  1. I'm going to enjoy this one day at a time.
  2. QUOTE (Hawk09 @ May 29, 2012 -> 09:09 AM) Long time Sox fan. 1. Hawk is an old school baseball guy,no doubt. But you know what? Baseball is the oldest sport in this country, and is one sport that is completely timeless, which is why stats are so big...every generation compares with prior generation, and comparable stat analysis is actually valid(cept for PEDs era). That is why Hawks little antedotes are relevant. Nothing changes in this game...there is nothing really new either. 2. Fans that dislike Hawk have quit listening to him, imo. He has altered his game the last couple of years. With the advent of the strike zone box, he has almost completely quit complaining about strikes and balls...cept when the ump is missing outside the zone box....it is a big improvement on the telecasts, and I am sure that they producers did it with this intent in mind. Hawk and Stoney have meshed better this year also. Some fans are inventing friction and this notion that Hawk talks over Stoney constantly....not true. Occasionally, sure, but those critics take a man who is on the air probably almost 500 hours a year and nitpick a handful of mistakes or misplays. WTF? Believe it or not, it is hard to be perfect 500 hours a year on national tv. 3. I do think that familiarity breeds contempt. Fans like me that watch virtually every game, either get sick of hearing the catchphrases or,like me, they just let it flow over them, concentrating on the pictures with the familiar rythmn of the backdrop of his normal calls. Sorry, but I still get excited over homers, even in the regular season....some seem to think it is ho-hum. Yesterdays homer by Dunn was huge, and Hawk knew it, the way that moore was pitching. People that know baseball knew that also. 4. Hawk is a homer....I like it. It does not define his whole broadcast, tho. He and Stoney have had some good discussions on air this year on the science and art of the game. Like Dunn hitting off of the catcher...I have never heard that before...guessing pitches off of the guy doing the catching vs the pitcher....good stuff. There have been a number of those kinds of discussions this year, and I have learned something new. My vote....Hawk and Stoney forever. I'd take Hawk, but they need to partner him with someone different.

    Job Hunt Thread

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ May 29, 2012 -> 06:38 AM) If you're an engineering or business student at a top university you should be leaving with a job offer, it may not be what you want to do but you should have some form of job. Personally, I used a family connection for my first internship after freshman year which helped set up my resume for on campus recruiting the next year. I ended up getting an internship after my sophomore year and continued that internship into the next year and into a full time job. I still have relatively low experience in my field (Identity Access & Management) and it's not even work that I love to do, but it's a good field to be in and I love where I am working with plenty of opportunities to help my advance to where I want to be. Even though I had accepted FT before leaving my internship last summer, I still received around 20 personalized emails from recruiters looking for IS/IT majors, and these were all great companies. EDIT: Yes I used a family connection at first, but the opportunities are out there and if you line yourself up right (join professional student organizations, network, practice for interviews, get on campus leadership experience) then you shouldn't have too tough of a time finding a FT job in the business/engineering fields. About 90% of my business friends are working FT right out of school, about 70% of those will be making $55k or higher, and about 15% will be making $65k or higher. I got my job because I had strong grades, networked, was involved in on campus honors organizations, and worked during college. It led to internships and eventually full time offers. It wasn't because I knew someone (unless you count me going out and networking with people). No one in my family has worked in Corporate America nor is anyone in my family and accountant or CPA. What I've done since then is completely related to me developing myself, working hard, and getting lucky to be in the right place at the right time (e.g., working primarily with very good people who take time in your development). I have a long ways to go to get to where I want to be in life, but I think telling people you are lucky to get a job out of college isn't exactly correct. Albeit, for different industries, things are different. But in my industry, most people earned their way to the firms they got into (there are always exceptions to that). I should also point out that in no way am I saying I'm the greatest accountant in the world. That is blasphemy and crazy talk, but I am going to pat myself on the back for getting to where I've gotten thus far.
  4. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 29, 2012 -> 07:51 AM) Maybe a revolving booth is the way to go. He sounded re-energized when Stone first joined the booth too. In general, I've always liked Hawk. Once Stone joined the booth something changed. The chemistry between the two is horrible and I just don't like Hawk and Stoney together.
  5. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ May 28, 2012 -> 04:28 PM) Today was very enjoyable. It's always fun to have Wimpy up there for a series. Having Whimpy back made me enjoy Hawk. I like the two of them together.
  6. Freaking awesome Tyler. Congrats.
  7. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 25, 2012 -> 03:46 PM) watch snob spotted ^^^^ Thats why I stopped showering....until your a few feet away, you won't notice the stench.
  8. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 25, 2012 -> 06:37 AM) A game? The Pacers took 2 and the Celtics are only going to take 1? Without Bosh, this could easily go 7. The Celtics are simply a more disciplined team than the Pacers. They can get under the Heat's skin too...but they will also run smarter offense and defense. The Pacers are better then Boston.
  9. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 22, 2012 -> 01:58 PM) With MLB.TV on the PS3, I get to hear a lot of announcers. It's like a breath of fresh air, listening to people who are younger than 100 years old talk about the game and reference players from the 90s, and have conversations that engage me that I haven't heard a million times before - Hawk doesn't do this. Hawk's schtick - I am finally tired of it. You could just have a Hawkbot at this point and really have no idea he wasn't actually there. Cue up his catch phrases and have someone record player names in his voice. As for Stone, I think he's brilliant, and with the right sportscaster he can be great, but with Hawk it just doesn't work. The reason is simple - no one with Hawk will work. He always turns it into a dick measuring contest, cuts the other broadcaster off, and winds up telling me about some garbage player from the Red Sox in the late 60s. The tv feed needs a breath of fresh air, and someone who went to broadcasting school, a real broadcaster, doing the play by play, and then save the homerism and the baseball references for a guy like Frank Thomas to be the color analyst. I have spent my entire lifetime listening to Hawk. I have laughed at his calls for years. I have yelled "HE GAWN" "STRETCH" "HEEYEEESSS" "DAT GUMMIT" "YOU GOTTA BE BLEEPIN' ME" - I have enjoyed it. (not so much the "HELL YEAH" though) I am so f***ing ready for it to end and to finally have an on screen duo that entertains me. Let the flaming begin. I loved Hawk growing up but his act has wore thin and his announcing just isn't up to snuff anymore. I pretty much refuse to listen to the Sox fees so I can stay away from him. In fact, I can't stand Stoney either. They are one of the worse crews in all of baseball.
  10. QUOTE (iamshack @ May 15, 2012 -> 08:39 PM) I had Sprint before AT&T, and while their service is good, their customer service is brutal...they make AT&T seen like the American Express of cellular carriers. A couple years back Sprint compeltely revamped its customer service department. The few times I've needed them, they have been great to work with.
  11. At this point, I have to stop doubting the Spurs.
  12. QUOTE (Jake @ May 19, 2012 -> 05:53 PM) Nothing Brent Morel has done at the MLB level has convinced me he'll be a good major league ballplayer. He's had what, 800 at bats now? Not much production in there. If he has been hurt for over a year now, it seems unlikely he'll get healthy. Except the last month of last year where he crushed it. Then this spring where he started off strong again, only to have a back injury which has obliterated his swing. * I don't know that to be the case. If the back injury really happened within the last week or 2, then okay, he did suck for a month on his own, but it seems that wasn't the case.
  13. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 19, 2012 -> 05:25 PM) I can't say for certain, but I'm going to guess it's been a whole year thing coming to a head now. He put some good swings on the ball earlier in the year but then the strikeouts started. He has never, ever piled up the strikeouts like he has this year...and my guess is that's related to his back...not able to get down and rotate fully on the ball strongly. Which at least means Morel might have a chance to be a solid player (not that I would have written him off based upon 1.5 months worth of play). The important thing now is for him to take time off and heal. No point in having him play, given the fact that he's been completely unproductive with the injury, until he's 100% or close to 100%. I really believe Morel will be a solid big league 3rd baseman. In fact, I can't think of a player I'd be more wrong about then Morel (based upon the 1st month and a half of the season). He's too solid all around not to be a big leaguer for a # of years.
  14. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 19, 2012 -> 02:33 PM) Rogers had an article yesterday which basically said the 2 things Ventura changed right away was the free steals they used to give opponents and the enormous discrepancy in HBP. One thing he didn't mention was the Sox now actually do some 3-0 hitting now. You don't have to hit the opponent to get them to stop hitting your guys. They just have to know that if they do hit your guys, someone is going to pay. I really like Ventura and it dissapoints me that we were stuck with Ozzie who gave more about what was going on in the stands than what was going on in the field (especially from an attention to detail standpoint).
  15. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 19, 2012 -> 02:43 PM) The difference in his swing the 2 days right after his cortisone shot was palpable. Then it went away rapidly, and within a few days we're talking about his back again. His back has to be in bad shape right now. The question is how long was it bothering him for? Is it something that happened and had to do with his poor play? The optimist in me hopes that is the case. His swing looked really good in spring (I realize its spring) but the swing looked good, which is what I care about (vs. results).
  16. QUOTE (Brian @ May 15, 2012 -> 05:38 PM) Ill call my bud, David Stern, about another rigging. And for the 1st time in NBA history, the NBA Champion Chicago Bulls were accidentally included within the lottery and won the 1st overall draft pick.
  17. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 14, 2012 -> 12:16 PM) If we are talking Jake Peavy, we are going to have to pick up money to make it a guy worthwhile anyway. I don't think so. Dude is pitching amazing. If I were a team in contention, he's the type of guy that puts you over the top. His arm may fall off but given his collective work through the 1st 6 weeks of the season, a contender would be foolish not to take a chance (especially since even a small market team could potentially due it since you don't tie yourself to a long-term deal).
  18. Why. I hope Lovie excels and the Bears win the superbowl.

I like most Abrams stuff. Not alcatraz though.
  20. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 13, 2012 -> 12:50 PM) You actually wrote it almost always happens. Then contradict yourself again. A lot of pitchers have arm injuries. The good thing recovery is more likely now than it was even 10 years ago.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 12, 2012 -> 06:10 PM) Alcatraz got the axe, "Touch" was renewed for a 2nd season. Was Touch any good? I gave up on Alcatraz. The finale of fringe was excellent.
  22. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ May 10, 2012 -> 07:10 PM) Thats not an excuse for Thibs though. Asik was dead tired and a bad ft shooter, he should have been pulled from the game at 2 minutes left. He does this stuff all the time with players and how he handles them, Rose just makes up for it with brilliance. Asik was a f***ing beast defensively in that 4th quarter and he hit what should have been the dunk that sealed the game. The Bulls played bad. Watson and Lucas were god awful and on a team that has no one that can create when your pg play is as bad as theirs was for an entire series, I don't even know how they were in the games they were in (oh ya, because they play ridiculous defense...why...because our players bought into our coaches system). Look, the Bulls lost and I'm sure Thibbs would like to take things back, but how about we hold the players accountable and also realize the true limitations of this squad).
  23. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ May 10, 2012 -> 07:04 PM) Thats not the point Im making. The Bulls should have won this series without Rose and Noah. They were up 15 in a game, they were up 11 game in a game and lost both. They were up tonight and lost again. Sure they didnt have Rose or Noah, but this was a 1 v 8. When the Bulls play the Heat, they wont have the advantage of dramatically more talent. Mistakes like these will crush. Its just a bad harbinger, because they could have won this series. Or on the flipside they were down in most of the games by the same magnitude. Things can be said both ways and Thibbs was going up against a very good coach. Both did some good things despite having limited talent on the teams. The Bulls lost because of what I believe to be a tick tack foul at the end of the game and stupid stupid play by CJ Watson. I don't know why the Bulls went for the rebound but I don't think Thibbs called for that.
