  1. QUOTE(the southside tiger @ Aug 30, 2005 -> 11:25 PM) This is sad. Jon Garland has great stuff. He could be a great pitcher. But he is a coward, and until he grows a pair, hes not gonna amount to anything. He will be a decent pitcher who dominates crap teams and gets shaken up by the big boys and as a result he'll have a few good seasons mixed in with several bad ones. A real waste of potential in my book. We get the point.
  2. QUOTE(SnB @ Aug 30, 2005 -> 10:56 PM) i've been watchign the game on and off due to homework, but blum's first error wasn't exactly an error was it? To me, that looked like a slow roller that he would have had major trouble getting him out in the first place. Rod Barajas was running.
  3. QUOTE(Rex Hudler @ Aug 30, 2005 -> 09:53 PM) FWIW the Barons have already clinched a playoff berth. Right now all they are playing for are playoff home games. If Jacksonville wins both halves they would get games 1,2, 4 and 5 at home during the playoffs. If Birmingham wins the 2nd half, it will be split 2 home, three away. Jacksonville... the Dodgers' affiliate, correct? If so, any comments on any of the following (not sure which level these guys are at, but I'm sure they're in the organization) -- LaRoche, Guzman, or Billinglsy?
  4. At least we're playing for one run in the first two innings...
  5. QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Aug 30, 2005 -> 09:35 PM) FWIW BMac hasn't pitched for 6 days...not good... Heh, almost as bad as the Sox pitching Diaz on ten days rest against Baltimore in the rain and expecting a good start...
  6. QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 30, 2005 -> 01:49 PM) Gload's injury this season cost him his ability to play the outfield...which wasn't much of an ability to begin with. In the minds of our mgmt., back-up first baseman was not a very critical position. Thus, that's the reason he hasn't been up. Also, it's not like he was tearing the cover off the ball when he was with the Sox THIS season. One of the biggest mistakes someone can make is putting too much stock in minor league numbers. Or, worse yet, putting any stock whatsoever into 23 ABs... :rolly
  7. QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 30, 2005 -> 04:54 AM) You called me ignorant. You said you weren't surprised considering the source. In my book, that's a personal attack. I'm sure you won't get in trouble, so I'll just drop it. And since when do I have to form my opinion because of what some "fan scouting report" says? It sure sounds like a scientific judgment of a player's attributes. Thankfully, Bellhorn is going to sign with the Yankees tomorrow, so this lovefest for a well below average player will end. I called you're statement ignorant. You got proved wrong about Bellhorn defensively, and then shot the ignorant comment of "I could care less what this 'poll' says", because only your eyes tell you that he's bad defensively, when everything else says he's about average. Whatever, I'm done.
  8. QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 30, 2005 -> 12:03 AM) Wow, nice personal attack there. Classy! I'm just going to refrain from coming back with a comment about you. Personal attack? I said that's ignorant, to say "I could care less what this 'poll' says", which it is. If you take it as a personal attack, then that's your problem.
  9. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Aug 30, 2005 -> 04:38 AM) Player A: .360 Player B: .474 BUt they aren't built the same, and SLG% tends to favor the guy who doesn't walk. A single counts towards slugging whereas a walk doesn't. Based on OPS, player B is a no-brainer. Well, yeah. That's a pretty easy choice... BTW -- I hope my Mark Bellhorn defending didn't account to me rather having Bellhorn then Walker. I'd take Mark Bellhorn version 2004, but I don't think he'll ever do that well again, so I'll take Walker.
  10. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Aug 30, 2005 -> 02:09 AM) So, this Chris Young is pretty good, eh? Bad day for Chris -- no x-tra base hits, and no walks... :headshake
  11. QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 29, 2005 -> 11:52 PM) Drop it. I could care less what this "poll" says. I don't get where you ever thought I said Walker was better defensively than Bellhorn. We need HITTING, and Walker is better than that. It sure sounded like that when you said 'Todd Walker is underrated defensively', and in the Bellhorn thread, that 'Mark Bellhorn is bad defensively'. Well, that's pretty ignorant. Then again, I guess I should've considered the source.
  12. QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 29, 2005 -> 11:46 PM) And like I said, it's all based on reputation, in my opinion. I've never heard of this "fan scouting report" before. Walker had a terrible reputation for his defense in Boston. ??? Ok. I'll still trust 80 pairs of eyes than one pair... Who cares if you've never heard of it?
  13. 5-5 on two errors. //Done giving updates.
  14. Well, Bonderman isn't doing a very good job, either... It's now 5-3.
  15. QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 29, 2005 -> 11:21 PM) Well, what makes "the people's" view any different than mine. I would say that has more to do with Walker's poor reputation more than anything else. As a matter of fact, Walker was much, much better defensively than Hairston was this season at 2nd base for the Cubs. I guarantee you that Hairston has a better reputation on the fan's scouting report, and thus has better rankings. What makes the fans scouting report different than your opinion? Uh, 'cause there's about 80 of them who said that Bellhorn is average defensively at second, and about 15 who said that Walker is awful on defense. And then there's you and your opinion.
  16. Indians down 4-0 in the first! Dmitri Young granny! EDIT: 5-0!
  17. QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 29, 2005 -> 11:01 PM) Give it a break. I never said he was a good defender, but he's not nearly as bad as his reputation would lead you to believe. I watch enough baseball to know which fielders are good and which ones are bad. Walker is very comparable to Iguchi in my book, with Iguchi being better turning the double play. Both guys are poor going up the middle, and have very little range on pop ups. I do love when people attack certain posters though out of habit, instead of actually trying to grasp their view point. Grasp your viewpoint? Stats say Walker is a bad defender. The people who see Walker play more than you do say he's a bad defender. Stats say Mark Bellhorn is not much worse -- if at all -- than Walker defensively. The people who see Mark Bellhorn play on a regular basis say that he's average defensively, which is a better grade than Walker got. Attacking a poster? I'm attacking your flawed argument, which is coming from the base of -- "I know which players are good defenders, I can see that with my eyes". I'm using defensive stats, and the opinions of several others who say you're wrong.
  18. QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 29, 2005 -> 10:24 PM) People talk about Todd Walker like he's the worst infielder ever. I was simply saying that he wasn't that bad, and you can have him in the field and not get worried about every ball hit at him. It's not like he's the 2nd base version of Ozuna at 3rd base. Sometimes, you have to step back from the statistics and just judge guys with your own eyes. I bet you could find some statistics that say Pods is a good outfielder...when he's not. This team doesn't need a good defensive infielder....we need hitting, especially from the left side. I know this....I'd much rather have the Sox pitching face Jeff Liefer off the bench instead of Todd Walker. Ok -- so, the fans scouting report ALSO said he was a bad defender. But no -- fathom's eyes says he's underrated, so that must be true. :banghead :rolly
  19. QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 29, 2005 -> 09:46 PM) Walker gives you someone off the bench who you can depend on for making contact in a big spot. Bellhorn is about the exact opposite. Also, Walker's defense is not that bad. I watch nearly every Cubs game (rooting against them), and his defense is vastly underrated. His defense is about average, but compared to how much he gets trashed for it, I just don't see the reason why he is. Not a single GM in baseball would rather have Bellhorn than Walker. Last year, Bellhorn (in 124 games at 2B) had a ZR of .843. This year, in 82 games as a 2B, he's had a ZR of .817. In 2003, playing 139 games for Boston, Walker had a .788 ZR. In 89 games at 2B in 2004, he had an .824 ZR. In 2005, in 72 games, he's had a ZR of .830. For some reason, I can only access Mark Bellhorn's PECOTA page on Baseball Prospectus, but last year, they have Bellhorn as five runs worse than the average 2B-man. Tango Tiger's Scouting Report: By The Fans, For the Fans has Walker below average in each of the seven categories. Meanwhile, it has Bellhorn as just about average in each of the seven categories. I'm not going to act like I know he's better -- because I don't. But, I find it absolutely histerical that you KNOW that Walker is underrated defensively, and that you KNOW that Bellhorn is below average defensively. It's a joke, really... Difference being, in a couple of days, Bellhorn will come free. Walker will cost a pretty good prospect, IMO.
  20. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Aug 29, 2005 -> 09:52 PM) Complete bulls*** here, why don't you look your s*** up before you post, unreal. Garland, el duque, and Politte also have better obp's. Rowand, my heart skipped a beat. I got scared that I got on your bad side... I'm dead serious...
  21. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Aug 29, 2005 -> 09:42 PM) the team needs hitting, Bellhorn hits about as well as my girlfriend. Walker's offense is far superior to Bellhorns. I understnad your RSN lovefest with Bellhorn, but come on now. I believe Mark Bellhorn's .328 OBP would rank higher than everyone else on the team besides Podsednik, Iguchi, and Konerko.
  22. ^^^ I agree. It just doesn't look right from the outside. I don't know, I don't like the tanish color of the old stadium below with the metallic look of the new part. From the inside, however, it's absolutely beautiful. The seats look great, and if you were to look at a picture of the outside, then the inside, you'd probably think they were two different places.
  23. Everyone is so quick to ride Thomas out of town, but where's he going to go? You can, right off the bat, eliminate all NL teams -- Thomas is a DH for whatever is left of his career. Then, there's at least five AL teams that will have absolutely no interest in him -- Tampa Bay and Kansas City jump out to me off the top of my head. That leaves about ten teams, including the Sox, that might be interested in him. Personally, I think Thomas will be back on an incentive laden contract.
  24. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Aug 29, 2005 -> 04:33 AM) Yes. What's the problem with that? Worry about the games we have in front of us, not the potential ones a month away. What good is Brian Anderson in the playoffs anyways? Personally, I'd be more comfortable with a better RH bat off the bench. Of course, I'd also like to have Ross Gload make the playoff roster, too, but unfortunately that probably isn't happening either...
  25. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Aug 29, 2005 -> 04:08 AM) The funny thing is the Nats just had their GM hold a close door meeting and he ripped the team on how they couldnt hit and all. Our pitching has been stellar, because their numbers are better than ours. they have scored more runs by about 28 more runs than we have. How our pitching is valued. If it wasnt for our stellar pitching, what a disaster this could be. LOL! Maybe Bowden should start blaming himself for the worst signing in the offseason (Guzman), and one of the worst (Castilla). What a great quote...
