  1. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 09:08 PM) He can fill out a bit as well like B-Mac so that fastball could yet have an a couple of extra MPH on it. With a plus curve, and an improving change, he could move, very very quickly through the system. We've got some real good SP prospects now though. As long as he can regularly hit 91-92, I don't have much concern. Even if he's 89 on a consistent basis while ocassionally hitting the 90,91,92 MPH range I'm not too concerned. If he can throw strikes with the fastball and keep hitters off balance with that hammer and good changeup, he's not going to have any trouble. That hammer is filthy and if his change is as good as Shaffer says, both the curve and change will turn his average FB into a good pitch (with time of course). Well at least thats the plan
  2. QUOTE(SoxFan562004 @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 09:07 PM) The BCS is such a trainwreck at this point. It's so beyond f***ed up, with AD's just trying to protect their slice of the money. I liked that Congress looked into the steroid problem in sports, and would love to see them take further steps to regulate some sports. For starters I would want them to clean up the boxing mess, then look into the college sports cluster f*** that goes on... I'm not advocating paying these kids salaries, but when the schools are making millions of them and some can't even afford to go out for pizza or stories of guys who can't even afford basics, it really makes me sick. A few of my good friends have played collegiate sports (I'm not near as talented) and from there instances (and this is limited) they have been pretty well taken care of. Its definately hard work and you have to put in a lot of time working with the team, etc, but you also get a free education (in most instances) and are doing something you love. Most people work in college to pay for their education and athletes that get scholarships don't really need to. They also get spending money often and obviously a full scholarship includes perks for living and all that good stuff. Plus they get food allotments during road trips (pretty good ones at that). Now its definately rough on a guy that doesn't have a scholarship, but at the same time you make sacrifices in life for things you want to do and they are doing that. They wont' be able to work but they are doing something you love. High Schools make money off sports (well many sports don't, bad example) but what about the ones that do (the major major programs). Should the huge money making football schools in Texas (high school) pay the kids? Sure maybe they deserve some deals on room and board and other things since they can't work and are helping out, but I wouldn't say they deserve salary or things like that. I'd make sure that athletes got food and at least a discounted dorm (at a lot of schools they do) and I think thats a rather fair tradeoff. Just my 2 cents.
  3. QUOTE(AirScott @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 09:05 PM) he obviously won't shy away when the pressure's on, so those three starts showed his character and make-up, which are important qualities in a pitcher. the fact that he did it late in the season tells me he won't break down. sort of sounds like a righty Buehrle with a little more velocity and a great curve. Plus they were huge pressure situations. Stanford, Miss, and Tulane...damn is that impressive. The guy dominated every time necessary, including shutting out Stanford in the regionals. I think he threw 3 shutouts in the past 4 games and its not like its the only time he's been good. I love guys that throw strikes and his curve is definately a PLUS pitch. Thats a freaking hammer if I ever saw one.
  4. Blackout rules are based on IP addie and from what i have heard proxie's don't work. However sometime the blackout gets pulled around the 4th or 5th inning. I remember there was a national blackout for a Sox-Cubs game a few weeks back and around the 4th or 5th inning it was removed and you were able to watch the game on mlb.tv.
  5. Ozuna is just a really good athlete. I've came to really like the guy. Plus the guy has wheels and I love how he's always trying to go to right field.
  6. Just want to say to all that partook in todays draft thread...wow was that a blast. Everyone was really involved and active and lots of good information was given all around. It was a real pleasure, everyone sharing info they knew on guys. Just one of the many reasons I've came to love this site (and for the cheap bastard I am, I don't ever even cringe at the thought of paying the bill of this site...its something I enjoy and today was a reason why). And just think, there are still 32 more rounds
  7. Its a difference. If I were wealthy...hell no I wouldn't even consider it. I know I said I'd take the World Series and I love the Sox like no other but I'd at least have to consider it (being I'm just out of college and starting off). At the same time I have very little doubt that I'm going to be sucessful in life (I'm a confident SOB). Still were all diehards and lets agree on one thing...we'll take 5 bucks over a WNBA championship
  8. I'm not a Walker hater, but this is a really funny thread. Original post had me laughing and than SSI's was damn good too. Thanks for the laugh fellas
  9. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 07:56 PM) I thought you said he should have been sent down a few weeks ago Jason? I wanted him to go down because if he isn't getting consistent work no point in having him up here. Cotts was hurt big time by pitching at the major league level last year, imo. In fact I've long thought he has the ability to be a frontline starting pitcher (#2 at best).
  10. Contreras...nice, and he got the win Cotts...think of freaking beauty Way to go White Sox...lets get em again tomorrow
  11. Wow, tonight was a thing of beauty. As a Cotts backer I freaking loved it. Hell I'm probably Cotts biggest fan (next to Steff of course).
  12. QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 05:06 PM) I would've made the asshole wait and sweat. Ric Bucher on ESPN said that Phil Jackson said he would love to coach Chicago again and that they were on his few list of teams he would coach. Even LA was afraid of the Bulls not signing Skiles because they thought Chicago would have a great chance of swooping him away the same way they did with Kobe last year. Skiles acted like an ass throughout the whole negotiation process to even blasting the organization. If he got the money he wanted he's now paid like a top 5 coach. Newsflash, he isn't a top 5 coach. He shouldn't be getting paid the same amount as Larry Brown. f*** Phil Jackson. That piece of s*** can kiss my ass. Let me see him do something with a team that doesn't have two of the best 5 players in the NBA.
  13. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 07:35 PM) I really hope they get both Cunn and the SDSU kid signed, especially considering the Sox not having any comp or 2nd round picks... That's what I was hoping for before the draft, too -- the Sox grabbing some guys in the 6th-7th rounds that had signability issues. BTW -- did that Danks (sp?) go? The kid who's committed to, what, Texas? And what about that pitcher Randar liked -- Bleich? I don't think Danks went. In fact there are a few guys that are really highly ranked taht didn't go. Typically guys with real solid commits. Putnam out of Ann Harbor is another high schooler that was rated in the top 100 and has yet to get drafted. I don't know if Putnam is related to Danny Putnam who played for Stanford.
  14. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 07:31 PM) With Teagarden, people were talking Mike Matheny-good defense. I personally think that Matheny is pampered a helluva lot for a guy that barely hits .230, but even getting a catcher like Matheny in the draft has to be viewed as a plus, especially not in round one... The problem is where he was drafted I"d have to think he'll be a real tough sign, especially with Boras repping him. He's going to want 1st round to supplemental round money and Boras is gonna make damn sure he does. He still has a year of eligibility as well as leverage. I think the Rangers drafted him (may be wrong) and if true its the local connection so they may know something in terms of signability, but I think there is a good shot you'll see him hold out for a 800 - 1 mill or so and if he doesn't get it, he'll just go back to college.
  15. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 07:17 PM) Any sleepers/favorite picks yet? Obviously, we don't know how these kids will do once they hit the minor leagues, but I really like the pick of Getz. Seems like he can handle the bat well at the plate, walk a bunch, and play good defense. Getz is one of my fav's, but I'm really warming up to the closer from Vandy. I love power arms in bullpen spots. I could care less when it comes to starters, but for whatever reason I always like a reliever that can come in and throw gas. Cunnigham is another guy I flat love and the kid committed to SDSU sounds pretty nice too. I also noticed the Sox drafted a few guys with sinking action, a big plus in my book.
  16. QUOTE(OilCan @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 07:05 PM) From a shear numbers standpoint, he looks great. Why not??? Also, you can never, NEVER have too much good pitching....but I agree that a couple less pitchers and a couple more position players (1b, C especially) would've helped the Sox depth. Nevertheless, good draft indeed IMO> I figure you get more value for pitchers so why not draft pitcher heavy and then deal the excess for help at positions, plus the Sox obviously have a stockpile at the OF position right now and they have some young toolsy infielders already. I'm not saying the infielders are great, but I do love the pickup of Getz (flat can handle the bat...seems like he has the potential to be a really good 2 hole hitter). And catchers are a crapshoot, they'll probably draft another, but they have two very raw once as it is in Francisco and Lucy. Lucy should be back pretty quick, in fact I thought Randar said he was activated and while Lucy didn't impress offensively he's got better tools than any of today's picks (that were catchers). Clement is god awful when it comes to throwing and he isn't much better at blocking. He did make a lot of strides this year, but I have my doubts. I'm speaking pure physical ability though and he's definately more raw. The best "catcher" in the draft was Teagarden (or however the hell you spell it). The reason I say catcher is because I think defense when I think catcher and offense is a plus. Teagarden has some offensive tools but he's a stud defensively. Hell I like the catcher out of Illinois (robinson) more than I like Clement. Once again if were talking catcher.
  17. QUOTE(OilCan @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 07:07 PM) Question for the FS/Draft experts... Do you guys/gals expect any signing difficulties, especially with the Sox re-drafting Brooks and Getz? Thanks. I think both will be easy signs. In fact, my inclination would be that Brooks worked out a pre-draft deal. I'm working on getting some info on Brooks straight from the source, but I'm sure he's pretty busy. Getz is gonna sign and quick. In fact I'd bet the Sox have most of there guys signed really fast. Cunnigham could be a tough sign, cause he's only got room to grow, imo and may take a little more money, but at the same time the Sox drafted some guys that should be easy signs to cancel it out and than the kid Cortez (SP?) that is committed to SDSU could be a tougher sign, but I think they'll get it done. Sox are one of, if not the very best team, when it comes to knowing whether a guy wants to play pro's. They almost always sign their top 20 picks or so it seems. Every once in a while they'll take a flyer on a guy (Tony Richie, Donald Veal, Moviel, and Wes Hodges for example) but usually they are really good.
  18. I've turned the corner and I'm loving this broadway selection. Plus change and curveball and he flat out hammers the zone with his fastball (inside and out) and its a pitch with good movement. He's gonna be a quick mover, although the Sox should be careful with his workload.
  19. QUOTE(Palehosefan @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 06:08 PM) According to Duane Schaffer, Lance's fastball sits anywhere from 89-94 mph and usually settles at 91-92 most games. Looks like his fastball hasn't been given enough credit. I heard it has pretty good movement as well, which is a major plus. Whether you throw 88-89 or 93-94, what matters if you have movement or some damn good secondary pitches. The only time its less important is when you throw 95 plus and even then you better have another pitch.
  20. QUOTE(daa84 @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 05:25 PM) wooa....be careful of your spelling.....you mean billy beane, the oakland GM. billy bean was a player for i believe the padres who came out and said he was gay a couple years ago Billy Beane was drafted by someone. He was a total phenom and I think your referring to Art Howe. Not sure, one of Benae/Howe was rumored to be gay (I think it was Howe). Personally I could give two cents. I never realized how much of a stud Beane was supposed to be. He was a major bust though but was supposed to have unbelievable talent.
  21. Ya, he was supposed to be one of the better baseball prospects before giving up the game for football. Has a nice arm and obviously its low mileage. He's definately raw and thats good info on him wanting to play baseball (Sox usually do a good job drafting guys that want to sign).
  22. QUOTE(daa84 @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 05:03 PM) I go to vandy and go to pretty much every game, so ive seen ryan rote (5th round) pitch dozens of times. you can see the BA scouting report before but ill tell you what i think.... in one of the best pitching staffs in the nation I would say in terms of pure stuff, rote had the second best raw stuff behind sues who went a few picks earlier, but has better stuff but less pitchability than lewis and mullins who went 102 and 105. Hes tall and has a pitchers frame. He can and should get stronger but throws plenty hard already. He came to Vandy 2 years ago and instantly inherited the closers role. His best assest is certainly his fastball which my buddy who works the gun at Vandy said he has hit 99. consistently he prolly sits low to mid 90s. hes not afraid to throw inside and hits his fair share of batters. he struggles with his command and in the one game he started this year, he threw well, but had numerous past balls. he lacks a true offspeed pitch but throws a hard tight slider that mostly moves away to righties. There is no doubt that he can dominate against hitters who cant catch up to heat. when he is on, he paints the fastball and uses his slider as his out pitch and can be untouchable, as he struck the side out to close the game quite a few times. he seemed to have a tendancy to get hit by the better hitting ball clubs, and when he got rattled he would walk batters, which lead to fastballs being laid out over the plate. In terms of his makeup he is a pretty heady player, one of the smartest off the field and in the classroom for sure. He had a reputation as being one of the hardest working guys out there and rarely did anytype of partying that would put him in bad situations. id say hes a risk but has great upside, especially as a reliever. If he wants to become a starter, he needs to develop a better offspeed pitch. in summation i would say hes a typical hard throwing righty who if he can harness his command has the ability to dominate. on another note I know he played with Paul Moviel back when he was at his JC so hoepfully thatll help his comfort level if he starts out at GF Awesome info.
  23. Check out the thread above. Its long but we discuss most everyone on there.
