White Sox Acquire Contreras for Loaiza
White Sox Acquire Contreras for Loaiza By Jason Gage July 31, 2004 The Chicago White Sox acquired right handed pitcher Jose Contreras and cash considerations from the New York Yankees in exchange for all star Esteban Loaiza. Both teams hope the respected pitcher will provide more consistency in the rotation. White Sox general manager Ken Williams, in an interview on ESPN 1000, reported that the White Sox have noticed Contreras tipping his pitches and think they have a solution to his problem. Aside from his numbers, which are mediocre, Contreras has a dynamite arm and pitched well down the stretch last year for New York, but faltered this season and at one point, was sent all the way to A Ball. Contreras was 8-5 with a 5.64 ERA with the Yankees. However, he has limited opponents to a .250 batting average. He has very high strikeout totals and a low walk total, which means his ERA is higher then it should be. Loaiza goes to New York after earning a spot on the All Star team each of the past two years. Loaiza will be a free agent at the end of the season and reports have the Padres as being one of the interested parties. The Yankees hope he can add stability to the rotation and return to last years form, which netted him 21 wins. However, this season has been a different one for Loaiza. He has noticed a drop in velocity and has failed to pitch inside with the reckless abandon he did last year. This has allowed hitters to sit on his cutter and lean over the plate on outside pitches. The results are a good 9-5 record, but a not so nice 4.86 ERA in 21 starts. FS Perspective: In my opinion, this was a safe deal for both teams. Contreras needed out of New York and Loiaza has handled some pressure during his career. Neither pitcher was performing well for their respeted teams and a change of scenery is best, especially for Contreras. However, this move has a great deal of upside for the White Sox. No one doubts Contreras stuff, plus he is signed till 2006, which means Contreras, Buehrle, and Garcia will be mainstays in the White Sox rotation. You could also include young right hander Jon Garland in this mix.

Tick Tick TIck
Maybe Tony Armas or Preston Wilson, but I don't see much anything happening. I think this offseason the Sox will be really active on the trade front, changing the makeup of the team. And book it that Maggs and Elo are most likely gone. If Maggs asking price comes down, you may see him back though, imo. I also think you'll see quite a few new position players.

Elo Could of Been a Met
I think the reason we won't see any big trades go down, is to be honest, you have to start thinking now, this team may not do it. While acquiring a guy would be great, the team doesn't really have the pieces to get the difference makers necessary. I think the only thing thats left is a deal involving some major league players for other major league players and then a smaller deal with another team involving a few minor leaguers. Kind of like the Dodgers did yesterday.

Who Are These Guys???
I'm thinking thats right Mn, but I've never seen him pitch either. He wasn't used in any of the Kanny games I saw.

Elo Could of Been a Met
Now I'm purely speculating here, but if the Mets in one way, shape or form, offered Scott Kazmir for Esteban Loaiza then KW should of accepted it, regardless for what it meant for the team. The acquisition of Kazmir could A, add a chip to deal for another stud pitcher, or preferably, open up the gates to deal some of the Sox other pitchers and keep McCarthy and Kazmir for the future. I realize they are playing for now, but Elo is doing nothing to show he deserves that. The Sox are doing nothing to show they should be playing for it all. I think they will stand pat, and maybe make a deal during the waiver deadline, if and only if they get back into this race and start playing good baseball. If not, they'll keep guys like Buerhle, Garcia, and Garland and you'll see a lot of rebuilding, not where they won't compete next year, but to the fact that Ozzie can have a team that fits his style more, persay. I also found it interesting that Ozzie was pissed when he thought they were going to deal Sweeney. That tells me he must be a heck of a player. To think an A baller made that type of impression on the manager really says something. Oh ya, I will stick to my guns, Borchard should be dealt and should of been dealt over Reed if in fact the Mariners would of taken him instead. I don't understand the organizations fascination and this has nothing to do with his play with the White Sox, but everything to do with his lack of sucess the past few years in a hitters park known as Charlotte.
