2023-24 NFL Season Thread

I see a scenario where this happen. Fields has 3 out of his last 4 games as being above average. If he can stack another 3 out of 4 above average games, than I absolutely see a scenario where you change coaching staffs but continue to basically build up the whole rest of the roster (maybe taking a QB in 2nd round or something like that). Poles does this though he has to also get a future 1st (so move down from one of their top picks) to ensure he can play that card right. It isn't an awful move at this point. Now if Fields struggles from here on out / is mediocre, than obviously you can't go that way. But I'm not going to lie - trade down at 1 - than draft a Marvin Harrison and a Dlinemen or an LT (if Braxton Jones doesn't look good) with your other pick. FA center, maybe some more money on defense and another playmaker or two plus a slew of other picks. If you squint you can see a roster, with quality draft execution - that starts to look pretty good. -

If you fire the coach - draft a QB or can stick with Fields (and punt on a QB for another year). If you don't fire the coach, than you can stick with Fields. I really don't see any scenario at this point, sans them basically winning out, where they don't make a move with Flus. I really would be all-in on Harbaugh if I were the Bears. And basically its up to Warren to decide whether Poles and Harbaugh could work together or not. If Harbaugh wanted to gauge Fields for a year while they wait on QB, fine, cause he's the type of guy that will be here for multiple years. In that case though - you need to do something similar to what Bears did this year - where you are trading one of our top picks for a future 1st (to ensure you have ammo to get a QB if who you have on roster doesn't pan out). -

Yeah nothing better than Fields just balling out the rest of the season. -
It makes sense. They have bforttnarley need to cause there is no other way up. I expect a lot of guys deal - including Eloy and Yoan too. Not sure they get much though.

I would love AJ though.

Defense played great. Yeah it’s Bryce Young who is still finding his leg, but 6 points ignoring that special teams td. -

How is that not fair catch interference or a late hit or something? -

It looks like he is scared after what happened in 4th quarter vs Saints. And it is making him even more likely to throw picks. -

2024 Offseason Plan - "Try" to Compete Edition

If they trade Eloy, go get Rhys Hoskins and take a shot you get value from him post ACL. He has ton of power, good obp and I presume will be cheaper. -
It is obvious one has to go at a minimum.

2024 Offseason Plan - "Try" to Compete Edition

Did he say that today - that is actually very refreshing to here. To be honest - outside of keeping Grifol, I can't really argue with much he has done since he took the job. I do recognize keeping Grifol is a huge component - but its also fair to wonder whether he had a choice in the matter anyway? I have never got the impression that JR wants to pay a mgr to not manage. Will he eventually - yes, but after one season, not unless it is an abjunct disaster (and yes '23 was a disaster - but isn't Bevington the only time he has done it in his era - thinking back to Bulls/Sox ownership)? -
So if Sox hired him - would we be happy. He doesn't have a ton of experience but obviously maximized his career given what I perceived as a more limited set of tools. My one caveat is - I generally lean to the school of, catchers make the best managers.

This - if Bellinger's struggles were driven by health and he is able to be healthy - he very well could have a few massively productive years (his peak was well above average). With that said - his volatility of performance is massive so you could just as well get bad Bellinger and bad Bellinger is really bad. I know I wouldn't take that bet long-term - but I get that a team would. He is above average defensively, has massive power, bats from the left side, and is 28. -
I didn’t know whether it was not getting good returns or Bulls were asking for the moon. I do think if they blow it up they can get a bunch of assets - albeit split out over years plus have cap space which will allow them to be facilitator. I don’t see Akme doing that though.

Extremely well said -
And I should state - I agree. I don't know if Donovan is a great coach, but he's proven in his career he isn't a bad coach. Every coach needs talent and the right talent - this team IS not that. Although I give major credit for him to have a defense that is playing this well despite having Derozan and Zach getting this many minutes. Pretty incredible to be honest.

It is really evident to me that Zach & Demar don't work. One plays in tempo the other is half court. One is bad in tempo, the other is bad in half court. Literally they couldn't have paired a worse duo together. And you saw it last night - the movement and spacing was great in transition and team ran a ton when Demar was not in. Demar comes in it slows down. Not saying who they should pick - and in my mind they should blow it all up - but having both is literally the worse possible decision because they parts DON'T work. IF you want to try something different while still attempting to compete (again - not what I would propose) than trade one of them. Trade Derozan for a 4 and a PG or something (no idea who). Or trade Lavine and just get a ton of assets and go from there. Than if that doesn't work - trade the other later in the season. But status QUO does NOT work. It is so evident to everyone but the Bulls front office for whatever reason.

This - I think the elite QB's would have been there wherever they were. However, there are good QB's who wouldn't be good without the right surroundings. It seems like there are a number of those QB's today. I don't think Brock Purdy is Purdy without being in a situation with right talent, etc. In fact - I think the QB position is one where right now - beyond the few absolutely elite guys, the margin for the rest of the players has shrunk considerably, especially at the NFL level - where the talent, system/coaching - become very critical as well around your success. I think of someone like Russel Wilson in Seattle - he has talent (despite his Denver struggles) - but every part of that system, staff, and parts (including strong D / ground game / conservative approach) helped situate Wilson to be the best he could be. Jared Goff is interesting. Talk about a steal for Lions when they got him. And he is coming from a place where the coach/system is off the charts good too. One player who intrigues me a ton is Kyler Murray. He had a great start of his career and did it with in my mind one of the worse NFL coaches in a while. That system was awful and Murray still had plenty of good seasons. Now there were work ethic concerns, etc, which are on Murray, but If Cardinals quickly "IR" him, I could see him as the type of guy who ressurects his career, ala Goff somewhere else. -

He had an awful quarter - but he is super easy to root for and I still think he has some really positive qualities. It's interesting - what makes a team give a longer run to say him than a Gardner Minshew who clearly is a very good back-up but nothing more. Romo somehow got that run despite whatever limitations prevented him from being drafted. Tyson's work ethic is good and he has thrown some really good balls and thrown guys open really well. Where do you draw the line and say - no he isn't good enough or do you go, wow, just imagine what a year under his belt and where he could go. Cause I'll be honest - I have no idea. With Fields - I know exactly why you give him time - you see it in the unbelievable physical attributes, but at the same time, you have pause and wonder whether he can minimize the negative plays (you know he can make the big plays) but can he take the easy plays and minimize the bad ones. Note: Bagent hasn't minimized the bad ones, given how many turnovers he has done. He has minimized the sacks though.
