Hurricane Katrina
Here's what I want to know...why the hell can't they fix the levy's. Why not take cars and just start dumping them all over this areas to slow down the water. Get the naval construction crew out there (the ones that build all the bridges and such) and get them working. Hell, for christ sake crash a barge in the areas where the levy's have opened. Do whatever it takes. Maybe its not as easy as it sounds, but I'd think considering you know a lot is going to get destroyed if they don't fix them (and it did) That you'd be very destructive and would just dump everything freaking possible on the areas to try and protect the levy's.

Hurricane Katrina
QUOTE(56789 @ Aug 31, 2005 -> 01:11 PM) I saw a story on CNN this morning with this lady in new orleans crying with her kids saying that during the eye, her husband jumped on his bike to ride over to her moms house to see if she was ok, and now no one can find him. Now that is very sad and all, but what was the guy thinking? Why didnt they get together with the mom to weather the storm with each others in the first place. Then he trys to ride across town to see if she is ok during the short break...how stupid. I saw that too. I was like wow, that guy wasn't thinking. Sad story though and the women was crying her eyes out on tv. Really sad to see how many families have been torn up in this, how many people have lost jobs and just how many people are without a city to call home.

Owens, Rogo = SL All-Stars
QUOTE(Randar68 @ Aug 31, 2005 -> 09:34 AM) Young not being on the team is silly. Those first 2 months cost him a .290 30-30 year. He's been the best player in that league for the last 3 months. Ya, I was stunned to see he was left off. Whoever made the vote rode the short bus to school every morning.

Hurt not ruling out October
QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Aug 31, 2005 -> 06:58 AM) Would you care to make a wager? He's in a cast, if the best case scenerio occured and he was able to get the cast off in a couple weeks, that would leave him with 2 weeks until the playoffs to get strength back into the area, and get sharp enough hitting to where he actually could contribute. He wouldn't be able to take a minor league rehab assignment, since the minor league season will be over. There was the same pipe dream that he and Maggs would possibly return last year. It isn't going to happen, its not realistic. I'm on the same page as you Dick. I've written off Frank's career and I'm hoping the Sox have as well. I think bringing him back this year would be a mistake. Now if Frank is able to get in some Ab's and look good before the season ends, well thats another story. I just don't see it happening. Plus, Frank was a selfish hitter while with the Sox this year and thats not the type of guy I want on this team. 12 hr's or none, he was killing this team with his swing for the fence approach (especially once he cooled off).

Hurt not ruling out October
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Aug 31, 2005 -> 06:36 AM) Seems like A-row hits better when frank is around, anyone notice this? I dunno. Arow hasn't been himself all year offensively (or has he been??). However, I see him starting to get locked in and one thing about Aaron is, once he gets locked in during a season he seems to stay locked in. If he can get rolling like he was last year, it could mean really big things for this offense, especially with JD getting on track.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Aug 30, 2005 -> 09:11 PM) Once again, IMO you really have to live in Chicago to get a feel for what's going on with the Bears. Hutchinson being cut was not a surprise to anyone I know that follows the Bears, the writing was on the wall. Kittner is better than Hutch, there I said it. Kittner is still on this team because he was Turner's QB at Illinois a few years back, he knows the system and is pretty well suited for that #3 spot. Kittner will not be cut, I'm certain of it. Oh trust me, I knew he was getting cut. The writing was definately on the wall when he got immediately benched and demoted to 4th string. I totally disagree on Kit though. He has zero arm strength and is not an NFL qb. I understand that he knows the system, but so did Quinn and quite frankly Quinn is twice the QB Kittner is. I'd like to see another veteran brought in because Blake has yet to do anything on the field to make me feel comfortable if Orton stinks (which could very well happen, in fact I'm expecting it because I have very little faith in a rookie coming in and suceeding). I just hope he doesn't come in and do awful (if he can minimize turnovers I'm happy).

Helluva game in Anahiem
QUOTE(Kalapse @ Aug 30, 2005 -> 09:21 PM) Maybe it's the fact that he's the polar opposite of a lot of the boring ass announcers that you hear around baseball (ie: Seattle, Pitt :sleep ). Rex might be dumb when it comes to Baseball strategy and if you want to learn about baseball stay far away from Angel broadcasts but the one thing you can't argue is that he is entertaining. I've noticed there aren't many good anouncing teams anymore. Rarley do I come across some that are entertaining. The Twins announcers have grown on me a bit and I love Michael Kay (Yanks announcers). A's have absolutely hideous announcers (well if they have the same ones this year as last).

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Aug 30, 2005 -> 09:06 PM) I thought so, I always hated Hudler but the more I listen to him, the more I find myself appreciating his idiotic yelling and dumb senseless comments. PS. I'm gonna ignore that Caruso comment. Hold on...let me go suspend myself But ya, Hudler to me adds absolutely zero baseball intelligence to a game. I always hear him ranting and raving about things on the broadcast than I turn to look at my friends to see, did he just say that. Than we will stare and laugh thinking about what a buffon this guy is. Its like he never played the game or something hearing some of his expert analysis. To me its not the fact that he's annoying, because he is, its more about how many stupid things he says during a game (I'm not talking about being wrong when talking about a player, I'm talking about being wrong when it comes to generic baseball strategy). I can't wait till this offseason and I know most of the ticket holders in my section feel the same way (partially because I convinced them with my constant blathering about him. They all think highly of me after I whined and complained when they signed Cabrera and Finley (stupid moves). Heck I didn't even like Eckstein, but it didn't take a rocket scientist to figure out signing Cabrera was a lateral move at best, one that cost them a whole lot more money. But pretty soon Erstad will be back in center and he's really fun to watch out there. I just wonder what the over/under will be on him getting hurt again.

I'm still semi surprised. No doubting he sucked in the preseason, but no one is going to tell me that he's worse than Kittner. My guess is the Bears plan on waiving Kittner later on and will be adding a veteran whose cut. Maybe even a guy like Rohan Davey.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Aug 30, 2005 -> 09:04 PM) Big Daddy Vladdy to the plate. Is it wrong that the more I watch Angels' games the more Rex Hudler is growing on me? Yes...in fact Mike Caruso would be a better announcer than the Wonderdog

Hurt not ruling out October
QUOTE(White Sox Josh @ Aug 30, 2005 -> 06:10 PM) This sounds pretty promising. I saw a podiatrist a couple days ago to get a callis removed and i asked him about the Big Hurt situation and he said that their is a protective boot out their that would allow him to play and their would be a good chance that he wouldn't get injured any further. He did say though that he would probably need surgery at the end of the year. Link I'm sorry, but I have zero interest in seeing Hurt play in the post-season. A, he's not going to have the at bats necessary to get himself ready and B, he's a total liability to have, especially the deeper you get into the post-season (if they make it). Plus if they do end up playing in an NL park for half of a series you have a guy thats totally worthless unless its in a one AB situation and like I said, you have the issue of the guy having zero rehab time.

Double Headers
QUOTE(Benchwarmerjim @ Aug 30, 2005 -> 06:52 PM) My friend and I spent about 13 hours at Metrodome because of a doubleheader. It was 2001. The Twins were playing the A's. It was a scheduled doublerheader (trying to get people excited for baseball they way it meant to be.. or some silly marketing scheme like that) It was cool and not so cool cool- lots of baseball not so cool-it was at crappy metrodome I saw a double dip at the dome in the 90's. It was versus the Yanks (IIRC) and was really odd because it was a game that was being made up in Minnesota, even though it was rained out in New York. I think double dips are awesome, especially if the crowd isn't there and you can kind of space yourself out and relax at the park. Of course I've only been to two. One there and one in Charlotte to see the Knights play.

Soxtalk Congratulates Brandon McCarthy
QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Aug 30, 2005 -> 08:44 PM) Thanks for the info about the change, I did not know that. Also, yes I think Brandon is a special pitcher and a special player, I have not seen Young play much(besides the few ab's at the futures game) but he sounds like he just has absolutely outstanding talent, I'm very excited to see him play eventually. The other thing that stands out about Young is the type of individual he is. You see a lot of me players and Young as well as McCarthy definately aren't those type of guys. Speaking of Chris Young he has to be about as humble of a person as possible and he's also the type of guy that flat out does everything asked of him and than some. He's a hard worker whose constantly doing whatever it takes to make the necessary adjustments to his swing. Its the type of "willing to do what it takes" attitude thats necessary. And remember this is the first win of whats going to be a nice winning streak (ie the Sox are gonna go on a roll winning series after series).

Helluva game in Anahiem
It was a thing of beauty. I was begging my dad not to leave when it went to xtra's, but he's got a flight at like 4 AM tomorrow for business. Colon was freaking sick and Zito was every bit as good. Made on mistake the entire game. Heck there wasn't a hard hit ball by the Angels until the 7th inning and Chavez was the only guy to hit the ball hard on Bart. Bart is my vote for Cy Young at this point.

Soxtalk Congratulates Brandon McCarthy
QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Aug 30, 2005 -> 08:39 PM) I think I remember an interview with him in spring training where he said he eats a ton and just can not gain any weight, I'm sure Bobby could take care of that though I can vouch for that. Kid eats like a horse but he just doesn't put on the weight. He has added weight each off-season though, its just been a slow process. He works out really hard though and does a lot to stay in shape.

Soxtalk Congratulates Brandon McCarthy
QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Aug 30, 2005 -> 07:33 PM) I'm sure someone can answer this better but for some reason he just stopped using it(I'm not sure if there was something wrong physically..?), in spring training that pitch made him effective and it's a plus pitch for him. When he's using that pitch he's going to be hard to hit, he's got a chance to be special and I really believe that. Like I mentioned earlier in the year when he went back down. He was tipping his pitch and because of it he had zero confidence in throwing it. He made adjustments and got back the arm slot and has just been throwing blanks ever since. It was a fact of the opposition being able to read changeup mixed with him losing confidence in the pitch. He got the swagger back and its made a huge difference. He's also working on a 2 seamer IIRC and we'll see that a bit more this spring. I also heard some grumblings about adding a slider to his rep eventually, but I think the Sox plan on taking things slow when it comes to stuff like that. He has a plus change and curveball and a good fastball, thats bordering on plus because of his command. This is a very very impressive pitcher and assuming he stays healthy, he's going to have a very very bright future in this league. Its a blessing in disguise that the Sox didn't make any moves and if we hold onto Chris Young that will be another blessing if you ask me. The system has a few guys that I deem "special" and I think we will be lucky to watch them slowly gel in with some of the current players in potential creating a dynasty of sorts on the South Side of Chicago.

QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 30, 2005 -> 06:51 PM) From my viewpoint, his change-up was more of his out pitch tonight than his curveball was. That was great to see. My 2 cents and we know I'm a huge huge Mac backer, but that was the best changeup I've seen all season this side of Johan. It was just a thing of beauty and he definately had some bounce in his step. Absolutely brilliant performance.

QUOTE(daa84 @ Aug 30, 2005 -> 06:31 PM) great breaking ball tonight, every fastball is on the black, havent seen much of the change Edit: or not as hawk says he has been using the change lol He must of thrown 20% changeups, it was a thing of beauty. Mac was absolutely brilliant. Right now I'm watching the parts I missed when I headed out for the Angel game (great game, bummed I had to leave when it went to xtra's, but I guess thats what you get when your dad has to get up at 4 AM).

1-2-3 inning for Mac and that changeup is really looking good. Its been anywhere from 10-15 MPH off his fastball which he's throwing both inside and outside. I also love how he's been willing to throw the changeup on 3-2 counts. It shows confidence. It'll be 5-0 after the Sox bat next.
