He has awesome action on his pitches (ball moves everywhere) but is still working on improving the command on his pitches (they run all over him at times and in the majors that will get him in trouble). He throws a very nice curve with a ton of 12/6 bite when on. Worse case I see him turning into a valuable relief pitcher. Best case, he'll be an above average 3. Like Egbert/Gonzalez you could see him pitching in Chicago next year (and he would definitely pitch in a couple rotations). Aaron Poreda. He has a #1 type fastball but it is far too early to project him as that. Great raw stuff, throws from the left side, but was very raw for a collegiate pitcher out of college. Still, anytime you hit 99 and have seen your command continue to improve you have to like the guys stuff. Needs to really learn how to pitch though and definitely needs to improve his secondary stuff. In a years time he may be at the top of this list (and if I were factoring upside into this he'd move up to the #3 spot on the list of pitchers).

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Oct 15, 2007 -> 09:51 PM) Per usual, Phillips is always a dealbreaker. I believe Crede for Kendrick was on the table at one point but when Stoneman asked for Phillips, Kenny balked (and rightfully so). And Jason, you don't have to defend yourself. My comment wasn't meant as a jab at you, just that you saying Kendrick will win a batting title wasn't really an outlandish, 'fanboy' comment. As you said, you're certainly not the only one to make a statement like that, and, without thinking about it a whole lot, I can't think of another young second baseman who I'd rather have than Kendrick. So long as he stays healthy he has a chance to have a superb career. And I'm no longer Mrs. Dunn -- you can address me as Mrs. Toews or Mrs. Kane. Haha, no offense was taken. Did you at least get some good alimony from Dunn or does he not know you are cheating on him with hockey players of all people???
-
QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Oct 15, 2007 -> 09:44 PM) Jason may be a little 'fanboy-ish' with regards to certain Angels, but I don't think it's that bold of a prediction. Kendrick held a .359 minor league batting average. Hell, as an (partly-injured?) 23 year old this year, Kendrick hit .322. I find it laughable that someone even brought up his name as a possible trade target and even MORE laughable that somebody insinuated the Sox shouldn't trade for him (if offered) because we have Danny freaking (!) Richar manning the position. If the Sox are going to make a trade with LAA, how about for their OFer who was hurt most of the year and looks like he might not have a spot there anymore, Juan Rivera. I think that might make some sense for both teams (provided both players are healthy, of course). Rivera is the guy I want. And fanboyish...ahh emm....Mrs. Adam Dunn Seriously, I'm pretty sure I'm not the only person to ever insinuate that Kendrick would win a batting title. I am biased because I love and I mean love how the Angels "play" baseball (than again most of the Angels I've ever hyped have turned into pretty solid baseball players, with the possible exception of Santana who took a dump this season but I'd still love to have his arm). I fall in love with tools and they have had a good number of toolsy young players the past couple years. Plus, The Angels as a whole just do things so beautifully for the most part (great defense, great baserunning, timely hitting). They just severely lack one more big hitter and one more good hitter to surround Vladdy. But there really isn't any reason not to like the collection of Kochman/Kendrick/Wood (Wood is the one that I think is the most likely to bust, but he's also the most likely to hit 40 to 50+ HR's in a season). As Pratt is to the Braves & Flash to the Twins, I am to the Angels & Dodgers (I am in love where both of the franchises are headed and jealous the Sox can't be in that position). Oh and you are right, the odds of the Angels dealing Kendrick for Garland are slim to none. I doubt they would for Paulie either, but if they did offer up Kendrick and Morales for Konerko I'd bite on it (stick Morales at 1st and Kendrick at 2nd, and deal with Richar as a utility guy). Edit: I actually don't think the Angels would even make that deal for Konerko, but I'd be happy to throw it out to them. It is less than it would take to get Miguel Tejada and the Angels are fans of Paulie. Plus Morales is more of a ??? than Kochman. If the Angels really wanted Garland too, I'd be more than happy to simply ask for Figgins & Spier (I'm assuming the Angels would be happy if a club took on Spier's contract, but if I assume wrong I could do the deal just for Figgins/Kendrick/Morales). Use the money left over to sign a veteran starter to a short term deal (if that is the way you want to go) or use the money to try and trade for a young player nearing FA that you are gonna give a fat contract to become one of the new "franchise" players.

QUOTE(Rex Hudler @ Oct 15, 2007 -> 08:42 PM) What is confusing about that statement? They will lose the 2nd in a row on Saturday. -
QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Oct 15, 2007 -> 08:08 PM) That's quite the prediction. He's that good of a pure hitter. Last guy I said that about was Maggs after watching him for a season in Chicago. Of course I always thought he would win one in Chicago.

Angels fans rejoice..the most overrated GM in baseball is finally gone. Good riddance Mr. Stoneman. God you sucked from a major league stand point (I'd let him run my farm system any day, but not the major league club).

QUOTE(Sonik22 @ Oct 15, 2007 -> 04:11 PM) Your thoughts: a 16 yr old girl hanging out with a 21 yr old guy. I saw way worse this past weekend. I have a friend that is 24 who is hanging out with a 16 year old gal and than at a party I was at on Friday, there was some schmoe that was like 34 with a 17 year old (everyone else at the party was between 20 & 25). It made me feel much better with myself. For the record I think the maturity levels between a 16yr old and 21 year old are far different, plus it is illegal in many states. I think if you are 21 you should find someone that is at least 18. Hell I don't care if you are 25 and going out with an 18 year old because at that case the 18 year is typically in college (Freshman) and capable of making there own decisions (even if they may not always be the best decisions).

QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Oct 14, 2007 -> 10:51 AM) They better trade Dunn soon; clogging up the bases is bad. They should have moved Dunn two years ago when teams everywhere were ready to give up multiple top prospects for him (theyd still give up a lot, but not as much as before). God is Dunn over-rated (however, he's gotten less hype the past year which makes him a bit less over-rated now).

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Oct 14, 2007 -> 07:02 PM) We already have at least a decent looking young 2nd baseman. We don't have a spot for Kendrick. At least give me someone who looks like they belong at SS, don't give me someone we have to move there. Kendrick >>>>> Richar I agree thta there are other priorities but Kendrick is gonna win a batting title. I would have zero problem if the Sox acquired Kendrick and used Richar in platoon role (I'd prefer one of there SS prospects though).

QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Oct 15, 2007 -> 01:45 PM) It's cases like this that I really feel like the organization is asleep at the wheel. This situation, along with not Hall surgery issue are puzzling. The Sox were out of the race by mid July. Why did Toby not have his surgery then? Has he even had it yet? Rehab was done instead of the surgery and he was supposed to be able to heal his arm through rehab. Last I knew he was not planning on ever under-going the surgery and consistent rehab should eventually get him back (in fact I think he was pretty healthy late this season...not that his statitistics would indicate such) to 100% (or close to 100%). I know Pedro opted to rehab a couple different times as opposed to having surgery. Pedro's brother Ramon Martinez did such a couple times as well and while those are both examples of pitchers following a plan of rehab/restrengthening as opposed to surgery there are even more position type players that took similar paths (since they don't put near as much stress on there shoulders on a consistent basis). Bottom line Hall is the type of guy you'd get rid of if you can. Unfortunately they won't get anyone to take his contract cause I'd prefer having a defensive stud like Molina backing up AJ. -
While I think the White Sox have been pretty mediocre at best in there scouting outside of the US, it is necessary to point out that they probably still are in the top 2/3rds in baseball in terms of what they spend on there international operations (heck I wouldn't be shocked to see them in the top 15). However, the Dodgers/Angels/Yankees/Mets/Braves are all amongst the top 7 in all of baseball in international scouting (and spending) and all of those teams also have very good baseball teams. The White Sox are nowhere near these clubs and they need to be striving to get to these clubs levels. Not only do these clubs spend more money (which is one of the factors) but they also have more developed in the international systems and a better reputation (players take note of which teams are better at developing, at least top players, and they will be more likely to join those systems). The White Sox are greatly improving in this area as they have made some great hires and gotten some very well known and well respected international guru's and contacts involved (29thandPoplar has documented that well). They have also made more impact signings the past couple years in guys like Anderson Gomes, Po-Yu Lin, Salvador Sanchez, and this new SS). I'm sure there could be other guys that are yet to be on our radars as well. Obviously the results on the current guys have not been great, but it is still early, and this is almost like a lottery where you know a good chunk of the guys won't pan out. PLus along with getting more toolsy guys in the system, you also have to have the coaches that can mold there abilities and help hone them into good fundemental players who will be able to succeed at the major league level. Right now I can confidently say for the first time, that I fully believe the Sox farm system is heading in the right direction when it comes to international operations (Ozzie's pure rep, even though he isn't involved in this part of the baseball operations, also has a significant positive influence). We've seen progress each of the past three years and that progress has been gettting exponentially better. The next step will be to see the results of this progress start to hit the lower and mid levels of the minors and than 3-6 years down the road we should see that progress making a consistent impact on the major league squad. If they can also correct their draft scouting and minor league developmental system we should see similar improvements and when you combine both (International/Drafting) you could see the Sox turn into a team that consistently has a strong system (ala the Braves/Angels/Dodgers). The Yankees are quickly looking like a team that will consistently be on this list. I should also put the Marlins on here, but to a point you should have a consistently strong system when you are constantly trading away good young pieces for top notch prospects (albeit they clearly deserve a pat on the back for identifying talented prospects and doing an outstanding job developing the guys in there system).

QUOTE(fathom @ Oct 14, 2007 -> 01:13 PM) I deleted my post, as I don't want to get into the whole Griese/Grossman debate again. Griese was atrocious today up until the last two drives. He was worse than atrocious and yet somehow people are acting like he had a good game. He had two good drives, one against a prevent prevent defense and the other was an awesome pass to Hester (I tip my cap to that). But that first drive shouldn't have even happened as he threw a pick that was dropped (horrible pass) before the Bears got the TD to Moose.
