The last part is interesting to me - why did they send him home? -
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Oct 9, 2009 -> 04:08 PM) Its their award, they can give it to whoever the hell they want. Why do people care? It doesnt change anything, its a damn award that is entirely meaningless. Its like arguing about the Oscars, Heisman, MVP or any other award voted by people. They set the criteria, they got to vote and in the end their vote matters and our opinion doesnt. No way should Obama give it back, he won fair and square. Yep. That's right. And that says it all.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 9, 2009 -> 09:58 AM) Here, no. MASSIVE OUTRAGE!!!! ARG! elsewhere, yes. I was only talking about here... I don't really read anywhere else.

QUOTE (Tex @ Oct 9, 2009 -> 09:57 AM) Hush, it's more fun when the REPs don't know that. REP's aren't the ones bringing it up. Strawman.

QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Oct 8, 2009 -> 09:08 PM) What a weird notion for anyone to contemplate. What would Jesus be sentenced for today that would warrant capital punishment according to US laws? Maybe he'd be locked up under the belief he's a raving lunatic with delusions of divinity, but I don't thing that would get him the chair. I get the point — that the alleged instrument of execution for Jesus has become the principal symbol of Christianity. It just seems like a lazy and not particularly nuanced observation. I don't think it was an observation about what laws were being broken, as you mentioned at the end, it was just picking our worst way of passing the death penalty and the worst way of that time.
-
I heard it said recently that if Jesus were killed today, he'd be killed in an electric chair. Just think, instead of those crosses hanging from everyone's neck, and the churches, and everything else, it could be electric chairs. It gives a whole new meaning to symbols, I guess.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 8, 2009 -> 07:46 PM) Also, continuing on the fickle consumers angle, the last couple months have seen a steady barrage of financial news in the media that are all singing a chorus of "recession abating". People read that, and start to cautiously come out of their shells. X factor is still how bad unemployment will get. If it keeps flirting around 10%, I think we're going to have a decent beginning of a recovery in 2010. if it goes well above that, certainly if well over 11%, then we may double-dip. the 10% number has a big psychological impact too of course, a sort of round number resistance type effect (though not quite the same). If it goes from 9.8% (now) to 10.0% on the next reading, that's not a huge increase, but it might scare people. Don't make the mistake of correlating a double dip based on unemployment percentages. Next year at this time, despite all of the extra benefits, there's going to be a ton of people that are cycled out of that 9.x, 10.x, and 11.x number.

Update on unemployment: This is on top of the 20 weeks that is above and beyond the regular 26 weeks.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 7, 2009 -> 04:32 PM) I'd be curious how much of the proceeds of this movie that Moore is donating to help people? How much of "Sicko" went to help people without insurance?

QUOTE (Brian @ Oct 7, 2009 -> 03:55 PM) Not sure what to think about it. I guess it is depressing. Crazy what some of the corporations do to make money. The whole fiasco last year with Congress voting on the bailout happened so fast and the part where they explain what happened was interesting. I'd recommend it to anyone who has an opinion on this stuff, whether you agree or don't with Moore. Executives have policies taken out on them all the time. And it's up to the individual to take care of themselves on life insurance. In fact, most of the time, they have private life insurance given to them as a part of their package (aka it goes to their families). There's nothing wrong with that because it's an investment in the company.

I've gotten some calls, but it's weird because when I went online to apply for more, it's gotten dead around here for the last week or so as far as new postings. I won't have internet for a few days, so hopefully when I get back there's a lot new.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 30, 2009 -> 10:50 PM) So basically it's a scandal that 2 Senate committees passed alternate versions of the 2 bills, the Dems can only bring 1 bill to the floor, so they're going to have to go through some shenanigans either way to bring about a single bill to vote on instead of letting the bill die because the 2 bills don't match. Basically, it's a scandal that the Senate votes on a health care bill. Why do I get the feeling that you have a problem with the Dems using a procedural technique to try to move towards a majority vote on a health care bill, but you'll have no problem with the Republicans using a procedural technique to prevent a majority vote on a health care bill? If you're talking about cloture (filibuster) then I have no issues with it because both parties have done it ad naseum for the last 20 years.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Sep 30, 2009 -> 10:25 PM) I read somewhere that in advanced stages of dementia/Alzheimer's people start turning into assholes and they're really hard to be around because it starts taking over that part of the brain. Or something like that. My grandmother's brother, who was the nicest man you'd ever meet, was violent - he often had to be restrained in a wheel chair toward the end. He got really, really nasty. My grandmother had no mind left - she had the mind of a 3 year old in an 85 year old body. It was a very sad thing to see... she was otherwise healthy which made it almost worse.

QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 30, 2009 -> 10:02 PM) I'll read that when the writer gets an understanding of what the hell he's talking about. I'll summarize for you. They are using procedural hocus pocus to attach the public option to another bill that's completely unrelated. Now you're informed. Or something. Snob. I know this is your field and all but it's sort of funny how you dismiss things summarily when it doesn't fit your view yet when it does, you're apt to not say stuff like you just posted. And I really am kidding about the snob comment. You write well - a lot better then most of these so called professionals.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Sep 30, 2009 -> 09:27 PM) So my wife's grandmother is gradually slipping into dementia and losing her mind. It's sad, but it's also kind of funny at the same time and I feel like a douche for having the urge to crack jokes. I noticed one day about a year ago I said hi to her and she had this confused look on her face like she was supposed to know who I was and couldn't figure it out. One of her daughters (Gloria) jokingly said "you've met him before don't you?" and she was like "I think I know him but..." and then we figured out she really couldn't remember so Gloria had to remind her that I was her granddaughter's husband. She remembered after that and she played it off. Since then though, she comes to my house and stuff and I tell her hello and stand near her like I'm about to give her a hug and she just stares at me blankly... I'm pretty sure she has no idea who I am anymore. That was kind of confirmed today when she asked Gloria (the daughter I was just talking about) about her son Trevis, asked how he was doing and suggested Gloria tell him to stop by. That would have been all well and good except Trevis died in 2005. She completely forgot that her grandson died 4 1/2 years ago. My grandmother died of Alzheimer's... she had severe dementia - she had not a clue who I was for about 10 years until she died. It's very sad.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Sep 30, 2009 -> 09:31 PM) Comprehensive health care reform is unpopular with the American people? I say damn, that first sentence didn't even come with a qualifier. Which is definitely poorly worded. Which was my whole damn argument earlier today.

I know this is the HuffPo of the right, but: http://www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=33740 They're still trying to ram this down our throat, according to this.

Well, the NFL is exclusive to DirecTv, so there's no getting around that. But everything else is another company.
-
I wish they'd get some of the pay-per-view sports, like MLB, Center Ice, etc. though.

Then close it. It's obvious there's nothing left to discuss.

2A challenge to state/local bans in play
kapkomet replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 30, 2009 -> 01:02 PM) thought this would happen. Also, was kind of annoyed that the SC is continuing to take such vague stands that open it up to case by case rulings. Surely they can come up with SOME standard to apply here. That's a bigger issue then just 2A cases, for sure. -
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 30, 2009 -> 01:11 PM) No, they don't, unless you're still in the "it'll bankrupt every private insurer" fantasy land. I am. Because it will. Oh wait, the government is going to subsidize everything - aka, we'll give you money if you do what we say. And that's still taking over private industry.
-
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 30, 2009 -> 01:02 PM) No, HB3200, as I recall it quoted in here and elsewhere, says that if you DO NOT HAVE private coverage, you either have to buy into the public plan, or pay a penalty. Correct? Ok. and what effect do you think that is going to have? I have to get the public option or I have to pay a penalty to pay for the public option anyway. Gees.
-
QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 30, 2009 -> 01:00 PM) the polls don't turn pretty dramatically, the public option is more popular than the president. Wow, really? (goose stepping)... The government needs to do everything for me. /official drone
