QUOTE (napa_soxfan @ Aug 30, 2016 -> 03:19 PM) Big ol glass of wine on me for any Soxtalk brethren (or sistren) coming to Napa Valley. Soxtalk has been my greatest source of entertainment (outside of music and the occasional boob) for years. We're a miserable lot of late, but one uniquely common bond keeps the love alive. Do you work in the wine business?

Awful. Injuries are so brutal in football.

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 30, 2016 -> 02:43 PM) Robertson for Puig makes a ton of sense Except there is no way no contending team would have claimed Robertson well before he got to the Dodgers. Someone in the AL would have likely put a claim on him.

A Venezuelan winter league team has offered Tebow a contract. I'm actually curious to see how he does. Odds are against him and I realize he's probably doing this for publicity (as is the winter league team), but he clearly is a talented athlete. I still find it odd that he is going this route vs. just trying to become a TE / RB, which would have seemed to be a more natural move. I always find it interesting when top notch athletes try other sports.

Our record vs. the three central teams above us
Chisoxfn replied to Greg Hibbard's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Aug 30, 2016 -> 01:00 PM) How many managers have lasted 5 full seasons with a winning percentage as bad as Robin's in the last 30 years? Norv Turner? That said, talent level was pretty bad more often then not. It is all a moot point because Robin is clearly gone (barring an absurd September run) and there is zero chance Robin was the difference between making the postseason and not in any of the seasons he was here (so while I agree Robin is an issue and it is time to go, if you want to focus too much attention their, you actually pass the buck on what really matters, and that is the poor rosters, etc). Understand that it can't all happen overnight, but the team has clearly had some missteps in recent years and what has been a relatively unsuccessful strategy. It will be interesting to see what happens this off-season (especially since they have been more vocal then past years leading up to the off-season regarding everyone being able to see a clear direction based upon the moves we make). -
Our record vs. the three central teams above us

QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Aug 30, 2016 -> 12:56 PM) Yep. For sure. 2016 Sox vs. Central (gotta include twins) - 20-30 2016 Sox vs. everyone else - 43-37 2015 Sox vs. Central - 32-44 2015 Sox vs. everyone else - 44-42 2014 Sox vs. Central - 33-43 2014 Sox vs. everyone else - 40-46 2013 Sox vs. Central - 26-50 (holy s***!) 2013 Sox vs. everyone else - 37-49 2012 Sox vs. Central - 37-35 2012 Sox vs. everyone else - 48-42 Robin Ventura vs. Central - 148-202 Robin Ventura vs. everyone else - 212-216 That is pretty staggering. Is it coincidence (bad matchups within division) or is it worse advanced scouting / analysis where we lose advantages against teams we play more vs. our inability to adjust (vs. adjustments other teams make)? -
QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Aug 30, 2016 -> 09:25 AM) http://www.brooksbaseball.net/outcome.php?...16&s_type=2 This chart illustrates this well. He's used his changeup more often in August than in any other month of his career, by far. This month he's thrown his change 16.95% of the time, while his second-highest month in usage is June of last year at 11.62%. He has been a legitimate three-pitch pitcher this month. Great stuff.

Band of Brothers (does it count)? If so, it is easily Band of Brothers, followed by Game of Thrones, followed by Entourage.

QUOTE (JohnCangelosi @ Aug 29, 2016 -> 11:49 AM) You know if we all met each other in person we would probably get along or at least not hold each other in contempt so much. I have met one guy on this board who you called out and can say he's a good guy. I am sure most posters are. This is probably too much disclosure, but I have a list of personal favorite posters and Dick Allen is very near the very top of my list (and Caufield adds a lot of interesting ideas to the fire as well and has perspectives from his life in baseball). I also, am a pretty open when it comes to the general site and in reality, we are all Sox fans rooting for one thing, which is why it should ultimately be easy to focus on the debate and not the personal attacks and when things get snarky / too heated or you can't see logically with one person or another, then you need to take a step back and not make those posts. PS: DA and Caufield are also Hawkeye fans, which is a plus.

QUOTE (shipps @ Aug 29, 2016 -> 06:05 AM) Obviously things dont look very bright for the Bears this year so far however I do put a lot of stock in their capability to coach a team up. They will be better than last year and they will get better as they go along. Unless every damn starter gets injured which also seems like a real possibility. The problem is, long term sustained success is pinned on a QB and I have no idea who that QB will be going forward (Cutler is getting up there).
-
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 27, 2016 -> 12:01 PM) Nobody in this thread has said the Bears will do much this year, I don't know why you guys are acting like you expect playoffs and this preseason game is dashing your hopes. I'm like you. This season will have its up's and down's and I expect the team to be competitive, but I still think we have a huge void of talent vs. other competitive teams and still need to identify our longer term solution at QB (yes, I still think we should have drafted Paxton Lynch).
-
QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 27, 2016 -> 10:42 AM) pretty sure we're looking at a rebuilding year I think we are a 7 win team +/2 wins, with us being more likley a 9 win team then say a 5 win team (unless Cutler gets hurt, in which case, I think we are a 2-4 win team). I fully expect we are taking a QB next year (whether it is signing Jimmy or drafting someone early).

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 26, 2016 -> 07:44 AM) It is the oddest correction I know of. After nearly a decade, the economy isn't healthy enough to sustain an actual interest rate. Numbers don't agree with each other on how healthy the economy actually is. By traditional measures, the economy should be overheating, but we are still sitting on minimal growth and inflation. Correction. The US economy is absolutely healthy enough to sustain interest rate hikes, however, the global economy is not and as a result, the fed is in an uncomfortable spot where it really can't raise rates (at least not much) given the global economy and global interest rates.

So much misinformation out there on Puig, hard to know where teams really stand. I just know that I will be on record that I'd be all for him. Then again, I've said it for a while and the price I would have paid for him would have been much greater a year ago, so probably a good thing the Sox don't listen to me when it comes to Puig. I do know he is the type of lottery ticket who could be a HUGE HUGE spark plug for the team (if he can play to his tools), but he's also been the guy of declining metrics with injury issues for the past couple of seasons too.

The White Sox (and this is the same with recent teams), are too all for nothing, whether it is their starting pitching, their bullpen, or their lineup. We have some stars (Sale / Q / Eaton), but we also have a lot of nothing's, whether it is Frazier (when he doesn't hit a homer) or quite a few of the pieces in the pen (who have been largely inconsistent and poor performers...depth here has been atrocious) and clearly Shields / non Miguel Gonzalez 5th starters (Latos first few starts not withstanding) and that is a lot of "holes" and it is hard to win with that type of holes (i.e., catcher, CF, 4th / 5th spots in rotation, good portion of bullpen, DH). I'm not even calling out Frazier / Abreu who have both played well below historical averages and Lawrie hasn't exactly been amazing (but by definition he's been better then most). So to win, the Sox formally is very clear, get elite pitching from the rotation (including Rodon when he is hot) and you have a good shot at winning 3 games out of 5, however, when the lineup has so many holes (as does the bullpen), you end up being in a pretty tough spot to have a good enough conversion rate on those games (despite some real stars). Rodon coming together for next year (as a front of the rotation guy) would be huge as it would strengthen the odds in those areas, but you still have to look at the back of the rotation as being questionable with a lineup and bullpen that can't make up for that "questionable" in its current state. The equation of what to add becomes tough so the margin of error (or luck factor) to actually be a playoff team really becomes small, imo.
-
QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 28, 2016 -> 04:04 PM) Probably coincidence but it seems catcher chemistry matters more to Rodons performance than others. The flowers switch last year and Narvaez this year seem to show up quite a bit I think this has most to do with Rodon's continued evolution / development. The expectations for Rodon to start the year were ridiculous, especially for a guy who had the command issues / inconsistency that he has. That takes time to work through and we are seeing what we all should have expected (and something very consistent with my posts at the start of the year), that we would see greatness and junk from Rodon and as the season progressed, we'd start to see him turn a corner and I believe we are seeing that corner turn and next year, expectations should be higher. The stuff is fantastic, but the command is coming.

Feel free to discuss certain rumors about the club potentially being for sale (albeit, these rumors appear to be largely unsubstantiated).

Bernstein: Sources say White Sox might be for sale

This thread was identified as having too many personal attacks. While the subject of the content is important and thread worthy, I'm closing this particular thread and access to fire back to some of the comments which were made to put an end to those type of responses. New thread will be opened where people can talk about the actual topic. -
This thread waddled into non-stop personal attacks, etc. I'm closing it to close out some of the ridiculous comments that have been within. New thread will be opened where people can talk about the prospect we acquired while being mindful of the rules.

You Personally attack a poster and you will be suspended. The level of discourse that I've seen on this site the past month has been atrocious and while the White Sox front office might accept that kind of performance, Soxtalk does not accept that type of blather on here from its poster. If you want personally attack a poster, you WILL be suspended. I don't care if you are a mod, admin, etc, ABSOLUTELY NO PERSONAL ATTACKS. PERIOD. END OF DISCUSSION. Note: This does not mean you can't debate or argue, but you debate the facts. And if you get to the point of trolling back and forth and can't ignore people (DA / Caufield, I'll call you out as the obvious example), then you need to put each other on ignore and move on (there are others). PS: I happen to like both DA and Caufield the posters, so I'm not calling out your posts, just calling out your distaste of each other (and I don't care who started it). For once and for all, put each other on ignore.

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Aug 26, 2016 -> 04:47 PM) He's 25 in AA. Let's not get carried away. He does throw left handed however so he may stick around. Part of why he is older is due to missing time from Tommy John.

QUOTE (shipps @ Aug 25, 2016 -> 01:15 PM) I dont get why this was ever allowed and since it is why other teams havent done what the Chargers are doing. The majority are cutthroat and squeeze every dime that they can out of players. The Chargers are obviously being jag bags but other teams are too. Other teams do it with first round picks, it just isn't normally done with top 5-10 picks. Later on in the 1st round, there are more teams that do it.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 25, 2016 -> 12:25 PM) I would be one of the first to say in the real world results trump effort. We like to tell our kids that they go hand in hand, and often they do. Sometimes they do not. They are trying to not be mediocre. They haven't done a good job of it. Moving on from KW and RH makes a lot of sense, but it doesn't appear like that is in the cards at least for another year. That said, the reason we tell that to our kids is, it is hard to actually have success without effort. Effort does not guarantee success, but it certainly is one key ingredient to it.
