  1. QUOTE (G&T @ May 11, 2009 -> 01:41 PM) Today, not long before I posted that. What was the context of it? Or is he just making that assumption since the Sox didn't call him up and instead opted for Richard to make the start this week?
  2. When did Boers talk about this? It doesn't shock me though, he looked like piss when I saw him pitch.
  3. Enough of this s***...I'm calling for the Sweep of the Tribe.
  4. Sanchez would be a very nice pick and I agree with you beautox, if he's anything like Russel Martin we've gotten ourselvse a hell of a pick. Sanchez seems like the type of bat that could be a very good middle of the order hitter. I don't see him hitting for 40 HR power, but you could be talking about a .300, .360+, 20-30 HR type of line and that would be pretty damn awesome coming from the catcher spot.
  5. Happy bday Mr. Ian. Hope its a good one!!!
  6. QUOTE (Felix @ May 11, 2009 -> 11:09 AM) His fastball reached 99 yesterday and his stuff looked pretty impressive. I didn't get to see too much of his start, but I saw bits and pieces and he looked pretty good. Still, he looked like he had a hell of a fastball. I take it you were at the game? You interning there?
  7. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 11, 2009 -> 10:45 AM) Hopefully Santos Rodriguez can be the next Boone Logan, but with better mental faculties is "man up" than Logan or Marte. The Sox scouts really like him. He's got good stuff and is very very young. We'll see if the org can help him and Gilmore develop.
  8. QUOTE (Cali @ May 11, 2009 -> 10:57 AM) I was actually trying to be a smart-ass with asking for a link, way to ruin the joke... I'm working, so I can't make it for the May games, but I'm there for the September series for sure since it's on the weekend for once. Oh and I wanted to be a smartass back, but I'm too nice, afterall, OC is such a nicer place than LA, haha.
  9. If Scheppers has some up and down appearances, he could find is way on the boards when the Sox pick. I say look past that injury and look at the raw upside. He's showing good velocity though so I'm sure he'll go well before the Sox pick, probably in the top 10 along with Crow.
  10. QUOTE (Cali @ May 11, 2009 -> 10:38 AM) Link? http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?showforum=18 I'm pretty sure you've made a few appearances there, after all, you were one of the big guys tracking Bmac!!! You making it to the OC for any of these upcoming games?
  11. http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/draft/?p=809 Thats a good article talking a bit about the left handed pitching in this draft. My boy Brothers makes another apperance and a guy that BearSox likes Paxton makes an appearance as well. Paxton has a big time arm, same with Brothers, but Brothers seems to have flipped a switch and is progressing towards big big things. Highly highly doubt he's there when the Sox pick but if he is, I drool at the idea of getting him into our rotation. Also, here's a pretty cool quote (BA) that tells me the Sox are in a great spot having those extra picks, since this is a draft with lots of solid prospects but no great ones (therefor, its really great having a lot of picks in the early rounds since all of the guys grade out similarly). Lots of quality college depth in the draft as well.
  12. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 11, 2009 -> 10:26 AM) Like it or not, they would not go that far over slot money. If he fell that far, he'd be falling farther still. And frankly, I'm not sure I ever like investing that much in a pitcher, no matter who he is, until I know his arm can handle the workload. How many top talent pitchers drop down because of arm trouble when they try to get moved up to the full-MLB-season level? 33%? 50%? Balta, that is my biggest concern. I have a lot of trouble investing big bucks in any sort of pitcher just because of the injury concerns. It's also why I feel it is so important to have tons of pitching prospects in your organization at all times, because if you can than develop those arms, you'll be king. Pitching is always king. You'll be able to trade your talent that develops and nears FA and than slowly bring in new arms, keeping your rotation strong yet cost effective and that allows you to spend more money on the bigger name position players, who tend to be much better FA buys since hitters typically can stay healthy for a much longer time and actually live up to the big money contracts. In addition, I should point out that when you are allowed to trade draft picks, that it also means you must than have a draft cap or something along those lines similar to what the NBA or NFL uses. This would prevent teams like the BoSox from buying picks and than still taking guys that fell late and offering them huge bonuses. Plus it would just keep things fairer for the small market teams.
  13. Check out the FutureSox forum. We are profiling up tons of prospects in there and encourage some of you who might not venture into the FutureSox forum to come by and check it out. It is easily home to the most informed minor league discussion on the White Sox on the web and some very good draft discussion as well.
  14. Hypothetical question. If the Sox had the shot to draft Strausberg, do you feel the organization would take him? I know a lot of people are giving the Nationals flack for maybe not taking the consensus #1 pick due to Boras demanding a $50M bonus, but would the White Sox take him and would you take him? The guy profiles to be a front of the rotation starter and could immediately jump into your rotation. Most scouts have already said that Strausberg would immediately be the Nationals #1 pitcher. While I don't know if he'll make the jump that easily, his stuff is just awe dropping and he seems to have a very nice delivery, but injuries can easily get in the way of a pitcher and I'll be honest, I'd feel more comfortable giving $50M guaranteed to an offensive prospect coming out of the draft than a pitching prospect because health plays a much larger role in a pitchers success. I also feel, in fact, pretty much guarantee, that the White Sox would not draft Strausburg and I don't think they would be the only organization that would pass on him. And this alone leads me to another point, MLB needs to allow the trading of draft picks or at least the trading of early round selections. The Nationals clearly don't have the financial ability to truly put all that money in Strausburg (they still might) but shouldn't they have the option to utilize there leverage and make a deal with the Yanks, Dodgers, Red Sox, etc and get another teams pick plus prospects? Lets make draft picks chips. Maybe throw in a limit to how many picks you can actually trade or something if baseball is overly concerned, but at least allow some mobility of picks because it will better allow the best players to go early in the draft and will also enable small market teams to have a bit more success because they can get something for moving down and taking the "signability" selection.
  15. Pollack is another college guy that grades out similarly that I prefer, but you'll see a lot of people debating whose the better player, Pollack or Wheeler.
  16. Fullerton back into BA's top 5 after winning 7 in a row prior to a loss on Sunday. That included 2 of 3 @ Cal Poly this weekend. That would have been #12 Cal Poly. UCI still holds the #1 spot for an umteenth consecutive week. f*** yes Big WEST!!!. UCLA has 4 more left, including 3 games against UCLA.
  17. My buddies were at the game and said he was ridiculous.
  18. QUOTE (shipps @ May 9, 2009 -> 12:13 PM) So apparently I was sleep walking last night and put ice cream sandwiches down my pants. Whaaa?
  19. QUOTE (fathom @ May 10, 2009 -> 10:36 AM) Trying to show the fans a return on the Javy trade. Thats Gilmore and Flowers.
  20. QUOTE (moragasoxfan @ May 9, 2009 -> 10:00 PM) Aaron said that his back was stiff the whole game. He was told that he would just have to "sack up" and keep pitching. It probably explains why he was up in the zone so much. He was struggling with command of his FB the whole game, but he kept getting out of trouble. He thought he could do it one more time in the 7th. Glad to see he was able to battle through and that 7th should be a good learning experience for him. Also, thanks for the info!
  21. I've seen some reports that are quite down on Wheeler and say that fundementally he's just a wreck, but he's supposed to have a good bit of ability. Although there are already a couple prospects listed on this forum that I like more than Wheeler. That said, you get him with anything other than your first rounder and I'd be happy.
  22. Please don't compare Shelby and Cook.
  23. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 8, 2009 -> 04:01 PM) Looking at his stats in the minors, I see what Caulfield is saying...his numbers don't stand out at any level until 2007-2008 when he started repeating AAA. He didn't seem particularly young for any level, didn't skip any, etc. So what exactly was it that sold people on him? Give you an example: In 2004 he hit .213 in his first stint at AA and he was still ranked the next year as the Rockies #9 prospect. He had a good year in High A ball in 2003, had an .826 OPS, but it seems like a lot of people can do that and don't get ranked in BA's top 100. What was it that kept him moving upwards? Someone has to have liked something about Nix. The raw tools.
  24. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 8, 2009 -> 03:56 PM) .261 .332 .415 747 OPS Those are his CAREER minor league averages over 8 seasons. Throw in 10-15 stolen bases, that's a bottom 3rd major league CFer in terms of numbers. Now if Brian Anderson could hit .260 with a 330 OBP, that would be great, but Nix has no experience in CF, and just because he made a "good" play in RF doesn't mean he has the ability to just start playing CF with the White Sox. If they're really sold on Getz/Beckham/Ramirez up the middle, then fine, but it's just as logical to think that Josh Fields might need a replacement. Of course, Nix at 3B is going to be below average offensively, and he won't give you the stolen base totals that Figgins does, nor will he give you a high OBP. I didn't say thats what I would do, but I would definately be trying to get him at bats. I think they should see if he can play SS and than move Ramirez to CF. However, the Sox think Ramirez can be a special defensive shortstop and if thats the case than its Nix that would have to move. And Nix offensive upside might be a whole lot better than Anderson. I'm also not at all saying that he'd be as good defensively as Anderson, but he might be solid. He'd of course have to hit very well to stay, but right now, with the what teh Sox are currently running out in CF, I would consider it.
