Torra has plus stuff and kind of came out of nowhere this year. As the only legit pitcher on Umass team he's had to be a total workhorse (which is a big concern). Made some changes mechanically and its really paid off this year. Has good command and definately is a sleeper in the 1st round.

QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Jun 6, 2005 -> 11:08 AM) Can someone give me an approx. time of the Sox first pick? How long does a first rounder usually take? Probably 5-10 minutes after the draft starts. The draft flat out rolls. Its pretty much immediate.
-
Thats a bigger questionmark than Carillo whose already very round. If Carillo was 6-3, he'd be a top 10 pick, probably a top 5 pick. I think he's a huge value pick if he's available, but someone may snag him before he gets to the Sox.

Greg Walker discusses his "pull baseball" motto
Chisoxfn replied to Jabroni's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Where does he mention his "pull ball" philosphy? I never saw anything where he says I want guys pulling the ball? -
Hopefully there isn't an ASU-Arizona Super Regional

QUOTE(danman31 @ Jun 6, 2005 -> 10:05 AM) They had that last year too. Did they? s*** I must be retarded. I was listening to the streaming radio version the whole time.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jun 6, 2005 -> 09:29 AM) UH, arent the Angels in the midst of aquiring Mike Sweeney, they will have an extra bet laying around after that. Hell if I know. I've been computerless for about 4 days (finally got back to civilization last night). But as an Angel fan I'd be stoked if they got Sweeney. The guy is a machine and they definately have the chips. Your right they probably would have an extra bat off the bench, but they won't have any help at 3rd base where the Sox would need it.

QUOTE(beck72 @ Jun 6, 2005 -> 09:25 AM) I'm not saying Crede his horrible. A crede-burroughs swap would be for two underachieving guys who may need a change of scenery to fulfill their potentials. SD needs righties who can hit for some pop. Nevin for 1b has a SLG of .438, their top RH bat. The sox would have to add more than Joe to get a guy like burroughs--a young LH bat who can hit for avg. and takes walks. Joe has potential--yet the sox need consistency more. .286/.368 playing everyday isn't underachieving, imo. He's not a run producer, but he hasn't really been asked to be one and is playing in an extreme pitchers park. That would look amazing right now. He's a good hitter, maybe not the prototypical 3rd baseman but he's a good hitter. I like good hitters and the Sox need more of them.

QUOTE(beck72 @ Jun 6, 2005 -> 09:19 AM) The key to any deals for the sox is getting guys who can add to this team. no doubt the sox want to upgrade at 3b and should be willing to overpay [within reason] to upgrade there. Everett might not get players who can add this year, as any team getting him would want him for a playoff run. So, the sox might have to trade other young players, prospects to fill the holes they really need to fill Thats why I think you work the 3 team angles when your dealing guys that competing teams would be interested in. Plus you mention yourself the Sox are in competition and will want everyday players back (ie major leaugers) and the Pads are in that same position. Thats why you almost have to get a 3rd team involved otherwise its hard to see a deal that would make sense from both perspectives (rarely do deals help two teams out in the short run). For example, suppose the Angels want to add a DH (its been one of there big holes, but they will be getting Vladdy back) then the Sox could move Everett over for a prospect or two (nothing necessarily amazing) which could than get moved (maybe in addition to a Sox prospect, depending on how much cash they are saving) to a team out of it with a quality reliever (maybe the Mariners for Everyday Eddie, but in that case you'd have to give up some quality guys and I don't know if the Sox are going to go with that high profile of a move in terms of relief).

QUOTE(ChiSoxyGirl @ Jun 6, 2005 -> 09:09 AM) I was looking into brushing up my Spanish at CC course, but it was $400/course (for a resident), which I think is really crazy expensive. I don't feel like you are getting a lot of bang for your buck, no matter where you go to school. I have students here whose smallest class has been 150 students (insane), but they're still paying full tuition and all that. I think with the rising cost of education the US is really pricing out lower middle class and people with low SES. In this end this is only going to end up hurting this country. Higher education is too expensive, it sounds like Cali has a better system than NY or IL, but even that would be too much if you had two parents working minimum (or low paying jobs). Most of the time in those cases you qualify for a grant. However, at the same time, I find it hard to imagine (if you live at home) that you can't work and do what you can to raise enough funds to pay the 4000 a year. I realize thats hard and you may have to work more than some kids do, but my thinking is if you want to go to college you'll find a way. I know my dad worked 50 hr's a week and went to school on the side cause he wanted to go badly (was living on his own in Cali after getting out of the navy and away from his entire family). But your right 400 bucks is a lot more for one course. Heck, 5 courses at a JC and your paying the same as I do at a Cal State. I can only speak on California, but it does do an amazing job and if they stopped giving illegals free or in state tuition than it would even be more affordable. I was reading an article in my school paper and they give illegal aliens in state tuition and often times free tuition (the results said that like over 50%). Which is quite ridiculous. As far as class sizes go, my program I'm in kicks ass (they have the best accounting program in SoCal...all the big 4 recruit heavy out of it, along with USC - both rank relatively even) and I've never had an accounting class with more than 25 people. Largest business class, probably 40-45 and my largest class (maybe 100 students and that was for my GE in history). On the most part I'd say my average class size in my major is 20 students (I once had a class with just 6 students) and overally probably 30 (if you excluse the 3 history classes I took in lecture halls). Hell the more I hear stories, maybe California's educational system isn't as bad as I always thought My original point is that I think if people want to go to college they'll find a way. Luckily I don't have to worry too much. I live at home, work, and my dad is well off enough where he pays for my tuition (as long as I do good in school) and I pay for the books.

QUOTE(beck72 @ Jun 6, 2005 -> 09:02 AM) What is Burroughs defense like? [you're from the west coast right?] Weren't the Padres looking to deal Burroughs last yr as well? With all the lefties in their lineup, a righty like Crede with some pop wouldn't be all that crazy. Maybe a bullpen arm thrown in with Crede could get it done. With Loretta coming off the DL, and Geoff Blum earning his playing time, Burroughs could be the odd man out. Crede could see time at 3b as well. His ability to hit for avg, and get on base would look good for the sox. His SLG is non-existent. But the NL teams have to have some power guys from a spot like 3b if they don't have power at CF, 2b or SS. Burroughs...24 years old and has been long talked about as there shining star (they really hyped him and obviously he hasn't lived up to it) but he's hitting .286 with a .366 OBP. I don't think he's too bad of a 3rd baseman but he's probably not quite as good as Crede. He has all the tools though (good range, good arm). I just posted something similar in another thread, but only way the Pads do this is if they get what they want from a 3rd team cause they are one of the 3 best teams in baseball (record wise) and are going to want major league parts back and good ones at that. Crede, Tracey and someone else for Burrouhgs with those parts getting moved to a 3rd team who provides the bat or arm or whatever the Pads need.

QUOTE(beck72 @ Jun 6, 2005 -> 08:54 AM) solid points. The bat [for 3b or a platoon type guy who could see regular time] should be someone who can hit very well vs. RHP--preferably LH. Carl was supposed to provide LH power. Yet this year he's under .200 and almost [or all] of his HR's have come hitting vs. RHP. If Carl can't hit from the left side, [like he hasn't this yr] his value for the sox decreases dramatically. IF you go one step farther and Frank is looking fine and Gload has came back and is playing like he did last year than I think you have to move Everett. Gload last year was a better player than Everett this year (no doubt about that in MY mind). Why pay Everett to clog the bench (not that I don't think he's valuable, but he's highly overrated and the Sox have other areas of need). You deal Everett to a team looking for a bat (maybe a 3 way deal) and you find a way to get a quality reliever out of it. Whether the other team gives the prospects to a 3rd team involved or what not. Then you look towards 3rd base and this will be tough. The Pads would be nuts to deal Burroughs (he may not be the prototypical 3rd baseman, power wise, but he's still a good young player) and they aren't trading him unless they get help in other areas (on the major league roster). .286, .366 OBP in a pitchers park. He'll never hit ya 20 HR's, but maybe 15 at the cell and he's a heck of a hitter. Did I mention that he's just 24. Of course if there was a way to get Burroughs I'd get him. I'd give up quite a bit as well, but it would have to be a 3 team deal and I Don't know what the Pads would be looking for. Maybe the Pads want another hitter and you acquire Burroughs, they get a hitter, and that 3rd team gets Crede and Sean Tracey and Felix Diaz/Arnie Munoz. They get 3 guys with a shot to produce (and in the end, when you make deals for youngsters, I think you want guys near major league ready who will have a shot to pan out).

QUOTE(mreye @ Jun 6, 2005 -> 07:43 AM) I just read the first part about the California kid going to UNLV. Isn't school free for him at a state school in Cal? Or at least extremely discounted? Stay in state or quitcher b****in'! This is what I don't really get. I have gone to a 4 year school from the get go. Now its a commuter school (pretty much all of the Cal State schools are, the UC's are still semi heavy commutter schools) and my family isn't in financial trouble, but my tuition is about 1400 a semseter, books, parking everything else at most 600 bucks which would put you at 2000 a semester (costs and such) and than 4000 a year. I really don't see this as being much at all, in fact I think its probably the best bargain of my entire life. I don't know if most states are this way, but I think most places do a pretty good job of making college affordable. Now if you want to go to Stanford or somewhere else (private schools) obviously your going to pay a lot more and the student can decide whether its worth it (in Stanfords case...maybe so, in the case of USC...hell no, imo). If someone is in that type of bind, they always have the option of 2 years at a community college (absolutely nothing wrong with going this past cause you still can get into any school you want to if your grades are good enough). Its like 21 bucks a unit or something like that so you spend maybe 300 bucks a semester plus books. Highly affordable for 2 years than your final two years you can go for 2000 a semester.

I kind of worry about Freddy hanging a lot of pitches in Colorado. Hopefully the Sox can bang the mistakes they get from the Rocks and play some small ball. Go Get Em Sox
-
I'd freaking love Sean Burroughs, but I don't see the Pads doing that.
-
Let me put it this way. I knew Ozz was a stupid manager (moves wise) but this is just freaking ridiculous. If Timo were a horse, he'd of been sent to the glue factory by now.
-
If two to three weeks from now Frank is fine and is hitting the ball well than there is no doubt in my mind that I'd deal Everett. I think there are other holes on this team and I have upmoth faith in Ross Gload backing up the 1b position (with Konerko sliding to DH) if Thomas were to get hurt. Everett isn't playing all that grand (I think he's hurt, but who knows) and it doesn't make sense to pay him all that money on the bench when you could move him, maybe in a 3 team deal, to pick up a quality reliever and maybe free up a little more payroll to add a big bat at 3rd base or another "starting" position of need.

Didn't see one and there definately should be one Anyway regionals are over for quite a few teams, however my Titans pulled off two wins last night (Pedroza was huge in both games...game winning homer and catch in game 1 while hitting a big 3 run homer in the 2nd game). They will play Arizona today at 6 Pacific time to see who moves on. The winner will play Arizona State. GO TITANS Also if for some reason USC advances on I think if they get a game televised in the next regional you should try and watch Sophmore Ian Kennedy. The guy is absolutely sick. He'll be a top 5 pick in next years draft barring injury and has been getting comparisons to Prior.

What would you rather have?

Right now...Skiles >>>> Jackson. Jackson isn't near the coach he once was and is frankly totally overrated. I'd rather pay Skiles 5-6 mill than Jackson 5-6 mill. Tell me one time Jackson took a mediocre team and made them good. Case closed. Not saying Jackson isn't a good coach, but he didn't do too good of a job with the Lakers and is totally overrated. He doesn't do much coaching, imo. He does a good job motivating guys and other things, but highly overrated in my opinion.

RIP Mikan was a great player and a great man.

QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Jun 4, 2005 -> 11:07 AM) Then I'm confused. Does the 2k series now own a monopoly of sorts of the MLBPA? How can something like that happen? I suppose I'm just finding it difficut to comprehend how EA could f*** up something this severely--allowing a monopoly to happen. EA sports bough an exclusive rights agreement with the NFL. So EA is the only group that can produce NFL games (with the players names, stadiums, etc). On the other side Sega (the ESPN/2k series) bought the exclusive rights to major league baseball (player names, stadiums, etc). So EA can make football games but not baseball games (at least not with the players names), however they can go with college. Sega can make college football games (not NFL) and major league baseball games. So odds are Sega will keep its football engine and concentrate on collegiate sports (trying to go against NCAA Football by EA) while EA is going to keep the MVP engine (likely) and create a college baseball game. On a random sidenote, EA purchased the ESPN name as well and ESPN will be implemented into all of their new games. Sega will no longer have the ESPN license.

Out of the realistic options, Carillo is the #1 guy I want right now. I rate him ahead of Townsend and barely ahead of Bogusevic. I think Bogu may have a little higher ceiling but at the same time he has a higher tendency to bust. I'm even warming to the idea of Jeff Clement. He really has improved quite a bit defensively and his swing is looking a lot better than it used to. Still, I just have doubts for whatever reason, but there is no doubt he has the physical ability. Of course if someone else slides that could change things, but I highly doubt any major names (not represented by Boras) will slide.
