What should the max offer be for...
I like the 4 year opt out...some opt out might be a good enticement considering he wants to win, and it's hard to get absolute comfort based on the track record of the 2 Ricks leading the show. 4 years is a reasonable balance of the player not being stuck on a loser (which should be evident or not in 2 years) and club protection (which would like want a longer period)

Mets sign Familia, 3 for $30
He was the 2nd to best hitter on the team - could have played DH. A players they actually developed. And watch his framing numbers skyrocket once he gets away from Cooper and this pitching staff.

Rosenthal: Could Harper be headed to the southside
The Dodgers could easily clear the salary if they wanted to. Just give away 3 still productive players on 1-year contracts (Kemp, Puig and Wood). May have to give a prospect with Kemp - he makes too much. But do they want to? It's not really Friedman's m.o. The Cubs would have a tougher time - they'd have to trade Chatwood and Heyward. Chatwood would require 1 top prospect for someone to eat that nasty salary for 2 years. Heyward is basically paid twice what he should be - $21 million, when he's worthy maybe $8-10 million; and for 5 years. That would require a good player like Happ plus 2 top prospects. That's a high price to pay for Harper. I don't see it happening.

Greinke, Brantley & N. Cruz; why not?
Probably not, but I have no idea how JR does his budgets. We aren't talking purely about money here. Grienke will cost prospects; maybe he shouldn't but he will. Also, it's premature - we don't know what the holes on the team will be. Frankly not one prospect has firmly established himself as a real starter going forward. Yea you can say Moncada and Anderson....but if they don't improve, they are average players. They aren't there yet. I'd also like to see them move Abreu. The Sox have I believe 6 really good OF prospects; I would like to see them trade from that for a pre arb or top prospect. Just a lot of work they can do on this roster. In the meantime, watching Yolmer again doesn't bother me...he probably won't get much better, but he might.

Greinke, Brantley & N. Cruz; why not?
Because those moves would cost resources and the Sox would still be a bad team.

Plan if Sox miss out on Harper/Machado
That won't work if they don't develop a group of 5-10 quality young players And as of now, they aren't close to that.

Plan if Sox miss out on Harper/Machado
I like this, but I doubt the Sox will do it.

Dodgers looking to move Alex Wood and one of their outfielders
How is Wood a salary dump if Nova wasn't? Wood is younger, better and cheaper. A lot of the good teams are trying to get ahead of the game and trade their rentals, just like the rebuilders do. The OF would also likely be a 1 year player. The Sox need to stop giving talent for that stuff.

Update per Heyman: White Sox one of 3 teams meeting Machado
Thanks, yes.

Update per Heyman: White Sox one of 3 teams meeting Machado
Moncada would set the Sox up well. But as per above he doesn't have the star power, Harper has.

White Sox looking at Grandal
They better be sure Collins can't catch. If he can, moving him to 1B devalues him; and trading him now is not exactly trading high.

White Sox looking at Grandal
Why don't the Dodgers want him back?

White Sox sign Ryan Goins
.607 career OPS. What's the point?

Rule-5 Draft thread (Thursday, Dec 13th)
I hope they don't lose anyone, esp. considering the AAAA fodder they protected on the 40. They could pick a reliever, but they have a ton of equivalent guys on the 40. Same with 4th/5th OFs. I doubt they pick anyone.

Dodgers have reached out about Jose Abreu
The Sox should be open and up front with them about their plans while recruiting them. And the plan is that they have about 10 grade A prospects who will be matriculating in the next year or 2, and another 10 grade Bs and with that they will forge a winner hopefully starting in 2020. And if they trade Abreu, they will explain to them why they did it. These guys aren't signing here to win next year. Or put another way, if winning next year is a priority for them, they aren't signing with the White Sox.

Dodgers have reached out about Jose Abreu
I don't see what difference it makes. He's a 1 year player. Trade him if value is offered. Sox are still in that mode, and will be (or should be) for the next year. Sox aren't going to be any good next year, regardless of Harper/Machado.

Your Offseason Plan
This belongs more in the "Creative trades" thread, but I couldn't find it. Anyway, for my money, the 2018 Sox pitcher of the year was Jayce Fry. He's got 4 or 5 pitches. Kd a lot of guys; excellent WHIP. Reminds me a lot of MB - he throws that filthy stuff could be a really good control lefty. I hate trading good pitching. But I'm a sell-high and buy low guy. The Cubs need a lefty reliever...the only one they have is the Chef, Justin Wilson and he's pretty awful. So to that end, Jayce Fry for Ian Happ.

Winter Meetings Predictions
Even if I bought a Yankee stadium excuse (which I don't ) that's still a bad trade. Stephens is one of our better pitching prospects (I know the cw is that this org is replete with pitching, but it isn't). Yolmer is a very viable utility player. Sox are in no position to trade any talent for 1 year players.
