QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 10:10 AM) WOW.... James was just quoted yesterday as saying he only way they would draft a HS pitcher is if he had a very clean delivery. Probably turned into a value pick. High school guys are taking a back seat to college guys and they probalby recognize that. DePodesta did that last year and they had a stellar draft.

There you all go...Bowden goes to the BoSox.

QUOTE(Palehosefan @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 10:08 AM) Whats our next pick number, I can't remember. 95
-
QUOTE(danman31 @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 10:04 AM) If they can sign him in a timely manner. They work very well with Boras, very well. Probably better than any other team in baseball.
-
LOL Tommy. You knew they would grab a Boras guy if Hoch was still there and they just made one AWESOME pick.
-
Ramos was an excellent pick. LBSU flat develops pitchers and Ramos is gonna be a good one. Just like Vargas and Weaver.

QUOTE(Fotop @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 09:58 AM) Vinny Castilla was a Type A? Bwahahahahahaha Sorry, I couldn't contain myself. So was Duque :puke

Dbacks are having a nice draft. You could almost call Stephen drew a 2005 pick as well so they have nabbed 3 1st round talents this year.
-
I'd guess 40% of the teams have worked out predraft deals. Essentially you tell the agent we'll give you this much and we'll take your client now. The agent goes, sounds good and all you have to work out are the minor details (scholarship money, etc).

QUOTE(daa84 @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 09:52 AM) i wouldnt touch mccormick for many reasons, 1.) hes boras, 2.) his college numbers really are not good. 3.) i saw him pitch and said something like good luck youll need it when he was warmin in the pen, and he went on a rampage. the kid has no makeup. man hes got gas tho...he hit 99 in the cape i believe McCormick is an intriguing guy. Million dollar arm, doesn't have the numbers to back up the pricetag though. Someone will take a flyer on him and work with his mechanics.

QUOTE(Palehosefan @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 09:50 AM) Good stuff as usual. But any reason you say he's expected to be an easy sign? Talks are the Sox pretty much worked out a predraft deal (they typically go this route). We'll see though. Basically put it should be a fast negotiation and nothing is done till its done.

QUOTE(daa84 @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 09:49 AM) maybe the bowden kid from waubansie will fall, not sure the sox would take him though, but i wouldnt mind seeing steven head outa ole miss fall, thats unlikely though, Head hasn't really fallen yet. He's kind of slated in this range. Good athlete (damn good power hitter). He'll probably go in the 2nd round, but could slide as far as the 4th round. Jeff Larish is a guy that could look good in the 3rd round if the Sox want a bat. Same with Head. A guy I like is Micah Owings (two way player from Tulane). Really good athlete, will go in the 1st 5 rounds.

Sox Select Lance Broadway in the 1st Round By Jason Gage June 7, 2005 FutureSox.com The 2005 MLB draft started on Tuesday morning with the Arizona Diamondbacks selecting SS/CF Justin Upton #1 overall. Upton, the younger brother of Devil Rays top prospect BJ Upton played shortstop in high school, but is expected to move to centerfield considering the Diamondbacks drafted Stephen Drew last year. The rest of the draft went as expected with the exception of Luke Hochevar and Craig Hansen (two Boras reps) falling. Both were rated as two of the best collegiate pitchers in the draft. Hansen ended up being selected 26th overall to the Boston Red Sox. Hochevar is still on the board while another Boras client Tyler Greene (SS) went to the Cardinals at 30th overall. The White Sox made their mark at pick 15 selecting RHP Lance Broadway. The Sox were also considering RHP Cesar Carillo out of Miami but opted for the fast rising Broadway. Broadway was rated as a supplemental – 2nd round selection up until very recently when he ran off 3 outstanding starts against top collegiate competition. Broadway went 15-1 with a 1.62 ERA for the TCU Horned Frogs. The 21 year old righty limited opponents to 83 hits in 117 innings while striking out 151 batters. Broadway paints the strike zone with his fastball and has one of the best breaking pitches in the draft (curveball). Broadway has smooth mechanics and while he doesn’t have the velocity scouts rave about, his fastball is clocked in the upper 80’s to low 90’s. Broadway is expected to be a quick sign and will likely be sent to Low A Kannapolis. The Sox next pick is at 95 overall (3rd round selection). The Sox lost their 2nd round pick when they signed Orlando Hernandez.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 09:38 AM) Jason, Ramos from Long Beach is still on the board. You think he'll last through the supp round? Very unlikely, imo. He's had his stock rise as of late. But with some of the guys sliding he could end up going very very early in the 2nd round.
-
Devine may have the best FB in the draft.
-
QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 09:28 AM) Broadway will probably be sent to High A? Nah, he'll start in Low A. Gio and Liotta will be the first up to high A.
-
Hoch, McCormick, Hansen...3 of the best arms are all still out there because of Boras. Thats gonna be a hell of a negotiation too cause you know he's gonna try and get top 10 money. The farther they fall the harder its gonna be to negotiate with Boras, imo. Matt Garza is grabbed by the Twinkies. If one of Boras guys are on the board you could see the Angels take a chance, but I'll be shocked if the Yanks/BoSox don't eventually take a flyer on them...add the Mets to that list and maybe the Dodgers. Those are about the only teams I can see going that route.
-
Marlins just continue to draft the younguns.
-
Cubs pass on Hochevar and take Pawlek. He was the top rated high school pitcher. Interesting on how much Boras' clients are sliding. You know the Yanks will snag them. Heck, the BoSox could get agressive in this draft and end up with two really good guys with there picks.
-
Rangers won't take a Boras guy so the Cubs are gonna nab Hochevar, imo. They could go with Hansen too. Man Boras is having a major effect on those two. I'm now thinking Tyler Greene will be there in the 3rd round after seeing whats happened with the rest of the guys. Carillo just went off the board, very good move by the Pads.
-
f***ing hell, I'd rather of had Hansen/Hochevar/Carillo. I hope to hell this works out. Broadway has pitched exceptionally well against some of the better teams in college baseball as of late. I just don't like drafting guys in the 1st round without a decent fastball. He has a hell of a curve though and seems to paint the zone which is a sign of a fast riser. I'm guessing it will be a very very quick sign (ie by the end of the week).
-
They go with Broadway...obviously they don't want to deal with Boras. I'm bummed with this pick cause I like Carillo more. Definate reach. f***ING MORON, we don't need help with LHP's. On a sidenote, Broadway has kicked ass against some major programs lately. I hope to hell this works out.

BA 14 of 14, will they be 15/15 or will the Sox differ.
-
Trevor Crowe off the board and the Sox are on the clock.

QUOTE(JimH @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 09:17 AM) Highly doubt the Sox take him ... very highly doubt it. He may fall to the Cubs. That would be awful. Him and Pelfrey are the two best college guys in this draft and there is zero doubt about that in my mind. Hansen would look really nice too. Could be a quick mover as well considering he's a reliever (although he's pitched awesome since moving to the rotation).
