Ventura "absolutely" wants to manage White Sox next season
QUOTE (oldsox @ Sep 9, 2015 -> 10:26 PM) Back in the day, the two best third basemen arguably were Robin and Matt Williams. Now Matt is the worst manager in majors, Robin certainly in lowest quartile. Williams is just getting more media scrutiny. Ventura, Williams, Ausmus...all terrible re strategy. Ventura is making fewer overt flubbs, like bunting right in front of your best hitter, than he used to. Don't kno about the others. All had the same issue - lack of experience.

My/Your Off Season Plan
QUOTE (Lillian @ Sep 10, 2015 -> 09:27 AM) If the front office is not willing to accept that they made a serious mistake in acquiring LaRoche, and recognize his salary as a sunken cost, they can forget about fixing this team, for next season. They are not going to compete with him in the middle of their lineup. That has been apparent since very early in the season, and is now irrefutable. I don't care what they do with him, they have to be willing to move on. Melky is the bigger anchor: lousy defender, hitting poorly, stuck a year beyond Laroche, cost a draft pick.

QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Sep 10, 2015 -> 10:23 AM) They will adjust to Trayce but the real question is will he adjust to them. That AB on Monday in the 9th inning showed me that the kid atleast has a clue. Avi needs some serious f***ing work but I wouldn't necessarily give up on him. They should try him at 3B. Beyond belief. Serious work - compared to whom on this team? He's the team's fourth best hitter (if you include Trayce).

My/Your Off Season Plan
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Sep 9, 2015 -> 10:34 PM) The Sox aren't trading their second best hitter when they're desperate for offense, especially not when he is cost-controlled for multiple years. I agree - they won't. He is the 2nd to best hitter, but he's not that great of a hitter. As for cost controlled - well, you'd get the value of cost-control back in trade. Have to trade something to get something. It would also be a sell=high opportunity, something that the Sox don't do. From what I've seen, if Trayce is part of this team, he should be in CF. Eaton should be in left. I went back and looked at Trayce's highlights over a few days. Swing looks pretty tight to me. Of course all I'm seeing is his hits.

My/Your Off Season Plan
Really the only value that the Sox have to trade is veteran starting pitching. Oh they can shuffle the Danishs and perhaps Micah but leave A ball alone - a lot of talent of which it's still to hard to judge real value. And some want to trade Avi - can't wait to get rid of him. This is his first full ML season and he's doing pretty well. Ridiculous. I listened to a Law chat and someone asked him about Trayce. He says that Trayce is a 70 defensive centerfielder. But he doesn't like the bat at all because the swing is long and somewhat loopy. He hasn't seen Trayce on the Sox, though. So my question, is his swing still long? Or has the pitching coach, perhaps, done something with him. Because if this is sustainable, or partially sustainable, the Sox have another trade chit: Eaton.

9/9 Winston-Salem Playoffs
QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Sep 9, 2015 -> 06:46 PM) Personally, I'd like to see Fulmer spend more time in the minors next year and let Fulmer himself dictate when he's ready. However, who am I to question the Sox and the way they develop pitching? I thought the same thing this year about Rodon but the Sox saw something and he has improved vastly since the start of the season. Fulmer has a rough delivery. Rodon didn't. It looks like they're taking their time trying to smooth it out. Great move. Should be ready for 2017. No need to rush him up, esp. if Hahn is allowed to rebuild this team a bit.

Alexei
QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Sep 9, 2015 -> 05:58 PM) Briefly since I have to get to a radio show (I'm a co-host) Sox have little power, are bad defensively, bad at base running, baseball stupid regarding fundamentals, will not go to a manager who can in essence 'crack the whip' and maybe help players get better. They have black holes at catcher, DH, third base. Will need another starting pitcher with Shark leaving. RF can't seem to stay healthy. Middle infield is still young and learning (assuming Ramirez is gone). The free agent market is poor this off season, if they trade a pitcher they weaken that position (many are advocating they trade Q), will probably have less money to work with since I expect many season ticket holders not to renew. Mark They also have a black hole in LF. Melky had 1 good month, and blight outside of that. Pitching - meaning Quintana or "shudder" Sale, is all they have to trade. Oh sure, Williams could load up the prospects for veterans, but that won't help. By 2017, Fulmer would be ready (and no, they don't need to rush him up next year; he needs his delivery smoothed first) and a couple of others currently in A should be close. Sale/Quintana, Rodon and Fulmer and Johnson would be a really good rotation. A starter is their best, and really only, trade chit. It wouldn't surprise me if they trade Johnson. He doesn't appear to be a Cooper fave, and Cooper rules the roost. As for Alexei and Soto, yea they could re-sign those guys. But Soto hasn't had a particularly good 2nd half. Albers - gotta sign him. These guys are nothing special. At some point you have to let go. Regardless, they should play all the young players the last 3 weeks. Don't understand why they aren't, other than the fact that maybe Don Ventura believe that they're battling for their jobs, and that a few wins will make the difference. I hope the former is true and that the latter is not.

9/9/15- Cleveland @ Sox- 7:10 PM CT
Melky was an awful signing. His career numbers were nothing special anyway and a decline is no surprise. What I don't understand is why Ventura coddles him and DHs Garcia, the younger player who needs the work. Ventura probably thinks Melky is the better player. Shark is a fly ball pitcher. Don't know why the Sox wanted him so much, irrespective of his deterioration.

QUOTE (raBBit @ Sep 9, 2015 -> 03:38 PM) This is correct. KW signed Melky Cabrera on his own. Supposedly Hahn thought they could have gotten similar production for a lesser price. KW wanted to stand pat in the middle of July to hold out for a last run, Hahn wanted to trade Samardzija in early-mid July. KW decided to wait. Hahn was correct on both accounts. This info is actually reassuring and affirms what I though - KW was all over this.

Alexei
Saladino should get at-bats every day. Can't think of a reason not to give them to him. Alexiei will finish with an OPS below .700. The sox know what He can do. He can DH some and sit more. They can pick up the option. While a severe overpay, 9 million is a bargain compared to what they are getting out of Laroche or Melky (whom the Don Ventura refuses to sit). Alexei can also play outfield so that gives him some versatility.
-
9/8/15- Cleveland @ Sox 7:10 PM CT
Saladino doesn't have the bat for third. That's pretty obvious. So they let Olt have a crack at it. Saladino should play short right now, but the Sox insist on playing all veterans. Thompson has been killing the ball. No reason for him to not play every day. We might have a gem.

My/Your Off Season Plan
QUOTE (Knackattack @ Sep 8, 2015 -> 02:22 PM) Trade RF Avi Garcia, 2B Carlos Sanchez, SP Tyler Danish and DH Adam LaRoche for to Padres for Matt Kemp, minor league C Austin Hedges & 6 mil cash considerations each season. I wouldn't trade Avi Garcia straight up for Matt Kemp. Kemp is mediocre these days and getting worse. It's sort of like the CW around here that Melky has done his job, while Avi sucks. The reality is that Avi has hit just as well as Melky, and leads the league in OF assists. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Sep 8, 2015 -> 01:53 PM) Trades: White Sox trade SP Jose Quintana, RF Avail Garcia, 2B Micah Johnson, SP Chris Beck and SP Tyler Danish to the Rockies for 3B Nolan Arenado and C Wilin Rosario White Sox trade RP Zach Putnam to the Marlins for UTIL Derek Dietrich I like the thinking behind the Arenado trade - try to get a young stud in here. I think it's too much and Rosario does nothing for us. What worries me about Arenado is that his OBP is pretty bad...and compared to his SLG, it's really bad. So I wonder if his gaudy numbers are sustainable. Might use Quintana on someone else or to fill 2 holes. People undervalue A Garcia. Don't know why. he's had 1 full season, outplayed Melky, but somehow everyone wants to ship him out.

no slider Chris Sale
A) why isn't he throwing his slider? B) Cooper seems to be a lot better with lefties than righties. Most of the pictures that he's jettisoned have been righties

Mike Olt dfa'd by Cubs, claimed by White Sox
QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Sep 5, 2015 -> 04:37 PM) I think you're missing the point which is that Olt has proven he cannot hit major league pitching. He's had 273 major league at bats. He hasn't proven anything.

Could White Sox trade some pitching to fill other areas in offseason
QUOTE (Knackattack @ Aug 28, 2015 -> 02:59 PM) Cespedes is pretty much the perfect player for the Sox to go after, but he will probably get a 6-7 year deal, same as Heyward, and the last 2 years do you trust a 36/37 year old Cespedes in right field or a 32/33 year old Heyward? Actually, he's the kind of player the Sox should avoid. Low OBP, pain in the ass, 30. 3 teams in a year. Cespedes won't get a 6 or 7 year deal anyway.

Mike Olt dfa'd by Cubs, claimed by White Sox
QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Sep 6, 2015 -> 09:12 PM) I don't know why, but to me, Zobrist screams ".230 hitter" for the Sox. Just the type of thing where a guy has a good track record but struggles here. Same with Harrison- I wouldn't say 2014 was an anomaly for him, but I don't see him ever having a season as good as that one again. I think his 2015 numbers are more indicative of the player he really is. That's because he's 35 and the Sox record with >30 is pretty bad. Neil Walker himself is 30; like to see someone younger. Has bad defensive metrics, FWIW. And he'd be a 1 year rent. Pass. Pirates would never get a mid-rotation starter for him anyway. Not the kind of players I'd trade young pitching for. Prefer to take a different approach than "proven veteran."

QUOTE (Knackattack @ Sep 6, 2015 -> 03:52 PM) I wonder how much we will see Olt this September? Cueto made him look like s*** but against the other guys he got a couple nice line drive singles and made a nice play on D. HOpefully he plays every day. Saladino to short. Alexei to DH

Waiver
QUOTE (LDF @ Sep 6, 2015 -> 03:44 PM) Tor claimed 3b - Matt Dominguez from the waivers. i am wondering if the sox had a chance to claim him or did Tor claimed him before the sox..... does anyone know the order of the waiver list. Sox grabbed the more interesting 3B lottery ticket.

9/5 at KC Royals
Sale, Rodon, Samardzija (if he accepts QO or mid-priced free agent), Johnson, Danks One ace, one potential ace. Q trade should shore up holes. Minor league pitching (which is still in A ball) is protected.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 5, 2015 -> 06:38 PM) If he is in the picture it means he is showing his earlier promise. He has power, somethimg the Sox can use. Chances are. A year from now we will all forget he was ever a White Sox, but it is worth a shot. Agree

Beckham is in the lineup tonight. Just the player the Front Office should be trying to get a good look at.

Mike Olt dfa'd by Cubs, claimed by White Sox
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 5, 2015 -> 02:37 PM) What's Olt's status for next season? Does he have minor league options remaining? Probably not, or he would be in Cubbie AAA - right? I'm glad they're bringing him up - find out what they have. Probably nothing, but the Sox have nothing at 3rd anyway. Meanwhile, would someone kindly tell Don Ventura to sit Alexei for the rest of the season and let Saladino or Sanchez work at short?
