  1. That 97 MPH pitch was not a slider. The next pitch he threw was more of a slider. The 97 MPH pitch was more of a cutter. Still, you don't see many 97 MPH cutters.
  2. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jun 27, 2006 -> 09:25 PM) the 2004 Marlins-Dodgers trade was about as pointless as you could get. The Dodgers got rid of Mota (who turned into s*** for the next 1.5 years with the Marlins,) their "heart and soul" Paul Lo Duca (traded away for scraps this past offseason,) and Juan Encarnacion (who was traded to the Dodgers in the offseason.) The Marlins got rid of Hee Flop Choi (who was acquired 8 months before that and had one hot month. Claimed off waivers last offseason,) Brad Penny (Pitched 3 games for them spanning less than 12 innings and even lost on a 2 hitter,) and Bill Murphy (who was later used to get Steve Finley.) The Marlins flopped, got nothing in return this past offseason for Mota, Lo Duca or Encarnacion. The Dodgers nearly missed the playoffs, and Paul Depodesta was fired after the 2005 season. Tell that to the Dodgers now, Brad Penny is the ace of there staff and is one of the best pitchers in the NL. The Marlins on the other hand got fleeced since they really didn't use much any of those guys with LoDuca going to New York (did they actually give up Gaby Hernandez for LoDuca, I was thinking Hernandez was part of the Delgado deal???), Encarnacion leaving, and well we know Mota really blew up (Mota was more of a throw in as opposed to the key cog to get Hanley Ramirez, imo). They also got some draft picks eventually for Steve Finley (IIRC). That was a great trade for the Dodgers and I think anyone in the org would say that as well, just watch what Penny is doing.

Superman was fanf***ingtastic. Highly recommend it. Usually when I see this really late night movies I"m naer asleep when its over, not with this movie.
  4. QUOTE(tigerfan @ Jun 27, 2006 -> 07:11 PM) If you ask me, there's no way Minnesota comes close to us. Right now they're still 11 games back, even though they've been hot. So even if we do fall into 2nd at some point, I'm not too worried. Pending the Twins/Dodger agme tonight, the Sox and Tigers are 10-1 in there last 11 and if the Twins win tonight they would also be 10-1 in there last 11. The Royals entering today's game were even 7-3 in there last 10. How bout that central division
  5. QUOTE(danman31 @ Jun 27, 2006 -> 07:45 PM) Yeah Keller is not a world class keeper, that's pretty clear. The US soccer propaganda made him sound way better (Lalas saying best keeper in the world? Puh-lease!). However, it's going to be very hard for Howard to be the best keeper in US history IMO. Brad Friedel has been playing in England for a while and even won Premier League goalie of the year in 02/03. Right now, he's the best US keeper ever, and I don't think Tim Howard is good enough to take that away from him. Sidenote: Not related to this World Cup specifically, but I found a website that has a lot of information on American soccer players playing abroad. Yanks Abroad has player profiles and a list of players playing overseas and even has info on some notable guys playing in MLS. I was reading up and was surprised to see the amount of guys, especially young players, playing in Europe. The future may be as promising as advertised. After you look at this site you'll probably be wondering why there are more than 2 or 3 MLS guys on the nats' roster. Plus Friedel was amazing for the US in the 2002 World Cup
  6. QUOTE(Jimbo @ Jun 27, 2006 -> 06:55 PM) you are not going to win that fight over here buddy. Allen soudns like baba booey from the howard stern show. I laugh at his ignorance every night. I actually enjoy listening to him. Not always great with his words, but he makes me laugh and in general seems to like what he's doing. Plus he's not boring. Caught the last two innings and that young kid hit a bomb for his 1st career hr. RObertson pitched very well in a game that could have been much closer if the Astros didn't play s*** defense behind the Rocket. Tiggies keep on winning and have a shot at sweeping the homestand with a win tomorrow against the Stros.
  7. Thome is looking much better at the plate tonight, imo. He's taking the close pitches and even taking some strikes (that aren't good hitters pitches). I think he's close to getting back on a tear.
  8. QUOTE(aboz56 @ Jun 27, 2006 -> 04:33 PM) FYI Zach Duke will pitch Thursday in place of Oliver Perez who the Pirates moved to the bullpen. Duke will move up a day and pitch on normal rest. In terms of scheduling for Saturday's game against the Tigers (Pirates vs. Tigers) they have yet to announce there starter, but we will be seeing two of there best (in Snell tonight who we knocked around but only got 3 against and Duke on Thursday when he goes up against Count and his 16 game win streak).
  9. The Steelers will probably win, but the Sox truly played like a team (Than again so did the Steelers).
  10. QUOTE(Soxbadger @ Jun 27, 2006 -> 02:04 PM) The Aussie player appears to move his shoulder in the replay in an attempt to trip the player. It was not a bad call, it may have been a questionable call. Atleast thats what I saw. Was it necessarily a foul, no, but the player didn't get near the ball and put himself in a position that the Italy player (if he does things right) would be able to draw the foul and thats exactly what he did. You can't put yourself in that position in soccer when your in the box.
  11. QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jun 27, 2006 -> 01:46 PM) I didn't see the Ghana/US post-game so I don't know about that but after the Czech/US he was making an uber amount of excuses and after the Italian game, he was gushing over how much they improved and how they will surely beat Ghana. Whataver, I hate Wynalda. Ya, he went from making excuses to flat out ripping the US team to shreds following the Ghana game. He was dead on too. He was sick of hearing excuses from Arena and called for the ouster of Arena. He was pretty harsh and Arena was being interviewed later on and pretty much was asked pointedly about the callings for his firing by the ESPN commentators (since they are former US soccer stars). Lalas was awesome and his commentary where he would go off on Rynalda was great. Both really spoke there minds and they differed in opinions from time to time and it made great TV. I've been watching most of the games as I get to wake up to them out here on the West Coast and than catch WC live. I also like the Euro analyst they've had on because you get a totally different perspective of things, since they won't have the US bias that our guys obviously will have. We played fantastic against Italy, one of the best teams in this tourney so I see no reason why you shouldnt' be optimistic. The team was completely jobbed by s***ty officiating yet stuck in, played a man down and got a tie. It was a very impressive and gutsy performance, one in which Donovan actually showed up. How was anyone supposed to know that Donovan would take a completely dive, our coach would be completely inept, and that Reyna (a so called veteran) would make rookie mistakes and f*** our chances. Its not like Ghana outplayed us, we had a s***ty call in the box and a dumbass play by Reyna aside from that the US didn't play bad against Ghana. The Czech game was a complete f***ing joke though. Oh and Keller didn't step up and shine like one of the better goalies in the world is supposed to.
  12. QUOTE(zygoat @ Jun 27, 2006 -> 01:37 PM) wasnt navarro suppose to be the stud prospect in that big unit trade?? He hasnt done anything and now he is stuck with one of the most losingest teams ever year (that division is nails with yanks, bosoxs, and diamondbacks) The Dodgers pried him from the Yanks when they got involved in the Shawn Green trade (yes the Big Unit trade). They insisted on getting him and finally got him once that deal went through (Javier was supposed to be headed to the Dodgers, but than he wouldn't go, so he stayed in Arizona.
  13. QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jun 27, 2006 -> 01:02 PM) Yeah, and Eric Wynalda has been dead on with everything he's said this World Cup. The guy has no business anayzing anything. I love Wynalda. He called up Arena's and Donovan and anyone else that sucked for the US. I also loved him and Lalas arguing from time to time (Lalas is the man too). QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jun 27, 2006 -> 01:13 PM) No, I'm not, but for a soccer "legend" in the US, he sure as heck complains a lot and makes a lot of biased/incorrest/opinionated comments. Penalty? Rynalda didn't necessarily call it a penalty. He more so said the Aussie player made a huge mistake and the Italian player took advantage of it and did what was necessary to give the call. He basically said you have to tip your hat to the Italian player for doing so and obviously the Aussie player made a mistake (since it was a dumb slide tackle attempt inside the box).
  14. Interesting move. The Dodgers need help in the rotation and Hendrickson is a pretty damn solid lefty who should be better in the NL. Plus Seo has really struggled with the Dodgers, but he's decent enough that he should help the Rays. Navarro fell out of love in LA, but he's still pretty talented and has a better long term future than Toby Hall (is Hall going to get many starts when the Dodgers have Martin doing a pretty damn good job??). This is a really good move by the Rays since Seo career wise is just as good as Hendrickson (plus a bit younger) and Navarro is a pretty good catching prospect (just the Dodgers could afford to give him up with Martin really looking legit). Dodgers needed a starter and Hendy is hot this year while the Rays get some pretty good help. I actually think the Dodgers overpaid a bit, but when you need a starter you need a starter.
  15. QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Jun 27, 2006 -> 11:49 AM) well, he's obviously not that incredible a talent, or he wouldnt bounce everywhere. however, i wouldnt mind getting a young arm back, regardless. He's very talented, the problem is he isn't ready to pitch at the major league level (nor should be considering he was coming from A ball). Thats why he wouldn't really stick on a team like the Rangers that finds themselves in the thick of the race. However, a team like the Royals or some other s*** team would be stupid not to take a chance on an arm like his and just live with the losses (its not like there other guys are any better).
  16. QUOTE(ZoomSlowik @ Jun 27, 2006 -> 09:44 AM) It looks like they keep trying to play an offside trap at mid-field. Probably not too smart against a team like Brazil. Yep, plus I think Ghana is gassed. They played a very good 75-78 minutes of soccer.
  17. Ghana has copmletely outplayed Brazil for 72 minutes but Brazil has gotten 2 goals (1 was a bulls*** goal where the player was offsides) and Ghana blew an easy goal. Brazil's experiene and a little luck is the only reason they are gonna get past a Ghana team that played fantastic.
  18. If I edited the wrong post, my mistake, that would have been on accident. I was editing the stuff on the Tigers. In fact, what happened was you must have reposted at the same time I was making my edit so I erased over the post you had with the pitching matchups. Go for it and repost the matchups . I just wanted to make sure the city stuff came to an end and we got back to discussing the Sox and Tigers
  19. QUOTE(Rex Hudler @ Jun 26, 2006 -> 07:22 PM) Sure he will. He'll get suspended for 5-10 games (more likely 5 depending on what was said more than what was done). He's employed by the Colorado Rockies. His "owner" isn't really an issue. Apparently he was a pretty firey player too. I have no idea the type of manager he is, but the odds of him getting fired for this is slim to none, imo. Its not like he ever touched the ump. Sure he went on a tirade, but I'm also sure it deflected some of the angst with whatever has been going on with his team.
  20. Friendly admin reminder to all members of this thread, enough with the city bashing. Lets move on and discuss the teams. This is a Tigers thread so its cool to have Tiger fans here, but I need to reiterate, those Tiger fans better stay respectful. We encourage friendly and healthy debate amongst posters of other teams (such as the Tigers) but that doesn't mean a Tiger fan will get the benefit of the doubt like a Sox fan will (simply because this is a Sox site first and foremost). Anyway I think the Tigers are a damn good ball club and I have no doubt if the opportunity to make a move presents itself that they will try to do so. There is no guarantee said move puts them over the top, but Ilitch is willing to pony up the dough. Than again, Kenny was willing to pony up some stuff last year but coudln't get anything done just because a lot of teams were still around. Who knows if that will be the case this year or not. I do think the one thing going for the Sox is that there pitchers don't have as much of a history of fading in the 2nd half of the season, but the TIgers pitchers (most of them are young) so its really hard to look at any potential trends they have shown since they are still developing. Of course I do think there is a good chance someone like Verlander would tire just due to the total innings he'll be throwing compared to his previous inning totals. But that doesn't mean anything if the Sox can't get there 4th and 5th guys back on a roll (Vazy/Garland/Garcia).
  21. Wow, Swiss were tremendous defensively, outplayed Ukraine, but just can't score. Eliminated without ever giving up a goal in this years world cup.
  22. Wow, that was awesome.
  23. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Jun 26, 2006 -> 10:08 AM) Wait till they try that crap on England. The premiership is probably the most physical league in Europe. England goes through to the semis is my prediction. I sure as hell hope they do. I never root for England (the only team I have blood in that I don't root for; I'm a quarter English) but after that display Portugal put up against my Dutchies, well kick some ass Beckham and company
  24. Forza Italy Oh that Dutch game yesterday was bulls***. Screw the Portugese players and there dirty ways.
  25. I think part of it also stems from Thome not being as selective. He seems to be swinging at a lot more first pitches lately and I know I've heard him say before, that when he's at his best, he's really selective waiting for his pitch.
