  1. I was really impressed with Bradley. Grossman looked solid, floated a few passes, but he looked comfortable in the pocket and flashed his quick release. Also had a few perfect balls that were dropped that had an effect on his completion %. TJ looked good, very nimble runner and the 1st string units on both ends were impressive. I did notice the officials were calling minimal contact as PI, which dissapointed me, cause I think there is some extent of incidental contact that should be disregarded (especially when a guy is going for the ball). The defense looked fantastic (the starters) and I liked the agressiveness. They were really getting pressure. Oguneley had one awesome sack where he just worked the olineman and took down Feeley with one arm (it was sweet). Simply put, the Bears looked quick and to me thats the ultimate compliment. On the negative side, too many penalties and too many missed tackles, but thats to be expected in a pre-season game and hopefully as they get more practice and game situations we'll see those numbers go down (they should). I liked Turner's game-calling. You can see he's gonna be big on play-action and I saw a few slant calls (one of my favorite play calls) and quite frankly I expect good things with this offense. Oh and Mushin....YES...oh my god, the guy has hands, he is going to make the catches and thats going to make everyone else on the field better (especially the RB and the other WR's).
  2. QUOTE(Fotop @ Aug 9, 2005 -> 09:08 AM) Well yes, we have unranked opponents...we can't play everyone. But to say that our schedule would be harder if we were in the Big 10 is downright laughable. There are years in the big 10 where teams get to dodge other top teams (read: Purdue this year). Add in the fact that there's only about three elite teams in the big 10 (mich, iowa, ohio state) then at most you have 3 big games a year (usually dodge one of those teams, add a decent non-con game and you're set). The rest of the games are winnable. Whereas ND has to open the season at Pitt, then goto Michigan and so on. And the teams that aren't ranked are all major conference teams (sans Navy, but we have tradition to uphold there). There's no western michigan on our schedule as a "tune up." Hell I'm a Hawkeye fan but they get tuneups like Drake, etc. Big 10 teams also have some cupcakes on their schedule. I'm with you fotop, the SOS bit isn't the reason ND isn't joining a major conference like the big 10. The #1-20 reasons are finances and ND makes way too much money by being independent and has no reason to join a conference (even though as a fan I think it would be quite interesting to have them in a conference). Of course if they were in the big 10, my allegiances would be hurting with Iowa and ND battling each other (my two college teams).
  3. QUOTE(Fotop @ Aug 8, 2005 -> 10:09 PM) Yep, we certainly fear a "tough" schedule. All those top 25 teams sure are pushovers. We consistetly have one of the hardest schedules in the nation EVERY year. The big conference teams can't really say that (Nebraska, I'm looking in your general direction). And ND will NEVER join the big 10. For many reasons: they don't NEED a conference when they're on national tv every week, they have their own tie-ins to the BCS, they DO share bowl money now but the BCS kicksback money to ND every year they don't make a BCS, and as much as everyone may think otherwise...they're still an elite program that can hang by themselves. Also, I think I specifically remember the last time this whole Big 10/ND thing was talked about (in reality) Michigan and Ohio State were highly against it since it would clog up their plans of winning the Big 10 every year. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ As for greasy's post (sorry about the delay, just moved back to campus) I think we've got a good shot at 7 wins. 6 is a little more of a conservative estimate, but it's also a possibility. I think our offense will surprise some people since nearly every offensive starter is returning. The big question is the defense and the overall depth of the team. We're very thin (thank you, Tyrone Willingham) and injuries could cripple us. The secondary has always been a question mark but I think our safeties will have quality seasons. If one or two players could breakout on defense, we may be in for a great year. I know it's a lot of ifs but anything can happen in college football and I fully believe that I will see a major upset at home this year (USC is a longshot, but Tennesee can be had). Either way I'm crazy pumped for our opener against Pitt. The offense has a lot of weapons and I think that alone will lead them to pull a few bigger upsets. However, their lack of depth on defense is going to hurt them big time against a team like USC (and their offense) and potentially Michigan (I think they got a really solid looking offense with Henne). Still, I'm excited to see Weiss implimenent a hopefully effective west coast scheme (since Tyrone's scheme never really worked out). However, if Quinn gets hurt, the Irish are screwed.
  4. QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 8, 2005 -> 09:34 PM) In your opinion, what can be done to help this offense? If KW is likely to make a move, it will be for another OF/DH type that probably won't play more than Everett would. The left side of our team (SS, 3B, and LF) has been just awful lately, but all three of those guys aren't going anywhere. What can be done to kick-start an offense that really seems flat and isn't producing. I know our pitching has been super, but in order to be successful during this very difficult stretch of our schedule, we're going to have to be able to score more than 2 or 3 runs on a given night. With Pods struggling like crazy to get on base, and then having just as much of a struggle stealing succesfully, it might be a good idea to cut down on the straight stolen base attempt, and go with more hit-and-runs to utilize Pods speed. Timo not batting 5th.
  5. Good...I wish Frank nothing but the best, but it would be a foolish move to do anything but buyout the contract.
  6. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Aug 6, 2005 -> 09:21 AM) http://arizona.diamondbacks.mlb.com/NASApp...t=.jsp&c_id=ari Tony Clark gets extension D-Backs ink first baseman to two more seasons Conor Jackson anyone? He's a better prospect than Brian Anderson is, and he could probably be had for a straight up trade. Offensively though, I tend to agree with you on Connor, although I also think Anderson will bve a very solid offensive player. The real nicde thing about Connor are his walk totals.
  7. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 8, 2005 -> 10:28 AM) Dan Haren is best friends with Soxtalk's own Jim Bullard, and I remember Jim telling us exactly how good Haren was going to be, not to mention the payroll savings that the A's got, plus the certianty of knowing how long Haren will be with Oakland, and you have got to call this a win-win trade at worst, and if Mulder leaves St Louis soon, it is a difinate win for the A's. Ya, Bull was mentioning that to me over the off-season. Plus he picked him up on his fantasy league team or at least I thought he did.
  8. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Aug 6, 2005 -> 08:02 PM) That and other things. Not a whole lotta peach trees up here. Did you know Jason's mother's name is "Cooter"?
  9. QUOTE(Soxnbears01 @ Aug 8, 2005 -> 11:23 AM) i won't be there 1) i'll be at school and need to save up for playoffs 2) i've had an overdose of soxtalk at the park this summer. Considering i've met just about everyone i'd like to meet on the boards But Jabroni's gonna be there
  10. QUOTE(Steff @ Aug 8, 2005 -> 11:19 AM) If it goes well this time maybe we can work with the Sox to plan it earlier in the season next year, and on a weekend if it's possible. Thats what I'm hoping. I keep debating making it out, but I'd be missing classes and it just doesn't make sense financially for me to fly in when I'm hoping to save up as much cash as possible for a potential playoff run. Next year I'm going to be get a hold of Brooks early in the year and try to set a date sometime in July when most everyone would be free and hopefully create some sort of weekend series (we'll see how that works though). Hopefully everyone who goes has a blast though, I know if I were in Chicago I'd be there. On a sidenote really looking forward to the Yanks series. Its my last weekend before school starts
  11. I can't stand her show.
  12. QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Aug 8, 2005 -> 10:16 AM) UIC starts on the 22nd. Man, and my vacation just started 2 weeks ago. It's okay. I like college so it's no biggie. I heard some schools in Florida start this week too and some schools in GA started last week. Thats when I start. I get back to California late on the 21st after hopefully seeing the Sox take a series from the Yanks at the cell A few more days and my internship ends, than I have roughly a week of being a bum and than school starts and I go back to my old job.
  13. This is going to be the start of a real tough stretch...@NY, @BOS, Vs MINN, VS NY
  14. To a great poster and a great mod. Now he's just a little extra "super"
  15. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Aug 7, 2005 -> 07:20 PM) Garland: Bad: Outings where he's surrendered more than 4 ER = 4 Outings where he's surrendered 10 or more hits = 3 Outings where he's issued 3 or more walks = 2 Outings where he's surrendered 3 or more HRs = 2 Good: Outings where he's held the oppenent to 2 ERs or less = 13 Outings where he's held the opponent to 0 ERs =3 Outings where he's held the opponent to 4 or less hits = 5 Outings where he's issued 1 walk or less to the opponent = 15 Outings where he has managed to not walk a single batter = 3 Buehrle: Bad: Outings where he's surrendered more than 4 ER = 3 Outings where he's surrendered 10 or more hits = 3 Outings where he's issued 3 or more walks = 3 Outings where he's surrendered 3 or more HRs = 1 Good Outings where he's held the oppenent to 2 ERs or less = 13 Outings where he's held the opponent to 0 ERs = 6 Outings where he's held the opponent to 4 or less hits = 4 Outings where he's issued 1 walk or less to the opponent = 15 Outings where he has managed to not walk a single batter = 7 The fact of the matter is, even as dominate as Garland has been this year, Buehrle has been even better. Garland may have 3 more wins however Buehrle IMO as of August 7th is the AL Cy Young. Great analysis. Right now I'm tied between the two of them, but Buehrle has been awesome and I'd agree he's pitched better this year. I just hope they both get a big gold world series ring on opening day next year
  16. QUOTE(Antonio Osuna @ Aug 7, 2005 -> 08:40 PM) Dolgin pointed out the similarity between this and the ad where Rowand meets the devil. Right when Rowand got knocked out, I immediately thought of that commercial.
  17. Best Sox game I ever saw was the one this year against the Dodgers where they came back and AJ hit the walk off homer of Yhancy. A close 2nd is a game I saw in 1999 or 2000 when the Sox came from behind to beat Percival and the Angels in Anaheim. I was going absolutely crazy and ended up being one of the background people on the ESPN telecast (it was a Sunday night game and a couple of my friends said they could specifically hear me cheering on the Sox). Best game I ever attended was a game at Dodger stadium where Dennis Martinez threw a perfect game. A close 2nd was the no hitter I saw Mark Langston and Mike Witt combine on in Anaheim.
  18. Happened last spring. It was a totally fluke incident (Mario and I were at the game and saw it happen). The reporters that day were slow coming up with all these weird stories, but his daughter was ok, which is all that matters.
  19. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Aug 7, 2005 -> 08:16 PM) Had splits of .315/.388/.500 in July and splits of .300/.417/.750 (3HR in 20AB) so far this month. Is finally hitting over .200 against lefties, but still has an OPS of just under .800 against them. His BA/RISP has also increased to .250 now which is 11th for qualified AL 1B out of 15 (Justin Morneau is last with .226 BTW). He'll get $10M from somebody this off-season, is that going to be us though? Teams that I can see making a run at Paulie are of course the Yankees, Mets, Blue Jays and Giants. I still think he'll finish the season between .275 and .280 and will resign with the White Sox. I've been laughing all year at all the people bashing him and quite frankly I'm convinced he's going to have some huge hits in the post-season for the Sox.
  20. Crede has always been one of my favs. He's played rock solid this year and has came up with numerous clutch hits. Joe...YESSSSS
  21. Way to go Sox. Big Jon was dynomite today. That was an error he made (shouldn't of even fielded the play, it was tougher than DJ and Hawk made them think) but aside from that he was absolutely perfect today. Fun game to watch.
  22. QUOTE(BaMoFo @ Aug 6, 2005 -> 09:47 AM) I've heard so much about Iowa, Are they really that good? Hawkeyes
  23. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Aug 6, 2005 -> 08:50 AM) Chris Young is gonna be good.
