Would You Care if We Started Over?
I've always said this place is fun for me so I never and will never charge any sort of membership fee (you can all hold me to that). I recover costs now through the couple advertisers that are up here and one day I hope to make some nice side money on the other sports sites that are up (however, never at the members expense). Now thats not to say if someone offered me a 100K advertisement deal that I wouldn't jump on it (wink wink to any big time backers out there, LOL). Glad everyone here likes this place as I know without it I personally would know a heck of a lot less about the Sox.

Would You Care if We Started Over?
We are going to do this where we hopefully have absolutely no site outage (we have already backed everything up) and I'm actually doing the install right now. We will be cleaning all the bugs up or at least most of them before launching the new version sometime tomorrow. We will also have an outage later on this week when we likely double the server's ram (which should also help the site out).

Aaron Rowand
I'd be stunned if he wasn't back. The question is whether the Sox will have the resources to bring Aaron and another FA in.

Would You Care if We Started Over?
I think when we start over we will go through and look at ways we can organize this place even better but we will also always take into account whether splitting a forum up a bit will take away too much discussion and in a sense make the forum inactive or little used. So the crew will definitely take a look at that and see if it would work (heck I don't venture much into some of those areas so I'm going to go through places looking to see what can be added, what can be shrunk, etc) and see if any other peoples ideas would work. Lord knows we've consitently done this on a trial and error basis and we are always up for trying knew thinks that could make this place better. Also note, if you have any important PM's grab the info. In an ideal world you will have access to them again in 2 weeks but with me doing some of the work you never really know if you will

Would You Care if We Started Over?
Ya, we could definitely have some bugs and stuff after completion but just know we will be working as hard as we can to get everything solved so we can rock and roll from here on out.

Would You Care if We Started Over?
The Soxtalk.com staff would like to inform the members of a temporary site closure that will occur during the All Star Game (July 10th, 2007). During the ASG, the Soxtalk.com crew will be working behind the scenes to build a new message forum in order to try and alleviate the server issues. Unfortunately, after the forum is created, every member will have to reregister and start from scratch so to speak as we will be starting over with zero posts, zero members, and zero world series titles (something I hope the Sox will quickly change). After everything is done we hope you will continue to choose to come to Soxtalk.com for all your White Sox needs and we will do our very best to continue to provide the best place to discuss and follow White Sox baseball!!!!! We will also continue to push ourselves to release new features and constantly make this place better. We appreciate all your support over the years and look forward to what the future of this site will bring With that, if you have any signatures or avatars will you please save them onto your computer so you can easily access them (we will most likely have access to all that stuff, but it will not be for a minimum of a couple weeks, which is when we'll have an archive set up for this site).

McCulloch Prospect of the Month
Yeah, I had a hard time making my votes because so many guys kicked ass. Still in the end it was impossible for me to look past McCullochs ridiculous stats.

Would You Care if We Started Over?
QUOTE(BearSox @ Jul 9, 2007 -> 02:40 PM) question: how long would the board be down? If only a couple of days, I say do it now. If not, wait until after the baseball season. Also, TalkBears, TalkBulls, etc. would all remain the same, right? Ya, it would be at maximum a one day closer. I should have planned this out better but If I could find time and work with Kap on it we could potentially do it in a day sometime before the ASB comes to an end (of course that doesn't mean it will work out that way as we are still exploring some other options).

QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jul 9, 2007 -> 02:37 PM) But my ignore list filled with banned users!!! I wouldn't mind starting over, but please keep those who were banned from here to remain banned. No second choices for those guys. Are you going to wait until july 31st like KW to see if this thing needs to be blown up? And have no fear...the banned list will be moved.

Home plate umpire yesterday
Bear...I know the times I did it, you would get 40-50 per game but I never took any classes so I don't know if I was a IHSA ump or not. I just knew the guy in charge of umping (teammates dad) and did games over the summer (not many) but I do know the pay was great as a kid.

Dan Patrick Leaving ESPN
QUOTE(Greg The Bull Luzinski @ Jul 9, 2007 -> 01:07 PM) Story Hooray! Now if only they could get that bid fat turd Chris Berman to be back back back back gone with him too. I wonder what they will do with the dead air time on ESPN radio that went by the name "The Dan Patrick Show." Horrible news. Dan Patrick is my favorite and his radio show is also my favorite radio show on the air. QUOTE(longshot7 @ Jul 9, 2007 -> 01:28 PM) I like his show in small doses, but it will be missed. The heyday of it was the interplay between him and Dibble. Dibs and Patrick was the best that radio could be. Would You Care if We Started Over?
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 9, 2007 -> 01:52 PM) I don't care about post counts, but I do like having access to all the previous posts. That would be the downside, to me - having a seperate site and a current site to look at for various things. If the database basics are remaining static (meaning you aren't change the type of DB you use), you may also be able to import the old data into the new format (of the message board layer software allows for that, and hasn't changed its architecture from version to version). What we would do is essentially archive this site and have it accessible at soxtalk.net (we own that domain as well) and have the posts turned off but you could always go through and look at it. Than Soxtalk.com would have all of the new posts and everything would be fresh (we stlil use the same mysql database but the problem is our database, which is absolutely ginormous...think about a notepad document that is well over a couple gigs) is corrupt and we can't go in and get rid of that corruption without spending a lot of money (cause none of us have the knowledge to do so and from the sounds of it it is also a very labor intense project). So basically put you would still be able to see the site, looking like it does now (with on ads on the .net version) but it would be a non working version (aside from looking at posts). In a year or two this place would really be the only place most look (aside from the ocassional glance to see the 05 archive or whatever else people are curious about).

Would You Care if We Started Over?
QUOTE(knightni @ Jul 9, 2007 -> 01:45 PM) Can't you just manually edit post counts? The technical answer is yes, but if we did that any time we ever wanted to sync up the database or restore things we'd have to go in and manually edit them back (as a recount would just count the posts made and would not factor in our manual entry so it would be very labor intense considering the number of members). But what we could potentially do (and I say potentially because its not something I personally would want to do nor would I want anyone else to do it) would be to create a new category where people could put in there old post count (call it something) so that number would still kind of stay so to speak. I figure this site is still young (in terms of the net) so it won't take too long till we are celebrating many more great accomplishments and it will be great doing so on a server enviornment that works right.

Iguchi
QUOTE(BamaDoc @ Jul 9, 2007 -> 11:59 AM) Now that Iguchi is begining to hit do you trade him, resign him or let him walk. I don't know what level of compensation picks he might bring if any due to his status. Based on what I've read we would not get any draft pick compensation for Iguchi (as part of his contract prevents us from offering arb). I don't know if he has much trade value but he would obviously add value to a contender and should be moved (unless of course the Sox think he can help them get Ichiro or the other Japanese outfielder). However, 2nd baseman are generally undervalued (both on the market as FA's and via trade) and I doubt we would get any significant prospects for him. That doesn't mean we wouldn't get value for him though.

Would You Care if We Started Over?
It has come to our attention (and has been so for a long long time) that part of the problem with our database stems from an upgrade we made around 2 years ago. The upgrade caused a lot of errors in the database (and our db is huge) and these errors lead to slower queries and the db sticking from time to time (in my non technical terminology since I don't know the technical terminology, lol). I think the only way to ever really solve this problem (aside from going to a database specialist and paying a couple thousand bucks, which unfortunately is not an option, unless of course I win the lottery) is to start the site over. By starting over I mean installing a brand new version of the message board (no posts, no anything). The only potential thing we would be able to restore would be user names. This means nifty things like post counts and all that would be gone. However, we would plan on saving our old database and creating an archive (so that people could still look back and see all the old posts). I figure the long term benefits (faster site, able to search, doesn't crash when big news happens, etc) would be well worth the short term losses and hassle. I just wanted to throw this out to public opinion though to see if you all would be overly dissapointed or if you would be okay with this (basically if so we'd test it and make sure that the db was in fact the cause of the problem and if it wasn't, we would than bring back the old database and continue to see what the cause of the server issue is). This site should be able to handle a lot more than it does and we want to get it set up so it can so that we can continue to make and turn this into a better place.

Iguchi
QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Jul 9, 2007 -> 12:33 PM) If you'll remember, when making some preliminary roster projections for the 2008 season, I predicted Iguchi will re-sign with the White Sox on the cheap after a disappointing 2007 campaign. Now, that is really starting to look like a possibility. Depending on what Williams does before the trade-deadline and during the off-season, I could easily see Iguchi brought back for $3M for 2 years, perhaps with a mutual option on a third. Naturally, this is all academic if Williams receives some nice offers before the deadline--then, it's simply a no-brainer to move him. My main problem is that the Sox really need to increase the team speed and they should do it at CF, SS, and 2B. If they can do that we would see much more of an Ozzie lineup and that in itself should make Ozzie a much more effective manager. Obviously I'm not saying all the players should have is speed, but they should be able to go from 1st to 3rd, ocassoinally steal a base, and well score from 2nd on a single. I can live with Paulie/Thome/AJP being the three slow guys in the lineup (I'd prefer just Paulie and AJP with Thome getting shipped for upper level major league ready prospects) and the rest possesing average to above average speed (I consider avg speed a guy that can go from 1st to 3rd).

Kosuke Fukodome
QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Jul 9, 2007 -> 11:18 AM) What about Michael Bourn? Seems to be just what Ozzie would want. I would like Bourn, but I'd want to give up guys like MacDougall or in house prospects like Broadway to get him. I don't know if that is something the Phils would do. Plus if you got him I'd like to let him start in the 9 spot and work his way up to the top of the order as he's still a pretty raw player (tons of speed though and some ability to go with it).

Khalil Greene Leaving the West Coast for the South Side?
QUOTE(wilmot825 @ Jul 9, 2007 -> 12:28 PM) http://www.fannation.com/truth_and_rumors/view/11753 Please Make That Deal! Greene is the white version of Ozzie, but with a little more of a bat. If the Sox were able to turn Jermaine Dye, Juan Uribe and Jose Contreras into Khalil Greene, Scott Linebrink and Matt Kemp I would be an extremely happy individual. The Sox would upgrade there pen (of course I don't think the Pads would make this deal) while upgrading at SS and making a long term upgrade in the OF (the Sox would also be substantially lowering payroll which will enable them to fill other holes). Plus Greene is a guy who is getting close to entering his prime while Kemp is still a very raw player who won't enter his prime for a while but has the ability to be an all star for a long time (something we can't say about many of the Sox internal prospects). I should note that I doubt we could get Kemp for Contreras but I could be wrong. I do think Dye/Uribe for Greene would be a deal the Pads consider (as they get a guy who could be the bat they need in the OF while not really losing a beat at SS; even though I think Greene is a much better long term alternative; the question really would be whether the Pads think Dye could get healthy this year because a healthy Dye is a significant bat added to a weak Pads lineup). I do not think the Sox would be able to land Linebrink though, however, if they did it would be a major coup because they could than get Type A compensation for him when/if he leaves as a FA and if we keep him he helps the pen (even though he could be due to struggle moving from Petco to the AL). QUOTE(iamshack @ Jul 9, 2007 -> 12:44 PM) The Padres already passed on this deal and acquired Milton Bradley. They no longer have any interest in Dye. This rumor came out after the Pads acquired Bradley. Regardless the Pads have a need to significantly upgrade the offense. Do the Sox still have Carlos Lee???
Ya, he is no longer in the Sox system. IIRC he was a catcher while in the Sox system and they looked quite a bit alike.

SSR: Who Stays and Who Goes
I ask you all to keep posting up some topics you guys would like to here us banter about in the upcoming shows and I'll do my best to get some minor league guests on in the coming week (maybe even try to get some other bloggers on board so we have some fresh voices). I also appreciate everyones weekly feedback as it helps give us a better idea of what we do good and what we need to do better or add. We should finally have a site for the podcast in the next week or two. We are also anticipating our next recording being tomorrow (with the trade deadline coming up we are going to try and do a few more shows than usual so they stay fresh since news seems to be always changing). This show will likely be more of a review of the past half with a segment talking about Buehrle and his rammifcations on the future.

Extending Dye
QUOTE(WCSox @ Jul 9, 2007 -> 10:19 AM) Didn't know that. I'm assuming that most established vets don't accept arbitration offers. I don't think that JD accepts it either, especially with his skills in clear decline. No reason for him to risk having another sub-par season and losing millions on the FA market afterwards. My feeling is that he'll sign a three-year deal at about $24 million elsewhere. I agree on the 3yr 24 deal and I think it will be with the Rangers.
