QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 10:46 AM) His ERA is in the high 5's....pass. QUESTION: If Griffey was acquired, why not just put him in the 3 spot and at DH and keep the outfield intact? Thats what I think would happen. He would ocassionally spell the OF's though.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 10:48 AM) Having seen your "arm" first hand, all I want to know is if it is possible to get a dead arm when not being a pitcher? Making fun of me....next time I'll actually throw. Of course I can't even come close to my hay days. I always relive my glory years.
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 2, 2005 -> 08:15 PM) Personally, I always thought the dead arm period was just an excuse used whenever a pitcher is having a poor stretch of game. Kinda like loser's limp and Kerry Wood. As a former pitcher (not a good one at that), I can definately tell you there is such thing as a dead arm period. It could of just been because I sucked, but I remember going through a time where you wouldn't have the pop on your fastball (not that I really had much pop) but than you'd kind of get through it and it would come back. I'm sure it happens to big leaguers, but I consider the dead arm solely in regards to the FB, but I guess it could have an effect with your breaking pitches as well. Of course it typically happens during spring training or early in the season or thats when it seems to happen. I also think it shows up a bit later in the season.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 10:06 AM) Adkins get a fillin start. Excuse me while I go throw up :puke Than again, it should be well known that I can't stand Adkins. I hope he does well though and that the reason he stunk so much in Charlotte was because he was starting. Still, Its probably what the Sox would do, cause I'm guessing they'll stick with Brandon till September and let him continue working on what he's been doing.

OMG...to have a goalie of this caliber.... -
In terms of the deferred portion of the contract. I remember this being a debated issue last year and pretty much whenever Griffey's name comes up. Basically put, Steff (I'm pretty sure it was her) and a few others brought up the new CBA contract and mentioned how any player dealt would no longer have a deferred deal and that basically all deferred amounts become due at the time of the trade. I think thats the case unless the player agrees to continue with the deferred aspect of the contract and in that case you need to get approval from the players union. IIRC thats how it worked out in the Arod deal, because I think he had some portion of his contract which was deferred.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 10:13 AM) He wont make it all the way to us. There are too many large budget teams that would need a CF or a DH. SOrry guys, not gonna happen. I'm still convinced he'll slide through waivers. No one is going to straight up take on that contract. If Jerry got really ballsy I could see him doing it (knowing that the Reds would accept that and KW would still really have to sell the potential of keeping a guy like Chris Young (cause basically the Sox are dealing Young and Rogo for 4.5 mill a year for the remainder of Griffs contract).
-
QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 10:12 AM) Is this a deferred contract. OMG this is like a JR dream. I'm pretty sure the Reds would pick up the deferred portion. I can't see the Sox footing the bill for all the deferred amounts that were due to him prior to joining the Sox (if it were to happen).

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 10:08 AM) I agree it should not be called chili, because mine blows that s*** out of the water. But eaten properly, it is the s***. Skyline chili is amazing. And it has cinnamon in it, not chocolate, you must have gone to the wrong place. Its the one thing that I really remember about Cincy when I went there a few years back. Good chili. My dad and I had never heard of it, but we kept seeing the places all over and finally decided to give er a try. Good stuff, and its the only time I've ever had Spaghetti Chili. Not as spicy as I'd prefer, but still good.

QUOTE(Mr. Showtime @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 09:59 AM) You could be correct, but I could've sworn you start out in whatever league you are in first. No, your right Ian. He'd have to pass through the NL first. It goes by the league the player is in and than to the other league.
-
QUOTE(JimH @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 09:56 AM) Agree completely. We don't know the details, but insider baseball people often say the average baseball fan would be shocked to know who actually clears waivers. I doubt this will happen though. If Cincinnati ownership squashed it at the deadline, I'm not sure why they'd change their minds a week later. I remember last year Peter Gammons or Jayson Stark or Kurjian released a list of all the guys that cleared waivers. It was definately really interesting to see. 1st off everyone gets put on waivers (its just something you do to give you flexibility) and a lot of pretty good players pass through (mainly guys with long term deals). For example, a guy like Billy Wagner would never get close to making it to the Sox cause some competitor would take on his contract in a heartbeat (heck I don't know if he'd make it out of the NL).

QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 09:51 AM) After reading just the first post, I have this to say: FUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Damn it, that was such a sweet ass deal. Rogowski is fringe and Young is gonna be good, but damn. DAMN DAMN DAMN! (And I don't want Burroughs) Rogowski will be a pretty solid player, just doesn't have star status as a prospect. Would be a good deal for the Reds simply because they'd unload the contract for two guys that I feel will be starting everyday players at their respected positions, one of which has a chance to be an upper echelon starter at his position (Chris Young). Plus financially it makes too much sense for the Reds. They need to get rid of these awful contracts so they can start developing their players and be able to sign them to deals (ala the Tribe and even Sox to a lesser extent) and slowly yet surely, they'll have themselves a nucleus. They are a long ways off though, but Willy Mo is definately one of those guys.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 09:49 AM) damn, beat me to it. Anthrax always has some sweet transaction ideas......... And trust me, he's available. The Angels love Itzuris.
-
QUOTE(Mr. Showtime @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 09:44 AM) I don't think anyone in the NL would do it. Boston or NY in the AL could. That contract is going to scare people off. Had they traded Manny, I could see it, but not right now. See with Walker, he only had to go through the NL, not many teams had a chance to grab him. Put the Angels in as a potential sleeper. Steve Finley is killing them offensively in CF and they have been looking long and hard for a DH but appeared to fall short of getting Mike Sweeney (I don't think talks ever got much past the preliminary stage). Moreno has the money.

QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 09:40 AM) How is it known that a player is placed on waivers? Is there a formal letter sent to team offices around the league? is it a wire that the public can access? Its something that is released by MLB and then all the teams get it. The waiver claim process goes through all teams and they can pass or put on a claim (in order by league and record). So every team in the NL gets a chance and than every team in the AL gets a chance and than finally the Sox.
-
QUOTE(Controlled Chaos @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 09:30 AM) Im still kinda confused. So Boston can claim him and then if a trade doesn't get worked out...they can say forget it and then nobody gets him??? or is it if a trade doesn't get worked out either way Boston gets griffey and has to take on his whole contract? Ya, if Boston claims him, than Griffey would either be a Red Sox or Red. The Reds could simply say, fine, take his contract (the Red Sox would than pay the 20,000 waiver fee to the Reds) and Griffey goes his way. If the Reds/BoSox don't want to go that far, than the Reds and Red Sox could work out a trade for the slugger. If they can't work out a trade and Cincy doesn't want the Red Sox to simply take his contract off their hands (with a full waiver claim) than Griffey is stuck in Cincy for the rest of the season. However, if no team puts a waiver claim on Griffey (which I expect to happen) than the Reds are free to negotiate a trade with any team in baseball.

QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 09:25 AM) Well if they are still going to try and get rid of Dunn, and Casey is rumored to be on the way out because of lack of production and hefty contract, then Young and Rogo make sense. Sure, they'd want pitching. It makes sense to me, but at the same time, if the Sox weren't willing to give up a guy like Bmac (and to some teams, Chris Young may be of interest more to some teams) than it would make sense to me. Young is a guy with stellar upside (and I do mean stellar) and when it comes to those type of guys, the Reds will make room. Especially since Dunn, Casey, and Griffey should all be gone by the start of next season (well if their GM and owners were any smart they'd all be moved, plus Milton).
-
This would be total crap if he gets suspended. I think we all know he hit the batter intentionally, but at the same time no warnings had been issued. It just would go too far to suspend him. That said, it seems like every time a pitcher is ejected they end up getting about a 5 game suspension, so It will probably happen. I wonder if the Sox will call up someone to pitch during that suspension or if they'll just stick with the current rotation.

I noticed Nachreiner had a good outing. 4 K's in 2 innings for Great Falls. He's always had a great arm, I'm starting to wonder if he's on the verge of figuring things out (still has a very high ERA). GF gave up all unearned runs in the loss, rough way to go down.

QUOTE(Randar68 @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 09:54 AM) With the emergence of Chris Young, the great season Valido has had, along with adding Owens and Rogo doing it at AA, How could we move down? Nobody but Jenks has moved up to Chicago full-time... Hey Randar, I've been meaning to ask you, but if you got time, we'd love for you to be a part of the panel. If so basically we'll send you an email or PM with the questions and you'll just fill out your answers and send them back to us. -
Well one day the name Soxtalk.com sounded like a good idea...the rest is history and I've been kicking myself in the ass ever since. I try blowing up the server thinking you all would get the hint, but no, instead more people just show up Just wait, one day you'll see a banner with a bunch of ivy in it In all serious, I'll throw a little history in here. I was visiting WSI one day and saw a post by this weird guy named RIO (from the ESPN boards as well) and it said he was starting a website. I almost never went on the internet back than but found it interesting and shot him an email. Ended up starting SoxNet.net and I helped him out with it. We had a message board there but eventually came up with the idea of starting a seperate board and came up with the name Soxtalk.com We'd kind of split market them, posting articles here and on SoxNet and than eventually getting FutureSox.com involved. SoxNet closed a little more than 2 years ago but Soxtalk has continued to grow and grow and the site never ceases to amaze me (and thats a good thing...most of the time). Its been a cool ride and it takes up way too much of not only my time, but everyone's time. We could of cured some major disease with all the time everyone here has put into Soxtalk.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 09:07 AM) I agree with you, but I can see King George saying "Get Griffey!" They just failed to pick up Bernie's $15M option for next season. I just thought about that, but I Think they want to get a legit CF and I'm sure most teams going after Griffey realize the best thing to do with him is to ocassionally play him in the OF, but also let him DH a good amount. He's actually a really good option cause he can play a good OF, but you can also Dh him a decent amount. He's also from everything I've ever heard, a great guy. I think it would be a tremendous acquisition, especially since it would move Everett to the bench where he could provide a lot of depth.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 08:54 AM) Not with waivers. If Cincy lets him go, he is gone. Honestly I don't think either team has the money for him, especially the Yankees. Even with all of the pitching problems they had, they weren't even RUMORED to be involved in anything. I agree, no one will take him straight up, imo. Of course the Yanks could really use a CF, but I still can't see them doing it and no way does Boston do it. I think a lot of teams learned from the time the Pads put a block on Randy Myers (who was going to go to the Braves) and then got stuck with his fat contract for a few years. The Pads did go to the series that year...that was just an awesome team to watch.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 09:02 AM) Good. We didn't want you to root for the NY YAnkees of the NHL anyway. Problem is I'm never gonna be able to see these games. I'll just have to mooch off my best bud whose a huge red wing fan and buys the center ice package or whatever it is. -
