  1. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 10, 2005 -> 06:32 PM) Who is Steff having fired this time?

QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Aug 10, 2005 -> 06:10 PM) Me too. I thought after the first 2 years I could just cruise which was the exact opposite. Junior year is an outlier in my GPA. Ya, I got lucky, I had real strong SAT scores and shockingly (well to those that give me crap for my grammar and spelling) I wrote a really strong essay (GPA wasn't that bad though, like 3.2) so I got into every school but one I applied to (the one I didn't get into was one my mom kept telling me to apply to so finally I just said fine just to make her happy). But I was a total lazy ass in high school with the belief I'd turn it on when I started taking classes that interested me. The only thing I cared about in high school when it came to school was getting good enough grades to get into a decent college.
  3. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 10, 2005 -> 06:27 PM) Good luck Jas! Keep us up on where you end up. Oh trust me, if I get out to Chicago...Sox tix on me the first time I'm out there

QUOTE(ChiSoxyGirl @ Aug 10, 2005 -> 04:04 PM) I actually committed the unforgiveable sin of committing to a college that I'd never visted (in a state I'd never visited). My parents thought I was nuts, but it turned out well. I did the same. I went to my freshmen orientation and was like ahhh so this is where Fullerton is (kind of pathetic, its only 20 minutes from my place and I'd never been).
  5. QUOTE(3 BeWareTheNewSox 5 @ Aug 10, 2005 -> 03:56 PM) Congrats, just wondering, what year in college are you in? This will be my final year coming up. Its my 5th year, but I'm doubling in finance and accounting. By the way, thanks for the kind words everyone
  6. Awesome news Mike. I know you guys have been looking hard and I'm happy you guys were able to find a place you like. All the best to you and once again congrats!!!!

QUOTE(MnSoxFan @ Aug 10, 2005 -> 02:05 PM) Heck with the best arms stuff, I want the best pitcher. Wood has a great arm, Buehrle is a great pitcher, who do you want? Give me Haigwood over a guy like Lumsden 8 times out of 10. I tend to think Lummy is also a good pitcher. I don't consider him a thrower, but a pitcher. Problem is its really hard to say considering his health issues. However, I'm with you 100%, I'm a fan of pitchers as opposed to throwers, although its nice when you get a combination of both (which is what Jenks is starting to look like). I'm excited about the progress Haig is making and I'm glad he's going to get quite a few more starts in Bham this year so if he does make the jump to AAA at the start of next season he won't be as rushed as Bmac was.
  8. I went to lunch around 12:30 and had some mexican food (awesome beef burrito). What made it best was got to the place, sit down and look up and see the Sox game on entering the bottom of the 9th tied at 1. Then my buddy from work shows up and sits down (he's a huge Yankee fan) and how sweet it was to see him squirm and argue with me how Uribe was out at the plate. Than he kept telling me how the Yanks were gonna make the playoffs and I laughed. It was great. Than went back to work for like an hour and a half, and the day was over (had two exit interviews for work and was able to leave and they let me book it as a full 8hr day).
  9. QUOTE(Steff @ Aug 10, 2005 -> 02:54 PM) Thought you were looking into firms in Chicago Jason..? Ya, this firm was founded in Chicago so I have that option (they have locations throughout the US as well as international officies). I talked to them about it and they basically said if your ever interested in trasnferring there they are more than willing to accomadate for me. So I think next week I'm gonna take out the real estate section of the paper (I'm assuming theres on in the trib/suntimes) and start looking hard and thinking these next couple months. Right now I'm split on staying here versus moving away. The two things that kill me is moving away from my friends and family as well as surviving the winter. As long as I could take a train during the winter (and drive as little as possible) I think I could survive
  10. Just had to sound off. I got one more year of being a part time worker now. The internship was an awesome experience and I got an offer extended today to join the company as an associate when I graduate. Anyway I hope others who had internships (I think I remember seeing a few posts earlier in the year) enjoyed theres as much as I enjoyed mine. And for those few people I saw interested in accounting, if you ever got any questions feel free to drop me a PM (I can semi explain some of the stuff and the different fields you can go into with a CPA and all that good stuff). I also have learned what exactly an auditor at a public accounting firm doesr (thats what I've been doing the past couple months).

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Aug 8, 2005 -> 06:38 PM) Junior year sucks. Enjoy. Ya, my grades went to hell that year...classes got tougher and I got lazier.

QUOTE(KJean @ Aug 9, 2005 -> 08:46 PM) Woooah, I'm surprised there's quite a few Accounting/Finance majors here. Most of the time when people find out what I'm majoring in they gasp loudly and ask, "why the hell are you doing that?" Umm...because I want to! I get that all the time, but quite frankly there are so many opportunities. For me the only reason I'm doing finance is because I need 150 units to meet the requirements for the CPA exam in my state. However, job market is unbelievably strong for accountants.

  14. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Aug 9, 2005 -> 07:57 PM) I know. I like the in-state games. Not quite the same thing as basketball, but still nifty. In basketball I'm worried about the in-state games. NIU, ISU, Drake...they all seem to be capable and do knock the Hawks off from time to time. Especially the Clones.
  15. QUOTE(Steff @ Aug 10, 2005 -> 05:57 AM) Giambi didn't go in front of the world and swear with his right hand that he never took steroids... period. I can't help but root for Giambi (and I hate rooting for anyone on the Yankees) but he handled the entire situation so classy.
  16. QUOTE(TimB @ Aug 10, 2005 -> 06:19 AM) Hi everyone, I'm new to the board, so I apologize if this has been posted elsewhere. I was listening to Mike and Mike this morning and Jason Stark was filling in for Golic. When asked about Griffey moving to the White Sox, here's what he had to say: 1) Trade was probably not as close to being completed as Williams has eluded to. Apparently neither Griffey or his agent were asked whether they would wave the no trade clause 2) It'll be tough to claim him on waivers since the original deal included minor leaguers. Apparently minor league talent is tough to move through waivers since other teams can snatch them prior to the Reds. This is news to me. I didn't realize trades during this period required both parties to move their players through the waiver wire, but that was in essence what he was saying. Bottom line, Starks does not believe Griffey will be going anywhere. Stark rides the short-bus, because minor leaguers not listed on the 40 man rostere don't have to clear waivers. So Chris Young and quite a few of the Sox top prospects would be able to get offered in deals without having to clear waivers. Brandon McCarthy, however, will not be traded.
  17. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Aug 10, 2005 -> 05:08 AM) If Everett gets going again, put him in the #5 hole, that will definitely bring some balance to the lineup. I want Rowand in the 3 hole and Timo back on the bench.
  18. Offenses hit slumps, but thus far the club is still playing a little over .500 ball since the break and I think of it as quite the positive considering the woeful hitting as of late. Now lets take the rubber game today.

QUOTE(Randar68 @ Aug 10, 2005 -> 09:02 AM) Was extremely impressed with Lumsden. I think his curve is on-par with Gio and he throws much harder than Gio. We'll have to see if he can get healthy, but he is, IMO, the most talented lefty in the system. Last season I saw him hitting 95 and dropping an absolutely unhittable curve on guys. This was still as he was getting over his dead-arm period. I didn't see enough of him to have a great feel for control or pitching instincts, though. Again, I like Gio a lot, but IMO, Lumsden and Whisler are the best LH'd arms in the system followed by Gio and Haigwood. Pitching instincts, mechanical consistency and control are on Haig and Gio's side, but pure talent and stuff has to go to the first 2, IMO. I'm starting to wonder if we'll even see Lummy this year. I'm trying to get an update on his status cause Lumsden is a guy that has some of the best stuff of any pitcher in the system. I think him and Sean Tracey have the best arms (from the left and right side) in the organization. We'll just have to see what happens. Lummy is also a very heady pitcher and has extroardinary mound presence.

QUOTE(Randar68 @ Aug 10, 2005 -> 06:47 AM) Haig has and never will hit mid-90's... BA also said Brian Miller had the best RH power arm in the system... And referred to it as "easy heat"....LMAO Oh and Jesse Foppert consistently hits the upper 90's, ie 99. Yet in the big leagues he tops out at 93. BA is a great publication, but a lot of the velocities that they report are laughable. And from what I know, Haigwood tops out at the very low 90's, but usually pitches in the upper 80's.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Aug 10, 2005 -> 03:48 AM) Haigwood's having a very B-Mac like 2004, where he's jumped to a higher level and just gotten better. Hopefully he can stay away from the injuries that caused him to miss a lot of action so far in his minor league career. Would I call him our best pitching prospect though? He'd have to keep pitching the way he has probably for the rest of the season, but I think after McCarthy, people are probably going to rate Gio a little higher (even though he's struggled with his ERA at Winston - Salem). His only injuries weren't arm related IIRC. I always confuse him and Rodriguez, but IIRC Ryan Rodriguez had the arm/shoulder injury that forced him out a full season while Haigwood had a knee injury and is completely over it. Like Cerb referenced earlier, when we talked to him last season around this time he said he had just started feeling 100%. He also mentioned how he was gaining a lot of confidence in his changeup. It seems to be a pitch that the Sox organization is doing a very good job teaching. That and the cutter and I think both are very good pitches.

QUOTE(whitesox61382 @ Aug 9, 2005 -> 08:01 PM) Thanks for the replies. It is good to see that Haigwood is quietly flying under the radar and putting together a solid season. I am also not giving up complete hope on either Malone or Honel. I think that Malone can be an effective lefty reliever, and will probably get a shot at some point if he stays healthy. Another guy who I think can be a real sleeper is Rodriguez. I have noticed that he has pitched very well and been very consistant over the past month plus. I remember that he had a plus arm from the left side before his injury, and it appears that he is starting to regain his stuff if the numbers are any indication. On the whole, it appears that the Sox system is on the way up again and could be in the top 10 by the end of the season. With Malone, from what I was told is they moved him to the pen to simply limit his innings because the Sox want to be extra careful with his arm. I was told they are very pleased with his progress this season (coming back from injury) and that he is expected to rejoin the rotation again next year (after starting for roughly half of the season IIRC). Haigwood is a guy I like a whole lot. Awesome writeup on him Rex, as always appreciate your insights.

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Aug 9, 2005 -> 12:17 PM) Collaro's OBP was .304 entering the day.... There's not many outfielders not named Timo Perez who can make that work on the Major League level. But he also has the most power potential of any prospect in the system (well aside from Chris Young). Collaro has a long way to go and there are definately some issues with his swing, but I think in general this has to be considered a promising season. He's hitting for power and his average hasn't been awful. He's also shortened his swing a bit, but still needs to cut his k's, and improve on his walk totals.
  24. He is on the roster, but from what I'm told he will not play this year.
  25. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Aug 9, 2005 -> 10:50 AM) Jason and I offer this, and trust me it does help.... If you find yourself procrastinating and you know you have a big paper coming up, just tell us and we'll suspend you for however long from the site to keep you from blowing time on here. We'll make sure to allow ya back, but it comes in handy if you can't pull yourself away. Ya, I remember you telling me about that so I went with it and it made a lot of sense. Worked great. We know I love procrastinating, but even than I got straight A's this past semester...WOOT. Thats right, barely got a 3.0 in high school too...those were the days I was a true slacker.
