  1. QUOTE (shipps @ Mar 6, 2017 -> 07:27 AM) This is truly a make or break year for Pace. He can survive it if he makes some good moves but to ensure at least another 3-5 years of tenure he will have to hit it big. Other then having like an 0-16 season where all of our free agent / draft moves are bust, I presume Pace is here for at least another year. Most reports seem to indicate that Fox is likely going to be here another year as well with Pace likely getting at least 5 years. I don't like Pace for missing the mark on maximizing Jeffrey's value, but I can respect the fact that he didn't want to pay X for a player and didn't overpay. Curious to see what we do at QB cause I really have no idea what we are going to do.
  2. Couldn't believe Iowa pulled that game out at Wiscy at the end. Figured they were dead in the water. Bubble hopes remain....they will be crushed when we lay an egg against Penn State on Sunday.
  3. Beat the warriors. That said, Warriors missed a ton of shots (so did the Bulls though). I swear both teams had a vortex going on in the basket cause there were tons of shots on each side that were going down 2/3rd's. Zipser has some stones...huge 3 late in that game. Butler hasn't seemed like his usual self, but he has got to statistically be one of the best players late in games in the league. Edit: I almost forgot...I have to give Portis a lot of credit. Nice game out of him. He was a beast on the boards and helped provide some nice spacing. Rondo has been playing really good basketball for a while. Actually, this team has only lost 2 games where Butler played since the drama went down (and one of those games was the Phoenix game where Butler played but was clearly hurt). Wade has stepped up his game a lot too.
  4. We better not give Glennon or any of these FA QB's long-term guaranteed money. That would be idiotic. I'm okay going with a Glennon or Taylor as long as it is short-term and we are still planning on drafting a QB in the second round that is going to be groomed. We need to invest in the QB spot and continue to do so until we get it right.
  5. When does free agency start? And wite, do you not think that highly of Gilmore?
  6. QUOTE (Yoda @ Mar 1, 2017 -> 10:49 AM) Our baby has a doctor’s appointment this Friday with an eye specialist. His primary doctor noticed something was off when he was using his retinoscope. We’ve also noticed he doesn’t concentrate on mommy and daddy when we try to get his attention. He always seems fascinated at something up on the ceiling but this could be attributed to something going on with his eyes. Least to say, we’re a bit concerned. I hope everything is okay!!!
  7. QUOTE (bmags @ Mar 1, 2017 -> 11:40 AM) So you go with Utah, and another went with Utah too. Looks like the lowest fees. How do you balance lowest fees vs. in state tax deduction? For me, there was no state-tax deduction (doesn't exist in California). If I had the deduction, I would have went with the CA plan (because it would have off-set the reduced fees).
  8. Steve...sorry to hear that and hope the procedure goes well!!! I've had something on my skin that I've been needing to get checked out (but am semi afraid to), so your story is motivation for me to do the same. Hopefully whatever news I receive from the process is positive.
  9. QUOTE (bmags @ Mar 1, 2017 -> 07:46 AM) This 529 stuff makes me so anxious. Literally every day I read one article saying its a great idea then the next its "instead put it in a more general fund that you can use for cross purposes". I think if you have extra money, you put it in a 529 and segregate it. If you don't and have worriers that you might need the money at some time in the future, then it might be better to put it in a more general fund so that you can leverage it in the future (vs. paying the penalties). Not saying you should leverage it, but unknown items can come up and you would hate to pay fees in those cases. The other obvious protection is, if your kids get scholarships (or don't go to college), etc, having it in a 529 might not be as helpful / useful as you expected (and then you have to pay penalties to recapture or save it in those accounts for grand kids).
  10. Total bummer if Durant is out that long. Seems like about a month.
  11. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Mar 1, 2017 -> 08:41 AM) Jimmy has played 2 NFL games and was a Day 2 prospect out of an FCS school. I'd be stunned if they get the 1st round pick they are seeking. I believe that 4 QB's go in the first round as well. I'd rather take one of them then trade a boatload of picks for Jimmy and pay him. I am a Jimmy fan and would be fine with the move (as long as Bears obviously believed in him). I wouldn't give up anything but a late 1st (preferably a 2nd). The wild card is you obviously have to pay him which is a risk that doesn't exist with a QB. Part of it is, how safe / secure do Fox/Pace feel. If I feel safe/secure, I'll take the rookie QB and if I don't like him, I can find a veteran later...if I think I need to win sooner vs. later, I probably roll the dice on Jimmy G. A happy medium might be taking a QB in the 2nd and trading a 3rd for AJ McCarron.
  12. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Mar 1, 2017 -> 08:09 AM) That's total posturing. He's not worth a 1st. They aren't getting a 1st. They have no real leverage either. They can keep him next year but then he'll walk in free agency after the season. Patriots will receive a 2019 comp pick in that scenario. I'd call their bluff. Sam Bradford got a haul...Jimmy G has more upside then Bradford, imo. I think a lot of people tend to undervalue what it will ultimately take to get a QB. Just like I tend to think we'll see a run on QB's in the 1st round, despite all the current reports that there isn't one worth drafting in the top 10. We'll see.
  13. I presume this is the Patriots trying to drive leverage, that said, none of us know what their actual valuation of Jimmy is and what their plans are. They clearly could maximize value for him in a trade (to help them win now) or they could say, look, we need a QB and this is our guy and we need to find a way to keep him here two more years until Brady retires. For all they know next year Brady's arm will fall off and then what do they do if they move Jimmy (obviously they did draft a guy relatively early last year, but what is there long term view of him vs. Jimmy G, etc). I did note the Pats did not franchise Hightower and are going to let him test the market.
  14. QUOTE (shipps @ Feb 28, 2017 -> 02:26 PM) Maybe Hahns plan to get the top of the elite guys is flawed then? He should be trying to get quantity instead of quality? Thanks for making me doubt the whole damn rebuilding plan. Remember though...the not top 10 guys consistent of 90 guys, so higher bust rate. In general, I tend to view it as you want as many top 100 guys as possible (more elite better, but also remember, the ranking is a static ranking and variables can move relatively quickly, especially as guys can explode onto / off of the scene relatively quickly (especially if they have major flaws, etc). Prospect evaluation has a combination of art and science and it certainly isn't a definitive thing and there are a lot of variables, including the fact, that sometimes, people can just be flat lucky.
  15. I thought this was an interest read (dates back to 2014). Most curious was the 2007 list and who was listed as a bust (vs. say a Brandon Wood / Cameron Maybin). In general, always decent reality check looking at these type of lists and also even the other noteable guys from top 100 and often times it is the other people in top 100 who emerge better. http://www.sportsonearth.com/article/67202234/
  16. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Feb 27, 2017 -> 09:36 PM) What he have, a whopping 20 PA at age 21 in MLB? Just a protip for Sox fans: we haven't had a position player prospect this highly rated by every service since probably...well, ever. Relax. Let the kid develop. His bat is gonna play. If he can make more plays like he did today at 2B he's a star. Probably since Joe Borchard (I think Borchard is the highest rate position prospect the Sox have had since Frank Thomas). Gordon Beckham probably would have gotten pretty high on lists if he hadn't gotten moved up so fast that he kind of lost "prospect" status before ever getting to take advantage of where he stood (but at his peak...he probably would have been top 10-15..again not where Moncada ranks). Pitching wise, I believe Jon Rauch was the highest rated pitching prospect the organization has had until Giolito (from a pure publication perspective).
  17. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Feb 28, 2017 -> 01:58 PM) I really wouldn't be opposed to Moncada getting a full year in Triple-A to be honest. Maybe a September call-up and then called up June 2018 (if he's producing) and then having him for the remainder of the year plus 6 years. If I was going to say any of those guys took a bit longer, I'd have pegged it to be Moncada. That said, I still say it would be dissapointing if they weren't all on the major league roster come the summer.
  18. QUOTE (Tony @ Feb 28, 2017 -> 01:31 PM) The really lame, but true answer is whenever they are ready. I know that isn't what you're totally asking, but my point is because the White Sox have come out and said this is going to be a longer process, this isn't a Jimmy Rollins/Tim Anderson thing where it's "Well if we can get three good months of out Rollins, maybe Anderson can come up by the deadline and we'll be in good shape.." I want to see these guys on the major league roster when they have very little left to prove in MiLB. If Moncada is just crushing in AAA by June, bring him up and start the process. If Giolito takes the entire year in AAA to work on things, I guess so be it. Certainly there will be some disappoint with some of these guys, but in my head, I don't have any estimated arrival dates for any of them. Lets see what happens in AA-AAA over the first three months of the year, then take a look at the bigger picture. All that said, I would be surprised / dissapointed if by the summer, Lopez / Giolito / Fullmer / Moncada were not on the major league roster. I agree with you, they shouldn't be up until they are ready, but I would expect, that given each of their time frames and existing minor league experience, that we would be targeting having those guys all up during the second half of this year.
  19. QUOTE (fathom @ Feb 28, 2017 -> 12:33 PM) Yep surprised by how many predicting 75 or more wins If we don't trade Q and Robertson....I think we win 75 or more.
  20. QUOTE (fathom @ Feb 28, 2017 -> 12:20 PM) Haha can't wait for people to freak out If people freak out about a guy who is 20 pitching in an early spring training game, they are nuts. No one expects Kopech to be even close to the big league roster at this point. If anything, I'd think people should be excited that he flashed some plus curves and obviously demonstrated that his velocity is real.
  21. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Feb 28, 2017 -> 08:09 AM) Alshon Jefferys injury history is extremely overblown. He had one year where he was consistently injured Yep. If it weren't for his suspension (and I realize, his suspension was an issue, but not injury related), he'd have played in every game in 3 of the last 4 seasons. Yes, he's had some injuries and had trouble practicing at times, but in general, the guy has played. I'm okay with the Bears deciding he isn't worth their resources, etc...what I'm not okay in is how they mismanaged the asset and ended up getting nothing for him. Alshon is too good of a player to just let walk (without at least getting a 3rd or 4th round pick).
  22. I figured you'd make a smartass Hawkeye comment in here since I presume they will be NIT bound.
  23. Is Tmobile doing for free again this year?
