  1. QUOTE(sircaffey @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 02:17 PM) If Frank is done with the White Sox, KGJ would be a stellar replacement in terms of marketability. Griffey is an attraction... A healthy Griffey is 1000 times more marketable than Frank. Frank was amazing in his hay-day, but if Griffey gets rolling again (and it looks like he is and gets back in a major market)....he will once again be one of the more marketable players in all of baseball. Frank was never really that. He was pretty damn amazing in the 90's, but marketablity wise (aside from Big Hurt Baseball the video game) he doesn't even come close to KGJ. Also as far as Young goes, right now I think if you asked a team who they'd want of all the Sox ofer's, Chris Young would be #1 on most of those list. A team couldn't go wrong with any of them (I think all 3 have the chance to be very good players), but Young has the best chance to be a special player (I think next on that list would be Sweeney, simply because he has such a sweet stroke and its so low maintenance).
  2. QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 01:54 PM) 1)You seem wayyyyyyyyyy to caught up on any prospect. If the White Sox gave up their worst prospect in the system, you would say it was a bad move. I was kind of hoping Brandon McCarthy flat out was cut just so we wouldn't have to hear you make several threads about not trading him. We're trying to win now. This is arguably our best year in franchise history. Wen that's the case, you have to go for it. 2)Young is not touted more than Sweeney or Anderson. He's a very good prospect, but we have OF depth in the organization. Is Young going to help us win the World Series this year? No. Is he even going to help us next year? No. That's why you do the move. 3)Griffey would be playing DH most of the time with some stints in CF. Ozzie isn't that stupid and neither is Kenny. And Griffey is a way better hitter than Everett. He's less streaky and he also could hit from the left side which sadly Everett can't. 4)Who would you have more confidence in at the plate in the playoffs for getting a key hit. Griffey or Everett?? I'd certainly take Griffey any day. 5)Cincy would pay 4.5 million a year until his contract is up. We'd take care of the deferred part which is only about 4 million. 4 million usually isn't the difference between making the playoffs or not. I wouldn't care about the deferred part. I'm sure JR and the ownership doesn't mind that either. Almost all great hitters have deferred cash. Manny, Vlad Griffey. Even A-Rod had that before he got traded to NY. Deferred cash isn't a problem. Upside wise, Young has more than any OFer in the Sox system and almost every other system for that matter. Not saying I wouldn't make the trade though cause I think a healthy Griffey makes this team a whole lot stronger.
  3. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 01:42 PM) They would need one more standup defenseman, IMO. I'd agree with that. I think the big problem with the Hawks for a long while was they didn't have the good defenseman. At least when I would watch (and I'm not expert), but you'd see them get killed in TOP which isn't necessarily all defense, but it starts with the defense and than you need players who are can control the puck and pass. Still, I think the Hawks have like 19 mill in cap. Now they obviously won't cap themselves out, but they could realistically spend like 12-14 mill more, putting them in the 33-35 mill range. So if they go max with Habi and it seems thats the case...7.8 mill and than 5 mill for Modano, they definately have enough to grab one or two guys, but obviously not big name players (who, don't ask me, I'm not good enough to know that sort of stuff). They'd definately be pushing it though, especially since I think I read a few of you say the Hawks could use a couple more forward/wing players.
  4. QUOTE(Mr. Showtime @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 11:55 AM) Boston signed Leech. Talk is the Hawks and Boston have 4 year deals on the table worth 20 million. Would the Hawks have enough for Modano and Havi?
  5. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 11:54 AM) Rumor has it that Center Ice might be free this season. Might. And SF1, WTF are you talking about. Kovalev? Yeah, that's exactly what we need, more soft players to play around Ruutu and (later) Bolland. Good "leadership", huh? :rolly If so, omg, they may just win me into hockey. I'd be catching Hawks games for a full season (Hell I'd see more games than you locals, lol).
  6. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 12:24 PM) I actually had an idea if there were going to be a bunch of people for a tailgate. We could get there early and see if we can get a softball game together at Armour park. It could be something fun to do annually as a Soxtalk gathering. Thoughts? Since its a really early start, maybe we could even get something together for after the game. I'm game for it at any time though.
  7. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 12:07 PM) How has BMac's changeup been looking lately (for anyone who's seen him)? That was the pitch he was missing when he was in the big leagues earlier this year. Is there talk yet about having him work on a cutter in the offseason? I got a piece due up tonight. Its all edited, just have some tidbits to add in regards to his changeup (there was a reason he wasn't throwing it for a bit) as well as a new pitch he's throwing.
  8. I sure hope so. I'll sign autographs for everyone...prices start at 5 bucks for mine or 5 bucks for Mike's, but for 7.50 you could get both of ours
  9. QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 10:55 AM) Did I miss something? A lot of stuff was strategically deleted. EDIT: Methinks someone is trying to save serious face. I cleared all the crap out.
  10. QUOTE(Steff @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 10:49 AM) You got that right... "Watch out!!!!... Oh s***.. I think I just hit the car... " Whoa...Whoa...Whoa That was Mike
  11. QUOTE(Randar68 @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 10:49 AM) Sure, shoot me an e-mail. You still have my address? Alright will do. I'll send it in a day or two (were still finishing up the questions and stuff).
  12. QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 10:46 AM) His ERA is in the high 5's....pass. QUESTION: If Griffey was acquired, why not just put him in the 3 spot and at DH and keep the outfield intact? Thats what I think would happen. He would ocassionally spell the OF's though.
  13. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 10:48 AM) Having seen your "arm" first hand, all I want to know is if it is possible to get a dead arm when not being a pitcher? Making fun of me....next time I'll actually throw. Of course I can't even come close to my hay days. I always relive my glory years.
  14. QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 2, 2005 -> 08:15 PM) Personally, I always thought the dead arm period was just an excuse used whenever a pitcher is having a poor stretch of game. Kinda like loser's limp and Kerry Wood. As a former pitcher (not a good one at that), I can definately tell you there is such thing as a dead arm period. It could of just been because I sucked, but I remember going through a time where you wouldn't have the pop on your fastball (not that I really had much pop) but than you'd kind of get through it and it would come back. I'm sure it happens to big leaguers, but I consider the dead arm solely in regards to the FB, but I guess it could have an effect with your breaking pitches as well. Of course it typically happens during spring training or early in the season or thats when it seems to happen. I also think it shows up a bit later in the season.
  15. QUOTE(YASNY @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 10:06 AM) Adkins get a fillin start. Excuse me while I go throw up :puke Than again, it should be well known that I can't stand Adkins. I hope he does well though and that the reason he stunk so much in Charlotte was because he was starting. Still, Its probably what the Sox would do, cause I'm guessing they'll stick with Brandon till September and let him continue working on what he's been doing.
  16. OMG...to have a goalie of this caliber....
  17. In terms of the deferred portion of the contract. I remember this being a debated issue last year and pretty much whenever Griffey's name comes up. Basically put, Steff (I'm pretty sure it was her) and a few others brought up the new CBA contract and mentioned how any player dealt would no longer have a deferred deal and that basically all deferred amounts become due at the time of the trade. I think thats the case unless the player agrees to continue with the deferred aspect of the contract and in that case you need to get approval from the players union. IIRC thats how it worked out in the Arod deal, because I think he had some portion of his contract which was deferred.
  18. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 10:13 AM) He wont make it all the way to us. There are too many large budget teams that would need a CF or a DH. SOrry guys, not gonna happen. I'm still convinced he'll slide through waivers. No one is going to straight up take on that contract. If Jerry got really ballsy I could see him doing it (knowing that the Reds would accept that and KW would still really have to sell the potential of keeping a guy like Chris Young (cause basically the Sox are dealing Young and Rogo for 4.5 mill a year for the remainder of Griffs contract).
  19. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 10:12 AM) Is this a deferred contract. OMG this is like a JR dream. I'm pretty sure the Reds would pick up the deferred portion. I can't see the Sox footing the bill for all the deferred amounts that were due to him prior to joining the Sox (if it were to happen).
  20. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 10:08 AM) I agree it should not be called chili, because mine blows that s*** out of the water. But eaten properly, it is the s***. Skyline chili is amazing. And it has cinnamon in it, not chocolate, you must have gone to the wrong place. Its the one thing that I really remember about Cincy when I went there a few years back. Good chili. My dad and I had never heard of it, but we kept seeing the places all over and finally decided to give er a try. Good stuff, and its the only time I've ever had Spaghetti Chili. Not as spicy as I'd prefer, but still good.
  21. QUOTE(Mr. Showtime @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 09:59 AM) You could be correct, but I could've sworn you start out in whatever league you are in first. No, your right Ian. He'd have to pass through the NL first. It goes by the league the player is in and than to the other league.
  22. QUOTE(JimH @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 09:56 AM) Agree completely. We don't know the details, but insider baseball people often say the average baseball fan would be shocked to know who actually clears waivers. I doubt this will happen though. If Cincinnati ownership squashed it at the deadline, I'm not sure why they'd change their minds a week later. I remember last year Peter Gammons or Jayson Stark or Kurjian released a list of all the guys that cleared waivers. It was definately really interesting to see. 1st off everyone gets put on waivers (its just something you do to give you flexibility) and a lot of pretty good players pass through (mainly guys with long term deals). For example, a guy like Billy Wagner would never get close to making it to the Sox cause some competitor would take on his contract in a heartbeat (heck I don't know if he'd make it out of the NL).
  23. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 09:51 AM) After reading just the first post, I have this to say: FUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Damn it, that was such a sweet ass deal. Rogowski is fringe and Young is gonna be good, but damn. DAMN DAMN DAMN! (And I don't want Burroughs) Rogowski will be a pretty solid player, just doesn't have star status as a prospect. Would be a good deal for the Reds simply because they'd unload the contract for two guys that I feel will be starting everyday players at their respected positions, one of which has a chance to be an upper echelon starter at his position (Chris Young). Plus financially it makes too much sense for the Reds. They need to get rid of these awful contracts so they can start developing their players and be able to sign them to deals (ala the Tribe and even Sox to a lesser extent) and slowly yet surely, they'll have themselves a nucleus. They are a long ways off though, but Willy Mo is definately one of those guys.
  24. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 09:49 AM) damn, beat me to it. Anthrax always has some sweet transaction ideas......... And trust me, he's available. The Angels love Itzuris.
  25. QUOTE(Mr. Showtime @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 09:44 AM) I don't think anyone in the NL would do it. Boston or NY in the AL could. That contract is going to scare people off. Had they traded Manny, I could see it, but not right now. See with Walker, he only had to go through the NL, not many teams had a chance to grab him. Put the Angels in as a potential sleeper. Steve Finley is killing them offensively in CF and they have been looking long and hard for a DH but appeared to fall short of getting Mike Sweeney (I don't think talks ever got much past the preliminary stage). Moreno has the money.
