  1. Phil Rogers is commenting that the deal allows the Sox to potentially explore a Konerko trade, which would than free up payroll to make a FA splash. An unnamed scout is indicating that the Sox are likely going to get cash.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 02:11 PM) No, but they can send you notification of the change in your terms and unless you respond by X day it'll change and you'll be stuck. No different than what banks and credit cards do, and there's a high likelyhood that you'll either never see the notification (stuck in like an ad with your bill) or you'll just toss it out of habit. As far as the phone debate, this is like the argument of Zune vs the Ipod. No matter what features the Zune tries to throw at you, in the end it's just a waste because of the foundation the Ipod has laid. The App Store is a good example of that. Iphone will reign supreme just like it continues to reign supreme in mp3 players. That's coming from a guy that hates nearly everything Apple too. However, Google's power is > Apple's and the programming on the Google side is supposed to be legit. I think thats the big difference in these new android based phones and I think it is why we'll see them put a dent in Apple. I also think the Blackberry does a pretty f***ing good job too.

QUOTE (zenryan @ Nov 4, 2009 -> 11:05 PM) I'm about to opt out of my verizon contract. There's a report that on Nov. 15th Verizon will be making contract cancellations $350 instead of $175. They can't retroactively change the cancellation policy terms on your existing contract.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 11:11 AM) Stop with the fictitious posts. No one is hiring anywhere. If anyone wants an accounting gig, I've gotten like 5 peeps hired at my place the past few months. Just have to move to Cali, haha.
  5. QUOTE (Tex @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 08:36 AM) I always called these middle class baby insurance. You pay in by attending everyone's, then collect when you have a wedding, baby, etc. Usually it's their closest friends that want to throw the shower(s). But yeah, if they are doing it, it's greedy. If it is their friends, then decide how close of a friend you are. The reality is if you don't really like the person or they aren't that great of a friend, there is nothing wrong without going. To be honest I've been super narrow on the invites to keep our guest count down. We are still expecting about 200 cause the family is massive, but there is nothing wrong with saying no or declining. And the showers are usually seperate from the wedding and I think if you do both, you should factor it in and basically spend what you would have on one gift and either just give the gift at the shower or just give them two smaller gifts. Me, I'd be fine going to city hall and getting married. The wifey and her family, not so much, haha.
  6. QUOTE (Soxy @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 08:30 AM) So, I've got a ton of weddings coming up. People who are in their upper twenties and lived on their own for the past 5-7 years. Or lived with their future spouse. And I know this will sound petty, but do people in that age range really need engagement parties, showers AND then gifts at the wedding? Seriously? How many sets of dishes do you need? How many linen table cloths? How many board games and vacuum bags? I understand the whole wedding shower thing from when people were moving straight from their parents into their own household, but now? When I have friends that buy a house, have a house warming party, then get engaged, have an engagement party, a shower, and then a wedding. Come on. That's just f***ing greedy. However, I don't mind baby showers. Sorry, rant over. Given that I'm going through this process now and obviously depending on the couple, I kind of understand it. Weddings cost a lot and if you are self financing it so I really don't think the greed is an aspect. I know for me, now that I am seeing what a wedding costs, etc, I am much more giving for the weddings I do go to. Of course I would feel differently if these are people whose families are paying for the whole thing. And since I'm marrying an Asian girl we'll be getting lots of cash which is key cause it will help off-set our costs since we are self-funding the whole damn thing for the most part. Oh and I personally can vouch that any gift I get, if I'm not using it regularly, its getting returned and I'm not about to register for a zillion dishes and s*** that I'll never use.
  7. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 4, 2009 -> 04:53 PM) I said a masters in FINANCE, which will often involve working in accounting, but still give you flexibility. Not a masters IN accounting, which I agree is too narrow. No I was just adding my two cents on a masters in accounting in case anyone for whatever reason was thinking of getting it. I still think a Masters in Finance is a bad play compared to just going for the MBA, but I'm sure there are plenty of situations where the Masters in Finance works too. Just depends on the person and the need. I just think the MBA is much broader and better suited long-term, but its also very important to get it from a Tier 1 school or at least a higher Tier 2 school (especially in this economy). Otherwise the benefits of the MBA are minimal.
  8. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 01:34 PM) This has to be a done deal. No way KW would let two kids stew in their own juices for this long without there being something to it. I don't believe that the deal in its current state could be done. I just don't believe it.
  9. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 01:33 PM) Is it true that the Mark Gonzalez interview had something about the vets being pissed at Getz for talking about the energy of the younger guys? I don't see that as a problematic statement, but... given that we heard that Dye and Konerko got pissed at Swish and O-Cab for being vocal, there might be something to that, but still i hate conspiracy theories and Dye is as good as gone anyway. Yep. In this instance though I was really hoping the Sox realized that the vets were in the wrong and that this team needed more guys like Getz. Ozzie certainly liked Getz and I definitely did too. He was the type of guy you need. And by no means am I saying Getz is a star, just that I liked his intangibles and the tools and thought he had the ability to be a .300 hitter with a .360 or so OBP, solid D, and 30+ steals and some good base-running.
  10. Please don't let Northwestern ruin my Hawkeyes perfect season. Come on Iowa, lets play some great football this weekend so we can at least show up at Columbus undefeated.
  11. I believe Illini TE recruit Fiedorwitz or however the F its spelled will be making his visit to Iowa this weekend. A good game by Moeakai and the Hawkeyes should sell him on ditching the Illini for Iowa.
  12. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 01:29 PM) Why don't we just get Pujols and Utley? I'm down.
  13. He's great in the clubhouse too, which is huge. I think the Mark Gonzalez interview told everyone a whole lot about what the Sox clubhouse is like. I realize clubhouse gets over-rated at times as does chemistry, but it does make some what of a difference, depending on the type of team you have.
  14. QUOTE (tommy @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 01:26 PM) Why not pursue Figgins and have him play 2B and leadoff. Figgins 2B Beckham 3b Quentin LF Konerko _______ DH - signing/trade Pierzynski C Rios CF Teahen RF Ramirez SS Improve bullpen. Figgins is one of the best defensive 3B, so if we sign him, he'd have to play 3B with Beckham moving to 2B. Ramirez doesn't move from short unless its to another team (because he's the best in-house option by a long-shot defensively). Figgins is going to cost a lot and get a long-term deal for a guy that is aging and relies heavily on his legs though. I love Figgins, but I'm not sure I'm super down with the long-term idea of him in Chicago at his price.
  15. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 11:22 AM) If the Sox traded Konerko for this, Id be a lot more upset than Getz. I'd be okay with that. The money could go to a lot of other things.
  16. I still think something is up. I just can't put 2 and 2 together which makes me think either no trade, or there are other pieces to this puzzle and all of the info on this trade is not yet out.
  17. QUOTE (knightni @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 10:37 AM) [/b] Yes. Who steals a base? Who leads off? Beckham would lead-off in that instance.
  18. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 10:13 AM) Its true the Sox liked Getz, but management can turn on its favorite employees in a second. There has to be some motivation behind this trade, and it simply cant be: Teahan is the best 4mil player available. Which makes me believe that the trade had more to do with the players we sent, then the player we received. Teahan seems to be a player we are taking a chance with. He has had good stats at UCF, and maybe they believe he can finally reach the potential people thought he had. It would seem that Getz would have more value, but I just dont see KW as the type of GM that doesnt explore every option before making a deal. My guess is he called every team with this package and only KC had any real interest. Thats all merely speculation. So if thats the case, do the Sox threaten to non-tender Teahen and use the 4M elsewhere? Or get Teahen to agree to a contract at less than he was paid this year, knowing damn well that if he doesn't accept the offer, that the Sox will non-tender him and he'll be a UFA.
  19. QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 10:08 AM) Then do you agree with this? My immediate thought upon looking at Teahen's salary was, "how much would it suck if Beltre or Hudson end up signing for about $6M?" Ya, I think I just commented how 4M could pretty much get you one of Hudson/Polanco (maybe add 1-3M). 2B don't make a done unless your Chase Utley.
  20. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 10:07 AM) Its also possible the Sox didnt want Getz on the team and this was the best offer they could find... I just can't see that being the case. Why would the brass have raved about him all season (maybe not rave, but they talked him up pretty good) only to get rid of him because of what Mark Gonzalez said. Sounds to me like Getz is the solution and some of the lame ass veterans were the problem.
  21. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 10:01 AM) He's a terrible 3b and about an average corner of. I'd say his arm would give him a shot to be fine in LF. In right he's not that good, better than Dye, but that doesn't say a whole hell of a lot.
  22. QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 10:03 AM) Damn it Chisoxfn, I was saying these exact same things pages back! You should have been here then so I wouldn't have had to type so much. Well there is a reason we agree most of the time!!!
  23. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 10:00 AM) The overreactions in here are hilarious. 100 losses? Kotsay to DH full time? Seriously? And I am thinking more and more that Plan A is for Teahen to play 2B, with the Sox acquiring an OF. side note: If Getz still hasn't been told about the trade, after the story came out, that's pretty s***ty treatment. Not real happy with that. The trade doesn't smell right. You don't trade Getz for Teahen to be your starting 2B. Not when Teahen will make 4M more. At that point, why not sign Polanco or Hudson cause 4M would probably get your pretty damn close to signing one of those guys (give or take 1-3M).
  24. QUOTE (iamshack @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 10:00 AM) Is that really true? Can someone show us some defensive metrics? I seem to remember Teahan being a solid 3b...my guess is the numbers say he isn't, which is why you have the opinion that you do. Could he really be any worse at 3rd than Gordon? Gordon will be a very good 3B, book it. He's got great hands, a strong enough arm, and very quick reflexes. The big thing he lacked was the lateral movements of an above avg shortstop, but as a 3B he has the ability to be a gold glover in time, imo.
  25. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 09:59 AM) That would be bad, real bad. At least we have pitching, haha. Err...starting pitching
