This sounds pretty promising (per the tribune):

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 20, 2009 -> 09:42 AM) Last night, Fields was awful in the field. There were 4 potential plays to be made. An average fielder makes at least one, probably two. A great fielder makes 2 probably 3. Brooks Robinson in his prime makes all 4. Fields made none. He really has slow reactions on groundballs. He cannot hit second. That is giving the opponent an advantage. BTW, what's the deal with Pods new 16" softball style of running up and hitting the ball? I could maybe understand it if he was hitting grounders giving him a running start to first base, but everytime he performs this, he hits the ball in the air, something he shouldn't be doing too much of. Everyone talks about Fields playing solid defense, but if you watch the games closely you'll see that his 3B positioning is awful and that in fact he's flat out mediocre. I don't know if anyone has any defensive metrics (as I am not good at those) which would back what my eyes are telling me but I haven't been impressed at all. I'll also admit I was very spoiled. I think a short stint in AAA is what the doctor ordered and during that time you go with a combo of Nix/Betemeit. They couldn't hit anyworse and your saving Fields in a sense. But I think Fields gets a little bit longer before the Sox go that route and I don't have a problem with that. At this point his trade value is pretty low to the point that all you can do is trade him for another failed prospect (something I'm not opposed to).

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 20, 2009 -> 09:38 AM) If the White Sox would sent Jose Contreras to Charlotte, they would have no problem putting Gavin Floyd in the bullpen if his performance continues to blow. Remember though, Contreras was the guy that lead the charge to Charlotte, but I also agree with you, if the Sox don't think Gavin has it right, they'll move him to the pen and try straigthening him up there. Bottom line though they are invested in him and will do whatever it takes to get him back on track.

QUOTE (CJ_supporter @ May 20, 2009 -> 09:18 AM) Might be an understatement, since we are family. Thanks for the welcome. Awesome, you couldn't have come to a better spot cause I know we have a ton of CJ followers and supporters on here.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 20, 2009 -> 09:18 AM) Retherford? Reterford is a tweener but I fully believe he's got a shot to be a damn good utility player in this league. And who knows, maybe he'll hit enough to start somewhere. Gilmore though, has the ability to be an all star 3rd baseman. Still incredibly raw though and maybe only has a 5-10% chance of panning out, but still, I can't deny his potential.

QUOTE (MurcieOne @ May 19, 2009 -> 08:57 PM) Thought this was interesting... maybe a full-time replacement for Hunter/Roach? Tribune.com Awesome, I didn't think we'd get him but he'd be an excellent addition and would instantly become the best 3rd LB the Bears have had in a long time.
-
QUOTE (MurcieOne @ May 19, 2009 -> 08:49 PM) Blake G. to LAC... does that mean Kirk to LAC and Camby or Kaman to CHI? ooo i sure hope so. I'd try to get rid of Deng. If the Bulls can find a way to get rid of Deng/Hinrich for an expiring contract or something, they would potentially have the ability to sign two guys to max deals without losing Tyrus/Noah. Wouldn't be the worse thing in the world. Oh and they would also be able to still keep Salmons as long as they'd be willing to go into luxury tax.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 19, 2009 -> 08:41 PM) Beasley has a much, much, much better support system. At least for now. Girffin has a much much much better work ethic. OH and I don't buy those knocking Beasley, the guy will be an all star in this league.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 19, 2009 -> 08:25 PM) I see you're giving me the hard sell here. Somehow I'm just less than convinced. Where's the Candyman thread? The Clippers have Al Thornton whose a nice piece and Eric Gordon. The key for them is dumping Baron, although he'll probably get convinced to stick around and they'll be decent with him, but the Clippers got a nice looking front-court and should be able to move one of there guys for solid value. Find a true point and another guard and they have a nice looking front five.

QUOTE (knightni @ May 19, 2009 -> 08:03 PM) I said he was a less mobile Beasley. I never said that he wasn't a good player. They dont' even compare. Griffin is a very strong athletic player down low with a really good arsenal of low post moves. Beasley was much more of a wing player. Now Griffin isn't that tall and people make a big deal about that, but he's a very good athlete, has a strong build, good quickness, and will be an elite PF in this league. Oh and if the Bulls are interested, one of Camby/Randolph/Kaman is now available.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 19, 2009 -> 08:06 PM) Anaheim is not a #8 seed either. A lot of this is match ups, and we do not match up with Detroit. We can't out physical them, and we can't out speed them. Anaheim got a lot better when they gave Hiller the nod. -

QUOTE (rangercal @ May 19, 2009 -> 08:00 PM) I don't buy it. Anaheim was so close to knocking off mighty Detroit. Anaheim was the perfect matchup for Detroit and in general is a team that is built very well for the playoffs. They are a big physical hockey team that can really give Detroit problems. Chicago on the other hand is a skilled team going up against the most skilled team in the league. -
Oh and I assume your a big Retheford fan?

Welcome aboard. I'll get this thing pinned right now. Hopefully Danks can make some adjustments, but either way, I think it should be expected that Danks would have his struggles. He's such a phenomenal athlete though and a smart kid so he'll get things figured out and will definately spend all of 2009 in Birmingham.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ May 20, 2009 -> 06:10 AM) Escobar just turned 20 in January. I'm fine with him playing the year out in Kanny. If he needs to repeat it next year for the year or just part of it so be it. But i'd say let him adjust there rather than go down to Rookie ball where he excelled already last year. Escobar is in a similar spot to Gilmore. Let him play, he's still young and in Escobar's case he's got a very very nice defensive skill-set, the big question, is whether he'll be able to hit. If he can't, you might be talking about the next Pedro Lopez and thats not a knock, one of the sickest minor league combo's I've ever seen defensively involved Lopez.

QUOTE (BearSox @ May 19, 2009 -> 08:07 PM) IIRC, he was drafted last year out of Florida St (In like the 13 round or something like that). I think he was their saturday starter. He was really solid for them, but nothing spectacular. If I had to guess, I'd say he probably profiles to another no. 4 or 5 pitcher at best. Wasn't Sauer an ASU go or am I confusing him for someone else? I swear I've seen him pitch a couple times against the Titans.
-
QUOTE (scenario @ May 19, 2009 -> 07:07 PM) Nice outing for Stephen Sauer in Kanny's 5-1 win. 6 innings; 1 run (unearned) on 4 hits; 9 K's and 0 BB's. And Jon Gilmore went 3-4 at the plate. Interesting to look at Sauer's strikeouts and walks... on the season... 35 K's and 1 BB in 25 innings pitched. I always liked him at ASU.
-
QUOTE (flavum @ May 19, 2009 -> 07:01 PM) Jon Gilmore 9-15 his last four games. Up to .211. Good considering where he was. No one in the org would tell you that Gilmore is seasoned, but he's got tons of raw power and the Sox love him. And I mean love him. Glad to see him getting a role cause he's got some massive power potential and is the Sox best third base prospect (note that I'm saying that strictly because I don't consider Viciedo a 3rd base prospect, rather a LF or 1B prospect). And than of course Josh Fields isn't a prospect anymore.
-
Rice has been a pitching farm-house and your right, off the top of my head I can't think of a ton of positional players going early in the draft out of Rice. That said, he's done a good job handling Rice's pitching staff. The question is how involved Seastrunk is in calling pitches and stuff since at the collegiate level, 98% of the time the calls come from the dugout.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 19, 2009 -> 08:03 PM) I thought the new catch in the draft was if you couldn't sign a guy, you got the same pick in the next draft? Nope you move down one slot. The newer thing was that it expanded to the first three rounds, I believe. I just know the Nats are picking 10th this year for not signing Aaron Crow and had the 9th pick last year.

QUOTE (Molto @ May 19, 2009 -> 06:47 PM) Reading can be fun. I never said Poreda reminding me of Liriano and Wood. caufield was asking me about guys I've seen pitch who I wasn't fond of mechanically. Liriano and Wood were two guys, not two guys who remind me of Poreda. And I will also agree that Mario has made those comments and is very consistent about things. Mario, its good having you hear, you might be one of the few that can keep my dumbass blow thing up comments in check too, haha.

Ozzie wants to keep his coaching staff together
Chisoxfn replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Ozzie shouldn't be fired. I'm frustrated with whats going on as a fan but as I calm down here, I also realize that he can't exactly snap when the team isn't performing due to putting out a lot of guys that just flat out aren't major leaguers or aren't quite ready to produce. He's still the right man for the job. -
Now put on a winning streak and lets be able to close my thread. This team still has a shot, but its got to put together a nice little winning streak and get the mojo back. The big keys will be Danks, Floyd and Richard's outings, imo.
