QUOTE(Jenks Heat @ Jul 3, 2007 -> 11:15 AM) I think it should include the best home run hitters whether thye are All-Stars or not just to keep it interesting. Even with his horrible start to the season Howard is one of the better sluggers in the game and deserves to be there. I'm glad he'll be there and I think the Derby should year in year out have the best power hitters out there cause thats what makes the event fun.

Ken Williams would instantly become the worse GM in baseball if this deal was made. If you make a deal with the Cards and don't get Rasmus, well that right there is problem number one. Two drafts picks >>>>> infinity the package that message board is speculating over. QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 2, 2007 -> 07:47 PM) Trust me, just about every trade proposal involving the Cards on this site has Reyes involved. Nah, seems like the exact opposite. It seems like ever Cards fan in the world is trying to pawn of Reyes. I will freaking throw up if Reyes is the best player in the deal....if he's the 4th best, fine.

QUOTE(danman31 @ Jul 2, 2007 -> 02:45 PM) He is on Bristol so looking in the Great Falls paper won't work heh. Try tricities.com. It looks like they are pretty good about doing game recaps. This was a cool link, interesting story, but didn't mention velocity Holy snikies....gotta love the FutureSox reference from the article

QUOTE(diegotony06 @ Jul 2, 2007 -> 03:36 PM) KW is on CTL, he said he is optimistic the MB will get signed. He said he regrets that so much of the contract has been made public, but it is what it is. He says that the NTC basically the only point in the contract that he wouldn't be protected by the NTC would be in the middle of the contract, maybe 18 months. But he says he is optimistic about him signing so I guess we are just gonna have to wait and see. Awesome. Ya, his 10/5 rights kick in so it sounds like the Sox are going to try and have a window where they can move Mark, but are going to tell him the only way this happens is if something un-forseen happens. I'm still optimistic a deal gets done. QUOTE(diegotony06 @ Jul 2, 2007 -> 03:36 PM) KW is on CTL, he said he is optimistic the MB will get signed. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jul 2, 2007 -> 05:13 PM) Sure there is -- dude can't even put up an .800 OPS in a tiny ballpark. I'd guess it would be more of the same as his first call-up -- pitcher's would pound him hard in-in-in. Umm..he posted an 800+ OPS over the past month since being sent down. QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 2, 2007 -> 05:25 PM) I laugh at those that don't think Ozzie needs his "speed" guy at the top of the order. I think he needs his speed guy...I've said it all off-season Kenny really screwed the pooch both this year and last year when it came to not giving Ozzie what he needs (athletes to go along with his horses...ie pitchers). But Sweeney is an athlete and Owens is well a 5th outfielder.
-
You got to be kidding me. Sweeney should be playing every day. God what a terrible decision. Sweeney has a future...Owens does not.

QUOTE(IlliniKrush @ Jul 2, 2007 -> 02:36 PM) Hawks sign Lang, 2 years http://blackhawks.nhl.com/team/app/?servic...rticleid=327004 I like this move. Lang is a good veteran to have around to help teach all the young offensive players. He also has a history of winning which will hopefully help form a better attitude in Chicago (when it comes to learning how to win and be a winner). It would be great if they could still get Handus.

Well I guess all the newspaper reports last season were wrong when they said his contract extension included a no trade for this season.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jun 29, 2007 -> 11:56 AM) Pffft... $300 is nothing compared to some that she was looking at. Aye aye aye... You are looking for the action digital camera's. I think they are called SLR's or something like that. My step-mom enjoys photography and she has a Cannon one that was relatively expensive (I don't recall the exact price but it has two different lenses that you can attach to it and I think it was something like 750). They live in a foresty type area and she takes shots of animals and that sort of stuff. But its the type of camera that you can click through and hold on and it will take picture after picture (you could use it at a baseball game and take action shots without any blur). It is an awesome camera as I've used it before taking some shots at a ball game and it works amazing. Edit: Apparently I should have read later on down the thread cause it looks like you realized it was an SLR.

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jul 2, 2007 -> 12:09 PM) Garland averaged about half an inning more a start under Ozzie than he did under Manuel and then suddenly in 2005 he cut his walk rate almost in half. He figured out how to pitch. Give Ozzie the credit if you will, I will give it to Garland. If Manuel was so bad, how do you give KW a pass on giving him a contract extension? I do think Manuel's time was up when he was canned but I think he was decent. I have a higher opinion of him than the Hawkeroo. I think its a shame that Manuel isn't managing in the majors. I think he's the perfect guy to work with a young team because he knows the game but is also willing to be patient with the youngsters. I think in Jon's case having a guy like Ozzie helped him out but that team turned into a more veteran team and kind of needed that edgier type of persona to put them over the top (they also got much better pitching).

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jul 2, 2007 -> 11:27 AM) KW took over after the 2000 season, Valentin was still a pretty good player. The Erstad/Garland trade happened after Erstad hit .258 with 9 homers and a pretty weak OBP. Garland was 22 years old, and its laughable you think Jerry Manuel ruined him. I think you buy Hawk's BS a little too much. I guess if your happy with 82 or 83 win seasons or finishing in 2nd or 3rd place almost every year, KW could be a hero. I like winning. Which to me means making the playoffs. I remember Garland even alluding to one of the big changes in his career occurred when Ozzie came in and actually showed confidence in Jon. Ozzie let Jon work himself out of jams and because of it developed into one of the better pitchers in baseball (also partially because Jon matured). In fact, one of the things that sometimes frustrates me is also the thing that I like most about Ozzie (his willingness to stick by his starters and show them the rope).

Do people just ignore the fact that Pods was at least the only person willing to call out the squad (when he first came back off the DL about 10 days ago). Say what you want about his injuries and the fact that by some he's over-rated (however, by most here, he's vastly under-rated) but at least he provides a positive attitude and plays his ass off everytime he's on the field.

Dodgers and white sox discussing possible deal
Chisoxfn replied to chisox2334's topic in Sox Baseball Headquarters
QUOTE(29thandPoplar @ Jul 2, 2007 -> 09:09 AM) The Dodgers are in the thick of things, a game or so out of 1st. While I can see them parting with prospects I cannot see them parting with pitchers who are already performing well for their squad. One thing about Ned Colletti is that he is completely willing to move prospects if he thinks the move will get his team to the promised land. You don't have to look any further than last off-season when he dealt a very good catching prospect (even though his value had decreased) in a deadline deal as well as Joel Guzman (3rd base prospect). Colletti is much like Williams in the sense that he isn't shy about giving up young players as he considers them valuable assets (whether in trade or if he uses them on the roster and the Dodgers already have a ton of young players contributing). I agree with you that you will not see Broxton moved, but Billingsley could very well be moveable (although they may prefer to move someone like Clayton Kershaw as moving him would not take away from the major league team). Betemeit and Kemp are two major league players that they would consider moving since neither are playing key roles. Heck, in a realistic situation if the Sox were interested in getting Betemeit as an additional piece to a near completed deal (already involving talent like Kemp, Kershaw, and/or one of there young shortstops) you could throw in a guy like Mackowiak or Cintron and convince the Dodgers to probably part with Betemeit. So basically you significantly upgrade the talent on your roster but the Dodgers don't ever take away from there major league roster (even though Betemeit is more talented than a guy like Mack, he is just as good of a bench player, especially based on Wilson's play this season in a minimized role). -
QUOTE(Jenks Heat @ Jul 2, 2007 -> 09:27 AM) If the Mets eat the contract, the Sox get nothing in return, a pure salary dump. For $5M a year KW could probably get a prospect that can produce. Thing is, he won't pay the contract and therefore would be very lucky to get anyone to take Contreras. Is he a FA after next season ala Garland? Does he have one or two years left on his deal...... Contreras has two years left on his deal, Vazquez has three and Garland has one. Kenny did a nice job so that none of the starters are coming off the books all in the same year (Freddy and Mark would have, but he made the off-season move to correct that). I think you are wrong about the eating of the contract and not getting prospects. Contreras is still a value based upon what other players got in free agency. His contract is small compared to Jason Marquis and despite him losing velocity he's a far more effective pitcher than guys like Marquis, plus the move to the national league will only make him better, imo.

Scott Boras wants a Nine-Game World Series!
Chisoxfn replied to RibbieRubarb's topic in The Diamond Club
I don't see how this makes Boras more money, unless he figures the additional revenue generated would lead to larger contracts being dulled out. -
His no trade clause is in fact in effect for this season, which is why the squad asked him if he would waive it. Tihs would be very interesting because I think Contreras to the Mets makes the most sense considering how much Minaya appears to be interested in him. I'm personally surprised they would be so willing to go out and acquire another aging starter signed for another few years (especially as they are watching Pedro continue to break down). Still if you could get any one top prospect in a package for Contreras you do it. Whether thats Pelfrey, Gomez, Milledge, etc.

Dodgers and white sox discussing possible deal
Chisoxfn replied to chisox2334's topic in Sox Baseball Headquarters
QUOTE(SoxFanForever @ Jul 2, 2007 -> 07:28 AM) It said we were interested in both, not asking for both. Why the heck would we ask for more to get Dye than we would Buehrle. I wonder how much validity there is to this rumor. I do think a major deal with Dye/Buehrle both going to the Dodgers is a legitimate possibility and I'd demand a package involving Kemp, Billingsley and Betemeit or a top flight prospect (is Blake Dewitt still looking like a pretty good middle infield prospect?). -
Buster Olney was on first take and basically said that every GM in the league are stunned at the White Sox unwillingness to sign Buehrle to the 4yr 56 million dollar deal. He claimed baseball insiders consider it a total bargain, especially considering the contract Zito had as well as other contracts that were given out to pitchers with far less success as Buehrle.

QUOTE(bogie @ Jul 1, 2007 -> 06:06 PM) I'm curious what the forum thinks he can get in the offseason if the Cubs don't end up signing him? Would someone give him Zito money and that many years ( 7 )? Is it a dream thinking the White Sox could put themselves in that mix? He should get Zito money if he wants it. He's also a better pitcher than Zito but unfortunately for Zambrano, Zito's performance this season may scare teams away from giving him quite that fact of a contract. Still, Carlos could very well get the largest contract in baseball history (given to a pitcher).

QUOTE(BearSox @ Jul 1, 2007 -> 08:42 PM) What maggs said, plus: Chris Carter to A+ Shnur to AA McCulloch to AA Sweeney to the show. Absolutely agree with Bear+Maggs. Those are complete no brainers.

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jul 1, 2007 -> 07:04 PM) I'm a big Boone fan as well but a loogy should never be untouchable. I take a top prospect for either Thornton or Logan. Hell, remember what Ron Villone commanded a few years ago. The bullpen should be "for sale".

QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jul 1, 2007 -> 05:59 PM) http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/print?id=660177&type=news There you go. I hope I never see a "you can't trade him because he's on the DL" post again, unless there was some kind of rule change since 2000. Well done. I have one remaining question, was this trade okay because technically he could have been pulled from the 15 day DL (as he had already been on the DL for 15 days at the time of the trade) or would it have been okay if he was placed on the DL a day ago. I assume it would have still been okay regardless of when you were placed on the DL but I was going to see if you knew for sure. Thanks for the info too.

I want Pods to have a healthy 2-3 week stretch before the deadline because I actually think he could get the Sox a quality lower level prospect that could turn into a valuable commodity 2-3 years down the road. Same for Erstad. And if you think I'm crazy, I'm just going to point out that both of these guys would be valuable bench players at the very least to a team that is in contention. I will say the same about Mack.

QUOTE(29thandPoplar @ Jul 1, 2007 -> 06:08 PM) Here is Gregor's article, it says 2011 - http://www.dailyherald.com/sports/whitesox.asp I was told it goes by years of service, not a rolling clock (days). A full credited year of major league service is 178 days. It would be worth getting clarification from an expert though, seeing as there is confusion on the matter. I am 99% positive that it is a rolling clock. That is unless things changed over the past year or two because I remember teams trying to move a guy earlier than the deadline in order to prevent the 10/5 rights that would be invoked by the time the official trade deadline occurred. Andruw Jones is someone who had this scenario happen to him mid-season.

QUOTE(greg775 @ Jul 1, 2007 -> 07:04 PM) Some people act like it's good business for the Sox to suck the next 2-3 or more years. You think the owners of the team are going to want to be horses*** while rebuilding? You try to put the best team out there every year. Trading Jenks would be moronic. There would be no closer and just another reason to lose more games. I'm just saying the worse thing the club could do is act as if it could sure fire compete and get caught in in between mode as that would eventually result in a long term losing period (I'm talking 5-10 years if you are lucky) as opposed to a 2 year rebuilding period if everything is done correctly. And you never know, the team could get competitive before hand. I also think it depends on what Kenny is thinking. I'd love to save this team but its going to be hard to do with as weak of a minor league system as the Sox have (as the only way super realistic way this team can compete is to go out and trade some guys for talent and than go on a signing spree this off-season but the problem is this club isn't going to go on a signing spree that would give the Sox a payroll similar to that of Boston/New York).
