  1. QUOTE(WCSox @ Jul 9, 2007 -> 10:03 AM) Perhaps I'm reading this incorrectly, but hasn't Dye been in the league a bit too long to be arbitration-eligible? And no way that he signs anything in the $6 million/year range. And there's no way that the Sox re-sign him. Thanks for '05 and '06, JD, but you're going to have to find a new home next year. You still can offer a player arbitration and basically put if he accepts it than you work out a one year deal with him (that goes through an arbitrator). Maddux did this a couple times. You can also accept arbitration and than sign a one year deal with the club (as to go past the arbitration process). The reason the Sox offer arb is to ensure that they get draft picks for Dye who signs elsewhere. However, you do run the risk of Dye accepting arbitration and coming back to Chicago for a year. My question is will the White Sox be timid in the FA market because they offer Dye arb (if in fact they don't deal him). God, I would love to find a way to get Kemp in some sort of package involving Dye and prospects or Dye and a reliever or Dye and a starter. God, get me Kemp as one of our 3 outfielders next year.
  2. I would be all for him, a vet signing, plus a youngster in our outfield. We still would need a top of the order hitter though (as I assume the Sox would use him a bit lower in the order based upon his power, plus the fact that I'm sure there would be an adjustment period when he came over to the majors).

Oh dang, I didn't realize the new movie was already coming out this week. I'll definitely be seeing that. I love all the Potter movies.
  4. QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Jul 9, 2007 -> 09:55 AM) How about Contreras and Uribe for Hudson and Quentin? I think I'd rather keep Iguchi and get more for him. I don't think you move Uribe until you know you have someone to play SS. So until that point you must keep Juan because the other options out there (via FA) are serious downgrades, imo.
  5. I was very dissapointed to see that Erstad and Pods are still not ready to come off the DL. It sounds like Erstad may or may not be back within the next 12 or so days (assuming if at some point in the next 10 he goes on a short 4 game rehab assignment of sorts) and there was no more info on Pods. I was hoping both would come back and play in about 10 games before the trade deadline as both could add value to a contending club (maybe not as key pieces, but as the small pieces that could provide some valuable late inning base running or defense down the stretch). I would think both would be assets on NL ball clubs that are in contention (based on how many more substitutions happen) but both could help an AL club as well. In terms of prospects, I am thinking AAAA type players (who maybe can make it in a pen) or lower level guys that won't be in the majors for some time (if ever). Obviously we are not talking about getting a top 10 prospect in the org so this type of move is the type where you really put it on your scouts to find guys in a system that you think have some potential if they can make a couple changes.
  6. QUOTE(michelangelosmonkey @ Jul 9, 2007 -> 09:18 AM) I'm not positive on how the compensation works...but I think he has to be top 10 at his position to get the two picks. They use two years I think...so I wouldn't bet that he's a sure thing for compensation. I do like your 4-6 mill with incentives idea. But as for Ichiro, Jones, Rowand, Hunter? I suspect they will all be way more expensive than $8 mill per. I agree that those guys will be more expensive than 8 million (actually I think Rowand signs for 8 and I could make a case for taking Dye over Rowand, although Rowand fills a much bigger need in CF, but I'd hope to heck the Sox could get him for less than 8). Unless of course Rowand continues to hit like he has for most of this season. But I do think Ichiro/Jones/Hunter are all worth at least 3-4 million more. I typically think teams are best suited going for the very best of the FA's available or waiting around for the guys that don't get what they want and end up having to settle for less. This is because you are either getting the best or a very good value but the mediocre players that get overpaid tend to turn into the worse contracts (this past off-season I didn't see the Soriano one as that horrid because you rae getting a premiere player, but some of those pitching contracts were horrid). A good example of a value signing would have been the Sox signing Iguchi or AJP (both floundered around and finally signed).
  7. Thanks Knight!!!!
  8. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jul 8, 2007 -> 09:49 PM) Kenny saying "buyer's mode" is different than a GM like Omar Minaya saying the Mets are in "buyers mode". I'm taking this to mean that if (or, more appropriatey, when) Kenny trades Dye, Iguchi and/or Contreras, he's looking for young players who can step in and play within the next year. I think he feels that he's built up a strong enough rotation to where the Sox won't have to go through a total "rebuilding" mode, so he wants guys like Richar who, at the very least, will be competing for a spot in 2008. I don't take this to mean the Sox will be offering Gio Gonzalez and Ryan Sweeney for Ken Griffey in an effort to save 2007. That is what I am hoping. I also think Kenny will be using this quote to give him more leverage. It could, however, mean the club also uses prospects it doesn't like as much to buy other young players that could step in and fill holes for the Sox this year and the next few years. So as long as we aren't trading for veterans, rather we are acquiring younger players (that aren't due for FA soon) than I would be a fan of buying (in a sense our selling of Dye or whomever could really be the club buying other players that Kenny likes). However, if we buy a bunch of vets I will be so damn pissed. QUOTE(LDF @ Jul 9, 2007 -> 03:18 AM) since when? i would have sworn that he lost on the freddy for floyd trade. Whether he could have gotten more than Floyd/Gio is definitely a possibility but a true loss would have been the Sox holding onto Freddy and getting nothing for him. They have Gio who is developing into one of the better LHP prospects in the game (although i won't regard him in the same class as guys like Kershaw). Gio needs to still work on some things but he has good velocity to his fastball, an improving change, and a very good curve and could find his way into a big league rotation for a number of years. Floyd still has that potential as well (albeit I would write him off if he didn't have some success this season with the major league club; I should note that I want Floyd to start the rest of the season with the club with Contreras being gone).
  9. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Jul 9, 2007 -> 06:30 AM) Hasn't Jon mentioned this knot from time to time. The knot basically just at times causes some stiffness in his shoulder. Either way its something I hate hearing from a guy I consider one of the most durable pitchers in all of baseball.
  10. QUOTE(Steff @ Jul 9, 2007 -> 07:06 AM) Yikes..! Look at what the cat dragged in!! Hope all is well. BTW, for those of you that know him, I spoke to RPS on Thursday. He's doing awesome. Awesome. All this brings me back to the olden days.
  11. QUOTE(MurcieOne @ Jul 8, 2007 -> 08:47 PM) keep ignoring me Jason.... my heart, much like my will, is made of stone and brillo pads.... it will sand you down eventually. How can I ignore the great Murcie...the man that helped turned SoxNet from a two man show (and a very unpopular one at that) into Soxtalk (one of the best baseball communities on the web). Plus we had such features as "Murcie's House of Love".
  12. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Jul 9, 2007 -> 08:15 AM) Depending on who he goes to, the supplemental picks will be worth something. He is a long framed, aging OF who has issues this year with his legs. He has slowed down over the last few years and projects to be a DH more than a OF and we have a DH right now. I dont know if we want to back that for a few years at a lot of money. Even if he goes to one of the worse teams in baseball, we will still get decent picks. Worse case you don't get as many first rounders but you are still getting talent (plus often times you can get first round talent a little later if you pay extra). I would be all for Dye if you got him at a bargain. 8 mill a year isn't that. You get him to agree to an incentive laden 2-3 year at 4-6 mill deal and I'd think that would be a decent option with the club than finding a CF and sticking with youth in the other spot. I should point that we would be signing Dye as a LF, not a RF. Note: I still think a team will give him around 3yr 24 mill and that could turn into a good deal but it is also too much for the Sox to pay when there are guys like Ichiro, Andruw Jones, Aaron Rowand, and Torri Hunter out there.
  13. It scares me to think Kenny wouldn't trade some of those olders players. This team needs a good dose of youth to be mixed in with the veteran presence and unfortunately that does of youth is not going to be coming from our own farm system (since we don't have that type of talent).
  14. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jul 8, 2007 -> 08:18 PM) I've been here over two years, and I don't think I've ever seen a post of yours. Yet, you have over 4,000. What am I missing here? LDF is old school...one of the first posters I ever remember being here (in fact he posted here before the place was Soxtalk and we were using a different board format).
  15. Chisoxfn replied to Sonik22's topic in FutureSox Board
McCulloch is healthy but he left the game due to field conditions or something like that.
  16. Whats your point. One hit 20 plus points higher and actually looked decent at the plate. He's also absolutely killing AAA right now. Just to point something out I've said that about Anderson from day one and so far thats making me look pretty good (wish it wasn't cause Anderson is a tremendous athlete). I have also never heard anything about Cedeno having a crappy attitude. I'm sure your going to tell me how Cedeno has a crappy OPS and whatever else but I'm not all that concerned with OPS out of the shortstop position, especially if a guy could potentially hit for a pretty good average. And by all means I'm not saying Cedeno is a sure fire thing but he has talent.
  17. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jul 8, 2007 -> 06:29 PM) I think when all is said and done, someone is going to give Hunter more years and more dollars per year, by a wide margin. Remember the Red Sox need a CF, and they need him badly. If Seattle keeps playing well, and makes Ichiro want to still stay there, then Hunter is the #1 CF on the open market, and you know what that means... The Red Sox have JD Drew, Coco Crisp, Manny Ramirez, Ellsbury so they really aren't too desperate for a CFer. The Yanks have Damon so realistically the two big spenders will be out. The Angels have Matthews JR and the Dodgers just spent money on Pierre in CF (whom I'm pretty sure the Sox could get for pretty much nothing if they wanted him) so that takes out two more big spenders.
  18. I think the Dbacks are a bit down on Quentin and I would be a fan of acquiring him. I dont' know if they would want Dye or if we could be a team that gives up the prospects to another team in some sort of 3 way deal (with Broadway or someone else going to another team...Quentin coming to the Sox and a bat going to the Dbacks). I don't think I'd give up more than Dye to get Quentin but I would like Quentin in our system.
  19. Welcome aboard Lemon. Good to have you here. As far as the trades go, I think the one that is the most plausible would be the Garland/Dye to the Dodgers for Billingsley/Broxton/Kemp. I don't think that deal actually gets done but if the Sox and Dodgers want to make a deal I think they could do something similar in terms of talent that goes. Kemp would be a key piece to any deal with the Dodgers as should Hu (AA shortstop that is being promoted to AAA after the Futures Game) plus a starting pitching prospect (if you could get Billingsley fantastic) but I think you would settle for another highly touted prospect. I do not think the Dodgers part with Broxton as they are buying for the pennant race and it would not be wise to part with one of there more talented relievers. As far as Jose goes, I think you are over-rating his trade value immensley. The Mets indicated they would not give up one of Pelfrey/Milledge for Buehrle so I find it hard to believe they would give up both for Contreras (if one). However, if the Sox can get a good prospect for Contreras they should take the deal and run, imo. That said I may under-rate Joses value but he has been horrid and has dropped 7 MPH off his fastball which has to concern scouts. In terms of Hudson, I doubt the club will go after him but if they did the Sox could be interested but the Dbacks would have little interest in Anderson. They alreayd have Chris Young slotted into Cf for a long time plus they have Carlos Gonzalez and Quentin pencilled in to go with Eric Byrnes (who they may try to bring back) so there really isn't a fit for Anderson. And that doesn't even factor in Justin Upton, one of the premiere prospects in all of baseball. The Sox are also very high on Richar so he'll likely be given a shot to play 2nd.
  20. You might as well let Wasserman come up and see what happens. Maybe he'll stick but most likely he won't (still at this point no harm in trying). Hu is absolutely legit. I fell in love with this guy just watching him in today's game. Wow, he just knows how to play and has a very good mixture of tools. He's going to be the type of player that helps a team win for a long long time (to see him go opposite field and do the little things was just impressive). Of course I'm basing that on the one time I've seen him play but I've read other prognosticators who have said similar things. I would love him on the Sox but I highly doubt Jermaine Dye will fetch that (unless of course he mashes over the next couple of weeks). Ellsbury is a guy that is probably not an option for the Sox unless Garland or Javy are headed to Boston. Ellsbury is ridiculously fast and projects to be an above average defensive center fielder (poor arm though). He will not hit for much power but doesn't strike out much and has shown improving strike zone judgement. He could definitely be a fixture a top the order for the next 5-10 years, posting a .360 OBP or higher all while stealing 50+ bases (at least thats what the Red Sox or a team that acquires him will hope). I'd rather have Juan Uribe than Jack Wilson, but thats just me. If the Sox want to get rid of Uribe they need to find a way to get a legitimate SS prospect that is close to major league ready (whether thats Hu, Ronny Cedeno or if they somehow think Richar is gonna be able to play SS although I highly doubt that will be the case).
  21. Bucholtz had a nasty curve, but the other stuff wasn't much (his fastball was meh and I didn't see any other impressive secondary stuff). Still, the highlights they showed of him were insane (the curves he was throwing). Kershaw had great velocity for a youngster but I didn't see him throw any brilliant curves while in. That said, its hard to judge anyone on one short outing in an all star type of game. Kershaw is supposed to have one of the best curve balls in milb.
  22. Fantastic post Jackie and thanks for everything you've done so far Mark and I look forward to you doing a lot more in a Sox uniform!!!!
  23. QUOTE(BearSox @ Jul 8, 2007 -> 05:42 PM) If we could get a ML ready catching prospect, like Salty (somehow), I'd think AJP to the Cubs would be a pretty good deal. We could probably get a pretty good return as the Cubs are in need of a Catcher who can hit his weight. Ya, I was asking around because I thought AJ would be a great fit for the Cubs and Murton/Cedeno would fill two major needs for the Sox. The key would be finding a way to get a catcher from someone and than using Hall as the insurance policy (plus you have Donny Lucy down in AA).
  24. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jul 8, 2007 -> 05:09 PM) For the differences in money, I would rather have Aaron Rowand in CF next year... I think you will be surprised and there will only be a couple mill difference in money between the two and at that rate I'm taking Hunter who is hands down the better and more consistent player. But if I were wrong and Rowand would take less money than I think he'll get offered (I think someone goes as high as 9 million over 4 years) than I would be happy with that.
  25. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jul 8, 2007 -> 05:21 PM) Sounds promising on DLS from what I've read here. Starting out in the low to mid 90's, and then hitting 95-96 as he went on. If he can develop that change (which I'm confident he can, because many other Sox SP prospects such as B-Mac have), he'll become quite the prospect. He's ready for high A, and I wouldn't mind seeing him in AA as a matter of fact. The ballpark will help him, but you've got to consider is he being rushed too early? That is too big of a jump and there is no reason to do it.
