Sox at Guardians 5:40 CST (Gavin Williams in his season debut vs. Fedde)
Well Pedro didn't move Lenyn to the 2 hole (can't move The Pillar down, I guess), but he moved him up to #6. It wasn't that long ago that he was one of our top MI prospects. They finally just put him in the lineup and let him play and it's paying off. I hope Katz and Cannon are watching Fedde pitch to and hit those corners all over the plate. It doesn't fell like it, but Robert's OPS is > .800. This team is a lot worse than the sum of its parts. Maybe selling off the parts will bring back a better team.

Guess Trade Values of Sox Starters
That's the thing. Crochet, Robert and Fedde are the major pieces, and they'll get some rated prospects. But you can also make progress with the 2nd and 3rd tier guys, but it's tough to manage all of that with 3 first-tier guys to trade. The Cardinals last year got Orioles 18 and 20 for a rent of Flaherty and his 1.50+ WHIP. You have to take those trades seriously. Hahn, until 2023, made that mistake multiple times with 2nd/3rd tier players for Rule 5 guys and it got the Sox nowhere.

Guess Trade Values of Sox Starters
It would be nice to see this trade market start to crack and open. Getz has a lot of guys he can move and every one is important; no giveaways or rule 5 guys (the guy we fit Texas was a rule 5 guy but we basically traded nothing for him). Trades on the Sox’ terms. But it’s a lot of work and the more time they allow themselves the better. For as much as the Orioles hug their best prospects, they also gave their #18 and #20 to the Cardinals to rent Flaherty and his 1.55 WHIP. There is value in the second and third tier.

Sox at Guards Jo Noah was right about Cleveland game thread 7/2
Lenyn's OPS is above .600. Time for him to switch spots with Benintendi and his .537 OPS in the lineup. Let's see how Lenyn does with better pitches out of the 2 hole. And keep Robert leading off.

2025 Old Sock Drawer
As did Reynaldo. Well maybe not shredded, but he walked a bunch.

Good more insightful question would’ve been to ask why he pinch hit for Korey Lee. Of course he would probably just start waxing poetic about Maldonado again.

Pedro is just literally stupid.

2024 - MLB Draft Thread
I just realized that Jac can throw 100. I had figured he was just a run-of-the-mill college reliever. They've got to draft this guy.

Tim Anderson DFA'd by Marlins
He also made a horrendous error last Sunday, which led to two runs and put the Phillies back in the game.

I love his swing. Smooth.

Guess Trade Values of Sox Starters
They all had ace stuff, and they pitched like it for various amounts of time. Hahn turned Hector Santiago into 2 of those guys (plus a 3rd) in the 2 best trades he ever made (and he didn't make many good trades). I'd like to see Getz make some normal baseball trades (i.e. neither buying nor selling) and turn someone like Cannon into the next Eaton.

How hard does Smith throw- is he a 95+ guy? I generally disfavor pitchers in the first round, but maybe that's where the value lies in this weird/weak draft.

Guess Trade Values of Sox Starters
Well, a system needs probably 12 good starting prospects to be confident that they can fill out the rotation when they hit the majors. I just read a tweet that the White Sox have more OPS 100+ hitters in the lineup (100 ABs minimum) than the Yankees. Obviously, the Yankees have 2 of the top 4 hitters in baseball as well. But if you look around at these rosters of the various 2nd tier contenders, most of them have at least 1/2 a lineup below .700 OPS. Now they each have a couple of great hitters. Things change and this year may be an anomaly on that sort of thing, but if Robert comes back to form and hits like a beast, how far away are they? Maybe a couple of great hitters, a few average players, and some defense and a competent manager. Which I guess is a long way.

Guess Trade Values of Sox Starters
Perhaps so; I certainly hope so. But shouldn't we expect about the same for Crochet? Both are ace level; Cease had a down 2023 versus concerns about Crochet's innings and injury history. Now Crochet's peak is higher than Cease's so that might mean a bit higher return for Crochet; July v. offseason might help, too. But it's in the ballpark; would we be happy with that?

Guess Trade Values of Sox Starters
Has anything changed such that teams will trade away their best prospects or even their 3rd best? We heard all about all of the great offers for Cease, but in the end we got one player in the back half of the top 100. There are some FOs that have done it in the recent past, but one of those is San Diego and they didn’t. Seattle and Philly are others, but they don’t need pitching. Baltimore and Milwaukee certainly need a starter, but they didn’t get where they are by trading away good prospects. And then there is the timing. If they want to trade him, they should be purely focused on that. But they seem to be prioritizing the All-Star game, which really means they won’t trade him until after that: and then Pedro yaps about limiting workload and they throw him 7 yesterday. All kind of a mess.

Soroka pitched well today and has been pitching well recently.

Story on Sox trade possibilities...
I keep going back and forth in my mind as to whether we should trade Crochet and Robert. I guess when the Sox play reasonably well, I want to keep them. And when we get blown out, I want to trade them. Accordingly, I'm leaning toward keeping them, with the understanding that we'll probably have to trade them next year at this time. I'm not convinced that their value will be depreciated much, if at all, given Crochet's innings limitations (perceived or real) this year and Robert's injuries and the possible Pedro effect on wanting to get rid of Robert (Pedro needs a pristine clubhouse with lots of Nicky Lopez'). What are the chances of the Sox finding another hitter like Robert in a dispersal trade? Brebbia is pitching himself into the July trade conversation. Pretty good numbers.

Half season evaluations - Bummer trade
What is a "barrel?" A nouveau word for "homer?" Anyway, it's the same thing out of Bummer this year as in the past: Low homer totals, High Whip (1.60 this year), high ERA, but low FIP. So i guess the idea is that he keeps getting unlucky that so many of the balls hit against him are dropping in for hits. It goes back to those theories that the only true measurables are Ks and homers. But at some point, when "bad luck" keeps happening year after year, you have to question the validity of the statistic. Sox did fine on this trade.

I like both of them, too. I think Cleveland takes Wetherholt. And stop giving away picks. Nuance the draft, like the Guardians.

Crochet DeJong Fedde Vaughn Pillar listed among Top 13 trade candidates at MLB.com
Well, that looks like a fair deal on paper. But I am in the minority and am leery of these Oriole prospects. I think that they have hugged them so hard and for so long has inflated their reputation. But that’s about as good an offer as we’ll get.

Lopez was a Free Agent. Kudos to the Braves for starting him. They also made a nifty trade for Sale: Vaughn Grissom has a Lopez-level OPS this season. The team that gets Kopech will start him next season. T

Half season evaluations - Bummer trade
Isn't that what we basically got in Givens? I realize that Bummer's FIP was a run < than his ERA, but he was also walking 5+/9. I find it hard to believe that teams were ponying up much for 5+ walks in a pennant race. I get offseason, where you have an entire Spring to work with him. In the end, we got several players who had a chance to be decent plus a prospect. The prospect appears to be decent, while the players not so much. Soroka might even be figuring it out (4 decent outings in a row) although he still has a lot to prove. I'd either let him start a couple of games, or use him in more pressure situations. He does the Sox no good if they can't move him. All in all, I can't complain about the Bummer trade.

6/26/2024 - Chicago “Cubs” vs. Los Angeles “Angels” - Fedde vs. Stone - 7:10 pm
Let’s see him do that in high leverage situations. Or put him back in the rotation and let him pitch six good ones a few times before July 31. time is running short on some of these guys whose only value is to be peddled next month.

How about taking a page from the Dodgers playbook and batting Robert at leadoff. Give the team's best hitter the most at bats. Can't hurt.
