I'm in the camp of way too late. Our president has no balls. At all.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 17, 2011 -> 03:24 PM) The fact that they'd use the WHO estimates for one type but deliberately not use an available WHO estimate for another type of electricity makes me more than a little uncomfortable, even if I think they're right regarding the fossil (cough) fuels. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Mar 17, 2011 -> 03:24 PM) I'm far too lazy myself, but a graph like that should include error bars on the estimates for all deaths and compare to reasonable worst-case estimates from Chernobyl, not the lowest estimate available. I'd imagine it's very sensitive. Good call, because it seems like that graph has all sorts of cherry picking going on.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 16, 2011 -> 09:36 PM) I can't wait to hear this. Should be something about a conspiracy involving Obama, oil companies, and possibly France. And maybe Quebec. Maybe. Blame (French) Canada.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Mar 16, 2011 -> 09:33 PM) I'm in favor of stopping Gaddafi from slaughtering Libyans. Which means we all should have hoped a little harder 30 years ago when that bomb hit 50 feet beside him, because he's been killing his people for years, it just hasn't gotten any attention until there was an "uprising". This guy and Saddam will be good buddies in hell.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Mar 16, 2011 -> 09:29 PM) There was no interest in taking Moubarak out with military force. Right, I agree. But why the difference (well, "difference") of what's happening between the two countries? Edit. Just saw your second post - wouldn't it make the argument that Gaddafi should be pushed harder from power then what we've pushed for, as opposed to Egypt?

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Mar 16, 2011 -> 03:23 PM) eta also there's not a containment building around spent fuel for a variety of reasons. Maybe that needs to be reevaluated along with other design-basis assumptions, but the doom-and-gloom spewing from some of the anti-nuke people right now is pretty ridiculous. I know you disagree, but I see nuclear power as the only feasible short-to-mid-term alternative to more coal and natural gas. The risks of ever-increasing AGW far outweigh the risks of nuclear power. Even in the face of the worst potential natural disaster that could hit an older plant of the most susceptible design, it's still not that bad right now. This could turn much worse in a hurry, of course, and I'm not diminishing the environmental impact of what's occurring in Japan right now. What do you know, we actually agree on something. All sarcasm aside, the so called experts on this whole thing have been people who have extreme anti nuclear agendas.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Mar 16, 2011 -> 09:24 PM) I have no doubt that we could take care of Gaddafi in a night. We won't, and the no-fly zone won't mean s*** in a couple of days. The rebels needed support last week or the week before, not hemming and hawing at the UN. There was no interest in taking out Gaddafi but a s*** load of interest in taking out Moubarak. I wonder why...

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Mar 16, 2011 -> 02:26 PM) Rand Paul: This is complete bulls***. Complete. There are many people who disagree(d) with the fiscal policy of the president between 2000 and 2008 (and in particular 2007-2008). But this is like suggesting gas doesn't light a fire when you compare it to what Barackus the Great has done.

QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Mar 13, 2011 -> 11:14 PM) Spring Break. South Padre Island. My last 8 days were epic. Yea, but did you...

QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Mar 14, 2011 -> 10:55 PM) Do businesses really check to see/have anyway of knowing how long a person actually worked at a company?? I applied at Prompt today to be a VST (clean the trucks) and i legit accidentally put that i started the job in 06 instead of 08, instead of crossing it out i left it knowing my boss there is a lifelong friend and would have my back. Is there anything they can check aside from calling my manager to see if i worked there that long?? Oh yes. They can and do check length of employment. If it's an honest mistake, call them back and tell them.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 28, 2011 -> 08:57 AM) As usual, I'm going to be the one who chimes in negatively on the current state of the economy. Worth noting; I'd never, ever have predicted the 2009-2010 stock price runup. To me, right now, I anticipate headwinds in a lot of sectors, in no small part because of the fact that things have run up so much. Banking has recovered some but not entirely from 2008...but there's a strong risk of another implosion since nothing was ever fixed there. Consumer goods or manufacturing...some inflation can help companies by giving advantages to companies with domestic production, but another oil shock would also threaten their sales. If I were looking for long-term growth, I'd either target sectors that I think might be able to show substantial growth in the next decade (Defense/aerospace, technology, pharmaceuticals, clean energy), or I'd simply go for short-term stability and let some of the overseas instability shake itself out while I sat contently holding US T-Bills. I can always move funds back into stocks from Treasuries at a later date. Why? I mean, that fed /ustreas money had to go somewhere.

Huckabee is becoming Sarah Palin's douchebag.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 8, 2011 -> 11:52 AM) Yeah, we do BWCA/Quetico pretty often, but usually prefer the Quetico (Canadian) side because its less used. Will do. By the way, we are rebuilding the site now, entirely new version will be out in a week or two. So the link is a bit stale. I've seen some of your pics... I would love to do this sometime but a.) I'd die and b.) I'd die.

I hope so, I really do. It's rather boring not having any good teams in Indiana...

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 4, 2011 -> 03:04 PM) How many of them does Crean have committed? 0. Right? Says it all, doesn't it? Indiana (University) basketball is dead.

QUOTE (YASNY @ Mar 6, 2011 -> 02:28 PM) Compare this deal to the deal Jenks got from Boston. I like this. Yea, I was just thinking this. I find it quite funny that he got exactly the same deal over the next two years. You don't think there's a message there, do you?

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 6, 2011 -> 08:13 AM) Of course, the first premise of your argument, that "there are worse tortures so how can you complain about this" is clearly faulty. The second is then undercut by the fact that he hasn't even been sentenced to anything or found guilty by any court. It's not even punishment...it's inflicting of humiliation and psychological torture to get him to confess and testify against other people in the case (assange). Obama should clearly be arrested for war crimes, if we follow your (il)logic.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 1, 2011 -> 11:12 AM) Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich will officially form an exploratory committee regarding running for the 2012 Republican Presidential Nomination. Whorebag.

Unless you get an amount that's for a fellowship grant or you had to work for the grant, it should (generally) not effect your AGI.

Cool. Let's have some Iranian war ships in the Mediterranean for all this while we're at it. Just for good measure, I guess.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Feb 20, 2011 -> 02:11 PM) I asked you to clarify your position, if its not about the money do you agree with the govt stripping away the unions power to collectively bargain? As for the last comment I was drunk and thought that was funny. I actually forgot I posted it. I think if people want to be represented by them, it's their right. For what little it really does them now - and you can say that this is what the union is all about, but do they really give a darn about individuals, or do they care about the money and voting block power?
-
Most (border) states have reciprocal agreements.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Feb 20, 2011 -> 02:16 AM) I apologize. I often give conservatives credit that there are a few of them who actually believe in cutting everything. Then I read a few nonsensical conservative arguments and I realize that I shouldnt give them credit, because they would never give me credit. kap, A lot of people have no jobs and no money. So we can all play the "Some one has it worse then me" game, or we can actually address the point. Do you believe its fair to strip away unions bargaining power? If your answer is yes, that is fine. But its not about money at this point, the unions have given a concession on all monetary issues. They just want the right to bargain collectively. Soxy, Dont give up the good fight. I dont care what people say, this isnt how govt should be run. This is purposefully to piss people off and to make political statements. We fight because there are so many people who only care about themselves, and so few who care about the good of everyone. Its easy to be a Kap, its hard to be a Soxy. Always remember that. Im out. Awwww. How nice. The funny thing is, re: Soxy's point about paying in on benefits, we're actually at the same point - they should have to pay in a little bit, but they shouldn't have to take a base wage cut to do so. Since I get read with the Kap glasses on, I guess it's a villifying position.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Feb 19, 2011 -> 04:00 PM) A 12 hour stomach flu sucks 12 hours? Wah. Try 72. It's way worse.

QUOTE (Soxy @ Feb 19, 2011 -> 04:26 PM) Oh f***ing bite me. If you consider the giant f***ing pay cut many state workers take just for working for the state there is no free. I had a job offer at a private institution for over 10k more than my current job. But I, stupidly, thought it would be a better idea to teach kids that couldn't afford 50k a year in tuition. Like I f***ing said earlier (if you'd read instead of just turned into your typical giant f***ing douchebag) I said I agreed that state workers should pay in. But pay in to the tune of a 14% paycut? f*** off. Jesus f***ing Christ. No wonder I stopped posting here. Well, it it f***ing makes you feel any better, most people are f***ing having to take a f***ing REAL base pay cut ON TOP OF paying 14 to 20% or even MORE rise in benefits, not just a pseudo paycut just to pay in benefits) to even keep their jobs right f***ing now all over the place. It's either that or turn to every one in three people you work with and kiss their ass goodbye while you're having to take their load. Take your pick. Now, with that out of my system, I never, EVER said I have a problem with the workers trying to hold their BASE pay (but that really isn't what this is about). And if you read (oh the irony) what I said in the parenthesis part the part I have a problem with is the benefits and even that is a sliding scale that should be implemented, not just dropped on them).
