QUOTE (fathom @ May 6, 2009 -> 10:51 AM) Yes, more about command. I know their stuff isn't similiar at all. It just seems like Poreda would have a hell of a time completing 5 innings at the big league level right now. It will be interesting to see if he can cut down on the wildness the rest of his minor league season. I'd put him more on par with a poor man's Scott Kazmir.

QUOTE (fathom @ May 6, 2009 -> 10:33 AM) How similar are Poreda's K/BB ratio to those of Cotts when he was in AA? Are they even close? Cotts was filthy down in AA. Plus I don't know how you can really compare the two guys considering they have completely different stuff. Cotts never had the dominanting fastball, but the hitch in his delivery (when healthy) made him very tough to catch up to. However, I remember Cotts struggled with his command and thus struggled during his initial call-up with the Sox. So maybe you are talking about how Poreda also struggles with command. Regardless I don't look too into the numbers in that sense, I look more at the fact that Poreda has a lot to learn, although I've heard his breaking pitch is getting better and better and I also know the Sox are trying to have him throw less of his best pitch (FB) so that he can further develop and hone his other stuff.

Sad story about Former Sox 3B Greg Norton
Chisoxfn replied to WhiteSoxfan1986's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Wow, I never knew that. Awful, simply awful. Norton might not have been as good of a ball player as I thought he might end up being, but I always have cheered for him and one of the things etched in my mind from watching baseball as a kid were the Nawton...Your the Greatest calls. So with that in mind...Nawton, your the greatest -
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 6, 2009 -> 10:22 AM) One of the top 3 pitchers in college doesn't make you one of the top 3 or 10 or 100 pitching prospects for the pros. There have been Heisman trophy winners that don't get drafted. It was a bad pick and it was supposed to be a "safe" pick. He didn't have a big upside. It was safe because it was assumed he would most likely and fairly quickly become a mediocre 4th or 5th starter. I think there are still quite a few people that believe he'll make it as a 4th or 5th starter in the majors. I just don't think they believe it will be with the Sox and I don't know if it will be this year. But if he sticks around he'll hone his command and have some serviceable (note that I say serviceable) major league years and will make himself at least a few million bucks playing this game (aside from the moeny he's already gotten).

Lillibridge the leader to go back to Charlotte
Chisoxfn replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I could see Lilli maybe fitting in on an NL squad as a last bench player, but in the AL, no way. In terms of Betemeit, I like him as a hitter but he's so freaking bad in the field from what I've seen that I'm hard pressed to use him in anything other than a DH role. And right now Thome is the guy and I'm not so certain that I'd want Betemeit as a full time DH anyway. He's not that good of a hitter. -
QUOTE (lostfan @ May 6, 2009 -> 10:18 AM) There is nothing more unfair than playing the "they drafted player A when player B could've been had." The Bears drafted Curtis Enis instead of Randy Moss. They drafted Cade McNown instead of Champ Bailey. Unless you know the team was targeting that guy or that you or the many people involved had a lot better guys higher on your board. For example, I will always b**** about the Sox drafting of Lucy when they did because I had seen Suzuki play for a long long time at Fullerton and knew he was the guy I wanted. I wanted him badly. Now the jury is obviously still out on him, but no one in baseball would say Lucy is a better prospect than Suzuki. I will say that Lucy still has the potential to be a big league catcher, but probably not for this organization as it seems to not at all appreciate the defensive aspect of the game. Lucy is pretty darn good defensively, so was Stewart and neither have really ever gotten a fair shot with the Sox (Stewart got moved and eventually found his way back here again).

QUOTE (greg775 @ May 6, 2009 -> 09:57 AM) All I can say is I disagree. The Broadway I was watching had me not believing what I was seeing. It looked like soft slop, so unusually bad I thought I'd start its own thread. If Broadway is going to remind us of anyone, he's much more reminiscent of the typical Twins pitcher (or Non Santana/Liriano Twins pitcher). I'd say his upside would be simialr to that of Radke but there are plenty of guys with the ability to cut, move and change speeds like Radke (or even a Buehrle) but very few have the command that those guys have. I still say Broadway will have an extended career in the big's, but it probably won't be with the Sox.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 6, 2009 -> 08:46 AM) Yeah, maybe they can bring up Wes Whisler to take his place? Do you realize that what comes after Contreras is going to be worse? Which is why I kept saying it was a massive failure for the Sox to do what they did. People kept saying we had depth and the smart ones knew that Marquez was crap (at least currently), that Richard doesn't have enough pitches to be a successful starter, Broadway doesn't have command, etc etc etc. Fact is the Sox were counting on Colon and Contreras and had absolutely no alternative readily available. In fact, I still think the Sox priority in the draft should be on pitching, pitching and more pitching because the fact of the matter is aside from guys in the lower levels (who have a lot left to prove) there are very few even potential high impact arms in the system. Poreda is the only one at a high enough level and I consistently will tell you that he isn't ready to be a high impact starter with his current arsenal, although if his sinker is truly plus plus, that could change.

Sox scouts on the lookout for young OF prospects

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 6, 2009 -> 08:42 AM) Yet the Sox love Lillibridge and what's his only tool? The Sox have had a year or two with a lot of selections in the first 50, and really screwed up. I think Pedroia was available when Whisler and Lucy were drafted. Maybe another problem is the total inability to develop players at lower levels. Bucholtz, Kershaw a couple of pitchers still on the board when Broadway was taken. Maybe Boston is just a lot better in the lower levels of developing guys. Absolutely, the draft with Sweeney/Anderson was one of the biggest ones. Initially people thought the Sox made out like bandits, but Lumsden was dealt for MacDougall and fell on his face, BA turned into a bust (sorry but he is), and Sweeney took longer to develop and the Sox lost patience and sent him elsewhere. Gio was also dealt and well Whisler was an awful pick, although he's having a great year in the minors. So is McCulloch, shockingly enough. Heck, I think a lot of us complained about Kenny Jr. but speed is his biggest tool. I also think we'll see the Sox take a speedster very early in this draft. Lets just hope they get a Ellsbury and not a Lillibridge. And I have no freaking clue why the Sox love Lillibridge. The guy I love in limited AB's is Nix. The guy just looks like a ballplayer. -
QUOTE (flavum @ May 6, 2009 -> 06:23 AM) What's the story on Justin Edwards? He pitched for Kannapolis in 2007, but was in independent ball in 2008. Today for Kanny: 5 innings, 1 walk, 9 K's I can't remember but I thought he was hurt. He was a real good prep pitcher, IIRC. Doesn't have great stuff but was always thought of a guy that knew how to pitch and as such garnered comparisons to Buehrle when he was drafted. It was a while ago though, so I might be mistaking him for another lefty, but I'm pretty certain he was one of the top high school pitchers in his state.

Sox scouts on the lookout for young OF prospects

QUOTE (SoxAce @ May 6, 2009 -> 08:38 AM) ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Thank you Jason. Hell look at Broadway's college stats and even when he was in B-Ham. He was a stud. Kid has movement on his pitches, he just isn't as talented as once thought. But McCollugh... ugh, always HATED that pick. He is waaaaaay worse than Broadway. Hell McCollugh probably won't even make it past AA. (or at least "earn the right" to move past there) Kyle is actually pitching well, but his stuff is very "meh". -

Or even a guy like Ricky Brooks that was a top 5 round selection (4th, IIRC) that wasn't on most teams draft boards. -
Sox scouts on the lookout for young OF prospects
Chisoxfn replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
On an unrelated sidenote, a lot of people could say that the Red Sox went safe with Pedroai, figuring they'd get a solid ballplayer with that pick but no one thought his tools would project him into a star at the major league level. Turns out he's quite the ballplayer. Of course any of us could say that about a crapload of MLB players. -
Sox scouts on the lookout for young OF prospects
Chisoxfn replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
To be fair a lot of teams passed up on Ellsbury because people feared that his only true tool was his speed. Turns out he is a tremendous leadoff hitter, but the Sox were far from the only team to pass on Ellsbury. Broadway was projected by most to get drafted in the range that the Sox took him. He really had pitched phenomanl down the stretch of his college career and looked like a safe bet to be a #3 pitcher. The problem is his command just isn't good enough and that spike curve hasn't been as dominant as it was in college. I tend to note that most pitchers with a spike curveball tend to fail in the big's and I'm not certain why but my guess is (and its purely a guess as I've never thrown a spike curve in my life) that it has to do with the bigger seams in college making it easier to throw it well at the college level. The pick that people should really gripe about is the Donny Lucy and Kyle McCulloch selections. Those were absolutely horrendous picks, along with the Wes Whisler selection. -
Well, I woke up with a sore throat this morning. Hopefully its not swine flu. I haven't had a cold in a long time.

I realize injuries happen, but when the guys that didn't make the roster or that forced the Sox to be in this spot are Brian Anderson, Jerry Owens, Mike MacDougal, than you know what, its the organizations own freaking fault. I can give passes for the lineup when Dye and Fields were hurt or even Getz cause you know what, they were quality guys to have but the other guys, no, not quality. Now I think BA is a major leaguer but he's the rare exception and I was encouraged by what he did in his limited play but I still think everyone sees that there is a massive hole in his swing that will prevent him from being an everyday big leaguer. Bottom line, this team had some serious holes before it broke camp and thats the GM's fault. Kenny's done a lot of great things, but some of the holes he left the Sox with weren't one of them this year. I can make a case that his hands were tied, but some of these holes have existed for years. Still, all that said, this team should still at least compete.

QUOTE (Brian @ May 5, 2009 -> 06:15 AM) I don't think she is the mother. Remember an earlier episode, they made it pretty clear it isn't her when the jump to the voiceover talking to two different kids in the future than the ones we are used to seeing. I think maybe a connection to the mother, but not her. Maybe hooks Ted up with someone.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 4, 2009 -> 05:43 AM) I agree. The reason its so nice to shave in the shower is the heat/steam opens your pores. I learned that from "Lost" like 3-4 seasons ago (in the hatch), and haven't looked back since. Do you all have mirrors in the shower or something? How the heck can you shave without looking in the mirror. I at least need the mirror when I'm trimming around my sideburns, which I keep very thin.

QUOTE (Jimbo's Drinker @ May 3, 2009 -> 11:26 PM) What is the best electric razor you have used/are using? They suck. I love my Gillette Mach 3. They got me good with that free razor they mailed me on my 18th birthday. Maybe electrics work for people that don't have real facial hair, but if you have it, they are terrible. Or at least I've never found one that works good.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Apr 29, 2009 -> 07:56 AM) Anyone else notice the evil stare Rose gave Gordon after Gordon's off balance jumper to end regulation? Basically a, "you know you were supposed to get me the ball, but you wanted to be the hero" look. Are you kidding me? Why the f*** should Derek Rose get the ball? Seriously, I'm sick of people that continue to complain about Gordon. I was Gordons biggest knocker throughout his career but come on. Derek Rose was awful yesterday and giving him the ball, puhleease. Maybe he'd have tripped over himself or gotten bailed out on a block call and than b****ed and cried to the refs like he did last night all game long. I'm not buying Rose as much as most on here are. I think he's got the potential to be great but a lot of people here have annoited him far sooner than he should get annoited. Yet its guys like Hinrich, Gordon, Noah, heck even Salmons (defensively Salmons has played good, offensively, you can tell he's hurting big time) that are as much a part of this series as Rose.

QUOTE (Mr. Showtime @ Apr 28, 2009 -> 08:27 PM) Watching the replay again; I'm kinda surprised Miller didn't step back and try to hit a 3 on the last shot. Not ideal by any means, but was an option. I don't think Miller realized he had enough time to go in for the dunk. I'm pretty sure he's almost never been in that sort of position in his career.

QUOTE (Mr. Showtime @ Apr 28, 2009 -> 08:19 PM) Yes they did. I was screaming at my tv to get Kirk back in the damn game. Yet he didn't come back in till it was down to 3 or so. Kirk and Ben Gordon have been the two MVP's in the back court this series. Rose had one game. Hinrich defense has been tremendous. Heck, I'll even give Salmons credit, he did a great job on Pierce, despite Pierce hitting the same exact shot three times in a row. There was nothing else Salmons could do on those.

QUOTE (Mr. Showtime @ Apr 28, 2009 -> 08:18 PM) I watch these games and I want to commit acts of violence so badly. I don't want to single out Rose in particular tonight, but just some dumbass plays on the court tonight. I don't know what they are going to do going forward to get some better players around Rose. I just didn't want to see him shooting at all at the end of this game unless it was a lay-up. Rose is the worse f***ing defender I've seen in a long time. At times he'll make a real good defensive play but as a whole he is so f***ing bad.
